  • “My Kid Came Home Starving From School Lunch,” Parent Says — Sapporo City: “Portions Haven’t Changed”

A post claiming that Sapporo City responded to a parent’s complaint — “my child came home from school hungry because of lunch” — with “there’s been no change in the portion size or nutritional content of school lunches” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. The photo of the lunch tray the parent shared spread widely after being compared to prison food, and the thread spiraled into a fact-check battle over whether real prison meals actually look like that. Opinions split between people who suspected the free-lunch program had shrunk the portions, those who argued you shouldn’t complain when it’s free, and others who pushed back that kids’ meals shouldn’t be the ones getting cut.

    Re: #21
    Disposable chopsticks? No way.
    Individually packaged condiments? No way.
Prison meals are legally fixed at one rice, one soup, two side dishes — so even the number of dishes is wrong.
A whole fish served intact? Never happens — the bones are always removed before serving. No tail either. They don't serve anything you can't eat as-is.

Are people seriously getting fooled into thinking this is real prison food?
    33AnonymousOct 10, 2026 12:35
They dropped Nipponham as the supplier, so now it's just two sausages like that cheap "Koukun"-style brand

School lunches are funded out of local government budgets, and once that budget is set it doesn't account for things like inflation afterward — which makes it an easy target for cuts.
Prison meals, on the other hand, are the national government's responsibility, and to avoid any liability issues, they end up serving surprisingly normal food just to make sure nothing goes wrong.

    School lunch in China
Chinese commenters: "That's way too little!!"
    https://funakamome.com/i/Rz11gYr.jpg

Background and Key Points of This Debate

While more municipalities across Japan are making school lunches free, the funding comes from single-year local government budgets that structurally struggle to keep pace with rising prices — making it an easy target for cuts. Prison meals, by contrast, are managed by the national government under the Act on Penal Detention Facilities, which sets a legal minimum standard of one rice dish, one soup, and two side dishes, making their quantity and quality comparatively stable. That institutional gap is the backdrop for the thread’s running joke that “prison food is actually the better meal.” That said, commenters repeatedly pointed out that the photo circulating as “prison food” likely isn’t the real thing, citing details like disposable chopsticks, individually packaged condiments, and a fish served with its bones still in — none of which match actual prison meals. As for the school lunch photo, there’s no way to confirm the circumstances it was taken in or whether that day’s menu was unusual (e.g., a fish-only day), so based on the information in this article alone, it’s impossible to say for certain whether the portions have really shrunk.

*This article is composed of excerpts and summaries from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Parent: “My kid came home starving” — City: “There’s been no change in the portion size or nutrients of school lunches” — Parent: “Look at this photo”.”

  • Giants’ Seiji Kobayashi Set to Announce Retirement After Climax Series — Batting .077, He’ll Become a Coach Next Season

Giants catcher Seiji Kobayashi (37) is set to announce his retirement once the Climax Series wraps up, with plans firming up for him to move into a coaching role next season. This year he appeared in just 20 games and batted a dismal .077, and with the DH rule set to arrive next season — expected to make Otsuka, Kishida, Kai, and Yamase the core of the catching corps — finding playing time had become an uphill battle. On 5ch’s “Live Everything G” thread, reactions split between fans welcoming the coaching move as recognition of his defense and blocking skills, and others delivering harsher verdicts citing his weak batting numbers and how he was used in the 2024 Climax Series.

    1AnonymousOct 10, 2026 11:30
With the DH coming in next season, it's basically locked in that the first-team catchers will rotate between Otsuka, Kishida, Kai, and Yamase.
They're gonna draft a few more catchers this year too, so there's no real need to keep Kobayashi around — he's pretty much set to become the battery coach in place of Sugiuchi, all for the new manager's sake.
    2AnonymousOct 10, 2026 11:31

Giants fans used to say: "Yamase was only hated by Abe — once Hashigami takes over it'll be Otsuka, Kishida, and Yamase, with Kai and Kobayashi banished to the minors." → Reality: even under Hashigami, Kai and Kobayashi still get priority and Yamase is the one banished to the minors. That's reality for you.

The funniest Kobayashi moment has got to be this one.

Satozaki: "Lots of people criticize catchers' pitch-calling, but pitches almost never go exactly as called — pitch-calling is all results-based judgment!!"

Same guy, Satozaki, commentating on a Giants game: "Kobayashi's pitch-calling is garbage!!!"
    84AnonymousOct 10, 2026 12:14
    Re: #68
Not sure which game this was, but recently there was some oddball call like a "nothing but fastballs and sliders with Raidel" restriction — if it gets the out, you might still grumble a little, but hey, it technically becomes "the right read." If he gets hit, though, it's just garbage, plain and simple.
    70AnonymousOct 10, 2026 12:03
He doesn't play much, but his defense alone is outstanding — isn't there a better way to use a guy like that?
    77AnonymousOct 10, 2026 12:07
    Re: #70
Well, the third-string catcher basically just sits around with no playing time anyway, so it makes sense to hand that role to a defense-first veteran.

Better to let the young guys actually get game reps down in the minors.
    72AnonymousOct 10, 2026 12:05
The era when this guy made the national team roster was wild, honestly.

    105AnonymousOct 10, 2026 12:27
    Re: #102
What exactly makes you think he's better than Kai?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The NPB is set to introduce the DH rule starting next season, and thread commenters see the Giants’ catching corps shaping up as a four-way competition between Takumi Otsuka, Yukiyo Kishida, Takuya Kai, and Shinnosuke Yamase. While Seiji Kobayashi has long drawn praise for his defense and blocking, his playing time itself was limited, and as his .077 batting average shows, adding value at the plate proved difficult. Opinions in the thread were divided: some welcomed his move into coaching as recognition of his defensive skill and contributions to the team, while others took a harsher line, pointing to how he was deployed in the 2024 Climax Series and arguing he’d “already been written off.” Also worth noting as backdrop to this personnel speculation is the expected departure of outfield/defense coach Hashigami (rendered simply as “Hashigami” in the original text).

  • US disrupts Chinese cyberattack tools — targets included Japanese airports

On October 8, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it had disrupted attack tools provided by Yongxin Zhicheng Technology Group, a China-based cybersecurity company. A Chinese government-backed hacking group is said to have used the tools to break into critical infrastructure, including U.S. power companies and Japanese airports, and Japan’s National Police Agency reportedly cooperated with the FBI and others in response. Which airport was targeted has not been disclosed. The 5ch thread drew a wide range of reactions — laments over the fragility of Japan’s cyber defenses, clashes over which side, the U.S. or China, Japan should stand with, and even theories pinning the real culprit on Russia or North Korea.

Background and key points of this story

This crackdown was carried out by the U.S. Department of Justice against hacking tools developed and provided by the Chinese company Yongxin Zhicheng Technology Group, and should be understood as a countermeasure against state-backed attack groups’ tactics for targeting critical infrastructure. The claim that Japanese airports were among the targets was reported only by Kyodo News, and no specific facility names or details of any damage have been made public. On the thread, frustration over Japan’s digital defense posture and debate over which side, the U.S. or China, Japan should align with erupted at the same time — but these are fundamentally separate issues, and care should be taken not to conflate the technical/legal measure of disrupting attack tools with the diplomatic question of where allegiance should lie. Also, because it typically takes time to grasp the full scope of damage from state-directed cyberattacks, today’s announcement may well be just the tip of the iceberg.

Partway through the thread, conversation drifted to Nanami Yanagawa, Dambara’s former activity partner, with some posters wondering how she’s doing these days.

At Dambara's age, even an average non-celebrity would likely own a bag around this price

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

According to posts in the thread, Rurune Dambara and Nanami Yanagawa are considered one of the few pairs to have joined Juice=Juice around the same time, which is why talk about the Miu Miu bag drifted into discussion of Yanagawa. Opinions split over how to read the price tag: some said “of course a celebrity can afford that,” while others more coolly noted “even an average person could own a bag at that price.” The thread also floated the theory that “Dambara might be a company president’s daughter,” but this too is purely a poster’s speculation with no supporting evidence. Readers should be careful not to take claims about the price or about members’ income and family backgrounds as confirmed fact.

※This article is a condensed summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Rurun Dambara Goes on a Date with Nanami Yanagawa.”

  • 5ch Divided Over ‘Action Game Tier List’ — Sekiro, DMC5 Rank Near the Top

A user on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board posted a self-made “action game tier list,” and the thread erupted into a mix of praise and criticism. While titles like Sekiro, Devil May Cry 5, and Ninja Gaiden 4 landed near the top, many posters argued the list was “skewed” since it left out Nintendo-style and 2D action titles such as Mario and Astro Bot. Others claimed the combat in Devil May Cry 5 and Bayonetta is “just one-sided attacking,” broadening the debate into a bigger argument over what should even count as a good action game in the first place.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, user-made game “tier lists” get posted fairly regularly, and arguments over biased selection criteria have become a running theme. This time, because the list was limited to action games specifically, opinions split over whether a high-difficulty one-on-one action game like Sekiro can even be judged on the same scale as combo-driven, spectacle-focused action games like Devil May Cry 5 and Bayonetta. Some also pointed out that excluding 2D/platformer action titles like Mario and Astro Bot suggests the criteria lean specifically toward “hardcore 3D action.” Since fan-made rankings like this tend to reflect the creator’s personal taste, they’re worth reading with the understanding that they aren’t an objective measure.

  • Giants Open Climax Series Under Acting Manager Hashigami, Eyeing First Title in 14 Years — 5ch: “Yoshinobu Would Work, But He and Hara Don’t Get Along”

On the 10th, the Yomiuri Giants entered the Climax Series under acting manager Hideki Hashigami, aiming for their first Japan Series title in 14 years against DeNA and Hanshin. On 5ch’s live-discussion threads, alongside same-day updates like Atsuhiro Inoue and Iori Yamazaki’s tune-up outings, opinions flew over Hashigami’s in-game decisions and his impending departure at season’s end. The conversation then shifted to the next manager, with posters suggesting that if Yoshinobu Takahashi took over, Hashigami or Hiroyuki Ibata could stay on as bench coach — though some doubted that would happen with chairman Tatsunori Hara in the picture. The second half of the thread turned nostalgic, debating the popularity and reputation of Giants alumnus Tatsuro Hirooka during his playing days.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Climax Series (CS) is a format in which the 2nd- and 3rd-place finishers from Japan’s Central and Pacific Leagues face off first, with the winner then taking on the pennant-winning club for the Japan Series title. The thread’s starting premise is that the Giants’ Shinnosuke Abe era is ending after this season, leaving coach Hideki Hashigami to run the team as acting manager through the Climax Series. With 14 years having passed since the team’s last Japan Series title, one point of discussion was the choice of next manager — an especially sensitive matter at the Giants, where it tends to hinge on alumni networks — which brought up both hopes for Yoshinobu Takahashi and concerns about his relationship with chairman Tatsunori Hara. On Tatsuro Hirooka, posters weighed his reputation as a brilliant defender against the harsher view that “he could only hit in his first year,” with some also comparing his popularity to that of his contemporary, Hanshin’s Yoshio Yoshida. These are evaluations grounded in on-field performance and results, and should be read as distinct from personal attacks.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hallo Pro board) thread “Giants Acting Manager 169.”

  • “Axe the School Milk, Spend It on Food Instead”: City Councilman’s Proposal Divides Opinion

“I’ve looked at school lunches all over the country, and milk is by far the biggest cost item — we should scrap it and put that money toward food instead,” proposed Daisuke Sugihara, an independent city councilman from Kadoma, Osaka Prefecture, in a social media post that sparked debate on 5ch. In the thread, some pointed out that milk is nearly the only drink that can meet Ministry of Education (MEXT) nutrition standards at low cost, and others warned that scrapping it would hit dairy farmers hard. Meanwhile, other posters called for consideration of kids who simply dislike milk or can’t tolerate it physically. The discussion also branched out into related topics like the safety of the margarine served at school lunches.

The idea that margarine is "edible plastic" isn't scientific fact — it's a false rumor (urban legend).

    • Mixed-up terminology: It comes from confusing the English word "plasticity" (the property of deforming easily under force) with synthetic "plastic."
    • Different chemistry: Plastic is a giant molecule humans can't digest, whereas margarine's ingredients are fatty acids the body can break down and metabolize.

It says 200ml right on it

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Under the School Lunch Act, Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) sets nutritional standards for school lunches, and milk has long been relied on as a stable, low-cost source of calcium and protein. Sugihara’s post calls for reallocating the food budget, but offers no concrete alternative menu or nutrition plan, which is why many on the thread pushed back with “propose a replacement menu before you say that.” The debate split largely into two camps: a financial question of whether milk is really squeezing school lunch budgets, and a nutritional question of whether milk is simply a matter of taste or an essential nutrient source. Concerns about the impact on the dairy industry, along with unverified claims about Sugihara’s past political stances, also came up in the thread — though it’s worth noting the latter is circulating without any confirmed backing.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Head of the ‘Association for a Brighter Future for Children’: ‘I’ve looked at school lunches nationwide — isn’t milk costing the most? We should scrap it and put that money toward food instead’.”

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mayumi Uchida was a member of AKB48’s 3rd generation, which debuted in 2006, and is known as the “original Janken Queen” for winning the center position at the first-ever Janken Tournament in 2010. She later drew further attention for activities outside of entertainment as well, including running a yakiniku restaurant. The theory repeated throughout the thread — that “only the first janken tournament was legit, and every one after that was rigged” — is a long-circulating rumor among fans, not something the group’s management has ever officially confirmed. The wave of comments saying people can’t identify her even with the “former AKB” label attached reflects the reality that 48 Group alumni now number in the hundreds, diluting individual name recognition. As for the marriage announcement itself, Uchida has not revealed any specific details about her partner, so it’s worth noting that the thread’s speculation is nothing more than guesswork.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Impersonator comedians have long been at the center of a “publicity rights” debate — how far it’s acceptable to use someone’s likeness and mannerisms without their consent — and several replies in the thread touched on this issue. This time, opinion split mainly over how to interpret the “I don’t respect them” line quoted in the report. Some took it as proof of the comedian’s poor character, while others pointed out that the article’s headline had dropped the preceding part of the quote — “EXILE doesn’t have enough appeal left these days to even bother doing an impression of” — and that the impression changes depending on context. RYO had also previously made news last September for attending the wake of singer Yukio Hashi, and that episode is believed to have influenced this retirement announcement as well. Taken at face value, the headline paints a simple picture of someone “getting ahead of himself and then lashing out when called on it,” but the thread raised doubts about how selectively the quote had been edited — and the gap in nuance between the headline and the full remark was one of the factors splitting opinion.

  • 76% of Elementary Schoolers Say They’re Self-Conscious About Looks — 5ch Clashes Over ‘Appearance Is a Mirror of the Heart’

A survey conducted by the Mainichi Elementary School Newspaper (Mainichi Shogakusei Shimbun) in June 2024 found that 76% of elementary school students said they were “concerned” about their own or others’ appearance. The finding comes against a backdrop of how deeply the term “lookism” — judging people by their looks — has permeated society. On 5ch, a thread saw clashing views: some backed the saying “appearance is a mirror of the heart,” while others questioned the very idea of linking looks to inner character. Opinions that basic grooming and dressing appropriately for the occasion (TPO) are simply necessary collided with criticism that “lookism” is just an excuse to justify attacks on people’s bodies and faces, and the discussion spiraled all the way out to what people value when choosing a marriage partner.

So I guess that means we're heading toward a world where you just pick your marriage partner by lottery (amidakuji) since anyone will do.

Even in manga and anime, the main character is good-looking and ends up with a cute girl. Heroes and heroines are never drawn with average looks, so this reaction is only natural. It's just common sense not to say something heartless to an actual human being, that's all.

About the only exception is the protagonist of Director Miyazaki's Spirited Away. In 99% of other works, the main character is a cute girl or a handsome guy.

Leading society down a worse, easier path is exactly what bad people do, isn't it?

Honestly, most fat people are selfish and self-centered.

You pretty much never hear about a fat person with a good personality.

The right approach is for the people around them to correct it by saying "That's ugly! Keep that up and your heart will turn ugly too!" Giving them an excuse like "lookism" is the worst possible move.

Here's the hard part: say Man A earns about 30 million yen a year, is handsome, and even after marriage stays popular with women — so there's always that worry. Man B doesn't come with that worry. Which one would you marry?

Not even a hard question, it's A. Spending your life with someone who's not your type is just rough, plain and simple.

Though obviously that doesn't apply if B happens to be your type.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“Lookism” is a concept that originated in the United States in the 1970s, a term that treats judging and sorting people by appearance as a form of discrimination alongside race and gender. In Japan, it has spread in recent years mainly through social media, and this survey’s results were reported as evidence of how far the concept has taken hold. However, it’s easy to overlook that answering “concerned” is not the same as having actually experienced bullying or discrimination — it merely expresses interest in or anxiety about appearance. The clash within the thread also largely comes down to a mismatch between those who treat lookism as a principle that “people shouldn’t be hurt over how they look” and those with the practical stance that “judging appearance is only natural within the bounds of basic grooming and dressing for the occasion (TPO).” Because neither side has agreed on a definition of what actually counts as lookism, the two sides are often talking past each other even while using the same word.
