iPhone 18 Price Shocks Fans: 5ch Reacts, ‘That’s Gaming-PC Money’

The story

A thread titled “Are you guys buying the iPhone 18?” went up on 5ch’s “Morning Coffee” board, and it quickly filled with reactions to the pricing of the iPhone 18 lineup and the rumored foldable “iPhone Duo.” Posters piled on about the jump from 256GB to 512GB alone tacking on 35,000 yen, and about the top model costing as much as three of the cheapest iPhones combined. Opinions split between “too expensive to touch” and “still want one anyway.” The thread also touched on whether removable-battery phones might make a comeback, given the EU’s upcoming battery-replacement mandate.

Buying it?
8AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:04
That's gaming-PC money though…
10AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:05
Only buying the Ultra 4 — well, already did.
11AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:05
Don't need a gaming PC though.
13AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:07
That's three months of my salary…
14AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:07
Bought the vanilla 17 on release day last year.
I upgrade every year, but I don't need a Pro, so I'll probably sit this one out.
23AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:29
Re: #14
And it's had two price hikes since then.
15AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:11
I'm buying the foldable.
Gonna line up at the Apple Store and high-five the Black employee.
16AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:11
Wild that everyone was calling it the "iPhone Fold" until yesterday, and the name "Duo" didn't leak until the announcement.
21AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:17
The cheapest iPhone runs 120,000 yen, so if you think of this as three of those, it's actually cheap.
22AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:18
Guess they skipped it because the thin 17 flopped hard lol
27AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:49
Re: #22
Wasn't that just a testbed for foldable design elements?
24AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:29
I ran my PowerBook Duo into the ground back in the day.
Even folded up, this looks kind of awkward — doesn't seem like it'll sit well in a pocket.
25AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:31
The Duo's size before you even open it is kind of awkward.
28AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:03
Never mind the iPhone Duo, the vanilla 18 is expected next spring.
There's not much spec difference anyway, so I'm planning to buy the 17 once it drops in price.
38AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:28
Re: #28
The 17 got a price hike though.
29AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:05
The iPhone 16 is good enough for me.
I want to switch over from Android.
30AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:06
I'd want one if it could install 2 profiles.
32AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:09
The 16 and 17 aren't that different in price, so
if I'm buying, might as well go with the 17.

Bumping 256GB up to 512GB adding 35,000 yen is way too steep.
37AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:28
Whatever happened to "the iPhone is the one thing that won't get a price hike"?
39AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:30
I only use my phone in ways where 128GB is plenty, so I've got zero complaints with the vanilla iPhone 13 128GB I bought outright for 1 yen (a common carrier promo price in Japan).
40AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:31
Removable-battery phones will probably start making a comeback next year.
41AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:35
Early Android phones let you swap batteries just like flip phones, so I used to carry a spare.
You could get compatible batteries from places like ROWA for about 1,000 yen.
51AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:51
So you're gonna power off, swap the battery every time, and then charge that spent battery every day once you're home?
People who leave a power bank plugged in all the time are lazy to begin with — they can't handle that kind of charging routine.
65AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:37
Re: #51
Just charge it with a power bank like usual.
The EU mandate just means that once your phone's battery degrades, you can buy a replacement battery yourself and swap it in.
58AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:14
I've got the 15 Pro, but between playing too much Pokémon GO and taking too many photos, battery capacity has dropped into the 60% range, so I've got no choice but to upgrade.

Going with the 18 Pro 512GB.
60AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:18
Re: #58
If battery degradation is the only issue for an iPhone user, you'd be better off just getting the battery replaced.
66AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:43
If the iPhone goes removable-battery, Apple will probably charge a rip-off price even for just the battery alone…
72AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:48
Re: #66
Once it's a battery pack, other makers will put out compatible ones, so it's not an issue.
Even now you can get compatible batteries for about 2,000 yen, so swapping it yourself keeps costs down.
That said, trade-ins and buybacks will likely refuse it, so it's more for people who plan to run the phone into the ground rather than resell it.
68AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:46
You guys are supposedly chasing idols around the country and stacking up CDs for events (buying multiples for lottery/handshake tickets, a common idol-fan practice) — where's the money for an expensive phone even coming from?
69AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:47
Re: #68
They scalp good-seat tickets at high prices and rake in a solid profit.
75AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:50
Re: #68
Installments, obviously.
71AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:48
350,000 yen when all I use it for is calls, LINE, and browsing the web…
76AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:50
Re: #71
People like that should just keep using their current phone, swapping the battery, until it drops off the iOS update list.
Or just accept it and cycle through cheap Androids ('doro,' Japanese phone slang for Android) every few years.
77AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:51
At this size, it might not even fit in a dress-shirt pocket.
80AnonymousSep 10, 2026 08:56
Re: #77
Even without this size, I wouldn't put it in a dress-shirt pocket — it sags and looks sloppy.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

iPhone pricing in Japan has kept climbing in recent years against the backdrop of a weak yen, and the thread includes comments noting that “there have already been two price hikes since the 17.” The claim that bumping storage up just one tier adds 35,000 yen reflects a real sense that the higher up the lineup you go, the steeper the increases get. Under an EU battery regulation that took effect in 2023, mobile devices are required to be designed so users can replace the battery themselves, with the mandate expected to fully kick in around 2027. The thread’s prediction that “removable-battery phones will become more common” seems to be riding on this trend, though posters couldn’t confirm when or with which model Apple might comply. The foldable’s name, “Duo,” also evoked the 1990s laptop the “PowerBook Duo” for posters old enough to remember classic Apple gear.
