Starting Kubo is going to make this a disaster.
It's turning into a sloppy mess and nothing's going in.
Just stop playing Kubo already.

Re: #4
Yeah, that was exactly the kind of play you'd expect from a guy who's fallen out of favor at Sociedad — that's Kubo for you.

Re: #4
Today's Kubo highlight reel: sitting on the ground appealing for a foul while the pass meant for him got flagged offside.

Re: #4
Whenever Kubo's out there he wants to hog the ball and it just kills the attacking tempo.

Ao Tanaka's a regular starter for a top Premier League club, picked up Man of the Match, and has been racking up goals and assists in back-to-back games — he's on a completely different level.

Re: #5
Tanaka's line-splitting through balls were ridiculous, gave me chills. His defending was solid too.

Re: #5
Tanaka was just in a different class out there. Makes sense — he's been running the show in the Premier League.

Re: #5
Good thing they subbed him off before he could get lumped in with the guys who lost us the game.
18AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:22
Ao Tanaka was insanely good — great on both ends of the pitch.
23AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:22
Tanaka's giveaways were so bad and so frequent I actually laughed.

Zion Suzuki is amazing. Proud to share the name.

Re: #26
'Sin-Grudge'?! You mean it's really 'Sin-Grudge'?! (a joking kanji spelling of "Zion" — the characters used literally mean "sin" and "grudge" but can be read to sound like his name)

Re: #26
Isn't he the kid who was at the training camp during the World Cup?

Re: #26
Zion-chan is definitely cute 👱🏻‍♀

Honestly Ueda struggled too, and I think Tanimura did well against Ecuador's defense. He clearly did more than the Goto-Maeda front line.

Re: #65
Yeah, exactly. I thought the same thing.
68AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:25
That was a really fun match. Well, some of that's just relief after yesterday's stress.
116AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:27
Re: #68
At least yesterday's game had a goal in it, so that one was better.
73AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:25
Korea wins by a landslide and we're struggling like this. We'll never win the World Cup, and even taking Asia looks shaky at this point. Schedule some away games for once.
110AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:26
Re: #73
Ecuador left out two of their key players (in that other match) — but they brought them out for the Japan game.
76AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:25
So why can't we ever win at the World Cup or the Olympics?
145AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:28
Re: #76
Come on, go easy lol
173AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:30
Re: #76
Because we burn ourselves out in the group stage without thinking about the knockout rounds.
102AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:26
Ecuador's defense was tough — even Ueda looked off. If Araújo and Bentancur hadn't been subbed off in the Uruguay match, Shiogai and Ueda probably wouldn't have done anything either, and we'd have ended up with a draw like this one too. Also, Maeda's definitely gotten slower since his hair grew back.

Re: #102
Yeah, the extra hair added weight.
106AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:26
We're starting to look even with South America.
138AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:28
Re: #106
If we're even with South America and dominating Europe, why can't we win a single knockout match?
157AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:29
To sum up:

Korea > Ecuador > Japan

Which means…

Re: #157
Japan 3-1, Uruguay 4-1 Korea.

Re: #157
Uh, Japan won though.
160AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:29
When did Seko get this good?
172AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:30
Re: #160
Somehow Seko's starting to look handsome to me.

Theory: he collided with Tomiyasu and they swapped bodies.

Background and talking points

This match wasn’t part of the World Cup proper but a friendly tournament, the Kirin Cup, so it has no direct bearing on rankings or qualification. Even so, it made news for Moriyasu’s Japan winning a penalty shootout for the first time since the 2022 Qatar World Cup. FIFA rankings have Japan at 17th and Ecuador at 25th. Opinion in the thread was split over Takefusa Kubo, with harsh comments piling up that echoed his limited playing time at Real Sociedad, while Ao Tanaka, who’s been delivering results in the Premier League, drew widespread praise. Some posts compared the team to the South Korean national team, but that’s more of a separate flame-war context than commentary on the match itself, and any posts containing discriminatory language have been excluded from this article. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki’s performance was received favorably.
