Pushback on “The Only Decent Android Is Galaxy” — 5ch Divided Over Which Phone Reigns Supreme

From our other sites

The story

A thread on 5ch’s “Live Anything G” board (a general live-commentary board where users post in real time about whatever’s in the news) kicked off over how to pick an Android phone. It started with a post claiming “the only decent Android is Galaxy,” with posters recommending the Fold8 and the mid-range Galaxy A57, while Xperia kept taking hits over camera quality and Pixel got dragged for its past battery-fire issues and weak sales overseas. The conversation eventually spilled into iPhone-vs-Android territory too, splitting the room over OS usability and value for money.

Can't be helped.

Xperia gets mocked, but I think its barely-there AI photo processing will get the appreciation it deserves someday.
5AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:39
Re: #4
Xperia's blown-out highlights are brutal though…
it's terrible with night shots and backlighting.
74AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:27
Re: #4
Xperia's camera comes in dead last
every single time in flagship camera comparisons.
It's been the clear worst for like 10 years straight,
it's basically trash at this point.
11AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:45
Give me some mid-range recommendations.
I'm on a Pixel right now.
18AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:48
Re: #11
Galaxy, obviously.
Get the Fold8.
25AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:53
Re: #11
I hear the Galaxy A57 is pretty solid.
76AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:28
Re: #11
M-m-m…
MID-RANGE lmaooooooo
it's the MIDDLE and yet the END lmaoooooo
12AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:46
Is Pixel done for too now?
14AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:47
Re: #12
Pixel's just expensive for nothing these days.
Plus the 6a caught fire.
77AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:28
Re: #12
It's only ever sold in Japan anyway.
20AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:50
Why can't Japanese makers build a phone that's easier for Japanese users than Galaxy?
Not talking spec sheets, I mean the fine details of the UI.

Re: #20
Nobody anywhere in the world can pull that off.

Re: #20
Japanese companies can't build software.
They're great at hardware though.
23AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:51
Re: #18
I'm curious about the Fold, but for that price
wouldn't the S series make more sense?
I get that the big multi-panel display drives up cost,
but the rest of the specs just don't justify the price.
26AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:53
Re: #23
Foldables have brutal repair costs.
28AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:53
Re: #23
Well, it's only a dual-lens setup.
But dual-lens is the norm now anyway —
saw an article somewhere saying only about 20% of people
actually use the telephoto lens properly.
29AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:54
I'm tech-illiterate, sticking with my Oppo.
31AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:54
Re: #29
Not bad as a mid-ranger.
32AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:54
Re: #29
Oppo's really faded into the background lately.
47AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:03
Why not just get an iPhone?
56AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:10
Re: #47
I went from an SE3 to a 17e as my secondary phone,
but iOS is honestly too garbage to live with.
57AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:12
Re: #56
You'd have to really want to throw away 100,000 yen
[~$700] to buy an 🍎 in the first place.
58AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:13
Re: #57
Might as well buy a toy you can't even use.
78AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:30
Re: #57
Re: #58
That's just you not knowing how to use it.
65AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:19
You guys only use it for gaming anyway, so who cares which one?
66AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:19
Re: #65
Opposite, actually — I don't game at all.
68AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:20
Re: #65
Isn't the gaming crowd exactly the pickiest about this stuff?
79AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:33
The Sense10 is good.
A bit pricey for its specs, though.
80AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:34
Re: #79
"Pricey for its specs" — so zero selling points, lol.
81AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:35
Re: #79
It's good for a "mid-ranger" lol, right?
Feels like a lot of people who'd be perfectly happy with this
end up buying an iPhone instead.
82AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:36
Galaxy isn't just "decent," it's flat-out the strongest there is.

For people who don't game, Pixel is basically a better iPhone.
That's why the iPhone crowd has been piling on Pixel so hard lately.
86AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:42
Re: #82
Pixel's garbage that doesn't even sell worldwide.
How is that "better" anything?
87AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:42
Re: #82
Have you actually used a Pixel?
It's so heavy I'd never touch one again.
83AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:39
Xperia is still the best for music and video, honestly.
Sure, it's got problems elsewhere,
but it gets way more hate than it deserves.
89AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:45
Re: #83
You say "great for music," but in the era of wireless earbuds,
it doesn't matter how good Xperia's own hardware is.
And if you're streaming on Spotify or whatever,
the source audio is the real bottleneck anyway.
Bottom line, Xperia's just for audio nerds now.
95AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:47
Re: #83
It's so expensive I honestly can't decide what to get next.

Re: #86
In the US it's not just resale value — there are actual discounts,
so it ends up cheaper than in Japan.
By the way, plenty of people in the US call out
the iPhone's weak performance too, lol.
99AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:48
Re: #93
Performance hasn't really been weak since around the iPhone 13.
The price, though…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Pixel 6a battery-fire issue raised in the thread isn’t just idle mudslinging — it’s a documented problem that Google addressed in 2024 with an actual battery replacement/warranty program. Xperia, meanwhile, takes a beating over camera quality in the thread, but it still has a loyal following for its music and video playback, making it a phone whose reputation really hinges on how you use it. The thread’s tension boils down to two recurring fault lines — “performance vs. usability” and “built for Japan vs. built for the world” — so there’s no simple ranking that settles it. The device signatures visible in some posts, left by 2chMate (a popular third-party 5ch browser that auto-tags posts with the poster’s phone model), suggest actual Galaxy and Xperia owners were weighing in themselves, not just spectators.
