The story
On the night of September 4, in a shopping street in Taishi 1-chome, Nishinari Ward, Osaka City, two foreign nationals noticed three men were following them. When they asked “why are you following us,” they were sprayed with tear gas and had money demanded from them in an attempted robbery. The men escaped into an open pachinko parlor, and the three suspects remain at large. Since the victims couldn’t speak Japanese, police used a translation app to communicate with them, and that’s how it was determined the men had been demanding money — a detail that caught fire on 5ch. The thread split between posters voicing their sense of Nishinari’s bad reputation and locals pushing back that it’s overblown.

What people said
The attackers might be foreigners too.
Hopefully this spreads around the world so everyone knows Osaka is insanely scary, and foreigners just stop coming here.
Decent Japanese people will stop going near it too — it'll turn into a slum where only criminals gather.
lol the translation app part gets me
it's doing its best for our country.
Japanese people don't have the guts for that.
At this point whether you get robbed in Japan is basically down to luck.
No, Osaka is in a league of its own on this.
the same Nishinari rated more dangerous than Johannesburg?
I live in Osaka, and Nishinari doesn't really have that kind of rough energy anymore these days.
>The victims were foreign nationals, and after checking with a translation app, the men are believed to have been demanding money.
That's literally what it says though.
Are you out of your mind?
What kind of image is that lol
Outside of Airin (the day-laborer district within Nishinari), you could let your daughter walk around alone at night.
Not many people realize this, but it's right next to Tezukayama — just walk down the slope and you're already in Nishinari.
People from outside Osaka might not immediately place the name Tezukayama, but locally it's known as an upscale residential area.
That's because of the Uemachi Fault escarpment — walk down that slope and the whole atmosphere flips completely.
I get why people from other prefectures picture the area south of Shin-Imamiya Station or around Haginochaya Station when they hear "Nishinari."
By the way, that area's commonly known as Kamagasaki.
Foreigners seem to carry around a lot of cash, so they'd make an easy target.
Apparently he was carrying 6 million yen.
Yep, that's all you need to know.

The pachinko parlor was just where the victims happened to flee to.
Background and Talking Points
Nishinari Ward, formerly known as Kamagasaki, is known as a day-laborer district and public safety concerns there come up often, but an image circulating in the thread claiming to show “Osaka Prefecture Crime Trends 2025” was an unsourced, unverified statistical claim, so it wasn’t used in this article. In fact, comments about the area’s perceived safety split between those saying “this kind of thing is happening all over Japan” and those insisting “Osaka’s Nishinari is uniquely bad,” with neither side offering objective backing. It’s also worth noting that the victims couldn’t speak Japanese and had to communicate via translation app — a real, practical hurdle facing foreign residents and visitors who become crime victims, one that’s easy for Japanese speakers to overlook. And Nishinari Ward is separated from upscale residential areas like Tezukayama by nothing more than a slope, so painting the whole area with one “danger zone” brush can be misleading.
