Kura Sushi x Mercari: Tracking Down Resellers of Scalped Goods — 5ch Reacts: “Like Selling a Knife to a Murderer”

From our other sites

The story

Kura Sushi’s move to team up with Mercari to identify the sellers behind fraudulent listings — pre-release items and goods illegally leaked by people posing as staff or insiders — became a hot topic on 5ch’s Newsoku VIP board. The thread erupted into a debate over how far a platform operator’s responsibility extends, pitting the view that “Mercari, which provides the marketplace and collects fees, also bears responsibility for managing it” against the counterargument that “like knife or car manufacturers, the blame lies with whoever misuses the product, not the platform.”

What people said

Nah, Mercari's at fault too — and the thread explodes even more lol
9AnonymousSep 8, 2026 11:57
I wonder if the people criticizing Mercari also go around criticizing knife makers and car makers
Sounds like a rough way to live

Re: #9
Mercari takes a cut of every sale
It's not like they're just handing out free flea-market space
14AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:02
Re: #9
Mercari provides the marketplace (the platform), so the knife comparison is a bit off
If a crime happens at an event you're hosting and you just let it slide, it's only natural the organizer gets held responsible
Mercari clearly knows this too, which is why they're cooperating on tracking down the culprit
16AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:03
Re: #14
But knives and cars are also "provided" by their manufacturers, no?
20AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:09
Re: #18
Of course they are, they're just tools
Here's an obvious fact for you: if there were no resellers, reselling wouldn't happen. Did you know that?
17AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:06
"Teaming up"? So they just hand over personal info whenever one company asks?
34AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:17
Re: #17
Sounds like Mercari itself is the one contacting the sellers directly
26AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:12
Re: #20
Right, so I'm making the "obvious" point that "it's not the same as just selling a tool"
30AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:14
Re: #26
Right, so I'm making the obvious point that "whoever misuses it is the one at fault"
31AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:16
Re: #30
Mercari's the one managing the platform, so Mercari's at fault too for letting it run wild
37AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:20
Re: #31
It's not that they're "at fault," they just need to take countermeasures
39AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:22
Re: #37
This exact problem has happened over and over and they still haven't done anything about it — that makes them at fault
38AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:22
Re: #32
So it turns out you're the one who's off-base, since you've been arguing this whole time based on whether it forms a marketplace
41AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:23
Re: #39
That's exactly why I said I wonder if people like that also criticize knives and cars
53AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:33
Re: #45
Oh, so now you're shifting the goalposts to whether they "manage" it or not?
57AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:35
"Providing the venue is the problem!" — so if someone gets hurt at a park, is that entirely on the park's management?
Are you gonna say "kids might get hurt, why weren't you watching the park 24/7"?
59AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:38
Re: #57
That's exactly why they remove and update dangerous playground equipment
60AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:38
Re: #57
Guys like this just want to force a comparison so they have something easy to bash
That's why it falls apart the moment you hold it up against other examples
72AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:48
Re: #57
Totally different — Mercari is a direct party that profits from the transaction via fees
If we're using the knife analogy, it's more like selling a knife to a known murderer
It's not "the buyer turned out to be a murderer and I had no idea" — it's "I sold it even though it might be a murderer, didn't care"
That's exactly why knife and car makers aren't liable but Amazon and Mercari are
People blur this distinction to pull the sophistry of "it's the same as a knife," the same way scalpers claim "it's the same as wholesale"
They know full well what the actual problem is (well, maybe some genuinely don't), but they play innocent and go "not my responsibility!"
64AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:41
I feel like both the knife and the park comparisons are a pretty big stretch, but I guess that's fine?
69AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:45
Re: #64
How exactly are they a stretch?
I think both are pretty clear analogies when it comes to the question of responsibility between producer and user
67AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:43
So should platforms just go full AI auto-ban and accept some false accusations as acceptable collateral?
I mean, that is technically an option
71AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:46
Re: #67
I think that's where it's headed
If you can't produce proof of your innocence, you're out
Just like groping accusations — once you're suspected, you're basically done for
75AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:53
Re: #67
Why would you assume a big corporation would make a decision that only caters to your jealousy of resellers?

They'll just keep running business as usual and occasionally put out a notice to make it look like they're doing something
Companies exist to chase profit — why would they need to cater one by one to your "something about this feels off!" feelings when it's not even illegal?
73AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:50
By that logic, manufacturers are also parties profiting from it lol
Your argument was broken from the start, hilarious
86AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:00
Re: #73
That's exactly why it's different
Take knives, for example — stores do things like "bring this tag to the register"
They're not saying "fine if a murderer buys it, long as we get the sale"
Amazon and Mercari are different — they're direct parties who let shady sellers run wild while pretending "we have nothing to do with the shop"
90AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:03
Re: #86
Knife sellers also say "I have nothing to do with murderers" while letting murderers walk around freely, don't they?
If we're being consistent, shouldn't knife sellers collect full personal info to make sure murderers can't buy one, and make everyone sign a contract swearing "I will absolutely never use this to kill"?
There have been countless knife-related murders in the past, so the danger is well known, after all
110AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:23
Re: #86
Uh, knife murders happen all the time and they still keep manufacturing knives lol
91AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:04
If we're going with the knife analogy for Mercari, it's like selling a knife labeled "for killing people" right on the box — totally out of line
In this case, sellers claiming to be "staff" or to have "family who works there" while unloading multiple pre-release items — that's obviously smuggled-out stock, and that's exactly why it's not okay
93AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:05
Re: #91
That's exactly why they're now teaming up with Kura Sushi to crack down on it lol
95AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:07
Re: #91
But there's no law specifically regulating smuggled-out goods
Mercari can only step in once the victim or the police officially call it theft

Background and Key Points of the Debate

No law directly regulates leaked goods or reselling itself, and in practice Mercari can only act once it receives a report calling something “stolen.” This collaboration with Kura Sushi appears to be a response shaped by exactly those limitations. The thread’s conflict stems from a difference in underlying assumptions about the platform — whether to treat it as a “mere tool provider” (like a knife or car maker) or as “a direct party that manages the marketplace in exchange for fees.” Since both analogies are extreme, the debate easily turns circular. In practice, the real difference in how responsibility should be assigned comes down to this: manufacturers have no way to manage individual sellers, whereas Mercari is in a position to access seller information and transaction history.
