The story
Dentsu has published the results of a survey on the FIFA World Cup 2026 (held June–July 2026), surveying 3,000 people aged 15–69. Interest in the Japan national team rose from 32.0% at the time of the AFC final qualifiers to 41.9% by the Brazil match, and television broadcast was the most common viewing method at 53.1%. On 5ch, this sparked a wave of comparisons between soccer and the WBC (baseball) over viewership and popularity, along with comments pointing out the survey’s small sample size and complaints about broadcast conditions.
On the 17th, Dentsu released the results of its “FIFA World Cup 2026 Comprehensive Tournament Survey,” which collected responses from 3,000 people nationwide aged 15–69 regarding the FIFA World Cup 2026, held in June–July 2026.
The survey analyzed interest in the Japan national team, actual viewing habits, satisfaction with the viewing/spectating experience, and evaluations of sponsor companies, revealing that television broadcasts and streaming each supported tournament viewership in different ways.
On interest levels, 32.0% said they were “interested” back at the stage of the AFC final qualifiers, when Japan secured its spot. Interest then climbed following the squad announcement, reaching 38.3% for Japan’s opening match against the Netherlands, and continued rising through the Tunisia and Sweden matches, peaking at 41.9% for the Brazil match — the highest of the 10 points measured in the survey.

What people said
That's just what baseball media always does, led by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation lol
You're at the level where you need to relearn statistics from scratch.
It's meaningless unless the sample is randomized.
Dentsu's survey is riddled with bias.
That's just what baseball media always does, led by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation lol
That's got nothing to do with statistics or randomization.
"Riddled with bias" is just your imagination.
You go ahead and provide a source for that bias.
Young people watch the soccer World Cup.

The exodus from baseball just keeps accelerating.
The World Cup produced a result of its own too — DAZN's scam-like dark patterns.
The WBC's young viewership actually grew quite a bit.
– Commercials during hydration breaks
– Corporate logos plastered all over the screen
– Yasuda's commentary for Japan's matches, plus multiple commentators
– The kickoff countdown
That live performance extending halftime for the final wasn't needed. Without that production, I bet they could've cut sponsors' costs.
The baseball nerds' WBC is Mt. Takao. ("yakibuta," derisive slang for baseball fans)
Honestly, Mt. Koya is more familiar and popular with Japanese people.
It's not Mt. Takao, it's Mt. Tenpouzan.
Don't get it wrong. (Tenpouzan, in Osaka, is one of Japan's shortest "mountains" at just a few meters tall)
Women actually watch baseball more anyway.
Kazu (59) → Still an active second-division pro, oldest goal scorer ever!
Guess soccer's a sport for seniors.
I want "King Kazu" to put on the red vest and take a 90-minute stroll around the pitch. Now that'd be a heartwarming sight. (the red vest is traditionally worn to celebrate a 60th "kanreki" birthday in Japan)
So the whole "people are abandoning TV" thing is a lie. The shows are just boring, that's all.
Soccer's got way too many young viewers.
Meanwhile baseball's all old people lol
First, Gen Z (25 and under): trending slightly upward, but still low across the board, not even reaching 10%. Very few in this generation seem interested in baseball.
The core demographic (13–49) isn't high either. It edges up slightly, but it's still more than 5 points below the overall average.
By age, it's the middle-aged and older who prop up its popularity. Those in their 50s–60s run 7–8 points above the overall average. And for those 70 and up, it's nearly double the overall average. Baseball really is a sport sustained by the elderly.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion
Dentsu’s survey covered the FIFA World Cup 2026 (held June–July 2026), gathering responses from 3,000 people aged 15–69. Interest rose from 32.0% at the point Japan qualified, climbing with each subsequent match, and reached 41.9% by the time of the Brazil match. Television broadcast was the most common viewing method at 53.1%, though the data also showed many viewers combining it with streaming. On the thread, this result kicked off an extended comparison with the WBC (baseball), which was in the news around the same time, with claims that “soccer is for the young, baseball is for the old” clashing against pushback. That said, it’s worth noting Dentsu’s survey is itself a macro-level poll of 3,000 people — a sample size typical of the kind used in general public-opinion surveys. On the broadcast side, there were also complaints about the use of multiple commentators and in-game advertising, suggesting that broad reach and high satisfaction aren’t necessarily the same thing.
*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Geisports Sokuhou+) thread “Dentsu conducts comprehensive survey on the 2026 soccer World Cup! The ‘relationship’ between TV broadcast and streaming revealed… roughly 80% of teen men and women ‘satisfied’ with the tournament.”
