The story
A photo showing a staff member at what looks like a Jiro-style ramen shop barking “NUMBER!!!” at a customer has become a hot topic on 5ch. Jiro-style ramen is known for its unique “call” ordering system, and customers who don’t know the drill reportedly sometimes get harshly scolded. In the thread, opinions clashed between those likening the service to “the military or a prison” and those arguing that customers who show up not knowing the rules are partly to blame. The discussion also branched into the attitude of a Kyoto location and the differences with copycat shops.
What people said
Not following Jiro's rules = it's your own fault, so this answer basically says nothing at all.
So if you're "at fault" they yell at you…?
Lmao, the answer literally says they don't yell at customers who did nothing wrong.
Do they size up the customer first?
Or is it totally random?
which is why I never do.
Just eat it in Tokyo then.
This place is such a nightmare zone lol
I'm never going to a shop like this, ever.
A shop that won't even let you eat the ramen you ordered? Wild. No way I'm going near that.
Would they get the same treatment even as a scary-looking guy?
At the Kabukicho branch, when actual thugs showed up they were treated super politely lol
The Jimbocho branch is seriously nasty.
The taste is actually totally different between branches
though most of them are just bad.
Only people who know what they're getting into should go.
The knockoff shops are way more popular and have way more locations, and they run a normal business, so it's no wonder people get confused.
Re: #44
Showing up without even looking up the house rules is the dumb move here.
Wow lol, you're totally brainwashed lmao
If you're seriously saying that, you're already a lost cause.
Even people who seem to actually understand these baffling rules are confused by this.
Shouldn't the normal rule be that staff don't yell at all unless the customer themselves starts yelling or being intimidating to the point they feel physically threatened — not some vague notion of "fault"?
We yell before anyone can pull that kind of "logic harassment" on us. (ロジハラ = "logic harassment," slang for cornering someone with airtight logic)
What kind of upbringing produces that?
It's not about being a server, it's just a bad upbringing
otherwise you wouldn't work at a place like this.

Background and Key Points of the Debate
Jiro-style ramen traces back to the original shop in Mita, Tokyo, and the group of restaurants descended from it is known for a unique “call” ordering system where customers tell staff themselves how much topping, garlic, etc. they want. How shops treat customers who don’t know this etiquette varies a lot by location — a culture that favors regulars and uses blunt, harsh language has come to be accepted as part of “Jirorian” (devoted Jiro fan) culture, but to first-timers it can easily come across as baffling and intimidating. The thread split between people who framed a customer’s lack of knowledge as “their own fault” to justify the harsh treatment, and people who argued that yelling at customers without properly explaining the rules is on the shop. It’s also easy to get confused here without knowing the difference between the original Jiro-style shops and the many derivative/copycat (“inspired”) shops, which differ from the original in both taste and service.
