Kojima Productions announced on September 10 that it is expanding its partnership with Xbox for its new next-generation espionage action title, “PHYSINT.” Following “OD,” which is already being co-developed with Xbox, the new title will also team up with Xbox — effectively marking PlayStation’s withdrawal from the collaborative development setup. On 5channel’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board, users discussed what happens to independent creators when they lose the backing of a major publisher, how Kojima’s work has been received since “Death Stranding,” and how streaming culture is affecting sales of story-driven games.

The thread title's hard to parse

Sony's all like 'sorry, no money to give~'

Re: #3
Huge opportunity for Xbox, but not sure they can actually pull it off lol
4AnonymousSep 10, 2026 15:51
Sony should just get out of the game industry already
Their AAA exclusives are nothing but a nuisance
Nintendo only locks down kids' games as exclusives, so it's fine — I just don't buy those
5AnonymousSep 10, 2026 15:51
Between Naka (likely Yuji Naka) and Nagoshi, it's getting kind of sad
6AnonymousSep 10, 2026 15:52
Microsoft seems quick to change its mind too
Foreign companies cut their losses fast
7AnonymousSep 10, 2026 15:52
Did they lose a big title, or was it more that Sony had already given up on it?

Re: #7
I guess they were counting on the Kojima brand, but Death Stranding undershot expectations and the new game's budget is huge, so maybe they cut it loose early
So their read must be that losing it to a rival won't matter for the next-gen console war a year or two from now
Rough

All that stealth marketing for Death Stranding didn't do much good
15AnonymousSep 10, 2026 15:57
They probably got written off after two Death Stranding games
This one's probably not coming out for another 7 years anyway
How old is Kojima now
16AnonymousSep 10, 2026 15:58
They seemed ready to go all-in supporting it, but then it turned out there'd be no exclusivity window, or a really short one, and Kojima wanted it on Xbox and PC from the start — maybe that's why they pulled out
With Xbox it can reach PC without even needing Steam
17AnonymousSep 10, 2026 15:59
Nobody's buying an Xbox just for this
Well, I guess it'll end up on Steam anyway, but the real problem is Kojima's games are still just 'look, I'm buddies with Hollywood actors' self-promotion with no substance behind it

Announced back in 2024 and the release date's looking like 2030 or later
Still haven't shown a single second of actual gameplay
Wouldn't be surprising if the project got scrapped
Well, good thing Xbox picked it up
24AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:03
Playing Death Stranding makes it clear Kojima's recent work isn't really something you can root for
Personally I don't hate the gameplay itself — I actually kind of like it
But the new game is supposed to be this fusion of games and movies, and that sounds like the same direction as Death Stranding — that's a bad sign
25AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:03
I never understood what was supposed to be fun about Death Stranding
26AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:04
This is what happens when you're not fully bankrolled to just keep tinkering forever like Nagoshi
His social media's all just photos with celebrities and bragging about shopping
27AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:05
Whatever happened to that game where you just run around in circles in the same spot?
Did it ever come out?
28AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:05
It's basically running on fumes at this point
Can't expect much
29AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:05
Games won't sell unless streaming stops
People who feel satisfied just watching a playthrough are killing sales
Development costs a fortune and streamers spoil the story — story-driven games are doomed
Stuff like racing, shooters, or puzzle games, sure, stream those

Re: #29
It's already too late
Everyone's realized the easiest, most enjoyable way to 'play' now is watching a video at 2x speed and skipping through it
31AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:06
The only info we've got is that Minami Hamabe is in it — what happens if something goes wrong partway through production?
45AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:13
Not Kojima, but I wish someone would publish that Chinese-yakuza game the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) staff were making — looked interesting
59AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:23
Re: #45
If that's Gang of Dragon, that's five years in with zero output
They've probably only got assets and nothing else
66AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:28
Basically, creators are only as good as the company backing them — same with that guy who left Sega, and the one who left Square Enix to start something new and couldn't get anywhere with it either
79AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:34
Re: #66
Sounds just like a salaryman craftsman who never realizes he could only do business because of the shop's name behind him, then goes independent thinking 'I can make it anywhere on my own skill' — and flames out
69AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:29
Even From Software says Nintendo treats them better than Sony does, so Sony really must be something else
80AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:34
Re: #69
Guess they don't know what kind of support went into making Death Stranding
82AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:35
Give a quirky, strong-willed creator too comfortable an environment and they immediately get lazy
102AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:45
Re: #82
It's less that they get lazy and more that they get even more motivated — except they pour all that energy into details nobody else cares about
Like 'I want to add this too, I want to redo that too,' and it just pushes completion further away
85AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:37
Things might've turned out differently if they'd managed to ship OD
87AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:39
Re: #85
OD is also being developed together with Microsoft though
90AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:41
Honestly, I think making a game you can whip up and play quickly is more impressive than these games that eat up tons of money and time
96AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:43
Come to think of it, Nagoshi also got dropped by his Chinese investors — development costs ran too high
100AnonymousSep 10, 2026 16:45
Re: #96
What kind of game was Nagoshi trying to make?

Background and key points of this discussion

“PHYSINT” is billed as a “fusion of games and movies,” and as post #22 notes, quite a while has passed since its announcement with no concrete footage revealed yet. This latest announcement formalizes Xbox’s involvement in this new title too, following “OD,” which is already being co-developed with Xbox — meaning PlayStation has stepped back from what had been an exclusive collaborative arrangement. It’s easy to misread this as Sony titles disappearing altogether, which isn’t the case here. On the thread, citing examples like Yuji Naka and Like a Dragon (Yakuza) studio figure Toshihiro Nagoshi, users debated the view that even accomplished creators tend to stall out once they lose the backing of a major publisher, alongside a sharp split in opinion over “Death Stranding.” There was also broader discussion of an industry-wide issue: story-driven games being “consumed” via let’s-plays and streams in a way that doesn’t translate into sales.
