JR East Launches New Payment Service ‘teppay’ — 5ch: ‘That Name Is Lame’

From our other sites

The story

On October 20, JR East announced it had added a new code-payment feature called “teppay” to Mobile Suica. It’s built directly into the existing Mobile Suica app, so no new app install is required. On the 5ch Business News+ thread about it, reactions focused less on the service itself and more on the name “Teppei,” with a string of posts citing anime characters who share the name. Plenty of commenters also questioned the slow launch time of the Mobile Suica app and how this really differs from existing code-payment services like PayPay.

Make it a separate app and get the launch time down to 3 seconds.
3AnonymousOct 21, 2026 06:09
Who the hell came up with the lame name "Teppei"?
Own up to it!

Mobile Suica was fine back in the flip-phone days, but the app now is sluggish to open, and those unread-notification pop-ups are annoying.
5AnonymousOct 21, 2026 06:15
Feels too much like "toritetsu" (obsessive train-photographer) territory for my taste.
6AnonymousOct 21, 2026 06:27
Looking at current market share, the top 4 players — led by PayPay — are all affiliated with mobile carriers. Everyone's got a phone, after all.

In that sense, since this is based on Suica, something "everyone already has," it might actually stand a chance.

Re: #6
Linking it to phone bill payments means even kids can use it easily.
8AnonymousOct 21, 2026 06:35
Used Suica for the first time two weeks ago, and it's pretty handy. But you can't delete your usage history, huh.
9AnonymousOct 21, 2026 06:36
Without something like a 20%-off fare campaign, getting this to catch on is gonna be tough.
10AnonymousOct 21, 2026 06:38
This is gonna churn out a ton of idiots who stop dead at the ticket gate fumbling with their phones.

"Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" (a riff on the anime title "When They Cry")

Anyway, the app's launch time is still slow as ever.
That's gonna be a real source of stress at the checkout line.
Rival code-payment services work nationwide, but this one's basically just for JR East commuters within its service area — that's a big handicap.
15AnonymousOct 21, 2026 07:01
It'd be great if this were more convenient than Pitapa's no-prepayment, pay-later system, but honestly, now that tap payments on credit cards have become so widespread,
I don't think there's much room to differentiate beyond reward points.

Re: #15
A lot of places still don't support credit card tap payments, so iD is still my go-to.
There aren't many situations in Japan where numberless cards actually get to shine.
16AnonymousOct 21, 2026 07:04
Feel bad for any guy whose real name is actually Teppei.
17AnonymousOct 21, 2026 07:09
I'm from the countryside, so I've never used Suica even once.
18AnonymousOct 21, 2026 07:21
Even with more options popping up, I'm not gonna switch from what I'm used to unless there's a seriously compelling reason.
19AnonymousOct 21, 2026 07:22
JR East can't turn this around until they fix the app's launch time.
JRE POINT failed for the same reason.
They just don't get it at all.

Re: #19
The login timeout is way too short, too.
20AnonymousOct 21, 2026 07:23
Honestly, Suica itself is kind of a "Galapagos" technology (isolated from global standards).

Re: #20
Is that really something to bring up in this thread, lol

"I'm Teppei, yeah!"~ ♪

What anime was that even from? I only remember the theme song, no clue what the show was about.

Re: #21
It's from an anime called "Ore wa Teppei" ("I Am Teppei", written with different kanji — 鉄兵 instead of 鉄平).
22AnonymousOct 21, 2026 07:36
I'd rather use something that doesn't seem likely to leak my data.

Re: #23
Yeah, the title says it all.
"Frog, frog, pee on the frog's head—
and if that doesn't work, BOOM, dynamite!"
Something like that, I think — I'll look it up later.
25AnonymousOct 21, 2026 07:50
Way too late to the game.
Seriously, how many laps behind are you?
PayPay's already won this race.
Or there's always "Mikitani Pay" (a jab at Rakuten's CEO Mikitani).
29AnonymousOct 21, 2026 08:01
Conpay
Ippay
31AnonymousOct 21, 2026 08:02
Would "Tetsudo Pay" (Railway Pay) not have worked as the name?
34AnonymousOct 21, 2026 08:21
Rather than something tied to your smartphone,
a prepaid Suica card keeps your liability to a minimum if security ever gets breached.

This is just dumb.
35AnonymousOct 21, 2026 08:41
This'll probably leak data too, but it's gotta be better than that infamous "leak-everything Pay" (a dig at the 7pay breach scandal).
36AnonymousOct 21, 2026 08:42
Is this really something a company that controls critical infrastructure should be doing?
37AnonymousOct 21, 2026 09:01
Can't even use it on the train.
PayPay's fine for me.
38AnonymousOct 21, 2026 09:06
So you'd carry it separately from Suica?
Couldn't they have just made it so you could do barcode payments with the same Suica app and balance?
39AnonymousOct 21, 2026 09:28
Suica itself takes forever to load.
40AnonymousOct 21, 2026 09:34
My phone's already laggy, so I'd rather not add more apps if I can help it.

Background and Key Points

teppay is a new code-payment feature added onto the existing “Mobile Suica” app, operating as a separate service from Suica’s tap payment. In Japan’s domestic code-payment market, carrier-affiliated services led by PayPay dominate the rankings, and the thread did include comments noting the advantage of being tied to a mobile carrier. At the same time, the original article doesn’t mention that Suica’s FeliCa standard is technically distinct from QR code payments and is a format rarely used outside Japan. It’s also easy to overlook that teppay is expected to be usable mainly within the JR East service area for now, unlike nationwide services such as PayPay. The thread’s reaction centered far more on the name “Teppei” than on any real evaluation of the service’s functionality, leaving discussion of its practicality fairly limited.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Business News+) thread “‘Wouldn’t this other Pay be fine?’ — JR East launches new code-payment service ‘teppay,’ a service that goes beyond Suica’s ¥20,000 cap.”
