  • 76% of Elementary Schoolers Say They’re Self-Conscious About Looks — 5ch Clashes Over ‘Appearance Is a Mirror of the Heart’

A survey conducted by the Mainichi Elementary School Newspaper (Mainichi Shogakusei Shimbun) in June 2024 found that 76% of elementary school students said they were “concerned” about their own or others’ appearance. The finding comes against a backdrop of how deeply the term “lookism” — judging people by their looks — has permeated society. On 5ch, a thread saw clashing views: some backed the saying “appearance is a mirror of the heart,” while others questioned the very idea of linking looks to inner character. Opinions that basic grooming and dressing appropriately for the occasion (TPO) are simply necessary collided with criticism that “lookism” is just an excuse to justify attacks on people’s bodies and faces, and the discussion spiraled all the way out to what people value when choosing a marriage partner.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“Lookism” is a concept that originated in the United States in the 1970s, a term that treats judging and sorting people by appearance as a form of discrimination alongside race and gender. In Japan, it has spread in recent years mainly through social media, and this survey’s results were reported as evidence of how far the concept has taken hold. However, it’s easy to overlook that answering “concerned” is not the same as having actually experienced bullying or discrimination — it merely expresses interest in or anxiety about appearance. The clash within the thread also largely comes down to a mismatch between those who treat lookism as a principle that “people shouldn’t be hurt over how they look” and those with the practical stance that “judging appearance is only natural within the bounds of basic grooming and dressing for the occasion (TPO).” Because neither side has agreed on a definition of what actually counts as lookism, the two sides are often talking past each other even while using the same word.

    Background and Talking Points

King Gainer is a Sunrise-produced robot anime directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino that aired in 2002, marking its 24th anniversary this year. Tomino’s works — including the Gundam series — are known for mercilessly killing off major characters, so this show stands out among longtime fans for wrapping up on a bright note where almost none of the cast dies, earning it a reputation as “surprisingly gentle for a Tomino show” and “the last Tomino anime you could just enjoy watching.” In the thread, the lighthearted generational jab “you guys seem like the type to talk about anime from 20 years ago” was actually met with an example from 24 years ago, which ended up exposing just how old the live-commentary crowd — and their reference points — really are. In another reply, the lack of gory content in the “Certain” (Toaru) franchise is explained with the offhand reasoning that “the characters are cute,” but it’s worth noting this is just one viewer’s casual impression, not an accurate account of the franchise’s actual content guidelines or the source material’s direction.

  • The Japanese Language Barrier Vanishes Thanks to AI — 5ch: “Turns Out Japanese Was Our Best Security All Along, lol”

Personal data leaks from cyberattacks targeting Japanese companies keep piling up — most recently, around 14.64 million member records leaked from the travel booking site “Skyticket.” Media reports pointed to AI’s advances tearing down the “Japanese language wall” that once made Japan a harder target, along with the fact that highly trusted Japanese personal data now fetches a premium on the black market. On 5ch, though, many pushed back on this “language wall” theory — pointing out that massive breaches have also hit the US, so Japan isn’t being uniquely singled out — and the discussion shifted from international comparisons to criticism of companies’ lax security practices.

Adventure Inc., which operates the travel booking site “Skyticket” among others, revealed on the 9th that its systems had suffered unauthorized access, leaking roughly 14.64 million member records to outside parties.

    Exactly.
Why do people act like it's only Japan?
There was a ranking of attack targets, and of course the US was #1, lol.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Skyticket leak involved roughly 14.64 million records, and similar incidents have hit other companies like BookOff as well. On October 9th, the government issued a notice calling on businesses that handle large volumes of personal data to adopt multi-factor authentication and thoroughly address vulnerabilities. The original article cites the collapse of the “Japanese language wall” thanks to AI advances as the main cause, but the thread pushed back hard, pointing to cases like the roughly 150 million driver’s license records leaked in the US, arguing that cyberattacks are a global phenomenon and Japan isn’t being uniquely singled out. The real point of contention was instead criticism of companies’ failure to invest in security, and the structural problem that leaks rarely lead to any real compensation or punishment — worth keeping in mind that framing this purely around the “language wall” angle can obscure these institutional and operational issues.

  • STARTO Corp Complains to Ministry Panel — Chair Turns Out to Have Backed the Other Side in Its Resale Lawsuit

STARTO ENTERTAINMENT, the talent agency formerly known as Johnny’s Office, has made an unusual complaint to an expert panel convened by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The panel is discussing a “sender information disclosure system” meant to identify the real identities of ticket scalpers — but it turns out the panel’s chair had previously written a legal opinion favoring the opposing side in a lawsuit STARTO itself filed against a ticket resale site. The agency, which has long been at odds with scalpers, has now turned its criticism toward the very government body meant to craft anti-scalping policy. On 5ch, alongside surprise at this twist, many users asked a more basic question: why is resale even treated as such a problem, and why does it run rampant when reselling above face value is already supposed to be illegal?

STARTO ENTERTAINMENT Co., Ltd. (STARTO), the talent agency representing performers formerly with Johnny’s Office, has lodged an unusual “complaint” with the government. The setting: an expert panel at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications discussing a “sender information disclosure system” designed to unmask the identities of ticket scalpers.

It turns out that the chair running that panel had previously written a legal opinion siding with the resale site that STARTO is currently suing in court. “Doesn’t this make it hard to call this fair?” The agency, which has fought scalpers for years, has finally turned its sights on the very body crafting the policy.

This article writes it up like STARTO is the villain here
    — just trying to bait idiots into biting.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Japan’s law banning unauthorized ticket resale took effect in 2019, making resale above face value illegal. In practice, though, high-priced resale on flea-market apps and similar platforms has never stopped, and there have long been doubts about how effectively the law is actually enforced. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications panel in question was convened to examine how to operate the “sender information disclosure system” for identifying scalpers’ identities — in principle, a framework meant to advance anti-scalping measures. What split opinion on the thread was how to judge the appointment of the panel’s chair. One camp held that “if someone close to the opposing party in the lawsuit is chairing the panel, it lacks fairness,” while another countered that “expert panels are meant to bring together people with opposing views in the first place, so including someone from one side is only natural.” On the more fundamental question of why resale is even a problem, many pointed to the fact that proper tax revenue never reaches the original sellers, and to the basic structure of scalpers targeting lottery losers to resell at inflated prices. At the same time, some comments turned the criticism back on the agencies themselves, arguing that allowing multiple fan-club entries per person and poorly designed lottery systems are what create the ticket shortages in the first place.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Geisports Sokuho+) thread “STARTO Raises a Flag Against the Ministry — The Bizarre Situation of the Opposing Party in a Ticket Resale Lawsuit Running the Expert Panel [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • New Xbox Title ‘Gears E-Day’ Sells 230K Copies — 5ch: ‘With Game Pass, It’s Really 950K’

Overseas analytics firm Alinea Analytics estimated that the Xbox-exclusive title ‘Gears E-Day’ sold around 230,000 copies in its first week, sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha). Thread participants pointed out that this figure doesn’t include the 722,000 Game Pass upgrades, suggesting the real number of paying users could be around 950,000. At the same time, many voiced doubts about the reliability of Alinea Analytics’ estimates themselves, and the debate spread to how the numbers should even be interpreted.

    3AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:41
Despite far fewer sales on Steam, Xbox accounts for nearly three-quarters of revenue (about $26 million of $37 million, versus roughly $11 million on Steam). In other words, the "230,000 units" figure understates the number of paying users. Including the 722,000 upgrades, roughly 950,000 people actually paid for E-Day. E-Day is a great game (it's in my top 10), but at a time when Xbox desperately needs a revenue win, these numbers fall short for a flagship title. E-Day sold 62,000 copies on Xbox, with 722,000 premium upgrades — meaning for every one copy sold on Xbox, about 12 Game Pass upgrades were sold.

The problem is it doesn't include Game Pass users' revenue, so it's just not credible.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The figure at the center of this discussion is an estimate that overseas analytics firm Alinea Analytics worked backward from earnings data and the like — it is not an official statistic released by the platform itself. Because Xbox’s business model leans more on monthly Game Pass subscriptions than on traditional retail sales, a simple “units sold” figure can’t capture the real number of users, and that became the thread’s central point of contention. Indeed, comment 3 showed that, separate from retail sales, there were more than 722,000 Game Pass upgrades, highlighting just how hard a simple comparison is. Notably, the same Alinea Analytics had, just days earlier, estimated sales of the PS5-exclusive title ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ at 1.9 million copies, and several posts in the thread questioned the consistency and reliability of these estimates.

  • Murakami Haruki Calls SNS a “Dumping Ground for Bad Writing” — 5ch Claps Back: “Worse Than Bathroom Graffiti”

A topic surfaced on 5ch after novelist Haruki Murakami was reported to have said, “I don’t do SNS because it’s a dumping ground for crappy writing.” In the thread, many voices agreed, saying things like “He’s dead right — it’s just people who can’t even fill a sheet of manuscript paper getting mad.” At the same time, others pointed out that the style of his landmark novel Hear the Wind Sing is itself built on short, colloquial sentences — practically “SNS-like” — and that it’s contradictory to call 5ch itself “bathroom graffiti” while only criticizing the writing on X (Twitter). Some even mocked a reply written with sloppy punctuation as “proof that the writing really is bad.”

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Murakami Haruki has long made clear his stance of keeping distance from SNS and contemporary, real-time information consumption, and this remark appears to be an extension of that stance. What split opinion in the thread was less the content of the remark itself than the question of “who has the standing to say it.” While there was considerable agreement with the view that SNS writing is of low quality, just as many replies questioned the credibility of criticizing others’ writing from that position — pointing out that his early landmark novel Hear the Wind Sing is itself written in a style built from short, colloquial sentences, and that 5ch itself openly calls itself an anonymous graffiti board. Note that the thread does not specify when or in which outlet this remark was made, and the original source cannot be confirmed from the material behind this article.

    Re: #62
More like people in their 20s.

Background and the Key Points of Debate

Momoiro Clover Z’s “Autumn Peach God Festival 2026” runs on a deal where MomoClo itself takes no appearance fee but keeps all the ticket revenue, while host Chōsei Village provides the land for free and covers infrastructure and security costs exceeding ¥100 million. The scale of that burden has already been discussed in other threads, and in this one it split posters into two camps: those defending it as justified by the economic benefit to the area, and those criticizing it as placing a heavier burden on a local government than any Hello! Project group imposes. The other point of contention was ticket sales — the thread title provocatively claims tickets “aren’t selling at all,” but the body notes general sales are still open via Eplus, and this thread alone doesn’t settle whether sales are genuinely weak or simply still available right after going on sale. Chōsei is also the only municipality in Chiba Prefecture still officially designated a “village,” and the fact that access requires a bus from Mobara Station is relevant context for thinking about turnout and local economic impact.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Sad News] MomoClo’s Peach God Festival, happening next week in Chōsei Village, Chiba, apparently isn’t selling tickets at all lol.”

  • Haruka Ayase’s new film flops with a mere ¥13 million opening day — “Tough for anyone but Toho” fans say

It’s been reported that ‘First Voice,’ the Haruka Ayase-starring film that opened on October 2, had a rough start, pulling in just ¥13 million at the box office on its first day. The film is a work of fiction inspired by Japan’s first harassment lawsuit, which took place in 1989, and reportedly scored a high 96.7% satisfaction rating in audience surveys — yet that praise never translated into actual ticket sales. On 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board, posters pointed out that the marketing leaned too heavily on the cast’s bubble-era fashion, creating an image disconnected from the film’s actual content, while others questioned whether Ayase herself still has real drawing power as an actress. The thread also touched on the broader structural issue of how films not distributed by Toho tend to struggle.

Haruka Ayase’s starring film shockingly underperforms — doing worse than a Daiki Shigeoka movie — as “hits are tough for anyone but Toho” becomes a harsh reality

“First Voice,” the Haruka Ayase vehicle that opened on October 2, is struggling at the box office.

The film is a work of fiction inspired by Japan’s first-ever harassment lawsuit, which took place in 1989 at the height of the bubble economy.

    Re: #3
Audience surveys recorded a 96.7% satisfaction rate and a 95.6% word-of-mouth recommendation score, and it's scoring well on review sites too (around 4.0 on sites like Eiga.com).
But the marketing pushed the cast's bubble-era fashion so hard that people got an impression totally disconnected from the actual content, and that scared audiences off.
To really get this film you need to understand the social atmosphere of the time and how hard life was for women back then — and the movie actually captures that beautifully.
This is a complete marketing failure, plain and simple.

Back in the day, the film industry and media used to say "idol movies don't make money."

Sorry to say it, but in the film industry Haruka Ayase's reputation is still just that of an "idol-type actress."

Old Kadokawa films starring Hiroko Yakushimaru or Tomoyo Harada were also "idol movies," but those worked because Kadokawa had Yakushimaru and Harada turn down all TV appearances, running a "if you want to see Harada or Yakushimaru, come to the theater" strategy — and it paid off.

Ayase's agency Horipro has no strategy like that, so unfortunately there's no way a movie starring an "idol-type actress" is going to pull in an audience.

I had no idea what they were going for with First Summer Uika's makeup in this.
If they wanted to cast First Summer Uika, they should've skipped that makeup.
And if she can't appear without that makeup, they should've just cast a different actress.
Her makeup wasn't this heavy in the NHK historical drama, was it?
    30AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:47

    Re: #115
Kind of cheap that Re: #1 doesn't even mention that Toei movie, huh.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“First Voice” is inspired by Japan’s first harassment lawsuit, which took place in 1989 during the bubble era, and its release scale and distribution setup differ from a major Toho production. The ¥13 million opening-day figure itself can look very different depending on how many theaters it played in, so it can’t simply be written off as a flat-out “flop.” Where the thread split was over whether to blame the struggle on the marketing approach (overemphasizing bubble-era fashion) or on Haruka Ayase’s own drawing power as an actress. The 96.7% satisfaction figure from the audience survey comes from the distributor’s own announcement — the article doesn’t specify the sample size or methodology, and it’s worth noting that it’s a separate metric from actual attendance numbers. The industry theory that “idol movies don’t hit,” illustrated with examples from Showa-era Kadokawa films, also has its limits when compared directly to today’s distribution and marketing environment.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Haruka Ayase’s starring film shockingly underperforms a Daiki Shigeoka movie… struggles with a ¥13 million opening-day gross, as “hits are tough for anyone but Toho” becomes a harsh reality.”

  • Wolverine’s User Score Drops to 6.6 After Another ~300-Review Purge — 5ch: “I Can’t Stop Laughing”

Sony’s new action game Wolverine has seen another big swing in its Metacritic user score. According to the thread’s original poster, roughly 300 reviews were mass-deleted, dropping the score to 6.6. Post #48 in the thread compiled an independent timeline of the score’s rise and fall — 6.4 → 6.7 → 6.3 → 7.1 → 6.6 — and some are now pointing out that the total number of deleted reviews has topped 1,000. Behind the story is talk that the game carries a 6-million-unit sales target tied to keeping its Marvel license, and opinions were split on whether it still makes sense to keep manipulating the score this long after launch.

I think honest, likable PlayStation users like this one disappearing is exactly why PlayStation's been struggling.

It's been mocked to death already, but I quit right at the opening scene where you pop both claws with R2+L2 — it felt way too childish.
The system is way too kiddie for the tone and visuals it's going for, it's a mess.
    76AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:32
They could just cut it loose.
Why do they need to hype this up so much anyway?

    Probably the Marvel contract.
    78AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:35
Once word gets around that the user score is being manipulated, it's just going to sell even worse — are Sony and the fanboys stupid or what.

    Re: #78
Maybe it's the same logic as a scam — if even a few people fall for it, it's a win.
Not something a legitimate company should be doing, though.

Then again, part of the blame is on a system that lets this slide even temporarily.
    102AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:22
If it were just handing out high scores to Shitsony (a derogatory nickname for Sony) titles, that'd be one thing,
but there's also a ton of trash that gives Microsoft's games low scores without exception.

    Background and Points of Debate

Metacritic’s user score system lets anyone post a review, which makes it prone to “review bombing” — a single person using multiple accounts to dump a batch of extreme scores at once. Because the operators detect unnatural posting patterns and delete them in bulk, scores swinging up and down over a short period isn’t unusual on its own, and some point out that similar mass deletions have happened with Nintendo titles too (post #13). What split the thread wasn’t the number swings themselves, but whether to focus on the “scale of the manipulation” or on “the game’s actual content.” The timeline in post #48 is just one user’s manual tracking of events over time, not an officially confirmed record. It’s also worth noting that the 6-million-unit quota and the terms of the Marvel contract are only hearsay within the thread — not information Sony or anyone involved has officially disclosed.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch Hardware/Industry board (commonly called “Geha”) thread “[Sad News] Sony’s Wolverine Has Another Mass Review Deletion, Score Drops to 6.6 😭“.

  • ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ Estimated at 6.16 Million Units Worldwide Sparks Debate on 5ch

Overseas outlet Game Business reported, citing figures compiled by research firm Ampere Analysis, that “Marvel’s Wolverine” had sold approximately 6.16 million units worldwide (about 95% digital). On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, the numbers kicked off comparisons with Nintendo titles’ sales figures, but the conversation quickly turned to the reliability of Ampere Analysis’s estimates themselves. Pointing to the firm’s estimate of 1.4 million units for “Death Stranding 2” — a number never officially confirmed in the publisher’s earnings reports — posters repeatedly argued that “this outfit’s analysis can’t be trusted,” and the thread devolved into everyone demanding sources from each other.

Overseas outlet The Game Business cited data from research firm Ampere Analysis showing the game sold roughly 6.16 million units worldwide, with physical copies making up 5% of that total.
    2AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:24
A decision has already been made that PlayStation games releasing from January 2028 onward will drop physical disc versions entirely; digital copies are said to already account for about 82% of full-game PlayStation software sales, with publishers like Capcom seeing around 90% digital.

Death Stranding 2, which this outfit's analysis claims sold 1.4 million copies.
And yet Death Stranding 2 wasn't even mentioned in the earnings report.
Don't forget — it got quietly written off without any official numbers, simply because it didn't sell.
    This place's analysis really can't be trusted…

    Re: #72
The guy who keeps misusing "pasokonga" (slangy/garbled way of saying "PC version") only ever shows up when stock's actually circulating, huh.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sales estimates from third-party research firms like Ampere Analysis are a different thing from the official figures publishers disclose in their earnings reports — they’re ultimately just estimates built on market data. The thread’s cited figure of 1.4 million units for “Death Stranding 2” doesn’t appear anywhere in Kojima Productions’ earnings materials either, and was brought up as an example of the gap between such estimates and actual disclosed results. Meanwhile, the claim in response 2 that “PlayStation software will drop physical disc versions starting January 2028” is an actual industry policy, not speculation, reflecting the fact that digital sales already make up 80-90% of the market. That said, the thread also saw an error where a development budget of “$30 billion” was really meant to be around “$300 million” — a good reminder that in these cross-platform sales-comparison threads, numbers tend to spread unchecked and take on a life of their own.
