The story
After Morning Musume。’25 member Rio Sakurai remarked that “seeing moon-viewing cream puffs reminds me of the rough patch we went through last fall,” a thread sprang up on the Hello! Project board to look back at what exactly happened during that period. Posters pointed out that at the time, the fall tour overlapped with Rock in Japan and the Shanghai show dates, and on top of that, Rio Kitagawa had her activities restricted over “that incident,” while Rena Yokoyama’s ability to perform stayed up in the air until the last minute due to poor health. The thread was split over which factor was really at the core of the “rough patch.”
What people said
Okamura → sweet potatoes
Sakurai → moon-viewing (cream puffs)
Oh wow, that looks tasty

the Wendy's logo really is a dead ringer for Ikue Sakakibara (lol)
That'd end up being aimed at Makino, not Kitagawa
Yokoyama was in and out due to poor health, with nobody sure if she'd perform until the last minute
and Kitagawa, who also doted on her, ended up in that whole mess
of course she'd end up worn down
I wanted to see Riorio brush off the flaming and the insults and shut everyone up with a killer performance
Maybe that girl's strategy of not even giving her the chance was the right call after all
If there'd been plenty of senior members still thriving after graduation, maybe she wouldn't have gone job-hunting at all, but…
Background and Talking Points on This Topic
During this stretch, Morning Musume。 was carrying a double dose of instability: Rio Kitagawa had her activities restricted following a scandal, while whether Rena Yokoyama could perform stayed unclear right up to the last minute due to health concerns. On top of that, the fall tour overlapped with Rock in Japan and the Shanghai show, reportedly making things physically punishing on the ground as well. In the thread, voices pinning all the chaos on Kitagawa’s absence clashed with those writing it off as her being “selfish,” though there’s also word that Kitagawa herself intended to perform but wasn’t able to join rehearsals — meaning it can’t be boiled down to a simple cause and effect. Speculation also surfaced that Marii Makino’s absence was a “boycott,” but other threads have already confirmed it was due to poor health. Sakurai herself only ever said it was a “rough patch” without naming any specific events, so whether the thread’s guesses actually match what she meant remains unclear.
