Karen Takizawa: “If I Could Only Bring One Seasoning to a Desert Island, It’d Be Mirin” — 5ch Mostly Says Soy Sauce or Salt

The story

On Fuji TV’s “Kamaitachi’s Instant Answer!”, talent Karen Takizawa said, “If I could only bring one seasoning to a desert island, mirin would do,” and the story was picked up on 5ch. The thread saw a string of practical objections — “salt can be made from seawater, so soy sauce or sugar is more useful,” “mirin alone is hard to use without dashi or soy sauce” — but the discussion also veered off into a debate over the premise itself, namely whether a desert island is guaranteed to even have an ocean nearby, and things never quite settled.

Talent Karen Takizawa (34) appeared on Fuji TV’s “Kamaitachi’s Instant Answer! — Solve Your Problems in 60 Seconds” (9:00 PM), which aired on the 2nd, and revealed the seasoning she uses most.

During the studio talk, MC and Kamaitachi member Ryuichi Hamaie asked, “Is there a seasoning you use a lot?” Takizawa declared, “Number one is mirin,” adding, “If I didn’t have mirin… say I could only bring one seasoning to a desert island, mirin would do.”

Soy sauce or miso.
You can get salt from seawater anyway.
5AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:46
With pepper you can handle meat or fish without stress
salt's covered by seawater anyway.
6AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:47
It also works as a substitute for sake,
plus it's got sweetness and umami.
7AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:48
Soy sauce, probably.
For eating fish you catch, soy sauce's the way.
Salt can be made from seawater.
9AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:51
Sugar, I'd say.
Getting sugar on your own isn't exactly easy either.
11AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:53
I thought "mirin, makes sense," but is everyone here just dumping on it?
12AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:53
Assuming you can just walk to a beach just because it's called a desert "island" is naive.
13AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:54
Mirin, right? Reducing it down (nikiri-style) also adds a lot of depth to the flavor.
16AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:55
You can source salt locally, so I'd go with vinegar.
18AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:57
Shiro-dashi (white dashi) is the only choice
it's already got sugar, soy sauce, mirin, and amino acids in it.
20AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:57
Sugar, for sure.
Just evaporate some seawater for the salt.
23AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:02
If it's mirin-tier, I'd pick Ajinomoto or Hi-Mi (MSG-based seasonings) instead
goes with more things than mirin does.

Being handed just one seasoning on a desert island — what are you even supposed to do with that?
25AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:02
Re: #3
Why is it a given that a desert island has an ocean?
28AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:06
Re: #25
What kind of island doesn't have an ocean?
38AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:13
Re: #28
Like an island in Lake Biwa, maybe?
Chikubu Island or something.
27AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:04
What exactly leads to you ending up on a desert island in the first place?
And who's this person who only lets you bring one seasoning?
29AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:06
Mirin alone is hard to use without soy sauce or dashi.
Might as well just take sugar.
30AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:07
Soy sauce is the only real choice.
Pour it on anything — sand, rope, whatever — and it becomes edible somehow.
31AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:09
Salt's everywhere around a desert island anyway.
43AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:15
Making salt with a salt field would be a hassle,
but you could catch fish and simmer them in seawater (maasu-ni style).
44AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:17
If you're allowed fire and a pot, you can make salt.
Making it purely by sun-drying would be pretty tough since it depends so much on the weather.
45AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:17
Mentsuyu (noodle soup base) seems like it'd be better, honestly.
48AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:20
Salt is exactly what you don't need on a desert island, Yamauchi.
Karen's got it right.
49AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:21
Asahi Ponzu, obviously, if you think about it rationally.
Though it's hard to find on shelves lately.
52AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:23
Whenever this kind of topic comes up,

a lot of people picture a desert island as

some perpetually-summer place surrounded by ocean.

But that's not necessarily true
so it could be a forested area with no sea or rivers in sight, or it could be ringed by sheer cliffs,
or it could be a frozen wasteland that's below freezing year-round.

Re: #52
Without any defined premise, there's no point overthinking it.
58AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:26
Re: #52
If you're gonna go there, the answer just ends up being "well, I'm not going to a desert island in the first place."
62AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:29
These "what would you bring to a desert island" threads never have a defined premise, so arguing about it is kind of pointless anyway.
75AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:44
No, mirin's the right answer. Salt's covered — there's seawater.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“If you could only bring one thing to a desert island” is a classic variety-show question, and this time too the thread drifted off-topic on 5ch because the premise — whether there’s an ocean nearby, whether fire or a pot are available, and so on — was never spelled out. The idea that salt can be made by boiling down seawater came up repeatedly, but in practice sun-drying it and securing fuel aren’t that simple, and some pushed back on the very assumption that salt can be “sourced locally.” The majority view was that mirin alone can’t substitute for saltiness or dashi, and that soy sauce or miso are more versatile — but it tends to go unmentioned that Takizawa’s comment was just an offhand remark on a variety show, not an attempt to win some optimal-survival-strategy contest.
