The story
On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board (known as “Geha”), posters were chatting based on Weekly Famitsu’s Top 30 sales chart. The talk centered on reports that nearly 30,000 copies of Wolverine are still sitting unsold in the market, and that a brand-new first-party title had already dropped out of the rankings in just its third week on sale. The thread also brought up whether bundle editions of Dragon Quest XI S and Octopath Traveler would end up in bargain bins (so-called “wagon sales”), and — as usual — the regular back-and-forth continued over whether it’s Switch 2’s third-party games or PS5’s first-party games that are really struggling.
What people said
Ace Combat really did sell well, damn, impressive!! …wait, what?
PS5 ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE
63,013 units
PS4 ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN 158,968 units (Media Create estimate: 200,000)
PS5, where first-party games don't sell
Are you still pushing that lie?
PS5 is the one where neither first-party nor third-party games sell, though…
Is that some kind of Sony pride thing?
Seriously, what is this lol
there's still almost 30,000 copies out there.
What are they gonna do about this……
Dump it in Sendai's New Year's first sale (hatsuuri)
It's really just a question of how many of the 7 copies will be left, after all…
Lol, since it's rated CERO Z (Japan's "18+/adults only" rating), they'd have to disclose the contents just to make one of these as a grab bag
So the product name ends up being "Grab Bag with Wolverine Inside" lol
If they sold it as an age-restricted "Adults-Only Grab Bag," wouldn't that sound a bit milder?
Even though what's inside is still just Wolverine
They really need to wise up and just let people pay to upgrade from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version already
Dragon Quest is the kind of game that quietly keeps selling over the long haul, so it won't end up in the bargain bin
A CERO Z misery grab-bag
guaranteed to have Wolverine as the big reveal
Amazing… I guess that 2,000 yen trade-in price really was foreshadowing after all
Going by today's sell-through rate, GEO's (a Japanese used-game retail chain) trade-in price is probably going to drop again
There's still a week left until the one-month mark since release, so it'll be worth watching how far it falls by then
Any chance it hits 15-15 before the year's out?
If all you can say is it's "selling" at 23-7, that's already a bad sign
and it looks like next week's sales might be down to just 3 copies or so
At this point, pretty much nobody but collectors would want to buy Dragon Quest XI S when it has zero new content added, right?
The original came out 9 years ago, and even the "S" version is 7 years old
The Switch version of DQ11S started with 300,000 retail copies in its first week and went on to sell over a million at retail alone as a long-term seller,
so it'll probably just keep selling the same way as an extension of that
It's not like there are hundreds of thousands of units in inventory — there's only around 14,000 copies left, after all
There are a lot of "green" titles, but somehow or other… is Octopath Traveler going to be okay?
The Octopath Traveler set had a small shipment to begin with, and it's aimed at customers who don't already own both games, so this is about what you'd expect
If it's only a handful of copies sitting in stores nationwide, that's not enough to end up in the bargain bin
Maybe they'll just bury it in some desert somewhere
Background and Key Points of This Topic
The Famitsu Top 30 is a weekly package-sales ranking compiled from major domestic retailers in Japan, and it doesn’t reflect digital download sales. Because of this, recurring arguments like “Switch 2 is where third-party games don’t sell” or “PS5 is where first-party games don’t sell” tend to turn into shouting matches based on only part of the full picture, and this thread never reached any real conclusion either. Figures that came up, like “30,000 unsold copies of Wolverine” or a “2,000 yen trade-in price,” are also just speculation based on movements at certain stores or in the used-game market — not official figures released by the publisher — so some caution is warranted. Terms like “wagon” (bargain bin), “fukubukuro” (New Year’s lucky grab bag), and “utsubukuro” (literally “gloom bag,” a pun on fukubukuro) are also just slang that 5ch users commonly throw around for games that aren’t selling well, and don’t necessarily mean an actual clearance sale has been decided on.
