  • Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen’s Trade-In Value Crashes to Just 1/4 on Release Day—But Only on PS5, 5ch Asks ‘How Did This Happen?’

Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is making waves on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board after it emerged that the PS5 physical edition’s used trade-in price on release day had dropped to roughly a quarter of the usual amount (6,000 yen). The thread is split between two theories: one holds that the opening of a pirate-game store around the same time pushed more people to resell their copies, while the other is structural — the disc contains only the base game, and since stores can’t verify whether the paper DLC code has already been redeemed, they buy it back as if it were the “vanilla” (non-Dark Arisen) version. The discussion also touches on how the Switch 2 version behaves differently, since it uses a key-card system.

I mean, a pirate-game store (one selling illegally copied discs) opened right around this game's release, so I guess it can't be helped

    Re: #25
    That actually seems pretty plausible
    28AnonymousOct 9, 2026 13:42
Oh, is it that the disc only has the base game, and there's just a slip of paper with a code in the case?

    Re: #28
    Yep
The disc has the base game, the paper slip has the DLC
That's why it's treated as the vanilla edition on the used market

If the code's already been redeemed, the used copy doesn't actually come with Dark Arisen

Seems the same as the PS version, but even if everything's downloaded via key card, surely Dark Arisen can only be redeemed once and can't be re-downloaded on a different console, right?

I guess the point is that the store buying it back has no way of knowing whether the serial code's been used
And they can't exactly boot up the 'Trash Station' (a derisive nickname for the PS5) and try entering it, can they

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In recent years, even big-budget console titles have increasingly shipped with only the main game on the disc, due to disc capacity limits, while extra content is handed out via a paper serial code included in the case. On the used-game market there’s no mechanical way for a store to check whether such a code has already been redeemed, so stores play it safe and buy the game back at a price equivalent to the “base game only” (no DLC) — which is why, even though the package says ‘Dark Arisen,’ the trade-in value tends to drop sharply. In the thread, two theories circulate without a clear resolution: a demand-side theory that the opening of a pirate-game store around the same time pushed more people to resell their copies, and a structural theory that the drop simply reflects stores pricing around the unverifiable DLC code. It’s also worth noting that the Switch 2 version uses a key-card system that requires downloading content each time, so even though it also involves a ‘paper code’ of sorts, the circumstances differ and shouldn’t be equated with what’s happening on PS5 — a point readers can easily get confused about.

  • Consumer Spending Falls for 9th Straight Month, Down 3.1% in August — 5ch: “Anyone Who Actually Shops Knows Prices Are Soaring”

On the 9th, Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications released August household survey data showing that consumption spending for households of two or more people fell 3.1% year-on-year in real terms, marking the ninth consecutive month of decline. For worker households, real income fell 0.9% while consumption spending dropped even more sharply, down 6.8%. On 5ch’s Breaking News+ thread, opinions clashed between posters cutting back on living expenses due to high prices and those arguing the economy isn’t bad at all given the stock rally and rising asset values. Many also wondered why consumption is falling even as real wages rise. Opinions were split on the merits of policies like rate hikes and the tax system too.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ August household survey, released on the 9th, showed that consumption spending per household (two or more people) was 310,975 yen, down 3.1% year-on-year in real terms once price changes are stripped out. This marks the ninth consecutive month of decline.

Real income for worker households (excluding the self-employed, etc.) was 616,704 yen, down 0.9%, while consumption spending was 331,134 yen, down 6.8%.

Last year it was the opposite — real wages were negative but real consumption was positive.

Maybe there's a time lag between changes in real wages and changes in real consumption, or maybe
even 'real' figures don't fully strip out price effects, so some of the swings from volatile rice prices still bleed into the real consumption numbers

though that's partly a rebound from how bad last year was
    https://gzo.ai/i/dDfvjYt.jpg

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “real” figure in the household survey measures changes in purchasing power with price increases stripped out — a different concept from nominal income and spending — and the thread had plenty of posts that confused the two. The drop in consumption spending stems both from people cutting back on essentials due to high prices and from wage growth failing to keep pace with prices. At the same time, some people have grown their assets thanks to the rising Nikkei, and posters noted a widening gap in how good or bad the economy feels depending on whether you hold assets. On whether rate hikes and tax policy are justified, several tangled issues — the weak yen, import prices, the scale of fiscal spending — meant the thread never reached a consensus.

  • Kudo Kimiyasu Named Chunichi’s New Manager — Fans Split Over Whether It’s a Career Risk

Kudo Kimiyasu — the storied manager who led SoftBank to four Japan Series titles — has been named the new manager of the Chunichi Dragons. The Dragons have stayed mired in a slump through the tenures of both Tatsunami Kazuyoshi and Inoue Kazuki as manager, so Kudo’s hire is being pitched as a rebuilding effort. But on 5ch, the question that caught fire was: why would a manager with Kudo’s track record take on a team that could tarnish his legacy? Optimists in the thread argued the risk is low — “if he loses, the front office takes the blame” and “even a 3rd-place finish would be seen as one of the greatest managerial feats ever” — while more cautious posters warned his reputation could take a hit, pointing to Mori Masaaki, whose standing suffered after managing the BayStars. Reactions were split right down the middle.

All because some unnamed somebody screwed up, huh.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Kudo Kimiyasu is known as a “master manager,” having built a record that includes four Japan Series championships during his time leading SoftBank. The Chunichi Dragons, by contrast, have remained stuck in a slump through the managerial terms of both Tatsunami Kazuyoshi and Inoue Kazuki, and this hire is drawing attention as an attempt to turn that around. What split the thread was the question of why a manager with Kudo’s résumé would take on this much reputational risk. One camp argued that Kudo himself takes zero damage either way, since a loss can simply be blamed on the front office; the other camp countered that his legacy could still be tarnished, pointing to Mori Masaaki, whose reputation took a hit after managing the BayStars. It’s worth noting that details like “someone nicknamed ‘Tattsu’ bowing on his knees to beg Kudo to take the job,” as well as the various comments about other teams’ alumni, aren’t verified facts — they’re speculation and jokes within the thread. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the idea of “3rd place as the passing grade” is just fan opinion, not a target the club has officially stated — something the article alone can’t confirm.

  • Shunsuke Sakuma Gives Announcer Rio Kitagawa Some Real Advice — Hikaru Ijuin: ‘I Want the Young Women to Hear This’

A TV Tokyo program featured a scene in which writer-producer Shunsuke Sakuma gave advice to announcer Rio Kitagawa, a former member of Morning Musume. ’22, and the clip went viral on social media. A post describing Hikaru Ijuin’s reaction — “I want the young women at my agency to hear this” — was then shared on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread’s discussion ranged well beyond the actual advice itself, touching on Kitagawa’s new duties since October hosting segments like “Tore Tama neo” on “WBS,” and how her current standing compares with former groupmates Marai Makino and Tsubasa Hasumi — with reactions to the surrounding backstory outweighing talk of the advice itself.

Maybe Ijuin senses that Kitagawa — sharp, able to throw out biting remarks, and even self-destructive at times — is closer to his own old stance than anyone else.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Announcer Rio Kitagawa is a former member of Morning Musume. ’22 who, after graduating, transitioned into a career as a TV Tokyo announcer. The program clip shared in the thread was essentially a preview of a scene where Shunsuke Sakuma gives her advice, and since the specific content of that advice wasn’t included, discussion in the thread drifted away from “what the advice actually was” and toward Kitagawa’s career background and the people around her. Comparisons were drawn with former groupmates such as Marai Makino (now thriving in variety shows) and Tsubasa Hasumi (known for a debate with Ijuin), along with how she handled teasing about her Morning Musume past at a TV Tokyo event — all feeding into discussion of her position as an announcer with an idol background. Note that mentions of a “secret account” refer to previously reported personal topics and were not presented as confirmed fact even within the thread, so that exchange has been excluded from this article.

  • Nijigasaki ‘Final Chapter’ Announcement Event Set for October 16 — 5ch Reacts: ‘Well, That’s It Then’

During a livestream for “Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club,” it was announced that a presentation event revealing the latest information on the “Eigasaki Final Chapter” movie (a pun blending “eiga,” meaning “movie,” with “Nijigasaki”) will be held on October 16. The event will feature Hinaki Yano, Miyu Kubota, and Akina Houmoto. Thread posters, who had been bracing for a big announcement, voiced relief that the mysterious “important news” turned out to be movie-related — but since the word “final” wasn’t used, opinions split over whether this signals the series continuing or winding down. The discussion further escalated into a back-and-forth between Nijigasaki fans and Liella!/School Idol Festival fans arguing over which side gets more support, with the thread stuck in an unresolved argument right to the end.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Nijigasaki High School Idol Club” is one entry in the Love Live! franchise, sitting alongside “Hasunosora Girls’ School Idol Club” and the game “School Idol Festival” (referred to in the thread by the nickname “Stars”). The thread’s disagreement centered on the fact that, despite being called the “Final Chapter,” the announcement didn’t take the form of a final-performance event — some read that as a sign the series is continuing, others as just a stopping point. Commenters cited specific figures like box office revenue and queue wait times, but it’s worth noting these all came from individual 5ch posters rather than any official source. The rivalry between the series appears to be an extension of a long-running fan concern over how opportunities get allocated across the different titles within the shared Love Live! franchise.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Stroke isn’t a disease limited to people with narrow blood vessels or the elderly — there are reported cases of seemingly healthy people carrying small, asymptomatic strokes, and the personal accounts in the thread reflect that reality fairly closely. On the other hand, Instagram’s “community guidelines violation” warnings are issued by an automated system; it’s well known that posts quoting articles with copyright concerns or including links are prone to tripping the rules, while malicious illegal streaming and the like often go unaddressed — an inconsistency in enforcement that users frequently point out, and today’s reaction is an extension of that frustration. The comment in the thread about being able to “get same-day surgery” appears to refer to catheter-based treatment, and since not every stroke qualifies for that, it’s a point readers could easily misunderstand.

  • Dodgers’ Official X Photo Is Missing Ohtani — 5ch Reacts: ‘Guess He’s Just on a Different Level’

A photo posted by the Dodgers’ official X (formerly Twitter) account related to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) was missing Shohei Ohtani, sparking discussion on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. Opinions clashed between those saying “of course he’s left out this time” given his batting slump in the Division Series, and those questioning the team’s handling with comments like “they paid him 100 billion yen and this is how they treat him?” Views on how fans on the ground are reacting were also split — some took it as proof his status is now firmly established, while others saw it as evidence he’s facing harsher scrutiny.

    13AnonymousOct 9, 2026 12:08
Lol, it's not just Japanese Dodgers fans — he's getting the same treatment locally too.
The only ones lying and acting like Ohtani is the team's main star are Japan's old-guard fake-news media.

    Re: #98
    That's already priced in, surely.
    104AnonymousOct 9, 2026 12:38

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Shohei Ohtani’s contract has a unique structure where the bulk of his 10-year, $700 million deal is deferred and paid out after retirement — the “death row inmate” phrase used in the thread is baseball-fan slang that specifically refers to this kind of contract. The debate centered on whether this “omission” reflected an overall season evaluation or was simply a lineup/usage decision limited to the current National League Championship Series (NLCS). Some posts cited his cumulative stats (30 home runs, a 1.79 ERA, an 8-2 record) to argue he’s “performing plenty well,” while others pointed to his Division Series slump to argue that “recent results matter most” — a classic case of talking past each other over whether to judge by season-long totals or recent performance, a mismatch common in sports debates. It’s worth noting that there’s no primary source within the thread indicating the team’s actual intent, so this remains speculation.

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board (known as “Geha”), posters were chatting based on Weekly Famitsu’s Top 30 sales chart. The talk centered on reports that nearly 30,000 copies of Wolverine are still sitting unsold in the market, and that a brand-new first-party title had already dropped out of the rankings in just its third week on sale. The thread also brought up whether bundle editions of Dragon Quest XI S and Octopath Traveler would end up in bargain bins (so-called “wagon sales”), and — as usual — the regular back-and-forth continued over whether it’s Switch 2’s third-party games or PS5’s first-party games that are really struggling.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Famitsu Top 30 is a weekly package-sales ranking compiled from major domestic retailers in Japan, and it doesn’t reflect digital download sales. Because of this, recurring arguments like “Switch 2 is where third-party games don’t sell” or “PS5 is where first-party games don’t sell” tend to turn into shouting matches based on only part of the full picture, and this thread never reached any real conclusion either. Figures that came up, like “30,000 unsold copies of Wolverine” or a “2,000 yen trade-in price,” are also just speculation based on movements at certain stores or in the used-game market — not official figures released by the publisher — so some caution is warranted. Terms like “wagon” (bargain bin), “fukubukuro” (New Year’s lucky grab bag), and “utsubukuro” (literally “gloom bag,” a pun on fukubukuro) are also just slang that 5ch users commonly throw around for games that aren’t selling well, and don’t necessarily mean an actual clearance sale has been decided on.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hardware & Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “[10/9] Famitsu Top 30 Update.”

  • 60% of Twenty-Somethings Want a Promotion—But Not the Overtime: 5ch Debates ‘Does Pay Really Drop When You Become a Section Chief?’

A Yahoo! News report on the finding that “young people today don’t want to get promoted” sparked debate on 5ch. About 60% of people in their twenties said they want a promotion, while roughly 50% said they don’t want overtime even if it means earning more — and the thread buzzed with theories trying to reconcile that apparent contradiction. Posters pointed out that becoming a manager can mean a higher base salary but no more overtime pay, so take-home pay can actually drop; others questioned the labor-law provision that exempts “managers and supervisors” from overtime pay altogether; still others raised the twisted incentive where the most capable employees get stuck at the office even after finishing their work early, while slower coworkers who take longer effectively come out ahead. The whole thread turned into a cost-benefit argument over whether promotion is even worth it.

“It’s not just that I find the work fulfilling — my aptitude actually seems to suit this job, so I’d like to move up past my peers and seniors into some kind of leadership position.”

So says a man in his twenties who works at a toy manufacturer in Tokyo.

“Young people today don’t want to get promoted” — or so the narrative goes.

    Re: #2
    Used to happen, yeah.

Going from team leader (主任) to section chief (課長) could mean a pay cut.
Your base salary goes up, but you lose overtime pay, so it takes about three years to break even.
Our industry's pretty cushy by trade standards — even 30 hours of overtime a month was considered a lot —

but these days even regular staff are increasingly on discretionary-labor deals, so it's basically like being salaried/exempt anyway.
    17AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:45

This kind of mindset comes from bad early training, honestly.
The typical salaried employment contract is time-bound — it says so explicitly in the employment contract and work terms.
So deciding for yourself where "your job" ends, based on your own sense of workload, is fundamentally not how it works.
Once your boss gives you an instruction, that instruction is now your job.
Talking about overtime pay on top of that is just losing the plot.

Can you look at a boss shuffling home at 11pm with bloodshot eyes, head down, and think "I want that promotion"?

Can you look at a boss who spends his days off at the office and think "I want that"?

Can you look at a boss whose responsibilities ballooned while his pay barely budged and think "I want that"?

Of course people are going to hate it unless promotion actually leads somewhere worth dreaming about.

I'm not even in management, but junior staff have quit just from seeing my working conditions. In the office every weekend, stuck doing everything myself because nobody else can, can't even take paid leave, and all-nighters aren't rare. Pay's the same or worse than theirs (can't move up because the ranks above are clogged).
Companies need to actually make this a place people want to work, or it's pointless.
The gap in results and skill between people is huge, and complaints from the incompetent just get ignored anyway (since they never quit regardless).
    That's just how it is.

Honestly, the bigger issue than overtime is the absolute refusal to accept a transfer.
People quit the moment a relocation order comes down.
That's especially true for people born and raised in Tokyo.
Funny thing is, the grandparents' generation fled the countryside for Tokyo precisely because they hated it there — but now that it's been two straight generations of dual-income households, today's young people get stuck the moment they're separated from their parents, since there's no one left to help with childcare.

Just hire locally at each location then — saves you the trouble of layoffs too.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The reason managers generally don’t receive overtime pay is Article 41, Item 2 of Japan’s Labor Standards Act, which exempts “managers and supervisors” from working-hour regulations — a designation meant to come with real authority over hiring/scheduling decisions, discretion over one’s own hours, and compensation to match. Where the thread split was over whether that rule matches reality: some argued it makes sense for department-head (部長) level and above, while others countered that at the section-chief (課長) level, managers typically have neither the discretion nor the pay to justify it, making it effectively illegal unpaid overtime. There was also a broader productivity argument — that the most capable workers lose out by being kept at the office until quitting time even after finishing early — which fed into wider frustration with seniority-based, presence-focused work culture. One point readers often get wrong: not all managers are automatically ineligible for overtime pay. Employers are still legally required to pay overtime to so-called “manager in title only” (名ばかり管理職) employees who don’t actually meet the legal criteria.

  • New PSP Rumored to Have 8-Inch Screen, Internal SSD + High-Speed SD Card — 5ch: ‘It’s Basically a Reiwa-Era Game Gear’

Unofficial leaks report that Sony is developing a handheld, the “PS6 Portable” — essentially a new PSP — alongside its next console, the “PS6.” The PS6 is expected to stay above $1,000 due to soaring component costs, and the new PSP is drawing attention as a cheaper device that can still run PS4/PS5 titles. New information also suggests the screen will be around 8 inches, with storage following the Switch 2’s approach of internal SSD plus a high-speed SD card slot. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, discussion kept going, mixing concerns that it would inherit the Switch 2’s weight and battery problems, debate over the leaked TFLOPS figures, and comments that it “looks like nothing but a Switch clone.”

Multiple sources have reported that Sony is developing a handheld gaming device, the “PS6 Portable” — essentially a new PSP — alongside its next-generation console, the “PlayStation 6.” Note that Sony has not officially announced either device by name, so for now this remains unofficial information.

As for the console PS6, its suggested retail price is expected to stay above $1,000 due to rising component costs, including memory. Because of this, attention is turning to the new PSP, which is said to support PS4/PS5 titles and would presumably be relatively cheaper, letting you “display on a big TV via a dock at home, and play on the built-in screen when out.”

Various new details about this new PSP have also surfaced, covering its processor, power consumption, and a storage setup described as “internal storage plus an SD card slot, like the Switch 2.”

If the leaked APU specs are accurate, they're going the low-spec, low-power route, so weight and battery life should land around Switch 2 level or a bit better.
But the specs themselves are nothing special either — above the Switch 2, below the Xbox Series S, and only catching up to Series S level by leaning on the newer architecture

    Re: #47
In the Moore's Law Is Dead leak that Tane (the article's author) is citing as his source, the PSP3's handheld-mode spec is 4.91 TFLOPS — so even in portable mode it's about 1.5x more powerful than the Switch 2 at full docked power.
The process node is TSMC N3P too, so it's not even comparable to the Switch 2's Samsung 8nm.
And architecture-wise, setting aside AMD vs. nVIDIA entirely, there's something like a 4-generation gap

But for RDNA3 and later you should calculate FLOPS at roughly half the value of RDNA2-and-earlier, so 4.91 TFLOPS still falls short of the Series S.

If they're copying the console's form factor, they absolutely need something more appealing than the Switch.
Even if it's more powerful and priced the same as or below the Switch, it's basically dead on arrival since it can't run Nintendo games.

If they release it as a mobile-device form factor, its real rival stops being the Switch and becomes UMPCs instead
    — people have been saying that for a while now

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This topic originates from multiple unofficial leaks claiming Sony is developing a handheld, the “PS6 Portable” (a new PSP), alongside the console “PS6” — Sony has made no official announcement of either. On pricing, the PS6 console itself is expected to stay above $1,000 due to soaring component costs like memory, and the claim that the new PSP will be “relatively cheap” is only a comparison against that baseline — it’s easy to mistake this for an actually affordable price. Where the thread split was over how much to trust the specs: some took an optimistic view of performance based on the TFLOPS figures, while others, citing differences between RDNA generations, argued those numbers were overrated. On the other hand, concerns about practical handheld issues like weight, heat, and battery life, plus the view that it’s just imitating the Switch 2, were common across many posts. CFW and emulation also came up, but these were discussed as general knowledge about modding existing hardware rather than anything specific to this leak.
