Why Live in France? Hiroyuki Gives a Blunt Answer — 5ch: “That’s Not Even an Answer to the Question”

The story

On the 11th, entrepreneur Hiroyuki (Hiroyuki Nishimura) posted on X (formerly Twitter) a reply to the question, “Why do you keep living in France, where riots keep breaking out and security is a growing concern?” His answer amounted to a theory of social movements: protests where activists just loiter in front of parliament get ignored and nothing changes, but once a protest causes real disruption — blocking roads and schools — the government finally gets moving. On 5ch, commenters quickly pointed out that “he was asked why he lives there, but his answer doesn’t actually address that,” and the thread went on to speculate about the circumstances of his move to France and his past controversies.

Hiroyuki Gives a Blunt Answer to “Why Live in France, Where Riots Keep Breaking Out and Security Is a Concern?”

Entrepreneur Hiroyuki Nishimura (49) updated his X (formerly Twitter) account on the 11th, addressing his reasons for continuing to live in France.

Hiroyuki remarked on France’s large-scale protests, saying: “When activists just loiter in front of parliament, it gets ignored and nothing in society changes. It’s when roads and schools get blocked and people are genuinely inconvenienced that the government finally drags itself into action. A social movement nobody complains about is the same as doing nothing.”

Totally missed the question
They asked why he lives there

Re: #2
Maybe his own neighborhood is safe, so it just doesn't affect him?

Come on, read between the lines lol

Well, Paris Fashion Week and everything still runs just fine there
8AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:28
Well, in Japan they just send the cops in to tackle anyone causing a nuisance
10AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:31
Seems like you'd get hit with a ton of discrimination there though
Though I guess money solves most problems lol

Hiroyuki: "Good, good — nobody's figured out yet that I actually live in Southeast Asia."

If he were living in Singapore as one of life's winners,
I'd be like "Oh!? Nice one!"
12AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:31
Probably rough for people who commute,
but if you're the type who just stays holed up at home, maybe it doesn't really affect you that much?

Re: #1
He's defending France's protests by saying a demonstration is meaningless unless it actually inconveniences people,
but then it's only the areas where the protests are happening that have bad security, while his own neighborhood carries on as normal —
doesn't that mean, by his own logic, it's not a real protest unless it disrupts Hiroyuki's own neighborhood too?

Re: #15
It's not his problem, is it
He's just sticking his nose in
18AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:38
There's no way you can live a decent life in France.
Security's pretty bad, the streets are filthy, and there's no air conditioning.
It's basically a punishment game.
19AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:39
Is he really living in France?
I bet he's actually somewhere around Nippori (a working-class Tokyo neighborhood)

Re: #19
"The London of Gunma" was fun while it lasted (a joking nickname for a spot back in Japan)

He didn't give a straight answer at all, and if he really lives in France he should quit meddling in Japanese politics
21AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:41
Idiots think whatever's on TV cameras is all there is to France lol

Re: #21
Not just France — footage from any country abroad is only ever the part they're willing to show you lol
22AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:41
You don't even need to go there to know Paris is trash
24AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:44
This guy probably ran off and is actually back in Japan right now lol

Re: #24
He goes on about "why I walked away from 2channel," playing himself up as some carefree guy with no attachments,
but it turns out he never actually gave it up — it just descended into an ugly rights dispute, which was kind of funny

He keeps claiming he has no desire for money, power, or fame,
but honestly he seems to crave money, power, and fame more than anyone

France is a country that was founded through riots and revolution.
Because of that history, what they're doing is simply being true to what France is.
The question of whether to live there or not comes after you understand that.
27AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:47
Wow, the "I live in France" bit is still going, huh
28AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:47
Same with flooding news in Japan — apparently the media just stakes out spots ahead of time that are geographically prone to flooding
89AnonymousOct 12, 2026 11:42
Re: #28
Yeah, there's no point watching the news then
30AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:49
There's also the flip side — reforms don't move forward precisely because riots keep happening
32AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:49
If that's the case, he should just stop poking his nose into Japan's affairs from so far away
34AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:50
Well, it's over the moment guys like this cut and run
46AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:59
Re: #1
What, it's not even "because the food's great" lol
Well, if I had unlimited money too, I'd probably split my time between Paris and London.
48AnonymousOct 12, 2026 10:59
No matter what state France ends up in,
he's lectured everyone so smugly about it for so long
that he can't back down now even if he wanted to
56AnonymousOct 12, 2026 11:06
He was also adamant that "Chinese, go [home]" graffiti wasn't discrimination either

Re: #56
There's probably a name for this in psychology — wanting so badly to believe the choice you made wasn't wrong that you end up ignoring its flaws, or just affirming it no matter what

Like, you justify yourself by convincing yourself that wherever you didn't choose, or where you used to be, must be bad, while the place you did choose must be great
63AnonymousOct 12, 2026 11:14
He answered somewhere before that it was because his wife said she wanted France

Re: #63
Apparently she actually wanted to live in Canada,
but Hiroyuki went ahead and decided on France instead

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Hiroyuki is an entrepreneur and media personality who, after his time running Nico Nico Douga and the former 2channel, now publicly lives in France, and his posts on X (formerly Twitter) are frequently picked up as news. This particular post was framed by the original article’s headline as “his answer to why he lives in France,” but the actual content stuck to his personal theory about how protests and social movements function within France, and never directly answered the question of why he personally lives there. On 5ch, commenters flagged this disconnect early on, after which the discussion drifted into speculation about his actual living situation and his past history (including the dispute over control of the old 2channel). This article leaves out posts that state unverified claims about money troubles or legal matters as fact, one-sided blanket judgments about specific countries or cities, and posts carrying political labels, sticking instead to a summary of his remarks and the reactions to them.
