  • Mystery Chants Take Over 5ch: ‘See No Bread, Speak No Bread, Hear No Bread’

In a chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live Commentary General) board, users traded a nonstop stream of nonsensical call-and-response chants like “see no bread, speak no bread, hear no bread,” along with a flood of Funassyi-style pear-mascot images.

In between, the thread veered wildly off-topic — gripes demanding higher welfare payments, jokes reminiscent of the comedy duo Tetsu and Tomo, and other completely unrelated tangents.

    Background and Key Points

5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board is a live-commentary space where users post in real time while watching TV, sports, or streams — closer in spirit to a Twitch chat than a discussion forum, which is why threads like this one exist purely to flood the page with in-jokes rather than debate anything. The chant “see no bread, speak no bread, hear no bread” is a pun on the classic three-wise-monkeys proverb (mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru — “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”), swapping “evil” for “pan” (bread) purely for the rhythm. Funassyi, the pear mascot flooding the thread in image form, is an unofficial character created to promote Funabashi City in Chiba Prefecture; it became a nationwide phenomenon around 2013 for its manic, unscripted energy, which is exactly the tone this thread is imitating.

There’s no real argument in this thread — it’s chat noise — but the one moment resembling disagreement is buried in the welfare tangent: one poster complains that living costs demand seikatsu hogo (welfare) payments of 200,000 yen, and another pushes back by asking whether they’d already received Japan’s periodic rinji kyufukin, the one-off cash relief payments the government issues during inflationary spikes. That’s a real policy distinction — ongoing welfare benefits versus temporary supplemental payouts — that the thread never resolves.

What outside readers will likely miss is that none of this is a genuine political or cultural discussion; it’s the digital equivalent of chanting along at a stadium, and the off-topic detours (Hololive, comedy-duo callbacks to Tetsu and Tomo’s “why is that” bit) are the point, not a distraction from it.

  • Saitama Railroad Crossing Trap: Police ‘Can’t Confirm Tailgating’ — 5ch: ‘If He Trapped Him On Purpose, That’s Attempted Murder’

At a railroad crossing in Saitama Prefecture, a man who works for JAF and was driving ahead has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly trapping the car behind him inside the crossing in an attempt to have it hit by a train. Saitama Prefectural Police say they “have not been able to confirm any tailgating,” but it has also come to light that dashcam footage shows the man pulling his own car away only after watching the crossing barrier come down all the way. On 5ch, opinions are split over whether the trapping was intentional, or whether the car behind had been tailgating him first.

He allegedly trapped the car behind him inside the railroad crossing so it couldn’t get out, in an attempt to have it collide with a train and kill the male driver. On the 19th, Saitama Prefectural Police’s Iwatsuki Station arrested Kenichi Kato (52), an organization employee living in Magome, Hasuda City, in the same prefecture, on suspicion of attempted murder. According to investigative sources, Kato works for the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), which provides roadside assistance and similar services. Kato denies any intent to kill, saying “I didn’t mean to kill him,” and claims “I was the one being tailgated.” Meanwhile, a relative said dejectedly, “I’m the one who’d like to know what happened.”

The incident occurred at around 5:25 p.m. on the 18th. According to a Saitama Prefectural Police announcement, the scene was a railroad crossing on the Tobu Noda Line, between Shichiri and Iwatsuki stations.

According to investigative sources, immediately after crossing the tracks, Kato stopped his car and left the vehicle driven by the male victim (56), who was following behind, unable to get out of the crossing. Kato then reportedly got out of his car, walked over to the victim’s vehicle, and warned him about things like “you’re following too close.” When the crossing’s warning alarm began to sound, he is said to have returned to his own car.

Normally, you only enter a crossing after confirming the car ahead has cleared and there's enough space for you to get through too — so unless someone's tailgating you from behind, there's no way you'd end up stopped inside the crossing in the first place.

The car in front couldn't move because it was stuck in traffic — the idea that he was deliberately blocking him is off to begin with.
If anything, the driver who pulled in behind him while traffic was clearly backed up is the idiot.
Same as at intersections — you get idiots who pull in even when it's obviously jammed ahead and then start honking.

    Background and Key Points

JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) is the country’s main roadside-assistance body, a quasi-public organization most Japanese drivers know as the AAA equivalent that tows cars and jump-starts batteries — which is why posters found it notable that the suspect works there: a road-safety professional is accused of using a level crossing as a weapon. Japan’s Road Traffic Act explicitly forbids entering a crossing unless the driver can confirm the far side is clear enough for their own car to get all the way through, precisely because being trapped between the barriers as a train approaches is a known cause of fatal accidents. “Tailgating” (aori unten) became its own aggravated offense after a highly publicized 2017 Tomei Expressway case, where a driver forced another car to stop in a live lane, leading to a fatal rear-end collision — a case posters invoke directly as the closest precedent for “aggressive driving treated as equivalent to murder.”

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t whether trapping someone in a crossing is dangerous — everyone agrees it is — but whether the suspect was defending himself against a tailgater or manufacturing the entrapment, since police have not corroborated Kato’s tailgating claim while his own dashcam shows him waiting for the barrier to fully close before easing away.

What the discussion glosses over is that both drivers may have technically violated the same crossing-entry rule regardless of tailgating, and that “no confirmed tailgating” from police is a statement about current evidence, not an exoneration — intent for the attempted-murder charge hinges on the deliberate delay, not on who caused the initial pile-up.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary from the 5ch (Breaking News Plus) thread “[Saitama Crossing Trapping] Police: ‘Can’t Confirm Tailgating’ — Dashcam Shows Him Pulling Away Only After Barrier Fully Closed, Also Under Investigation for Endangering Train Traffic.”

    Background and Key Points

Ishida Ayumi’s “J.P Room” is Hello! Project’s brand for individually themed 2027 desk calendars covering a shared 12-member roster, most of them drawn from Morning Musume ’25 and Juice=Juice, the agency’s two flagship groups. Solo H!P calendars have long been a fan-economy staple — merch sold via each member’s own team or “calendar division” (like the Hagoromo account handling Sasaki Rikako’s release), often bundled with in-store or online autograph events, since fans treat calendar sales and event turnout as informal popularity rankings. Ishida herself, along with Fukumura, Sato, Morito, Miyamoto, Uemura, and Inaba, already has an established solo-calendar track record, which is part of why posters immediately started cross-checking who’s in and who’s still missing.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t the calendar itself but the optics around it: whether J.P Room, as a shared 12-person product, undercuts or gets undercut by members’ individual solo calendars announced in the same window — Sasaki Rikako’s solo release dropped almost simultaneously, and posters debated whether joint products like this only sell when paired with solo ones, whether cramming 12 members into one release invites unflattering popularity comparisons, and whether splitting event slots by subgroup could hide those gaps.

What outside readers will likely miss is that “solo calendar” isn’t a formality — it’s a revenue and popularity signal within the idol economy, and members without one (like Miyazaki, Takeuchi, Koseki, Asakura per the thread) are read by fans as a gap worth noting, not neutral. The thread never explains why 12 members specifically were chosen for J.P Room, leaving the group’s actual selection criteria unaddressed.

  • “I’ll Kill You Right Here”: Woman in Her 20s Seriously Injured in Wrong-Way Crash in Itako, Ibaraki — 38-Year-Old Man Rearrested on Attempted Murder Charges

A 38-year-old man has been rearrested on suspicion of attempted murder over a wrong-way driving crash that occurred in July in Itako, Ibaraki Prefecture. He allegedly threatened the female victim with a metal bat after the collision, leaving her with serious injuries including fractures. Wonder how the insurance is going to work out. This is just too awful for her.

    Background and Key Points

I’ll kill you right here”: Woman in her 20s seriously injured — man rearrested on attempted murder.

The framework here matters: under Japan’s Road Traffic Act, driving on the wrong side of a two-way road is a straightforward violation, but this case escalated to attempted murder (satsujin misui) because prosecutors allege intent to kill, evidenced by the man’s verbal threat and his use of a metal bat after the crash — Japan classifies assault with such a weapon and clear homicidal statements as far more serious than a traffic accident alone, which is why this went from a car-crash report to a rearrest on a violent-crime charge. Dashcam footage, now common in Japanese vehicles largely because of a string of “road rage” (aori unten) cases since around 2017 that led to a 2020 law specifically criminalizing dangerous obstructive driving, is what let the public and posters actually see the sequence rather than rely on the man’s account.

Where the thread actually splits is over motive: several posters (post 91-92) floated the theory that the man never realized he himself was driving the wrong way, believed the woman had caused the crash, and lashed out to avoid looking weak — a reading that reframes his aggression as panicked face-saving rather than premeditated malice, versus other posters treating the threat and bat as evidence of straightforward violent intent. Separately, a chunk of the thread drifts into generational riffing (ice-age job-market cohort, yutori generation cutoffs) that never gets resolved and isn’t really about the case.

What’s likely to be missed: nothing in the thread addresses whether the man had any prior driving or criminal record, or how Japan’s at-fault insurance system (posts 38, 43, 136) will actually apply given that attempted murder, if convicted, sits outside ordinary jiko (accident) insurance frameworks — meaning the victim’s compensation path may depend far more on the man’s personal assets than any auto policy.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “38-year-old man says “I’ll kill you right here” and rams his car, driving the wrong way, into a car driven by a woman in her 20s — is this seriously Japan?“

    Re: #122
Cammy looks like she has a lot of freedom, but once you actually play her she feels stifling and weak.

    Background and Key Points

Zangief has been Street Fighter’s designated joke pick since the earliest games — a slow, no-projectile grappler whose entire kit is built around eating chip damage to land a command grab, and for most of the series’ 35-plus-year history he sat at or near the bottom of tournament tier lists precisely because that playstyle punishes any mistake severely while offering little reward against a competent opponent who just runs away. Street Fighter 6, released by Capcom in 2023, changed the equation with its Drive system and rebalanced grapple mechanics, and Zangief has consistently shown up near the top of the game’s usage-rate charts ever since — a genuine reversal that surprised even longtime players in the thread.

The actual disagreement in the thread wasn’t about whether Zangief’s numbers are real — nobody disputed the data — but about what the numbers mean. One camp (post 67) argued high usage doesn’t equal high strength: Zangief simply has an unusually loyal fanbase that keeps picking him regardless of win rate, so usage rate is measuring devotion, not power. Nobody in the thread offered hard win-rate data to settle it either way, so the thread ends in disagreement rather than resolution.

What’s likely to trip up readers unfamiliar with Capcom’s roster history is the Terry Bogard tangent: he did not originate in Street Fighter as a playable fighter. The “Street Fighter 1 Terry” claim refers to an unused/background design sketch that only appears on a title screen, later repurposed when SNK built Fatal Fury (Garou Densetsu) as a spin-off using Capcom’s leftover concept art — a well-known but easily garbled piece of trivia, and the thread’s discussion of it (posts 53, 71) already contains some confusion between “concept origin” and “he was a cut playable character.”

  • JAF Worker Stops After Being Tailgated, Trapping Car Behind at Railroad Crossing — Arrest Sparks 5ch Blame Debate

A JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) rescue vehicle, after being tailgated, stopped just past a railroad crossing — leaving the car behind it trapped inside the crossing. The JAF employee was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. On 5ch, opinion is split between those who say “the following car shouldn’t have entered the crossing until the car ahead had cleared it” and those who say “the fault lies with the tailgater who closed the gap.”

Proving intent to kill seems like a stretch.
Even if they can establish he was aware he was damaging the car,
you still can't rule out the possibility that he assumed the victim himself would get out and escape (which is exactly what happened).

"I already felt like the car behind me was crowding me, and when it kept crowding me even at the crossing, I was sure it was deliberate tailgating, so I went to complain" —
that story does hold together to some degree.
    44AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:51
    Re: #39
Goes without saying what happens if you leave a car stuck on the tracks in that state, right?
    56AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:55
His parents' house is just before the crossing, and he was heading there when he got tailgated! So maybe he got so angry he thought, "I'll trap him on the tracks"?

"From the point in the footage where the gap between suspect Kato's car and the victim's car starts closing, it's about a one-minute drive to the crossing. Suspect Kato's parents' house sits even before the crossing at the scene, so the gap with the victim's car may have closed when he slowed down to turn off toward his parents' place."
    58AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:56
    Re: #56
So 400m before the scene, there was a normal amount of following distance.

    > A car believed to be suspect Kato's, traveling about 400 meters before the scene.
Ten seconds later, a car believed to be the victim's can also be seen.
    57AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:55

You see it practically every day.
    61AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:58
    Re: #57
The penalties are already fairly harsh — it's proving it that's hard.
    63AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:59
    When he got trapped,
he should have just called JAF.

Then they'd have come back and helped him out. (Ironic, since the perpetrator himself was a JAF employee.)
    66AnonymousAug 21, 2026 14:01
    Re: #63
But this JAF employee knew the accident had happened and still fled home to his parents' place.
If his parents' house is just before the crossing, maybe he saw the tracks turn into a major accident scene, thought "oh no," and went home anyway.
    71AnonymousAug 21, 2026 14:04
Why couldn't he just drive out past the crossing barrier?

Situations like that can happen (breakdowns, accidents, etc.), which is exactly why the rule is: you only enter a crossing if you're sure you can make it all the way across.

    Background and Key Points

JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) is a nonprofit roughly equivalent to the AAA in the US — most of its staff drive rescue vans to disabled vehicles rather than get involved in criminal cases, which is part of why an employee facing an attempted-murder charge became national news. The relevant law here isn’t just driving-school etiquette: Japan’s Road Traffic Act explicitly bars entering a railroad crossing unless the driver can be certain of clearing it entirely, and crossing gates are deliberately engineered to resist being pushed on the way in but snap easily on the way out, precisely because vehicles have historically been trapped this way. Separately, “aori unten” (malicious tailgating) was made its own criminal offense in 2020, carrying up to five years’ imprisonment and mandatory license revocation, after a viral highway case exposed how hard tailgating was to prosecute under ordinary traffic rules.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t “was tailgating bad” — everyone agrees it was — but whether the trailing driver’s own violation (entering a crossing without a guaranteed clear path) legally or morally cancels out the JAF employee’s choice to stop and trap him there, which prosecutors read as intent to kill.

What outside readers may miss is that attempted murder in Japan doesn’t require the victim to be harmed; the charge rests on demonstrated intent, not outcome, which is why one poster had to clarify that the escape shown in dashcam footage doesn’t undercut the charge. The thread never engages with the aori unten law itself, even though it’s the more likely charge to actually stick against the trailing driver.

  • “Money Buys Everything” Sparks Debate on 5ch — “You Can Buy Class Too”

A thread titled “In the end, this world runs on money” popped up on the Nanimo Jikkyou G board, sparking a debate over whether things like class, happiness, and love can actually be bought with money. One comment arguing “class can’t be bought with money” drew a popular pushback: “You can buy class too — if you’re rich, you don’t really need it anyway.” The thread snowballed into discussions of happiness theory and fantasies about what people would do with infinite money.

You're literally wasting your life on it right now

    Background and Key Points

5ch is the successor to the old 2channel, Japan’s largest anonymous message-board network, and Nanimo Jikkyou (なんJ) is one of its most-read subforums — originally built for live sports commentary but long since drifted into general chat dominated by young, mostly male posters trading deadpan, often self-deprecating banter. The “Leorio” reference nods to Hunter x Hunter, whose money-obsessed character is nanJ shorthand for exactly this argument; invoking him signals the poster expects to be mocked, which is part of the board’s house style. The debate itself sits against three decades of flat real wages and a widening gap between secure “regular” employees and irregular, precarious workers in Japan — the kind of backdrop that makes “just buy an S&P 500 position and stop working” read as aspirational rather than abstract to this audience.

The thread doesn’t actually split over whether money buys most things — nearly everyone agrees it buys comfort, deference, and escape from labor. The real fault line is over hinkaku, “class” or refinement: one side treats it as an innate trait money can’t touch, the other insists it’s just another purchasable trapping, buyable by literally acquiring a title (company president, hospital director) the way status was bought in earlier eras.

What’s easy to miss reading this in English is that no one in the thread invokes any actual data — no Gini coefficient, no wage statistics, nothing about Japan’s comparatively narrow income inequality relative to the US. It’s a purely rhetorical, meme-driven exercise, not a policy discussion, and its cynicism is a genre convention of the board rather than a demographic survey of Japanese attitudes toward wealth.

Prepare two boards, each with a hole at the same height.
Set them up at points A and B, 10km apart.
Fire a laser through the hole in the board at point A.
Since light travels in a straight line, if flat-earth theory were true, the laser from point A should pass through the hole in the board at point B.
But in reality, the laser never passes through the hole at point B — it hits a spot above the hole, offset upward.
In other words, this proves the Earth isn't flat, it's a sphere.

Do this experiment and you'll get it in seconds.

Maybe try drawing a perspective diagram.
    There's a thing called a vanishing point.
The logic should be that it becomes a point on the horizon.
In other words, even when drawing that ship, you never factor in any number for the Earth being round.
Even a 10m object shrinks to a point and eventually disappears.
But that's still just it vanishing on flat ground's horizon, nothing more.

This kind of thing has got to be partly about your attitude toward knowledge.

For what it's worth, I've studied science, so I'm good at drawing accurate diagrams.
    Not illustrations — diagrams.
So I have more ability than the average person to read and represent objects scientifically.
But I've never once actually seen the numbers that show the Earth is round.

    124AnonymousAug 21, 2026 14:00
You're all mocking people who believe in flat earth, aren't you.
Sure, people who blindly believe what others say without scientific verification are fools.
But have you all actually verified with your own experiments that the Earth is a sphere?
Or are you just believing what other people tell you?
Huh, doesn't that make you no different from the fools you're mocking!

Here's an experiment anyone can use to verify the Earth is round.
If it's a sphere, then the water's surface is curved too, not flat.
So look across a body of water more than 5km wide and see if you can spot the far shore.
If it's curved, you shouldn't be able to see the low shoreline — only the tops of tall buildings.
5km is the distance at which, given Earth's diameter, the far side disappears below the sea surface.

Do this and you too are a proper scientist.
By the way, here's a photo from when I actually ran the experiment.

    Background and Key Points

The number the article cites echoes a genre of English-language polling from the past decade — YouGov-style surveys that ask Americans whether they’ve “always believed,” “used to believe but now doubt,” or “never believed” the Earth is round, with the flat-Earth-adjacent minority landing somewhere around one in six. That movement itself is not new: it traces to the 19th-century “Zetetic” society founded by Samuel Rowbotham, and was revived in the 2010s largely through YouTube and podcast conspiracy culture, often overlapping with distrust of NASA, biblical literalism, and general institutional skepticism — the “religion, not poverty” framing raised early in the thread is closer to the actual research literature than the “unequal society” theory it was responding to.

What the thread actually divided over wasn’t belief versus disbelief in a round Earth — nobody on 5ch endorsed flat-Earth theory outright — but a meta-question: what counts as legitimate proof, and who gets to claim they’ve “verified” anything themselves. Posters proposing horizon, laser, and shadow experiments were met not by flat-Earth pushback but by a self-described empiricist arguing that trusting textbook diagrams is itself just secondhand belief, no different in kind from religious faith. That argument, and the pushback that refusing all secondhand knowledge makes learning from anyone impossible, is the real fault line here.

The thing likely to be missed by readers unfamiliar with the source: a “don’t fully agree the Earth is round” response in polling isn’t the same as “believes the Earth is flat” — it usually captures agnosticism or reflexive contrarianism toward a question people rarely think about, not a coherent competing cosmology.

    Re: #111
By that logic Le Creuset, who pulls basically the same stunt, doesn't have final-boss presence either

    Background and Key Points

Gundam X (1996) landed in the so-called “dark age” of the franchise, airing after Victory Gundam’s ratings collapse forced Sunrise to cut the planned 39 (or more) episodes down to 39… actually to roughly half its intended run, squeezing years of planned plot into a truncated 39-episode broadcast. That compression is the root of most complaints above: factions, the Vulture gang’s motives, and the Frost Brothers’ backstory all got cut down mid-production, which is why posters like >>61 can’t even agree on what the Freeden crew’s “journey” actually resolved. Its take on Newtypes (here called “Newtype descendants”) was also ahead of its time thematically, which is why a 2019-era poster (>>5) argues it only reads as prescient decades later, in the Unicorn/GQuuuuuuX era.

The thread doesn’t actually split on whether X is good or bad — nearly everyone agrees it’s a weak entry — it splits on *why*. One camp blames the mecha design language (lame MS designs on both sides, villains lacking “final boss presence”), another blames the writing/compression (jumbled factions, worse than even Wing), and a third (>>86) proposes a market mechanism: weak kit sales for X and V fed back into weaker merchandising support, unlike later shows such as Iron-Blooded Orphans that got kit support despite thin scripts.

What the thread never states outright: X’s ratings crash is well documented as the direct cause of Turn A Gundam’s subsequent “back to basics” reset, and Bandai’s toy-sales-driven model means a Gundam series’ creative freedom is downstream of kit revenue — so the “bad designs -> bad sales” causality posters assume may run the other way, with budget and schedule cuts (themselves downstream of V Gundam’s failure) producing the “subtly not cool” designs fans are criticizing.

  • Consumer Prices Rise 1.8% in July, Missing 2% Target for 7th Straight Month

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications reported that the July Consumer Price Index (core CPI, excluding fresh food) rose 1.8% year-on-year, coming in below the Bank of Japan’s 2% target for the seventh consecutive month. The growth rate accelerated from June’s 1.6%, and on 5ch, users debated whether gasoline and water subsidies are artificially suppressing the index, the widening gap with the Producer Price Index, and the pros and cons of interest rate hikes and a consumption tax cut.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced on the 21st that the July Consumer Price Index (CPI, 2025=100), excluding volatile fresh food, stood at 102.1, up 1.8% from the same month last year. Rising utility and water costs pushed the index higher.

The figure matched the 1.8% median forecast compiled beforehand by QUICK. It marked the seventh straight month below the Bank of Japan’s 2% price stability target. The growth rate widened by 0.2 points from June’s 1.6% gain, the second consecutive month of acceleration.

In August, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications switched the CPI’s base year from 2020 to 2025. Index figures from January 2025 onward are calculated under the new base.

Has the market fully absorbed the effects of cost-push inflation? Real wage growth was supposed to mean this subtraction was shrinking, right?

That's how much they're spending on gasoline subsidies. In just 5 months they've burned through trillions of yen, leaving only 210 billion yen. At one point the subsidy was as high as 50 yen per liter. Crude prices had finally settled down and the subsidy shrank to about 5 yen per liter, but then Trump pulled another stunt and oil prices went back up.

At this rate we're going to end up as the grasshopper in the Ant and the Grasshopper.

Tokyo's water subsidy was also in place last year,
so year-on-year, the free high school tuition seems to have a bigger effect.
That should also drop out of the calculation after a year, though.
More importantly, the seasonally adjusted month-on-month figure has been climbing since around March, and this month the core index (excluding fresh food) came in at 0.3%.
Simply annualized, that works out to over 3.6%.

    181AnonymousAug 21, 2026 12:52
    Re: #169
    Exactly this.
If you don't strip out the portion where subsidies are holding prices down, you can't call it the real inflation rate, and you can't make correct decisions about things like rate hikes.

And they also need to exclude items like rice, which aren't classified as fresh food but still swing wildly.
    194AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:17
That's because subsidies are being handed out. Look at the Producer Price Index.
    195AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:31
    Re: #194
The Producer Price Index has been staying above 7% this whole time.
Anyone who doesn't feel alarmed by that and says stuff like 'no need to raise rates' or 'we should even cut rates' — something must be wrong with their brain.
    200AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:39
    Re: #194
Doesn't the Producer Price Index also reflect the gasoline and electricity/gas subsidies?
If it's still at 7% even with that, that seems pretty alarming.

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s core CPI (all-items excluding fresh food) is the number the Bank of Japan targets, and the BOJ has aimed for a stable 2% since adopting inflation targeting under Kuroda in 2013 as part of Abenomics, which was built to escape two decades of deflation. Missing that target for seven straight months means, from the BOJ’s own framework, that reflation still isn’t durable — even though headline prices have felt punishing to households since 2022. Two subsidy programs are doing real work on the reported number: a national gasoline subsidy (once as high as ¥50/liter, now roughly ¥5/liter after burning through most of its budget) and water/utility subsidies layered on top of one-off comparison effects like free high school tuition, all of which push the year-on-year figure down mechanically rather than reflecting market prices.

The thread’s real disagreement isn’t over the 1.8% figure itself but over what it means: one camp treats CPI as the authoritative signal and reads 1.8% as “close enough,” using it to argue against a consumption tax cut or rate hikes; the other insists the true, unsubsidized rate is already well past 2%, pointing to the Producer Price Index running above 7% as proof that cost pressure is still working its way downstream.

What outside readers likely miss is that Japan’s “core CPI” definition excludes only fresh food, not energy — unlike the US/EU convention where “core” strips out energy too — so this index is more exposed to the very subsidies distorting it. The thread also never engages with the structural rice-price shock of the past two years, a separate driver of food inflation that the subsidy debate ignores entirely.
