The story

During the broadcast of Nippon TV’s “News to” on the 15th, brain scientist Nobuko Nakano sparked controversy by using the phrase “sexual entertainment” while discussing how politicians build their personal networks. On the 19th, Nakano apologized on her Instagram, saying her words had been “taken in a way different from what I intended,” and explained that she had meant to point out “the structural problem of female politicians finding it hard to attend nighttime gatherings.” The incident is also remembered for MC announcer Chiaki Kuroki immediately pushing back on air with, “I don’t think that’s the case.” On 5ch, many posters questioned the form of her apology, saying it reads as pinning the blame on listeners’ interpretation rather than owning her words, while some showed understanding for the underlying point she was trying to make.

She didn't just ignore it and actually apologized, so isn't that fine?
50AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:36
Re: #5
It's the fault of whoever misunderstood it weirdly!
That's not what you'd call a real apology.
6AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:15
Yomiuri TV's MC, announcer Chiaki Kuroki, calmly shot back on the spot: "I don't think that's the case."

Chiaki's a pro.
7AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:17
You guys misunderstood again?
Pathetic!
9AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:18
So she's saying it's a problem with how listeners took it — there's zero apology for the actual content of what she said, which means this isn't an apology at all.
13AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:20
Is she basically saying "you people really are a handful"?
16AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:20
"Different from my intent"?
Don't you mean that's exactly what you wanted to say?
17AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:21
She's saying the same thing politicians always say —
"the other side just misunderstood on their own," lol
19AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:21
"It's the fault of the dumb people who misunderstood on their own — I'm not the one at fault."

Yep, that's about the size of it.
20AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:22
Basically she wanted to imply, in a roundabout way, that women use themselves as a "weapon" to land work —
and that got flatly shot down on air.
23AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:23
Re: #20
Are you dumb?
The point is that politicians trade information at these "sexual entertainment" gatherings, so female politicians have a harder time getting access to it.
22AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:23
Maybe it's from all her years hosting "Soko Made Itte Iinkai," but her ability to react instantly to a risky comment is next-level.
She's a host you can rely on in live TV.
25AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:24
Come on, that's literally the expression she used — obviously ("JK" = net slang for "use some common sense").
27AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:26
What she's saying isn't actually wrong, though.
28AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:26
Where in her corrected statement does the phrase "sexual entertainment" even show up?
Would it be in there if she'd just phrased it more politely?
29AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:27
It reads like "I didn't do anything wrong, but I'll apologize anyway."
31AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:27
Isn't it precisely because she's a woman that she'd be the one able to provide this "sexual entertainment," not be shut out of it?
32AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:28
Re: #1
The announcer's follow-up — or more like interruption — did land at a kind of odd moment, though…
33AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:29
She used a word so specific there's no way to misread it, and now it's this.
People think that once someone's been "cleared" as fair game, you can say anything to them.
34AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:29
If you're going to make excuses, at least bring one that actually holds up.
36AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:31
Watching Showa-retro exploration videos on YouTube is way more fun than watching the "Peace-kun" mascot from Omiya Park, honestly.
39AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:32
Why does her Wikipedia "related topics" section list Soka Gakkai (a major Japanese religious and political organization)?
41AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:32
Women just can't use that platform.

The bell rings, the bell rings
Waving goodbye, you say farewell
On the last train with its red lamp
(quoting lyrics from an old enka ballad)
43AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:33
Feels like she just wanted to say "sexual entertainment" for the shock value.
Dinners, drinking parties, hostess bars — politicians can't even go to that kind of open venue in the first place.
44AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:33
This is the same person who said she found it questionable when news exists purely to satisfy people's rubbernecking — and got flamed with "then don't go on tabloid shows yourself" —
and now, lol, she's on a brand-new tabloid show.
45AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:35
Re: #1
And there it is, there it is —
"an expression that invited misunderstanding"

Nah, nobody misunderstood anything.
46AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:35
Re: #40
Either her vocabulary's thin or she's just bad at explaining things. The smarter someone actually is, the better they should be at making themselves understood in plain language.
Like the hosts on "Children's Phone Consultation Room" — they're great at explaining things, lol (a long-running Japanese radio show where experts answer kids' questions simply).
62AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:40
Re: #46
That phone consultation show is pre-recorded, so it's edited.
89AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:57
You say it because you actually believe it — it just slips out.
Even my amateur "brain science" gets it right once in a while, right?

Re: #89
The guy who got seriously chewed out by the former president of Microsoft Japan was also a "brain scientist," wasn't he.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The “I used an expression that invited misunderstanding” style of apology is a phrase politicians and celebrities reach for again and again, and it tends to locate the problem not in what was actually said but in how listeners interpreted it — exactly the pattern that draws backlash on forums like this, with posters saying she’s “blaming the audience.” Nakano’s actual point appears to have been a structural one: female politicians, who have a harder time attending nighttime gatherings and sexual-entertainment-type settings, end up at a disadvantage when it comes to trading information. But the term “sexual entertainment” itself carried such a strong punch that the word took on a life of its own before her explanation could catch up. The fact that the MC shot the remark down instantly, live on air, is also being read as a sign the show’s staff sensed the risk in real time. Beyond the rights and wrongs of the remark itself, the thread also spun off into discussion of Nakano’s past media appearances.
