ADHD College Student Mixes Up Course Registration Deadline With Start Date — Again

The story

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (an anything-goes live-commentary board), a thread was started by a 24-year-old college student diagnosed with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) reporting that they had mistaken the course-registration deadline for the start date and missed the window entirely. The poster said they had repeated a grade in high school and taken a six-month leave of absence, and that this was already their second course-registration blunder. The thread debated the effects and side effects of medications like Concerta, how ADHD compares with ASD in terms of social adaptability, and whether to consult the university’s student affairs office. Meanwhile, some replies questioned the framing itself — “Isn’t this more a scheduling problem than a registration mistake?” — leaving reactions to the story divided.

24, I'm a student

Re: #8
I do want to be independent
I'm in a student apartment right now anyway
No way I'm living with some hysterical old hag
13AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:37
Re: #10
I wonder who made her hysterical in the first place…
16AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:38
Re: #10
You're getting your college paid for by someone else — you shouldn't be writing stuff like that
19AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:40
Food service is a nightmare for ADHD since it demands multitasking
Concerta kicks in fast, but you build tolerance just as fast, so it keeps working less and less
26AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:43
Re: #19
I screwed up about 20 times in a year or so
It got even worse after my boss got swapped for a hysterical old hag
After I fled to hotel housekeeping my boss was really great, and honestly it was fun right up until I ended up hospitalized
20AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:40
Graduating? Dropping out? What's the plan after that?
You've got to make it on your own, you know?
22AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:41
Re: #20
Yeah
I've already been hospitalized in a psych ward 3 times
29AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:48
When I took Concerta I got depressed, and got sleepy instead of alert — it was the worst
30AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:49
Re: #29
The feeling when it starts wearing off is brutal
I bet actual stimulants (like meth) are way more intense
31AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:49
ADHD is more socially unfit than ASD, isn't it
Not cut out for blue-collar or white-collar work
35AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:52
Re: #31
Nah, that's not true
ASD's worse off — there isn't even medication for it
39AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:54
Re: #31
Making careless mistakes constantly already disqualifies you from any job
And unlike ASD, there's no special skill like photographic memory or flash mental math to make up for it
32AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:50
Concerta wearing off gets a lot milder if you combine it with Abilify
33AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:51
Re: #32
Never taken that one
I've taken Risperdal though
38AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:54
How'd you mess up the registration exactly?
42AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:57
Re: #38
What I thought was the registration start date turned out to be the final day (cutoff at 11am)
47AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:00
Re: #42
That's not really a "messed up the registration" story…
40AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:55
Re: #35
Sure, ASD has no meds, but there are jobs it can really click with
ADHD can dull the symptoms with meds, but you still can't match a neurotypical person
43AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:57
Re: #40
It's way too rough for someone with ADHD and depression to pretend to be neurotypical~
44AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:57
Do people really mess up that much though?
I'm diagnosed ADHD too and never had a problem
46AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:58
Re: #44
There's a tendency to just assume things
That's bitten me before too — missed handing in quizzes and reports because of it
48AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:00
Re: #44
Are you the hyperactive-only type without the inattentive part? That's rare, but…
If you were diagnosed you probably took the CAARS too — check your inattentiveness subscore, that'll tell you how mistake-prone your type really is
49AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:00
Re: #47
You are messing up though
58AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:04
Re: #49
That's more a scheduling mistake than a registration mistake
From how the thread's written, I figured it meant something like "failed to register for a required class" or "the classes I registered for don't add up to enough credits"
59AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:05
Re: #58
I ended up giving up on my Bookkeeping Level 2 certification (boki nikyu) because I skipped a class I needed to take
50AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:01
It's not too late — just take a leave of absence
53AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:02
Re: #50
Already done that once
Repeated a grade in high school, took a six-month leave, and now I'm a 24-year-old student
54AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:02
Re: #52
When it comes to course registration, zero issues at all
57AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:03
Re: #54
Feels like there should be somewhere to consult, like the student affairs office or whatever
Though if they handled every case individually it'd never end, so universities can be pretty cold about it
60AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:06
Don't they send an email a few days before the deadline to people who haven't registered at all?
66AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:07
Re: #60
Nope, they sure don't!
62AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:06
Do you have a graduation thesis?
I was in the law department so I didn't have one, which was a lifesaver — but you're probably better off starting early
64AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:06
Re: #62
Since I took a leave of absence I'm not in a seminar, so I get to skip the thesis
68AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:13
Re: #67
Instead of going to all that effort, just do things properly one at a time
69AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:15
Re: #68
I only just learned about this so I'm no expert, but isn't "not being able to do that" kind of the bug itself?
Might be easier to lean on social skills instead
Build yourself a character people give a pass to
77AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:22
Re: #69
That's true, but if OP actually had social skills, everyday chats with friends would've sorted out the registration thing long before it turned into "thought the last day was the first day"
Probably doesn't have any friends, does he
79AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:22
Re: #77
No way there are any, huh
82AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:26
Re: #77Re: #79
Yeah, that's fair actually
Even just a "hey, it's due tomorrow" from a friend would've helped
Would be nice to have an understanding friend though
Didn't you join any clubs?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a developmental disorder marked by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, typically treated with medications such as Concerta and Strattera — though their effectiveness varies by individual, and some users report that continued use builds tolerance, making the drugs less effective over time. CAARS, an assessment scale used in diagnosis, quantifies traits like inattentiveness and hyperactivity; as one reply notes, checking one’s inattentiveness subscore is said to give a rough sense of how mistake-prone a person is. The thread also split over interpretation — whether this genuinely counted as a “course-registration mistake” or was simply a misread deadline — with reactions differing depending on whether readers took the post literally or read it against the fuller context. The recurring comparison of whether ADHD or ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is more disadvantageous socially also came up, but it’s worth noting this isn’t something medically settled either way — it depends on individual traits and circumstances.
