Sankyu Mart Cancels Merch Launch After Fans Say It “Evokes M!LK”

The story

Sankyu Mart, a variety-goods chain where everything is priced at a flat 390 yen (429 yen tax included), has canceled the launch of “Growing Fast with Your Oshi and Milk!” — a line of fan-merch that had been set to open pre-orders on the 18th. The series, themed around fruit milk with milk- and cow-motif costumes for plush toys, acrylic keychains, and more, had been planned for release at stores nationwide from mid-November. The cancellation came after a wave of complaints from fans that the goods’ color lineup overlapped with the member colors of the five-member group “M!LK.” On 5channel threads, though, plenty of posters questioned the complaint itself, pointing out that “milk” is a generic word to begin with and that similar color lineups aren’t unusual for other idol merch either.

Sankyu Mart, the popular 390-yen (429 yen tax included) flat-price variety store operated by Elsonic Co., Ltd., updated its official site on the 18th to announce it was canceling the launch of “Growing Fast with Your Oshi and Milk!,” goods that had been set to open pre-orders that same day on the official online shop. The product had drawn a wave of comments saying it evoked the five-member dance-and-vocal group “M!LK.”

The series was themed around “fruit milk,” offering fan-merch items with milk and cow motifs — including costumes for plush toys, card holders, and acrylic frame keychains. Pre-orders were set to open online at noon on the 18th, with sales at stores nationwide to follow from mid-November.

Uh… even the 100-yen shops have merch that's blatantly Arashi- or Snow Man-coded though
Unlike Johnny's, is Stardust just strict about this?

Re: #3
It's not the agency kicking up a fuss, it's the fans
7AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:37
Can't tell without seeing a picture
8AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:39
"I'm not sleeping either, you know!!" (a well-known meme line, tossed in sarcastically here)
9AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:40
Can't tell at all, but I guess if fans look at it, it reads as Milk-ish
10AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:43
Re: #9
Something about it totally overlapping with the member colors
dunno the details though
11AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:44
Re: #9
M!LK's member colors are white, yellow, pink, red, and blue, so yeah, it was probably intentional
But complaining over something this minor is such a "well I'm a woman, so…" move (mocking people who play the gender-victim card to justify a complaint)

Re: #9
There's no green, purple, or orange — the usual "safe" colors for oshi-merch — so it is pretty blatant
Wait, has Milk had members quit or something?
15AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:47
So are they gonna ban selling milk next?
lol what an idiot
16AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:47
Can't make heads or tails of this from the text alone
17AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:48
They went to all the trouble of making it…

They should've at least shifted the colors, or put out like 8 color variants
18AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:48
They've probably already manufactured the stuff, so that's a huge loss
19AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:49
There's been a rise in this kind of mob hysteria where regular people have no clue what they're even mad about
20AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:50
Wait, does MiLK sell milk merch or something?
21AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:51
So "loving them so much it kills me" turned out to mean it literally, huh.
22AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:52
Milk's been around way longer, they should've just stood their ground
Did they really do a 5-color lineup?
34AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:56
Re: #22
Those 5 colors are literally M!LK's member colors
23AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:52
If anything, it's on them for naming themselves after a common noun like "milk"
At this rate no one could ever use dairy products in merch again
25AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:53
It's not even copyright infringement, so what's the actual problem?
Makes no sense
28AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:54
Feel bad for Sankyu Mart and the manufacturer
29AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:55
"Growing Fast with Your Oshi and Milk"
Whoever at the company approved that title is dumb, and whoever wrote that catchphrase — in-house or an outside copywriter — is way too dumb
30AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:55
Could this mean merch and accessories won't even be able to print "MILK" on them anymore?
Are this group's fans mostly the difficult type?
32AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:56
Don't name yourselves after everyday words like "milk"
You're the ones getting in everyone's way
33AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:56
No way… don't tell me they actually complained just because the colors overlapped?
35AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:56

Been active since way back then and only just now broke through
Gotta respect the persistence
37AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:57
You're the ones who used a common noun as your group name in the first place
You already swamped search results for "Stones," and you're still at it? (referencing past complaints that fans flooded web searches for an ordinary word)
38AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:58
M!LK, you're the ones causing the trouble here, so you should be the ones changing your name
40AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:59
Ugh, Johnny's fans causing trouble again?
44AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:01
Re: #40
Stardust fans, not Johnny's
42AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:59
Re: #1
Does this actually touch on copyright or portrait rights or anything?
48AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:03
I think it's about time companies started pushing back on complaints like this
49AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:04
They did use the word "oshi," after all
It's not a word used exclusively for idols, but you can see why people would read it as intentional
A retreat born from pushing it right up to the line
51AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:05
Stardust literally just put out a statement saying they'll deal strictly with slander and rights infringement
Whoever planned this was an idiot
52AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:05
So what does big sis P!nk have to say about all this?
53AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:07
What about Super Milk-chan, then?
62AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:10
Would something like this get people fired up nowadays?

Background and Points of Debate

M!LK is a group under Stardust Promotion whose member colors are white, yellow, pink, red, and blue — five colors in all. Since the new milk-themed merch used an almost identical five-color lineup, fans flagged it as “evocative” of the group. It’s easy to miss that no copyright or trademark infringement was ever established here — this was a voluntary cancellation by the company in response to complaints about impression alone. Thread opinion was split: some questioned why a mere color overlap should be enough to force a product’s cancellation, while others criticized the group for adopting a generic word like “milk” as its name in the first place. As the fan-merch market keeps expanding rapidly, clashes like this — between member colors or motifs and products from unrelated genres — seem likely to keep happening.
