Teflon Frying Pan Wears Out in Just Six Months — 5ch Says “Just Accept It’s Disposable”

The story

Furious that his Teflon frying pan had degraded after only about six months, a thread starter vented his frustration in a thread on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (a real-time chat board). Fellow posters piled on with comments like “Tefal pans are the same” and “It’s your own fault for using high heat,” but the OP wouldn’t back down, insisting his anger was justified because “my roommate won’t stop using high heat.” Even after being told to just accept it as a consumable item, he never really cooled off.

Buy a new one, buy a new one, and it still doesn't even last six months. This is such crap. Just die.
3AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:21
This is such garbage, it pisses me off. When are they ever gonna improve this stuff?
4AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:21
Just buy a Tefal.
7AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:22
Re: #4
Tefal doesn't even last six months either. Garbage.
53AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:36
Re: #4
Tefal is straight-up garbage, for real.
5AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:22
It's useless and it's pissing me off so much I can't even sleep.
20AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:26
When's that useless DuPont finally gonna go under?
25AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:28
It can't handle heat, so no high flame.
And don't shock it with cold water either.
Just accept it as a consumable.
28AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:28
Re: #25
Doesn't even last six months. Garbage. Useless.
42AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:32
Re: #38
Because the last few years, they haven't even been lasting six months.
55AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:37
Re: #42
Then you could just be mad about it tomorrow instead.
No reason it has to be today, right?
44AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:32
Well obviously they can't make something that never wears out, or it'd stop selling — duh.
By the way, they already figured out how to cure cancer ages ago too, but they're sitting on it because it'd tank the economy — all the countries agreed to it at the "Reverie" (a joking nod to the secret world summit from One Piece).

Re: #44
Shut up, quit price-gouging. Make it last for years no matter how carelessly I use it. Garbage.
51AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:36
Re: #48
I've been using mine for like 3 years and nothing sticks.
54AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:37
Re: #51
My Teflon pan doesn't even last six months! It's got no spirit! It's garbage! It's useless! I wish it would just disappear!
56AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:38
Re: #55
I'm furious every single day!!! I punch the pan, I yell at it, and it still won't give me any effort!!!!
68AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:45
Re: #56
Then just save it for tomorrow, will ya.
62AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:41
Teflon coating peeling off in six months? What are you cooking, rocks?
63AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:41
Re: #62
Quitting high heat is simply unavoidable.
64AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:42
I was shocked to find the manual literally says you can't use high heat on an IH (induction) stove.
67AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:44
Re: #64
Who cares about that, they should just make it so it's fine either way! Let's all mass-complain to the manufacturer until they fix it! Come on, email them right now! Reply to them on social media!
66AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:44
If you actually read the manual or the info floating around online and use it properly, it'll probably last at least a bit longer.
70AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:45
Re: #66
My roommate won't use it properly so that's a no-go, which means I have to make a big scene online to pressure the manufacturer into fixing it.
71AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:46
Re: #68
I want my social media account back. I just replied with my opinion to Tefal's official account — don't suspend me for that.
73AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:47
Re: #71
Why not just stop using it?
A cast-iron pan would do fine.
75AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:48
It peels because it's got a coating in the first place.
If there was no coating to begin with, there'd be nothing to peel.
78AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:50
Re: #75
But knowing this guy, he'd probably scrub a cast-iron pan with dish soap too.
81AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:50
Re: #78
My roommate's a bit of a neat freak and scrubs everything with dish soap until it's not sticky at all, no matter what it is.
96AnonymousAug 23, 2026 20:03
Re: #78
That's fine, though.
Restaurants do that as a matter of course.
76AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:49
Re: #31
Even on IH you can use medium heat, can't you?
80AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:50
Re: #76
My roommate uses high heat. Telling them doesn't make them stop. I just want Teflon pans to be improved.
88AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:56
If it lasts six months, that's actually pretty good.
90AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:57
Re: #88
What a waste of metal, replacing it every six months.
91AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:57
OP, your anger's cooling off already.
Guess that's about as far as it went, huh.
94AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:59
Re: #91
I just figured there's no point repeating myself — doesn't mean I've actually calmed down.
99AnonymousAug 23, 2026 20:09
Feels like it goes bad fast if you use high heat.
Well, just think of it as a consumable, I guess.
101AnonymousAug 23, 2026 20:09
Re: #99
Replacing it every six months is pointless anyway, so I just keep using it while seething.

Background and Key Points

Teflon and other PTFE non-stick coatings are inherently sacrificial: the slick surface is a thin polymer layer bonded to the pan’s base metal, and every use — especially at high heat — degrades it by microscopic amounts until food starts sticking, typically after months rather than years. Manufacturer manuals, including for budget lines and premium brands like Tefal (the French cookware maker sold in Japan), generally cap recommended stovetop temperatures and specifically warn against high heat on induction (IH) ranges, which can exceed the coating’s tolerance faster than gas ever could. In Japan, IH stoves are extremely common in apartments and rented housing, which makes this a live issue for many households, not a niche complaint.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t “does Teflon wear out” — everyone agreed it does — but whether that’s a legitimate consumer grievance or a user-error problem. One camp treated six-month failure as an industry-wide defect worth mass-emailing manufacturers over; the other insisted the OP’s household, specifically a roommate who won’t stop using high heat, was the actual cause, and that any pan would suffer under those conditions.

What outsiders likely miss is that this isn’t really about Teflon’s quality at all — it’s a roommate-dynamics story wearing a product-complaint costume. The OP’s own posts reveal he can’t get the person actually damaging the pan to change behavior, so the anger gets redirected at the manufacturer instead. No one in the thread mentions the obvious fix posters gestured at only briefly: cast iron or carbon steel pans have no coating to lose, making them immune to exactly this failure mode, at the cost of needing seasoning and different care.
