Shohei Ohtani Lands on Injured List Amid Right Arm Inflammation — Reactions Pour In

The story

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that pitcher Shohei Ohtani (32) has been placed on the injured list with inflammation in his right biceps. Ohtani reportedly feels discomfort through his entire right arm when swinging the bat, and the pain in his left knee also remains. On the thread, many pointed to a recurring pattern going back to his Angels days — playing through underreported injuries until they turn serious — and an anecdote about Ohtani continuing full-power swings in the batting cage behind the dugout right up until he landed on the IL became a hot topic. Meanwhile, opinions were split between those who see the left knee as the more serious long-term issue and those worried about the impact on this year’s MVP race.

Speaking to local reporters before the game against the Marlins on the road in Miami, Roberts said of Ohtani: “He has pain in the biceps. Right now we’re just letting him rest and see how he recovers, and we’ll go from there.” On the specifics, he added: “According to the medical staff and trainers, he feels discomfort in the right upper arm when he swings the bat — you could say it affects the whole arm. He also still has pain in the left knee. But right now, I think the biceps discomfort is the main issue.”

This is what happens when you don't listen to anyone.
3AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:20
Even the way this is playing out is exactly the same disaster as his Angels days, lol.
38AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:29
Re: #3
What was even the point of the Angels' "management" back then — even that time it was Ohtani who kept pitching against doctor's orders.

Re: #3
Back in his Angels days it didn't matter since they weren't making the playoffs anyway, so going all-out all season was fine. But the Dodgers make the postseason every year, so I wish he'd think about that a bit more. Guess it's too late now though.
10AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:22
Apparently after getting dropped from the starting lineup, he spent his time sulking by taking full-power batting practice swings behind the dugout out of spite.

Re: #10
What's really messed up is that Roberts got absolutely torn apart for supposedly not stopping him, when actually it was Ohtani who underreported the injury and lied about it.
11AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:22
The fact that he lied to the team is the worst part of this.
13AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:22
Hiding an injury and continuing to play is seriously unacceptable for an adult.
Can this 32-year-old not even do basic workplace reporting ("hōrenso" — report/contact/consult, a core Japanese workplace norm)?
34AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:28
Re: #13
This changes everything if Ohtani was the one lying.
Everyone who was bashing Roberts owes him an apology.
14AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:23
He kept forcing himself to play by hiding an injury, and now it's turned into something irreversible (the third time counting back to his Angels days).

How many times is this guy going to repeat the same thing?
64AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:36
Re: #14
Wait, seriously, three times?
17AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:24
A hundred billion yen for a DH.
62AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:35
Re: #17
*Reminder: he's a pitcher currently in rehab.
19AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:24
Basically rehabbing his whole tenure, plus a cushy pitching schedule when he does throw, plus DH-only duty —
and after being coddled like that, he's already falling apart at 30? Come on, Ohtani.
20AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:24
The doctors reportedly said the success rate for a second Tommy John surgery is under 50%.
He's probably compensating for his elbow, which is throwing everything else out of whack.
His mechanics look kind of ugly now too — this seems pretty serious.
21AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:25
If his leg were really bad he wouldn't be running the bases like that, and if it is bad and he's still running like that, that's just reckless.
22AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:25
If Ippei were still around, this wouldn't have happened…… (Ippei Mizuhara, Ohtani's former interpreter)
23AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:25
Can't they void the long-term contract on the grounds that he lied?

The Dragons are waiting for him —
same blue uniform, so he should be fine with that. (the Chunichi Dragons, an NPB team also in blue)
24AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:25
Same as Ippei, who covered up his embezzlement.
25AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:25
He's a DH with all the time in the world to rest and stretch, no fatigue to speak of — so why is he getting hurt more than anyone else?
31AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:27
No, the knee is the real problem.
A torn meniscus never fully heals even with surgery.
Fluid builds up periodically for the rest of your life and has to be drained.
And it's the left knee, his plant leg, so he's probably done for.
51AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:32
Even the coverage in the US is starting to make him sound like kind of a nutcase — that's rough.
58AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:34
Re: #51
Once he got money stolen by Ippei, some people already started treating him as an oddball.
65AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:36
Re: #58
In the US it's less "had his money stolen" and more just "gambling guy" as far as the general perception goes.
69AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:37
He'll probably be fine after a couple months of proper rest.
121AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:57
Re: #69
It won't heal.
A knee like that basically means retirement territory.
77AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:41
This guy really doesn't seem to care about the team at all, lol.
81AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:42
Re: #77
Aren't you the one getting it backwards?
Ohtani doesn't exist for the team's sake — the team exists for Ohtani's sake.
86AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:43
Why does he want to play in games so badly?
Does it change how much money he gets paid?
90AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:44
Re: #86
Simply because he wants to be adored.
He doesn't want to get passed in home runs by Murakami or Okamoto.
124AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:57
Re: #86
Bonds won 4 straight MVPs.
If Ohtani wins MVP this year, he'll tie that at four in a row.
120AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:57
So in the end he couldn't surpass Ichiro after all.
132AnonymousSep 12, 2026 13:01
Re: #120
He's already crushing him by a landslide, as always.
123AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:57
Re: #121
Do you seriously believe his knee is actually hurt?
126AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:58
Re: #123
It's probably actually hurt, yeah.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The IL placement announced this time is for inflammation in the right biceps; according to Manager Roberts’ comments, the discomfort extends across the whole right arm during swings, while the left knee pain persists as well. That said, nothing in the team’s official comments confirms that Ohtani “misrepresented the severity of his injury” — much of the thread’s speculation about a cover-up or false reporting is based on assumptions by posters on 5channel, which is worth keeping in mind. Some comments assert with certainty how serious the left knee damage is, but the source article does not list a specific diagnosis. The frequent comparisons to his injury history from his Angels days stem from Ohtani’s track record of pitching restrictions and IL stints in the past; how much of the second half of this season he ends up missing will depend on the results of further examination.
