  • What Ever Happened to the ‘Principality of Zeon’? The Surprising Successor Nation That Rose From the Ashes of ‘Side 3’

A thread sparked by a MAGMix article, “What Happened to the Principality of Zeon After the War Ended,” has been blowing up on 5ch’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board. Posters traded notes on how Zeon, defeated by the Federation in the One Year War, kept reinventing itself afterward — surviving through the Delaz Fleet, Axis, and Neo Zeon before the Zabi bloodline finally died out with Mineva Lao Zabi. A flurry of replies worked to connect the dots between the leaders who came after Char’s Counterattack and later works like Crossbone Gundam, piecing together the “postwar history” that the mainline story never spells out.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In the Mobile Suit Gundam universe, the Principality of Zeon is set up to have survived as an independent state even after surrendering to the Federation in the One Year War. The TV series itself never depicts what happened afterward, but that history has gradually been filled in piece by piece through side stories like Char’s Counterattack and various games and novels. The thread’s discussion of the Delaz Conflict, the rise and fall of Neo Zeon, and the Zabi bloodline ending with Mineva Lao Zabi are all built on that accumulated side-story lore. Where the replies didn’t quite line up with each other comes down to the fact that even fans don’t agree on which side stories or which timeline should count as ‘official’ — the answer shifts depending on how you read the chronology across different works. It’s also easy to get confused if you don’t know that cases like Crossbone Gundam and the V Gundam side story have their release order reversed from their in-universe chronological order.

  • No. 1 ‘Aibou,’ No. 2 ‘Bayside Shakedown,’ No. 3 ‘Who’s the Dangerous Cop!?’: 300 People Rank the Most Memorable Detective Dramas

TRILL surveyed 300 men and women nationwide, ages teens through 70s, on the “most memorable detective drama,” and the results blew up on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board. No. 1 was “Aibou,” often called “the pinnacle of detective dramas,” followed by No. 2 “Bayside Shakedown” and No. 3 “Who’s the Dangerous Cop!?” In response, the thread filled with support for Showa- and Heisei-era shows like “Deka Kizoku” (Detective Aristocrat), “Taiyo ni Hoero!” (Bark at the Sun!), “Seibu Keisatsu” (Western Police), and “Hagure Keiji Junjouha” (The Maverick Detective), with some pointing out “it’s only popular because it’s still on air” — and the fact that everyone’s picks varied wildly by generation became a big part of the debate.

    TRILL, Oct. 13

Watching a detective drama, it’s often not just the twists of the case that pull you in — it’s the banter between characters and the lines that stick with you afterward. For shows that have stayed beloved over the years, those memories are often tangled up with watching as a family, or catching reruns again and again.

This time we surveyed 300 people nationwide, ages teens through 70s, on which detective drama left the biggest impression on them. The responses reveal exactly why each show has stuck in so many people’s memories. Take a look — the results might have you nodding along.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Detective dramas trace back to the 1970s with Taiyo ni Hoero! (Bark at the Sun!) and Seibu Keisatsu (Western Police), followed by Abu Deka (Who’s the Dangerous Cop!?) and Deka Kizoku (Detective Aristocrat) in the ’80s and Bayside Shakedown in the ’90s, with Aibou establishing itself as the long-running staple from the 2000s onward. This time’s No. 1, Aibou, scores high on name recognition largely because of how long it’s run and the fact that new seasons are still being made — a point the thread picked up on, with comments like “it’s only known because it’s still on air.” Meanwhile, support for shows like Deka Kizoku and Taiyo ni Hoero split clearly along generational lines, and the very criteria people used to judge the shows — whether there’s real deduction involved, or how deep the human drama runs — also differed by generation, which is part of why the discussion kept talking past itself. Note that the original article doesn’t break down the exact vote counts.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “No. 2 ‘Bayside Shakedown,’ No. 3 ‘Who’s the Dangerous Cop!?’ — 300 People Pick the ‘Most Memorable Detective Drama,’ with No. 1 Called ‘the Pinnacle of Detective Dramas’.”

  • Shohei Ohtani strikes out on 3 pitches in first at-bat — 5ch: ‘His eyesight must be going’

In Game 2 of the NL Championship Series between the Dodgers and Brewers (October 12, 2026, Milwaukee), Shohei Ohtani struck out swinging after being thrown three straight fastballs in his first at-bat. Despite being held hitless early, the Dodgers took the lead behind strong pitching from Yoshinobu Yamamoto and others, putting them in control of the game. On 5ch, Ohtani’s slump drew a wave of reactions, split between those pointing to declining bat speed and failing dynamic vision, and those calling it just a temporary rough patch. His recent batting line — “106 plate appearances without a home run, a .188 average, a .504 OPS” — was also cited, fueling concern that the slump was dragging on.

    Looking at the pitch sequencing,
they clearly see him as a safe bet now (like a harmless tile in mahjong),
he's being completely looked down on.
    48AnonymousOct 13, 2026 06:47
If it comes down to Ohtani with a chance to deliver, pinch-hitting is the only option. If they can't do that, it's elimination.
    49AnonymousOct 13, 2026 06:47
That first at-bat was brutal to watch.
Are they really going to let him bat every time?
    51AnonymousOct 13, 2026 06:47
    @
Didn't even offer at it — that used to be a home run pitch too. Has Ohtani really declined?

    @
Guess Ohtani's eyesight really has started going out of nowhere, huh.

    @
Ohtani might genuinely be declining. I'd even say he can't see the ball properly. It's crazy that he's still batting cleanup, but given how much he's getting paid, the team's probably just going down with their star.

    @
Ohtani's decline is definitely his eyes. He's not seeing the ball at all.

If it's declining dynamic vision, no amount of rest will fix it.
Who'd have thought his eyes would give out at 32.

Ichiro took insanely good care of his eyes, which is how he lasted until 40, but I figured Ohtani's would at least hold up until around 35.
    100AnonymousOct 13, 2026 06:58
So his actual bat speed has dropped, huh.
No wonder he can't make contact then.

    Re: #100
He's whiffing on fastballs because his bat speed has dropped, probably.

Background and key points of this discussion

Shohei Ohtani has been stuck in a batting slump throughout this postseason, and the stat line cited in the thread — “106 plate appearances without a home run, a .188 average, a .504 OPS” — shows a situation well beyond a temporary rough patch. Opinions in the thread split over the cause, with some pointing to declining dynamic vision or age-related decline, and others attributing it to technical issues like reduced bat speed or mistimed timing on his load. It’s worth noting that none of this is a medical diagnosis — it’s all speculation by fans based on what they’re seeing at the plate. Some posts went as far as tying the slump to his motivation or his future contract situation, but that too is speculation drawn from the game results, not a fact about his actual intentions or the team’s plans.

  • Judgment Hits Steam’s Biggest-Ever Discount — 75% Off at ¥745 — 5ch: ‘Best One in the Series, No Contest’

Judgment (Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yogen), the hit game starring Takuya Kimura, is on sale on Steam at an all-time low of 75% off — just ¥745. The original story comes from Denfaminicogamer. In a thread on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board, alongside reactions to the sale itself, users compared this game’s quality to its sequel Lost Judgment, with some pointing out that the series’ quality seems to track directly with how involved director Toshihiro Nagoshi is — opinions on the game itself were split.

Honestly, I wish they’d priced it at ¥754 instead.

A fully microtransaction'd Kimutaku is just a minor gag at best.
More importantly, the main story is genuinely great — before you know it, you end up liking Kimutaku.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Judgment is a spin-off of the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series, known for its live-action-style presentation starring Takuya Kimura. After one of the original cast members was arrested on drug charges, the first game has continued to be sold with that actor’s face and voice replaced by another performer — which is what the thread’s exchange of “Bring back Pierre” and “There’s a mod for that” is referring to. As for the sequel, Lost Judgment, opinions were split over its story and its handling of the character Professor Sawa, with fans divided between favoring the first game and favoring the second. The thread also shared the view that the series’ quality hinges on how involved director Toshihiro Nagoshi is. Note that this sale marks an all-time low specifically for the Steam version — a distinction from physical copies or prices on other storefronts that readers may easily conflate.

  • Horiemon Says Even Top Universities Are ‘No-Names’ Back Home — Yes, Even Tokyo Tech and Hitotsubashi

Entrepreneur Takafumi Horie (53) argued on his X (formerly Twitter) account by October 12 that even graduates of elite universities like Tokyo Institute of Technology and Hitotsubashi University go unrecognized in his hometown of Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The 5channel thread this sparked saw users split over how a region’s unfamiliarity with certain schools shapes local families’ attitudes toward education, and over just how far a university’s name recognition really extends nationwide. Also drawing attention was Horie’s own account of why he chose the University of Tokyo — by his own admission, it was “a way to win over his ignorant parents.”

That "Tokyo Tech vs. Shinshu University" copypasta (a famous online joke about parents mixing up the two schools) isn't even a joke, it's real.
So there were probably plenty of families where even a top school wouldn't get tuition money if the parents didn't recognize the name.

This is about people who never even went to college, out in the countryside.
In this case, that'd be Horie's parents (though there's no way to know what level of education his parents actually have).

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Horie’s hometown, Yame City in Fukuoka Prefecture, is a regional city with a population of around 20,000 — an area where information about universities doesn’t circulate as readily as it does in the greater Tokyo area. Tokyo Institute of Technology merged with Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 2024 and was renamed “Institute of Science Tokyo,” and within the thread both the old and new names are used interchangeably, which can be confusing for readers. The thread split mainly over where to draw the line on name recognition: some argued that only Todai, Kyoto University, and Waseda/Keio count as “nationally known,” while others insisted that elite national universities like Hitotsubashi and Tokyo Tech should obviously be known too. The anecdote about Horie choosing Tokyo University as “a way to win over his ignorant parents” also came up — this is something Horie has written about in his own books, and it’s worth keeping in mind as context outside the thread itself.

Background and key points of this discussion

This kind of “show bento” is a familiar composition when actresses and other celebrities post to social media, and it doesn’t necessarily reflect their actual food intake. As one reply (#51) pointed out, given the physical demands of filming, it’s normal to assume she eats more elsewhere, and the pink lunchbox was most likely just shot as a photogenic snapshot. The thread split between those startled by how small it looked and those who calmly noted that of course it looks that way since it’s made for show — the discussion further expanded into a broader debate about how much female celebrities, and women in general, typically eat. Some unverified hearsay about other celebrities’ past eating habits and health also appeared in the thread, but since none of it came from official statements and lacked any backing, it has not been included in this article.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Actress Keiko Kitagawa’s homemade bento causes a stir: “Huh?!”, “This bento is so small it’s depressing”, “Keiko Kitagawa’s lunchbox is smaller than my 4-year-old’s”“.

  • Win10 security updates free until October 2027 — 5ch: ‘There’s still a lot of Win10 users out there’

Windows 10’s mainstream support ended on October 14, 2025, but in addition to the $30/year paid ESU (Extended Security Updates) program, Microsoft is offering a free enrollment option for home users and small offices, delivering critical security updates through October 2027. The target is tens of millions to hundreds of millions of PCs that can’t meet Windows 11’s requirements, such as TPM 2.0 support and eligible CPU generations. On 5ch’s News Express+ board, the topic drew over 40 replies, with discussion ranging from being stuck on old CPUs that block the upgrade to 11, to differences in memory usage compared to Macs, nostalgia for older Windows versions, and frustration with Microsoft’s development practices.

Support for “Windows 10” officially ended about a year ago, on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs running with default settings no longer receive the monthly critical security updates from the “Windows Update” servers. However, if enrolled in the “Extended Security Updates” (ESU) program, Microsoft will keep delivering updates to the OS even after its support end date.

When Microsoft first announced ESU for Windows 10, it had planned to charge $30 for a one-year subscription. But the company came to realize that many consumer PC owners weren’t prepared, willing, or financially able to replace their old computers, and also weren’t willing to pay $30 for an ESU subscription — so a few months before the support end date, it announced a “free enrollment option.”

This free ESU subscription is available for PCs running “Windows 10 Home” or “Windows 10 Pro” in homes and small offices. It covers the tens of millions to hundreds of millions of consumer PCs that can’t get the free upgrade to “Windows 11” because they don’t meet the compatibility requirements.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Windows 10’s mainstream support ended on October 14, 2025, but shortly before that deadline, Microsoft added a free home-user enrollment option to the ESU (Extended Security Updates) program it had originally priced at $30 per year. It covers personal and small-office use of Windows 10 Home/Pro, delivering critical updates through October 2027. The backdrop is that tens of millions to hundreds of millions of PCs still can’t meet Windows 11’s requirements, such as TPM 2.0 support and eligible CPU generations. In the thread, opinions split between frustration that an unsupported CPU blocks the jump to 11, and comments pointing out that security requirements like TPM 2.0 are the real reason. There’s also a correction worth flagging: the claim that “Windows 10 was supposed to be the last OS” was actually meant as “the last Windows brand” — a mix-up that’s easy for readers to fall into too. It’s also worth remembering that the free ESU is only a time-limited measure through October 2027, not a permanent move to free updates.

A thread titled “You can flex just by living in Tokyo, so why don’t you all move there?” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo (Live News) board. Tokyo residents and people from the provinces went back and forth over livability, with posters throwing out land prices in central areas like Shinjuku and Ginza, plus homeownership rates, car ownership rates, and single-household rates in Toshima, Shibuya, and Minato wards. One poster’s defense—”I’m not living here to flex”—was met with the comeback “But that contradicts the thread title, doesn’t it?” Plenty of voices also questioned the appeal of Tokyo life altogether, citing sky-high rent, cramped housing, and safety concerns.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This thread is one of the recurring “Tokyo flex” controversies that pop up on 5ch, following the typical pattern of posts looking down on the provinces because of central Tokyo residency, met with pushback. What stood out this time was that, beyond pure emotional arguments, multiple posters backed their points with concrete figures—land prices in Shinjuku and Ginza, and homeownership, car ownership, and single-household rates in Toshima, Shibuya, and Minato wards. That said, none of these figures came with cited sources within the thread, so they shouldn’t be taken as more than posters’ own claims. Some pointed out that areas east of Kichijoji within the 23 wards clearly have higher land prices than regional hub cities, while Akiruno and Hachioji are actually cheaper—highlighting the risk of lumping all of “Tokyo” together. In the end, posters never agreed on whether living there is about flexing or a rational lifestyle choice, and the debate stayed at a standoff.

  • Ranking of Industries With the Most High Earners (Over ¥8 Million/Year) — #1 Comes In at a Staggering 47.2%

A ranking of industries with the highest share of workers earning over ¥8 million a year, based on the FY2025 Survey on Private Sector Salary Conditions, is making waves online. The top spot goes to the electricity, gas, heat supply, and water industry at 47.2%, followed by finance and insurance at 31.7%. Meanwhile, the lowest-ranked industry comes in at just 2.8%, highlighting a huge gap between sectors. Reactions on the thread were split depending on where people stood: some pointed out that “¥8 million today, with inflation, is only worth about what ¥5 million was before COVID,” others cited data showing civil servants’ salaries overtake private-sector pay from their 40s onward, and still others bragged about their income by naming specific industries, drawing a mix of envy and skepticism.

The industry with the highest proportion of high earners making over ¥8 million a year is “electricity, gas, heat supply, and water utilities.” Among its 181,000 salaried workers, the share earning over ¥8 million reaches 47.2% — meaning nearly half fall into the high-income bracket (related article: “[Ranking] The Share of Workers Earning Over ‘¥8 Million’ and ‘¥10 Million’ by Industry — Including Average Salaries by Sector 〈FY2025 Survey on Private Sector Salary Conditions〉”).

The electricity/gas industry also posted a 29.9% share of workers earning over ¥10 million a year. The high profitability that comes with supporting critical infrastructure underpins this high-level pay structure.

Ranked second is “finance and insurance.” Among its 1,295,000 salaried workers, 31.7% earn over ¥8 million a year. The share earning over ¥10 million is also high at 20.0% — meaning one in five workers reaches that milestone. The average salary here is ¥7.26 million.

Hotels are basically yield-generating investment products, you know

Between a foreign luxury hotel charging over ¥100,000 a night and a cheap business hotel,

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This ranking is drawn from the National Tax Agency’s “Survey on Private Sector Salary Conditions,” using figures limited to salaried employees who went through year-end tax adjustment — it excludes self-employed people such as farmers and private-practice doctors. That’s why the low rankings for agriculture/forestry/fisheries and medical/welfare don’t directly reflect poor treatment across those entire industries. Meanwhile, the high rankings for electricity/gas and finance/insurance largely come down to industry structure: these sectors are dominated by large companies with limited competition due to infrastructure control and licensing requirements, which allows for stable bonus and base-salary structures. The recurring claim in the thread that “¥8 million no longer makes you a high earner” reflects the price increases since around 2020, and holds up as a fair point that nominal annual income alone doesn’t capture actual living standards.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[Latest 2026] Ranking of Industries With the Most “High Earners Over ¥8 Million” — The Reality: #1 Is 47.2%, Dead Last Just 2.8%“.

  • People Who Never Touch X or LINE at All — Do They Actually Get By Fine? 5ch: ‘They’re Free, Which Is Exactly Why They Scare Me’

A thread starter’s question — “I’ve genuinely never used either X or LINE, but do I actually need them?” — split opinion on the Nanimo Jikkyo (Live/News Commentary) board. Against the poster’s own stance of “it’s fine not to use them” and “I’m not struggling at all,” other users fired back with “it’s the people around you who end up struggling” and “it makes group messages more of a hassle,” pointing out that even if the person themselves isn’t inconvenienced, everyone around them is. The discussion then spread further, touching on otaku culture during the flip-phone-to-smartphone transition, a real example of an older coworker who refuses LINE at work and only accepts paper documents, and a generational divide in which younger people don’t even exchange phone numbers anymore, staying connected purely through Instagram DMs.

This kind of thing used to happen a lot with annoying otaku types back when everyone was switching from flip phones to smartphones
Everyone else is connected through LINE or some other app, and you're the one lone holdout making things messy and annoying
People rarely call this out because guys who can't read the room like this tend to get defensive and snap back, so the people around them just quietly suffer — it's kind of sad
Even if YOU'RE fine with it, the people around you aren't — if you can't sense that without being told, you're done for

There was a time when LINE got so widespread that people started saying young folks don't even exchange phone numbers anymore. But now it's gone even further — they trade Instagram handles instead, so it's totally normal to not know someone's phone number OR their LINE
It kind of feels like LINE has taken over the role phone numbers and carrier email used to have, and now it's being replaced in turn

    Email attachments, basically

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

LINE launched in 2011 under NAVER (now LINE Yahoo) and has since become firmly established in Japan as the standard way people stay in touch one-on-one, with government agencies and companies also using it for notifications. The thread’s disagreement came down to a difference in perspective — whether the user themselves is inconvenienced versus whether the people around them are. The discussion kept talking past itself, with the original poster insisting “I’m not having any problems” while others complained that it makes group communication more of a hassle. There was also a notable point that “young people today don’t even exchange phone numbers or LINE IDs anymore — they connect purely through Instagram DMs,” which points to a generational shift where the dominant means of communication is moving on even from LINE itself. That nuance — that LINE isn’t really a simple “use it or don’t” question anymore — is useful background that doesn’t come through from the thread exchange alone.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nanimo Jikkyo G) thread “Do I actually need X or LINE? I’ve genuinely never used either.”
