From our other sites

The story

In the J.League Urawa vs. Nagasaki match (October 25, Saitama Stadium), a bizarre incident unfolded just before halftime when Nagasaki midfielder Sho Onaga opened a bag of towels at the edge of the pitch and was stung by a hornet. Onaga crouched over in pain, but the first half ended as scheduled, and he went on to play the entire match without being substituted. On 5ch, the discussion spread from debating “whose equipment was to blame” to personal horror stories about hornet and centipede stings, and even comparisons of annual death tolls from bears versus hornets.

So how's Avispa Fukuoka gonna take responsibility for this? (Avispa's club name literally means "wasp" in Spanish — that's the joke)

Re: #10
Apparently they don't feel any responsibility at all.
16AnonymousOct 25, 2026 18:44
The towel was probably hung out to dry, a hornet landed on it without anyone noticing, and it just got folded up with it inside.
That hornet came all the way from Nagasaki.

Re: #16
Same thing happened to me with pants I'd hung out to dry — a hornet was hiding inside and I put them on without knowing. It was brutal.

Re: #16
Not a hornet, but I once grabbed a towel with a centipede stuck to it without realizing.
The pain was so sharp I thought I'd grabbed a shard of glass.

Re: #16
Phew, good. Urawa almost got blamed for this one.
17AnonymousOct 25, 2026 18:44
I've actually never once been stung by a hornet.
Paper wasps, though — that's happened to me twice.

Apparently hornets are at their most aggressive around this time of year.

You'd think summer, but it's actually late autumn.

2025 bear-attack deaths: 13
2025 hornet-sting deaths: 16

Yeah, hornets are scarier, no contest.

Re: #33
Let's split the difference and go exterminate some kumanbachi instead (the name literally contains "kuma," meaning bear).
85AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:36
Re: #33
Pit vipers kill an average of 5-6 people a year.
Still, a 0.8% fatality rate isn't something to laugh off.
45AnonymousOct 25, 2026 18:58
Apparently with hornets, only the females sting.
The quick way to check if one's male or female is to just grab it bare-handed — if it doesn't sting you, it's a male, supposedly.
Some YouTuber actually tried this. No way in hell I'm doing that myself lol
53AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:01
Re: #45
You basically never run into male hornets out in the wild anyway.

Re: #38
If you get bitten by a centipede, run the hottest water you can stand from the shower straight onto the bite and keep it there — it breaks down the enzymes and the pain eases up.

Oh really, I'll try that next time. Thanks.

Not the person you replied to, but I didn't know that either.
Thanks.

Re: #34
I heard kumanbachi are just an oversized version of honeybees — harmless to people and pets, and actually kind of cute.
59AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:03
Re: #55
Kumanbachi is just another name for the hornet — it's different from kumabachi (the carpenter bee).
62AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:04
People assume hornets are dangerous but paper wasps are fine — that's a misconception though.
Paper wasps are literally in the hornet family (Vespidae), subfamily Polistinae.
Get stung by one enough times in a row and you can genuinely develop anaphylaxis.
And once that happens, you're stuck dealing with it for the rest of your life.

Re: #62
Never been stung by a paper wasp before —
until I took too long tearing down a nest and got nailed.
135AnonymousOct 25, 2026 21:40
Re: #62
I've actually been stung by paper wasps three separate times lol
Guess the stings were spaced out enough, or I just never developed an allergic reaction.
75AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:21
Are there hornets in cities too?
91AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:40
Re: #75
Oh yeah, plenty. Some of them build pretty sizable nests.
84AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:34
Got stung by a honeybee about three times — a stinger almost half the size of my body came out, and it hurt like hell.
Hornets must be on a whole other level.
86AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:36
Re: #84
Honeybees die after they sting, so they won't do it unless you really provoke them.
What on earth did you do to it?
89AnonymousOct 25, 2026 19:38
Honeybees, though, you're fine with.

Didn't know that. I always figured kumanbachi was the same as kumabachi (carpenter bee).
So kumanbachi = hornet all along, huh.

Yeah — got kicked in the stomach and his organs ruptured.
142AnonymousOct 25, 2026 23:20
We almost had a nest built at our place this year too — it was rough.
Managed with just two or three cans of wasp spray, but calling in professional exterminators gets pricey.
If you live in a house, start keeping an eye out once you get past June.

Re: #142
Wasp spray's expensive, so I tried regular bug spray instead — turned out to be brutally effective.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Hornets are known to become most aggressive in autumn, and this incident occurred during a match in late October. Opinions on the thread split between “it must have been mixed in with Urawa’s equipment” and “the towel that caused it belonged to Nagasaki,” and based on the original article alone, it’s impossible to say for certain which side’s management was at fault. The point raised that “more people die from hornets than bears” is also a real and fairly well-known statistical trend — since bear-attack coverage tends to dominate the news, it often comes as a surprise that hornets actually claim more lives annually. As for Onaga going on to play the full match afterward, it’s presumably because first-aid treatment brought the symptoms under control, though neither the original article nor the thread specifies the medical details.
