The story

Actress Kato Rosa (41) looked back on 14 years of raising her children in France on TV Asahi’s “After My Husband Falls Asleep,” confessing that she gained over 20kg during pregnancy and that “just living through it was tough.” Kato married former Japan national team soccer player Daisuke Matsui in 2011 and announced their divorce last summer. On 5ch, reactions ranged from the weight-gain figure itself, to differences between France and Japan in childbirth costs and hospital stay lengths, to debate over whether Kato and Matsui’s marriage was ever really “well-matched” to begin with — opinions were split.

TV Asahi’s “mom-focused variety show” After My Husband Falls Asleep (Tuesdays, 12:15am), hosted by talent Miki Fujimoto and comedian Natsuko Yokozawa, aired late on the 6th. Actress Kato Rosa (41) looked back on 14 years of raising her children.

She married former Japan national team player Daisuke Matsui in 2011 at age 26 (it was revealed last summer that they had divorced). She is now the mother of two sons — a 14-year-old in 9th grade and a 12-year-old in 7th grade. She described her older son as “the quiet type, who likes manga and anime and doing things on his own,” and her younger son as “outgoing, loves soccer, and has a bit of a foul mouth.”

Gaining 20kg is just about right.

That's not Kato Rosa, that's Kato Pork Loin! (a pun — "rōsu" means pork loin, and sounds like "Rosa")

Didn't someone put a note on her car saying something like "yellow monkeys go home"?

French schools are especially rough right now — worried her sons might get bullied by second-generation immigrant kids.

I keep mixing up Tamaki Tina and Kato Rosa.

Japan's super-technicians — guys like Matsui, Kakitani, and Ono — why couldn't any of them make it to one of the Big Three leagues (England, Spain, Italy)?

Meanwhile, this is apparently what you get after giving birth at a public hospital in Japan

Maybe it's because they spend money on stuff like this that Japan can't make childbirth free
28AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:51
Re: #22 That's probably exactly why so many foreigners come to Japan to give birth.

Re: #22 Isn't this just the celebratory meal? Though at a fancy "celebrity" hospital, maybe every meal looks like this.

Gained weight from pregnancy? lol the baby's only like 3kg though lol
65AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:18
Re: #41 The baby's about 3kg, amniotic fluid and placenta about 1kg, and apparently around 4kg goes toward the increased blood volume and breast development needed for breastfeeding. Factoring all that in, the recommended total weight gain from pre-pregnancy weight is said to be roughly 10-13kg.

Guys like Matsui can't do coaching or commentary either — no future in it.

Re: #49 He didn't make much money as a player, and he's got no legend status either, so it's all downhill from here.

Honestly, something felt off from the moment Daisuke Matsui and Kato Rosa got married. Matsui was a good soccer player, sure, but not really big-name enough to be marrying an actress as famous as Kato Rosa. It clearly felt like a mismatch.

– She was discharged after a 2-night, 3-day stay — about half the hospital stay length in Japan.
Japanese babies get treated for jaundice, so they can't be discharged right away.
85AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:29
Re: #57 When I gave birth in America, I was discharged after 2 nights/3 days too, but the baby had jaundice so they told me to come in for checkups every day — that was rough.
87AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:33
Re: #79 Given Re: #57, that's probably not realistic. Apparently it used to be a full week's stay, so now that it's down to 5 days, they're actually doing pretty well.

If it's completely free, that's great — that's France for you, a real welfare state. In Japan you'd have to pay the full ¥1 million out of pocket, you know? Though I guess for someone like her, ¥1 million is pocket change, so maybe that's not even the point.
77AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:24
Re: #69 Where'd you get ¥1 million from? The national average cost is ¥520,000, and you get a ¥500,000 lump-sum benefit, so you actually only end up paying about ¥20,000.
79AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:24
In countries other than Japan, it seems like you get discharged half a day or a day after giving birth. Which basically means there's no time to even eat that celebratory meal. That's apparently why childbirth is fully free in a lot of countries. Maybe Japan could make it fully free too if it skipped the long hospital stay. Pregnant women in Japan stay in the hospital for about a week, right?
88AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:33
Re: #79 I've given birth in both Japan and America, and honestly staying in the hospital for about a week is better for your body's recovery. These days even in Japan, a normal delivery means about 4-5 days of hospital stay.

Background and key points of this discussion

Kato Rosa married former Japan national team soccer player Daisuke Matsui in 2011 and spent 14 years raising their children in France, before announcing their divorce last summer. This latest confession stems from her looking back on those years on “After My Husband Falls Asleep,” and the concrete figure of gaining over 20kg during pregnancy became the spark for discussion. The thread split mainly into two camps. One was over whether that weight gain was reasonable — medically, the recommended gain from pre-pregnancy weight is around 10-13kg, making over 20kg higher than average. The other was a Japan-France comparison of childbirth costs and hospital stay length: in France, childbirth is nearly free but the hospital stay is short at 2-3 days, whereas in Japan the stay runs around 4-5 days with some costs still falling on the patient. Neither the thread nor news reports have revealed the actual reason for the divorce or Matsui’s side of things, so it’s worth noting that most of the comments remain speculation.
