Record Rainfall Slams Nagoya: Rivers Overflow, Underground Parking Shut Down as Phone Alerts Won’t Stop Blaring

The story

On the evening of September 8, 2026, smartphones across Nagoya City wouldn’t stop blaring heavy rain and evacuation alerts. Water levels rose on multiple rivers, including the Shonai and Ueda rivers, forcing the closure of part of the Tsurumai subway line and the underground parking lot at Ozone on National Route 19 as a flood-prevention measure. A live-discussion thread on 5channel filled up with photos and videos of rivers and roads, along with a steady stream of reports from people struggling to get home or evacuate. The situation sparked wide discussion, with some pointing out that rainfall had exceeded expectations and others drawing comparisons to the catastrophic 2000 Tokai flood.

Might want to stop using black for that, honestly

(In disaster triage, a black tag means the person isn't breathing — beyond saving)

Seriously?
That area's put serious effort into flood control, but this might be too much

If that's true, Nagoya Dome and the cars parked at Iwase are gonna go underwater again

Feels like nothing but flooding lately — is flood-control tech just getting worse?
Infrastructure's falling apart

Re: #116
It's the sheer intensity of the rain in short bursts

Re: #116
Japan's flood-control measures are basically designed for around 50mm of rain per hour
Chiba and Nagoya are seeing 70-80mm, and in some spots 100mm — no wonder it can't keep up

It's the highest rainfall on record

Depends on where you are, really

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Much of Japan’s flood-control infrastructure was built to handle around 50mm of rainfall per hour, so a localized downpour reaching 70-100mm, as seen here, easily exceeds that capacity. The thread gathered concrete details on the flooding of the Shonai and Ueda rivers and the closures of underground parking lots and subway lines, but opinions split between those who blamed “deteriorating flood-control technology” and those who argued the rainfall simply hit a record high. Comparisons to the 2000 Tokai flood also came up, but whether the actual rainfall this time exceeded that event remains hearsay within the posts — confirmation from an official source like the Japan Meteorological Agency isn’t available from the thread itself.
