Giants Open Climax Series Under Acting Manager Hashigami, Eyeing First Title in 14 Years — 5ch: “Yoshinobu Would Work, But He and Hara Don’t Get Along”

From our other sites

The story

On the 10th, the Yomiuri Giants entered the Climax Series under acting manager Hideki Hashigami, aiming for their first Japan Series title in 14 years against DeNA and Hanshin. On 5ch’s live-discussion threads, alongside same-day updates like Atsuhiro Inoue and Iori Yamazaki’s tune-up outings, opinions flew over Hashigami’s in-game decisions and his impending departure at season’s end. The conversation then shifted to the next manager, with posters suggesting that if Yoshinobu Takahashi took over, Hashigami or Hiroyuki Ibata could stay on as bench coach — though some doubted that would happen with chairman Tatsunori Hara in the picture. The second half of the thread turned nostalgic, debating the popularity and reputation of Giants alumnus Tatsuro Hirooka during his playing days.

Wonder if Hideki Hashigami will stick around as the new manager's right-hand man

Re: #12
If it's Yoshinobu, sure, that could work — but no chance with Hara, since they don't get along
13AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:01
The actual coaching and lineup decisions were left to the coaches anyway, so the ones who should really get cut are what's-his-name, Sugiuchi, Wheeler, and Sun-chan
14AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:05
Hashigami was basically just doing Abe's mop-up duty (a baseball term for garbage-time relief work, used here figuratively), so of course he's stepping down
16AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:17
Whoever takes the job, there's gonna be friction — the only way to smooth things over seems to be bringing back 'Unagi' ('Eel,' apparently a nickname) as manager with Hashigami staying on as bench coach
22AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:24
Re: #16
Why didn't that combination work out before, I wonder…
18AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:19
Thanks to Abe, it's become crystal clear that Hashigami is irresponsible, sly, and can't handle data at all.
Having a guy like that as the team's strategic advisor was itself part of why the team was weak.
Forget being manager — he's not needed on this team at all.
19AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:19
If it's Yoshinobu, the bench coach would be Hashigami or Ibata
As long as it doesn't turn into 'Karubi' (a mocking nickname, apparently), either one's fine lol

I've got a ticket, but knowing we're gonna lose makes it feel like such a hassle to go watch the "karakuri" (meaning unclear here, possibly local slang)
Might just change plans and head to a WINS betting shop instead

Re: #17
With Yoshinobu, he'd probably just quietly keep taking notes and get along fine
26AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:26
Hirooka's thing is just him not liking Nomura — don't drag that into the manager debate
27AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:29
I've never actually seen Hirooka or Mori wearing a Giants uniform, so I just can't picture them as Giants alumni at all…
28AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:30
Maybe the old master is deliberately saying 'outsiders are unacceptable,' expecting the club to push back the louder he complains — deep down he might actually be fine with outsiders
29AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:31
I guess it's mainly because we've only ever seen him in other teams' uniforms…
30AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:31
Apparently Hirooka in our team's uniform back in his playing days looked incredibly cool

If times had been different, the old master might've been as popular as 'Saka-Owa' (a fan nickname pairing star players, including Hayato Sakamoto) — or even more so
52AnonymousOct 10, 2026 10:12
Re: #38
There's a world of difference between Sakamoto, whose hitting kept improving year after year, and Hirooka, who just played defense
41AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:56
No way you fire a manager who finished 2nd in his very first year, lol

Hashigami: "Right?"
42AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:58
Hirooka could only hit in his first year! After that his batting just kept getting worse, lol
His defense was sharp, sure, but just rigid and boring!
He got blown out of the water in popularity by the flashy, showmanship-filled Yoshio Yoshida
The All-Star fan vote always went to Yoshida!
That's what my late grandpa (a Giants fan) always used to say
53AnonymousOct 10, 2026 10:36
He's overrated thanks to riding on the coattails of the 'Oh-Kaneda-Hirooka' trio (a nickname grouping him with Giants legends Sadaharu Oh and Masaichi Kaneda)
talking about Hirooka in his playing days
61AnonymousOct 10, 2026 11:37
Whatever happened to all that talk about wanting to "fulfill his promise to Mr. Giants" (nickname for Giants legend Shigeo Nagashima)?
76AnonymousOct 10, 2026 11:46
Re: #61
He should've done it before Mr. Giants passed away in the first place
Now that he's gone, there's no need to bother with it anymore

That was about becoming WBC manager, wasn't it

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Climax Series (CS) is a format in which the 2nd- and 3rd-place finishers from Japan’s Central and Pacific Leagues face off first, with the winner then taking on the pennant-winning club for the Japan Series title. The thread’s starting premise is that the Giants’ Shinnosuke Abe era is ending after this season, leaving coach Hideki Hashigami to run the team as acting manager through the Climax Series. With 14 years having passed since the team’s last Japan Series title, one point of discussion was the choice of next manager — an especially sensitive matter at the Giants, where it tends to hinge on alumni networks — which brought up both hopes for Yoshinobu Takahashi and concerns about his relationship with chairman Tatsunori Hara. On Tatsuro Hirooka, posters weighed his reputation as a brilliant defender against the harsher view that “he could only hit in his first year,” with some also comparing his popularity to that of his contemporary, Hanshin’s Yoshio Yoshida. These are evaluations grounded in on-field performance and results, and should be read as distinct from personal attacks.
