IH Stoves on High Heat vs. Teflon Wear: 5ch Clash Over ‘Teflon’s Trash, It Breaks Right Away’

From our other sites

The story

In a thread on 5ch’s Nova (VIP) board, a poster complained that their Teflon frying pan’s coating kept peeling and burning, only to be met with a wave of replies suggesting the real problem was how they were using it. The flashpoint was overheating from cranking an induction (IH) stove to high heat, plus scrubbing the pan hard with detergent during cleanup. The original poster kept insisting that “everything would be solved if Teflon were made more durable,” but was met with counterarguments that cast-iron pans last for years as long as you avoid letting them boil dry, and that commercial-grade Teflon coatings hold up fine — leaving the two sides talking past each other to the end.

A menace to society. Garbage.
16AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:27
You can avoid overheating on an IH stove, you know
21AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:28
Re: #16
It overheats because you're running the IH stove at setting 5 or higher
23AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:29
Pointless — even if Tefal quits, Chinese manufacturers will just keep churning them out 🥴
24AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:30
Re: #23
I'm saying make Teflon more durable — hurry up with the technical breakthrough already
28AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:31
Using it on high heat and scrubbing way harder than necessary — sounds like a germophobe who's gone senile and doesn't know how to handle things properly
32AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:32
Re: #28
I'd think cast iron would be perfect for that (type of person), though
29AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:31
So you can't handle it properly, yet you complain about Teflon?
Just stick to pots already
31AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:32
Re: #29
Teflon's garbage, it breaks right away. I want them to fix it
34AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:33
Commercial-grade Teflon holds up fine
37AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:33
Re: #34
If it survives being blasted on high heat, great
39AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:34
Re: #37
As long as you don't let it boil dry, it'll last years
The handle gets hot, though
35AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:33
So you admit it's your own fault, but you still won't change anything? lol
38AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:34
Re: #35
Teflon should just adapt to bad handling
41AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:35
Re: #1
If you're bad at cooking and keep wrecking your Teflon pan right away, why keep rebuying something that clearly can't take it?
43AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:36
Re: #41
With cast iron, detergent strips the seasoning so it never builds up, so I tossed it
46AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:38
This isn't really about Teflon at all
Turns out the cause wasn't just one person
48AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:39
Re: #46
Making Teflon more durable would solve every problem
49AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:41
Re: #43
Then just keep a cast-iron pan in your own room
Why keep buying Teflon over and over? You're the one who keeps buying it and getting mad, that's all
53AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:43
Re: #49
Complaining about Teflon and asking the maker to improve it actually solves the problem way better
52AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:43
I don't want the company burning staff time and money on some idiot who's using the product in ways it was never meant for
54AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:43
Re: #52
Do it like Apple does — I don't care how expensive it gets, just do it
56AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:45
Re: #54
If you had infinite money, replacing it wouldn't be a problem, right?
57AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:46
Re: #56
I want to use it for a long time. I like this one — I just want them to make it more durable
58AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:46
Re: #53
That's not the maker's problem, it's yours — you're using it in a way that wrecks it within months

If normal use made it unusable within months, nobody would buy it and Teflon would've vanished from the market 20 years ago
62AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:48
Re: #58
I'm saying it's a defective product if it breaks that fast just from blasting it on IH high heat and washing it like in the detergent commercials every day until every last bit of oil is gone
63AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:48
I'm complaining about a defective product, that's all
67AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:50
Re: #65
It's absurd that it breaks just from using it the way TV commercials show
70AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:51
Re: #67
Don't treat something that isn't a TV like it's a TV
74AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:53
If you don't want people complaining, don't handle it the wrong way just because a commercial or TV show showed you to
76AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:53
Re: #74
You're using it wrong
77AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:54
Re: #76
I'm doing it exactly like I saw on TV
78AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:55
Re: #77
But on TV they're not using it every single day
80AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:56
Re: #78
It's absurd that using it the way TV shows breaks it. TV should be spreading the correct way to handle it — since it doesn't, people end up doing it wrong and breaking it
83AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:57
Re: #80
Was it a gorilla doing the washing on TV?
86AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:59
Re: #80
It's total garbage if a frying pan can't even last 5 years
79AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:55
With a cast-iron pan, you don't need to "season" it over time if you just reapply an oxide layer each time
82AnonymousSep 30, 2026 19:57
Re: #79
I don't have time to waste doing something like that every single day
102AnonymousSep 30, 2026 20:05
Don't let TV get away with spreading the wrong way to use it
105AnonymousSep 30, 2026 20:07
Re: #102
Did you mess up your own sockpuppet reply? (self-reply slip)
106AnonymousSep 30, 2026 20:07
Re: #102
That's right! The manufacturer's an accomplice too

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Teflon (fluororesin) coatings tend to degrade when exposed to high heat above roughly 260°C, which is why most manufacturers’ manuals explicitly warn to use “medium heat or lower” and to strictly avoid letting the pan boil dry. Because induction (IH) stoves can heat the bottom of a pan directly once you crank up the power setting, continuing to use “high heat” out of gas-stove habit tends to accelerate coating breakdown. The thread split over whether to view this wear as a “product defect” or as “user error in heat settings and care,” and the original poster and those pushing back never found common ground. It’s also worth noting, as a separate caveat from Teflon, that while cast-iron pans last a long time if you maintain their oil seasoning, scrubbing that seasoning off with detergent actually makes them more prone to rust.
