The story
A thread on 5ch’s console-gaming board (the “Geha” board) argued that “Genshin Impact is fun, so drop your Nintendo-style games and switch over” — and the replies split sharply between agreement and pushback. The discussion spread into technical debates over Genshin’s storytelling and character polygon counts, as well as the current state of the PlayStation Store charts, where Chinese-made free-to-play titles dominate the top sales rankings.
What people said
There's no 'good or bad' for a game whose story is only around for a limited time, lol.
It's funny how anyone who hasn't been following it since day one is just a newbie who only knows the story in disconnected fragments.
It's a story-driven game, so a clip alone won't make it make sense — that's just not gonna work.

They already announced Mugendai's shutdown date, so recommending NTE is off the table now too, lol
Classic case of Nintendo-fanboy inferiority complex.
So you call it a 'kiddie game' and figured I'd fall for that special-needs-level logic, huh?
Guess Japanese is just too hard for them.
That's the tricky part about Japanese —
with kanji, katakana, hiragana, and the Roman alphabet all mixed together,
you can write without spacing words apart, which backfires sometimes.
Unless you clearly write it as 'いい加減に中華ゲー〜' ("Seriously, Chinese games…"),
it can end up reading as one single garbled word.
What I don't get is this mindset of 'they probably secretly want to play it but are stubbornly holding back.' If someone won't play a game they could just play on their phone, the only explanation is 'they're not interested' — there's nothing more to it.
Hope Nishi-kun gives you that approval one day.
Monster Hunter Rise's characters run 20,000-30,000 polygons, so quality-wise Genshin could run just fine on Switch — assuming you actually had proper optimization behind it, of course.
It's an open world that's already implemented 7 nations with over 100 playable characters, so it'd blow way past Switch specs, easily.
They're up there on PC too, but PC has plenty of its own mainstream free titles.
I figured the Epic Games Store — aka 'Tencent's Shop,' given Tencent's stake in it — would be Chinese-game territory too, so I checked,
but Fortnite and Rocket League are sitting at the very top, so it's less of a total Chinese sweep than expected.
Move on to NTE and Wuthering Waves already.
Those are both total trash games though.
The story especially is a lost cause.
That store runs discounts, so PC users spend their money there.
It's not just cheap — there are also quite a few Chinese games there that aren't even on Steam.
Though honestly Fortnite is so dominant it's basically 'Fortnite and everything else' at this point.
Are they losing their audience and struggling financially or something?
are there just a ton of clueless spenders out there, or does the ranking itself not actually mean much?
Both, honestly.
Even a game like Pragmata managed to hold a top spot.
You think kids are actually the ones playing it?
It's nothing but creepy, smirking ("nichaa" — internet slang for a creepy grin) middle-aged men.
Genshin's main player base is people in their 20s and 30s.
LMAO, and you call it a kiddie game!
Meanwhile it's the 40- and 50-somethings playing Nintendo games.
Wait, don't tell me you actually still think of yourself as a kid in your 20s or 30s…?
Free-to-play? Gacha? Nintendo doesn't recognize that garbage as gaming, idiot.
You mean Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket?
Guess it's finally starting to get abandoned by Chinese gamers too.
Pokémon Pocket doesn't even have gacha mechanics, though…
Same old wordplay, right on schedule.
Background and Key Points
Genshin Impact is HoYoverse’s free-to-play, gacha-monetized open-world RPG, released globally in 2020 on PS4/PS5, PC, mobile, and later PS5, but never on Switch — the game’s scale (the thread cites seven in-game “nations” and over 100 playable characters) is generally judged too demanding for Nintendo’s underpowered hardware without heavy compromise. The “Geha” board is 5ch’s hardware/console board, long known for anti-Nintendo sentiment, and “Nishi-kun” is board slang mocking Nintendo loyalists (from “任天堂,” Nintendo’s Japanese name). That framing explains why a thread urging Switch players to defect reads as trolling as much as genuine advocacy.
The disagreement wasn’t really “Nintendo vs. China” — most posters accepted Chinese-made games are now unavoidable on PlayStation’s charts. The real split was over Genshin specifically: whether it’s still worth recommending at all versus newer HoYoverse-adjacent titles, whether a short clip can convey what makes a heavily narrative, years-deep gacha game appealing to newcomers, and whether Genshin’s assets (20,000–40,000 polygons per character, per one poster) could realistically be ported to Switch even with optimization.
What outside readers will likely misread is the PlayStation Store chart claim. Free-to-play, gacha-funded titles topping PSN’s rankings reflects download counts, not necessarily revenue or sustained engagement — a distinction posters themselves raised (#71, #73) but never resolved. Similarly, the “kiddie game” jab backfires once you note the thread’s own claim that Genshin’s core audience skews 20s-30s while Nintendo’s skews toward players in their 40s and 50s — the opposite of what the age-based insult assumes.
