The story

Morimoto, formerly of the comedy duo Tontsukatan, announced on the 17th via his official X account that he is changing his stage name to “Morimoto Shintaro.” Tontsukatan disbanded this past April, and Morimoto will now work as a solo comedian. On the thread, many voiced surprise that he’d end up sharing the exact same name as SixTONES’ Morimoto Shintaro, while others pointed out how confusing this could get in TV listings and search results. Speculation also flew about why he couldn’t keep the duo’s name and what led to the breakup in the first place, leaving reactions split.

Is he trying to overlap with that Johnny's guy who's always in dramas?
Feels kind of like spite.

Re: #8
Maybe that's why he wrote 'Shintaro' in hiragana — to avoid exactly that.
12AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:47
I had no idea at first and thought he was a news announcer.
13AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:47
So in TV listings they'll probably distinguish him as 'Morimoto Shi'
though the other guy will likely just keep getting billed as 'SixTONES' Morimoto' anyway.
14AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:48
Wait, there's one in Johnny's too?
The exact same full name?
19AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:50
I mean, that just makes him look like a SixTONES knockoff.
20AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:50
Isn't it rough for the straight-man (tsukkomi) role to go solo?
21AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:51
So he didn't get to keep the 'Tontsukatan' name?
80AnonymousSep 18, 2026 18:19
Re: #21
Apparently Morimoto joined the already-existing duo 'Tontsukatan' after the fact, so he wasn't really in a position to push back on that.
24AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:53
Takes some nerve to overlap with SixTONES like that
He's basically a main cast member on Tetsuwan DASH now, so his name recognition is pretty high, you know?

Re: #24
That SixTONES Morimoto Shintaro's older brother was also in Heisei Jump,
but he quit over a scandal and is now scraping by as a celebrity nobody really knows anymore —
goes to show that even Johnny's talent can vanish from the spotlight just like that.
25AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:54
How long is he gonna keep acting cool in that shirt?
26AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:54
A weirdly newsworthy guy considering he's not even that famous.
27AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:55
Omattya hated his guts,
so maybe he got complained at for holding onto the 'Tontsukatan' name forever?
33AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:58
Re: #27
Yeah, Ota said as much on 'Ota Ueda.'
29AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:56
So the member who barely worked and spent his time goofing off at music events was the one demanding to keep the 'Tontsukatan' name — and it finally drove him to change his stage name, huh.
30AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:56
Feel so bad for the glasses guy
He's not the type to push himself forward like Omattya does…
34AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:58
His hobbies, his social circle, everything about him just gives off that over-the-top 'aaahhh' energy (slang for a flashy, try-hard vibe).
47AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:16
Saw him on some show without the gradient shirt and felt weirdly let down.
49AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:17
Feel like there was a guy with this name on Tetsuwan DASH
haven't watched in a long time though.
50AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:20
Still can't figure out why Nippon Broadcasting pulled Fuwa off the show
They could've just had him apologize on the radio instead.
51AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:21
He was probably genuinely told to 'give the Tontsukatan name back,' lol
52AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:22
So does that make it 'Tontsukatan Sakurada' from now on?
55AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:43
Wait, 'Morimoto Shintaro' is literally the same name as the guy on Tetsuwan DASH.
56AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:50
The guy who's really good at running the show — I first knew him from the Fuwa-chan thing
Wait, is he even a comedian?
57AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:50
Did he work up the courage thinking 'I'm the older one here, no reason to defer to some younger Johnny's guy' and just go with this name anyway lol
60AnonymousSep 18, 2026 17:53
He doesn't say anything funny and his hosting is just average
Might as well be a network announcer.

What an MC needs is the ability to put things into words.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Tontsukatan was a duo made up of Morimoto and his partner Sakurada (Omattya), but the pair disbanded this past April and the duo’s name stayed with Sakurada’s side rather than Morimoto’s. The official reason for the name change hasn’t been disclosed, but the thread focused heavily on the fact that “Morimoto Shintaro” shares the exact same name as SixTONES’ Morimoto Shintaro. Celebrities sharing identical names isn’t unusual, and the resulting confusion in TV listings and search results has been a recurring topic in the past as well. Since Tontsukatan started out as a unit that Morimoto joined after the fact, it’s said that this is why his side wasn’t able to keep the duo’s name when it disbanded. That said, neither party has explained the details of the exchanges behind the breakup or the direct reason for the name change, so it’s worth noting that everything in the thread remains speculation.
