The story
An official broadcast covering the new Romancing SaGa 3 title revealed several system changes: restrictions on which characters can’t be recruited or which events won’t trigger depending on your chosen protagonist are being removed, Commander Mode is being scrapped, and Combination Arts and Formation Techniques will now trigger for individual characters. On 5ch, threads buzzed with opinions on how the game follows the direction set by the previous title, Revenge of the Seventh Planet, mixed reactions to the character designs, and thoughts on where the series goes from here.
What people said
Even in Sarah's playthrough, she won't leave the party before the final boss fight
Commander Mode is being removed, and as a result Combination Arts and Formation Techniques will now trigger for individual characters
If you don't care, what's driving you to clear two whole hurdles — opening the thread AND posting in it?
*Remaster version
After defeating Algernon, talking to him brings up the options "Give me the reward," "Let me punch you once," and "Never mind."
Give me the reward
It makes you look like you're only in it for the money, but he pays out 10,000 aurum — one of the best single rewards in all of Romancing SaGa 3. However, his line afterward is locked to a smug "I'm the mayor now. Heh."
Let me punch you once
He really doesn't want to get hit — he screams and flees his house — but if you walk back in, he's nonchalantly back in his usual spot. On this route his dialogue reverts to match the original version, and afterward you can no longer threaten him or demand a reward.
Never mind
Nothing changes, and here too you can't make any further demands afterward.
Erasing that much of her character feels a bit much though
Oh right, that too. Picturing a character getting suddenly summoned and rushing over is pretty surreal when you think about it
I wouldn't call it creepy, but I do think the designs look cheap
Fair, but then again, would the Minstrel Song designs really have been the right call either? Not really…
"Tch!!"
Are we not gonna get to hear this line anymore?
The first time she says "No thanks," but if you try to remove it again, she'll apparently let you take it off
Given how Revenge of the Seventh Planet handled it, probably not skippable
Re: #51
Since Combination Arts now trigger for individuals, it'll probably work like in Revenge of the Seventh Planet, where you can use any element except its directly opposing one
He already hit mandatory retirement before Emerald Beyond even released, so he's probably not getting deeply involved anymore
It does get its own slot, but Counter (Mikiri) is capped at 4
Not sure if it'll be a remaster, but Kawazu's been saying for ages now that he wants to bring back Unlimited SaGa
Scarlet Grace actually sold well for a Vita title. The real disaster was the Game Boy remake that flopped on DS
Well, Revenge of the Seventh Planet itself already took the original Romancing SaGa 2 and turned it into a super mainstream RPG where you just beat up enemies to get stronger and push the story forward — and that worked. So it's only natural the company figures 'let's just do that again.'
They said they're removing the restrictions where certain characters can't join or certain events can't trigger depending on your protagonist — like Monica now being able to enter the Zweig Tournament, for example
Apparently those protagonist-dependent recruitment restrictions are being done away with
It's coming to every platform
Switch 1, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox, Steam — you can play it on any of them
If anything, NOT having one would probably get more backlash
It's already shown in the first reveal video
As for the full story, one particular protagonist is tied to the core of the plot, so playing as them gives you the deepest understanding. You can follow it well enough with the others too, though. Beyond that, it's mostly just that each protagonist gets a different epilogue.
Honestly, outside of the general setting, the story itself wasn't all that clear in the original either
Background and Points of Debate
Romancing SaGa 3 was the third entry in the series, originally released in 1995 for the Super Famicom; a remaster followed in 2019, and in 2024 a remake of SaGa 2 arrived as Revenge of the Seventh Planet. This new title continues in that lineage, and where opinions in the thread split was over whether changes like Combination Arts now triggering per-character, Counter (Mikiri) being capped at four slots, and Commander Mode being scrapped push the series further down the mass-market simplification path that Revenge of the Seventh Planet took. The original was defined by its multiple-protagonist structure, where the characters you could recruit and the events that triggered varied depending on your choice of hero — meaning multiple playthroughs were effectively needed to see the full story. This new title, however, signals a policy of removing that very restriction, drawing attention as a change that cuts into one of the series’ core pillars.
