Terranigma Returns in 2027 — Beloved SNES Action RPG Coming to Modern Consoles

Terranigma, the action RPG released for the Super Famicom in 1995, has been confirmed for a multi-platform release in 2027, announced during “Pixel Arcadia – The Future of Retro.” The game is known for its development by Chunsoft and a soundtrack by Yoko Kanno, but on the thread, viewers of the trailer pointed out that it “looks like a straight port of the SFC version,” while others offered a more cynical take — “this one’s probably going to flop too” — citing how recent retro remakes have consistently struggled.

This makes me happy, but I'm a little worried it'll turn into something weird.

So Square Enix's remake cash-grab strategy has reached this far, huh.

Nah, Square Enix isn't the one remaking this one.
7Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 07:42:37.92ID:pTSNSsLP0
Coincidently this turned out to be Square Enix?? lol And here I didn't even read post 1 lol

Chunsoft is the developer.

"Coincidentally" (奇しくも, kushikumo)

"Kushikumo" means "coincidentally" or "curiously enough."
It's used when an unusual coincidence piles up, or when it feels like something inexplicable is at work.
It's not pronounced "kishikumo" — it's "kushikumo."

Reading and meaning:
Reading: kushikumo
Meaning: curiously, coincidentally, mysteriously

People always used to joke around that it gave them naughty (ecchi) ideas.
9Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 07:43:33.78ID:zScIRbsi0
Slapstick's always the odd one out. (a weapon from the game)
11Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 07:44:51.91ID:PmBfTeW00
What kind of remake is this even?
I'd be happy if it's full 3D,
but it'd be a shame if it ends up like that HD-2D action RPG from a while back.
21Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:03:43.22ID:j7PCgJ1g0

Going by the trailer, it looks like a straight port of the SFC version.
12Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 07:46:26.84ID:3IYv/aW60
Paid 11,800 yen for it, but it was so boring I just rushed through and sold it off — by then the price had already crashed, so I only got 3,200 yen back.
15Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 07:50:56.54ID:ftWSVL590
Remake 46-okunen Monogatari too. (a.k.a. E.V.O.: Search for Eden)

Yeah, I'd love a remake of the PC-98 version.
16Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 07:53:05.53ID:s9hgQyJq0
Not really an action RPG fan.
I want something more like Dragon Quest XI.
19Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:02:53.46ID:cfHaDLDo0
If it's just a remaster, at least sell it as a trilogy set.
20Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:03:35.28ID:V0FtdLI10
Given the developer, it's probably just a remaster with a bit of extra polish.
24Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:06:19.87ID:f5k75Q+e0
Glad it's not Xeen developing this.
Get them working on a Romancing SaGa 3 remake already.
They can throw the entire FF7 remake budget at it for all I care.
35Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:13:57.18ID:NGNKxzIV0
>>24
Romancing SaGa 2 got that much acclaim, so hurry up with 3.

3's world is grittier and more realistic than 2's, so it doesn't really fit the cute, colorful direction they went with for 2.
25Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:07:25.64ID:8sNgvSli0
What about Gaia Genesis? (known overseas as Illusion of Gaia)
41Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:18:11.53ID:67ivS3RC0
>>25
Man, that's nostalgic~ I used to play that.
26Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:07:49.89ID:qMj0znmd0
Not Kamui Fujiwara's artwork, huh.
I've been waiting for this forever so I'm happy, but I just pray it doesn't turn out weird.
None of the original Quintet staff are probably even around anymore, so it'll likely be redesigned by people who have nothing to do with the original.
28Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:09:38.53ID:GRaf3Yv10
Goemon sold well because you got 12 (13) games for the price, but that won't work here.
31Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:12:48.55ID:HSFN3VxS0
>>28
Plenty of recent indie games are doing this kind of thing too, so there's clearly demand.
29Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:10:16.54ID:1hrw7JB80
Wait, what?! They're releasing it on Switch 2 too??
On low-spec hardware??!
32Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:13:16.35ID:NGNKxzIV0
A surface world and an underworld.
Getting a second shot at life.
Seems like it's all just this lately.
34Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:13:56.88ID:KOjban4M0
I feel like the story was good, but the game itself was garbage.
38Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:15:50.81ID:NGNKxzIV0
It was basically a trashy knockoff of the Seiken Densetsu series (the Mana series), and they're remaking it?
40Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:16:02.49ID:l4vQtMwf0
The art gives off serious "we probably shouldn't have done this" vibes.
42Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:18:45.84ID:sVk3seZu0
Heard Kamui Fujiwara restarted the DQ7 manga, but nobody's talking about it at all.
43Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:19:20.96ID:SgxvLb3E0
Not even prettier graphics, not even widescreen —
don't tell me it's really just a straight port.
44Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:22:00.62ID:vRt3YAmq0
Just release it as-is already, quit messing around with unnecessary remasters 😡
45Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:24:05.81ID:ILSyc1d40
Yoko Kanno did the soundtrack and it's going for crazy prices on the resale market —
that's the one thing I could never get my hands on.
47Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:27:16.07ID:Nu5tdPRm0
Let us switch the BGM back to the original tracks.
49Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:31:26.45ID:pvx6KB+D0
Bloody Mary was one of the toughest bosses in any action RPG, easily top three.
50Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:32:15.03ID:U3Y1yh/v0
Sunshine Ikezaki's playing through the old one right now. (comedian/YouTuber known for retro game streams)
51Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:35:13.61ID:sY2+FdVl0
Put out more collection-style releases like Goemon —
Oni and stuff too.
58Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:41:57.38ID:gTXjI+cg0
Live A Live didn't make waves either — it's all just nostalgia goggles.
Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia, Rudra no Hihou, Bahamut Lagoon —
they're all gonna flop, guaranteed, same as when old anime get remade and flop too.
60Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:45:49.07ID:HSFN3VxS0
>>58
Calling 500,000 copies sold "no impact" is a bit harsh.
67Anonymous2026/08/25(火) 08:57:43.78ID:NGNKxzIV0
>>58
Live A Live is basically the ultimate example of an HD-2D remake done right.
