The story
A thread appeared on 5ch’s livestream-commentary board reporting that a streamer who claims to be a “short sleeper” had stayed awake for over 36 hours, sleeping a total of just one hour during that span. The result reportedly followed a declaration of “I won’t sleep on day two” after viewers accused the streamer of dozing off during a treatment the day before. While some in the thread called it “the real deal,” others raised a definitional objection — “isn’t being a short sleeper about needing less sleep per session, not about refusing to sleep at all?” — and pointed to past streaming stunts where people stayed awake for over a week, leaving the thread divided over what would actually count as "proof."
What people said
Yesterday during a head-spa treatment, haters said "you totally dozed off! (for 30 min)" so they declared they wouldn't sleep on day two.
This person's the real deal.
The cosmetic surgeon and YouTubers who doubted them owe an apology.
Doubting them was reasonable, so there's no need for an apology, is there
Even if it's genuine, it's such a rare case you can't really judge it by normal standards.
Apparently the doctor misread "1 hour" as "7 hours."
→ Responded by streaming in a swimsuit in the bath, showing everything
Unstoppable.
A swimsuit stream, for real?
I want to see it.
This person's the real deal.
But that's not being a short sleeper.
They're just refusing to sleep.
That would be a problem for Hori (the streamer, aka Hori Daisuke, referenced later in the thread)
It has to be framed as a skill anyone can pick up.
isn't not sleeping at all just insomnia?
The other guy who did a no-sleep Dragon Quest stream (not Akino) stayed awake for hundreds of hours.
A full week without sleep is way more impressive than short-sleeper Hori Daisuke.
Then again, sleeping just 30 minutes a day, every day, seems impressive in its own way.
Once you fall asleep, you can't wake back up, right?
During his no-sleep trip, Miyakawa Taisei refused to nap too, saying "if I nap, I won't be able to wake up again."
Past that, something starts going wrong lol
There was a foreign streamer who played Zelda nonstop and didn't sleep for a week.
It's just brief lag-related freezes.
It doesn't stop for minutes at a time.

Sorry, but that's just way too obvious.
He was on Hodo Station (a Japanese evening news program) yesterday making fun of Hori.
Huh? They're taking baths, though.
If the whole point of short sleeping is having more waking hours, spending all that time bathing kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?
Apparently they're worried about body odor.
Re: #125
What, like Shizuka-chan? (the famously bath-loving character from Doraemon)
Background and Points of Debate
Medically speaking, “short sleeper” describes a physical trait in which someone experiences little to no impairment despite short individual sleep sessions — it’s technically a different concept from deliberately staying awake. As noted in the thread, it’s well known that the longer sleep deprivation continues, the more cognitive functions like judgment tend to decline, and there have been past streaming stunts built around staying awake for extended stretches that drew attention. Whether this particular case stems from a genuine physical trait or is simply an endurance stunt is hard to determine from the stream alone, and it’s worth noting that the thread never reached a consensus, staying split between those who considered it “proof” and those who argued the definition doesn’t even apply in the first place.
