The story
The US Department of Defense has announced plans to livestream the firing-squad execution of former Army Major Nidal Hasan, the death row inmate who shot and killed 13 people at Fort Hood Army base in Texas in 2009. Defense Secretary Hegseth explained, “We wanted people to be able to see it.” It will reportedly be the first execution carried out by the US military in 64 years — since 1961 — with the execution scheduled for December 3rd. Reaction poured in on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (general live-commentary) board as soon as the news broke, with opinions split over whether the livestream is appropriate and how many people would actually want to watch it.

What people said
Didn't a lethal injection execution fail recently — for a female death row inmate?
That's the Wild West for you.
Gore videos are mostly garbage quality from some cheap Chinese phone anyway.
They're not seriously livestreaming it to the general public too, are they?
If so, that's one messed-up country.
In another video, Posobiec asked Hegseth what death row inmate Hasan's last wish was.
Hegseth replied, "Who cares. See you on December 3rd." December 3rd is Hasan's scheduled execution date.
The last time the US military carried out an execution was in 1961, when death row inmate John Bennett was hanged for rape and attempted murder.
Wait, they caught the guy who did JonBenét? (mixing up "John Bennett," the executed soldier, with JonBenét Ramsey, the famous unsolved murder case)
I'd hate for it to just pop up while I'm scrolling through shorts, lol
That beats just having the state execute someone off in a corner where we have no idea it's happening.
Should we bring back the Colosseum?
If they let you buy gems with real money and aim and fire them yourself, that'd probably make a killing.
If a soldier commits a crime within the military, it goes to a court-martial instead of a regular trial, right?
Why isn't filming allowed?
Trump's not a soldier, though, so he's not subject to military law.
Then they should just transfer the scum from states without the death penalty over here and off them, lol
As a rule, punishment can only be carried out under the law of the state where the crime happened,
so you can't transfer a prisoner from a state without the death penalty to one that has it just to execute them.
That said, for federal crimes, if a federal court hands down a death sentence, it does happen — but even then it's not about moving someone from a non-death-penalty state to one that has it; it's carried out under federal law at a federal facility that has capital punishment from the start.
He killed 13 people and wounded 31. Afterward, he said it was revenge for the wars the US was waging in the Islamic world.
Well, guess that's just how it goes then.
I think it's exactly this kind of repeated "guess that's just how it goes" thinking that ends up dismantling our rights and freedoms.
Seriously though, is there anyone who actually wants to watch that?
There are fans of Mexican gore videos even in Japan, you know.
That's just a niche fetish for a tiny minority though.
There's no way enough people would watch it to justify the government livestreaming it.
Just let whoever wants to watch, watch.
It's not like they're chasing view counts anyway.
The day we become nothing but beasts that happen to speak human language isn't far off.
Background and key points of this story
The US military has not carried out an execution in 64 years — not since 1961, when death row inmate John Bennett was hanged for rape and attempted murder. Hasan, the former Army major now scheduled for execution, opened fire at a medical facility on base in 2009 while awaiting deployment to Afghanistan, killing 13 people and wounding 31; he later said it was revenge for US military action in the Islamic world. Because the case involves a member of the military, it was tried by court-martial rather than an ordinary state criminal court, and as several legally-informed posts in the thread explained, this brings in procedures different from the usual death penalty system — such as the question of transferring a prisoner across state lines to a facility with capital punishment. There were also voices questioning whether the announcement’s phrase “so that people can watch” meant a limited stream for victims’ families and other relevant parties, or a full public broadcast — this was left unclear. As of this report, the details of the stream’s scope have not been disclosed.
