Jiro-Style Ramen Shop Barks “NUMBER!!” at Customers — I’m Like “???” — 5ch Divided

The story

A photo showing a staff member at what looks like a Jiro-style ramen shop barking “NUMBER!!!” at a customer has become a hot topic on 5ch. Jiro-style ramen is known for its unique “call” ordering system, and customers who don’t know the drill reportedly sometimes get harshly scolded. In the thread, opinions clashed between those likening the service to “the military or a prison” and those arguing that customers who show up not knowing the rules are partly to blame. The discussion also branched into the attitude of a Kyoto location and the differences with copycat shops.

The vibe here is straight-up military or prison.
9AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:06
Going to Jiro in Kyoto is just rock bottom, honestly.
12AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:07
Shop: 😰

Customer's backstory: 🤨

Re: #12
Not following Jiro's rules = it's your own fault, so this answer basically says nothing at all.
26AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:20
Re: #12
So if you're "at fault" they yell at you…?
51AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:36
Re: #12
Lmao, the answer literally says they don't yell at customers who did nothing wrong.
15AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:09
So that's what Kyoto Jiro is like, huh lol
Do they size up the customer first?
Or is it totally random?
16AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:11
You're better off not going to creepy shops like this
which is why I never do.
18AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:12
Everyone kept hyping up Jiro so much that when I went to Tokyo I tried the Omiya branch, but honestly the "inspired" (copycat) shop back home in my prefecture was tastier.

Re: #18
Just eat it in Tokyo then.

Re: #21
This place is such a nightmare zone lol
I'm never going to a shop like this, ever.
44AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:33
Re: #21
A shop that won't even let you eat the ramen you ordered? Wild. No way I'm going near that.
27AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:20
Going to the original shop just to eat bad food and feel miserable is on you.
28AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:20
I heard the "Yume o Whatever" place has decent service though (likely referring to Yume wo Katare, a Jiro-style chain)
30AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:21
I want some yakuza-looking YouTuber to go there as a bit
Would they get the same treatment even as a scary-looking guy?
53AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:36
Re: #30
At the Kabukicho branch, when actual thugs showed up they were treated super politely lol
32AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:24
They'll probably still say it's the customer's fault even when the shop never explained anything.
34AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:26
Honestly, part of the draw of going is watching newbies get yelled at.
35AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:27
[Sign: "This is a Jiro-style shop"] ← tastes basically the same no matter where you eat it 🤮
37AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:28
Re: #35
The Jimbocho branch is seriously nasty.
47AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:34
Re: #35
The taste is actually totally different between branches
though most of them are just bad.
36AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:28
At this rate you can't go unless you've got a friend who really knows the ropes.
41AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:30
In this day and age, going to Jiro without even knowing what kind of place it is and then whining "the staff was so mean to meee" — come on, enough already
Only people who know what they're getting into should go.
73AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:47
Re: #41
The knockoff shops are way more popular and have way more locations, and they run a normal business, so it's no wonder people get confused.
46AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:34
Re: #43
Re: #44
Showing up without even looking up the house rules is the dumb move here.
54AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:37
Re: #46
Wow lol, you're totally brainwashed lmao
55AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:37
Re: #46
If you're seriously saying that, you're already a lost cause.
57AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:38
Re: #46
Even people who seem to actually understand these baffling rules are confused by this.
82AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:52
They say they don't yell at customers who did nothing wrong, but would you get yelled at for, like, spilling water?
Shouldn't the normal rule be that staff don't yell at all unless the customer themselves starts yelling or being intimidating to the point they feel physically threatened — not some vague notion of "fault"?
84AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:53
Re: #82
We yell before anyone can pull that kind of "logic harassment" on us. (ロジハラ = "logic harassment," slang for cornering someone with airtight logic)
85AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:55
Why is the attitude this extreme?
What kind of upbringing produces that?
89AnonymousOct 8, 2026 22:58
Re: #85
It's not about being a server, it's just a bad upbringing
otherwise you wouldn't work at a place like this.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Jiro-style ramen traces back to the original shop in Mita, Tokyo, and the group of restaurants descended from it is known for a unique “call” ordering system where customers tell staff themselves how much topping, garlic, etc. they want. How shops treat customers who don’t know this etiquette varies a lot by location — a culture that favors regulars and uses blunt, harsh language has come to be accepted as part of “Jirorian” (devoted Jiro fan) culture, but to first-timers it can easily come across as baffling and intimidating. The thread split between people who framed a customer’s lack of knowledge as “their own fault” to justify the harsh treatment, and people who argued that yelling at customers without properly explaining the rules is on the shop. It’s also easy to get confused here without knowing the difference between the original Jiro-style shops and the many derivative/copycat (“inspired”) shops, which differ from the original in both taste and service.
