  • Maria Makino Graduated Almost Six Months Ago — Why Hasn’t the ‘Marian Withdrawal’ Hit?

A thread was started asking why, after Maria Makino’s graduation from Morning Musume, there’s still no sign of “Marian withdrawal” (fans missing her), when “Sayumi Michishige withdrawal” and “Masaki Sato withdrawal” were both clearly visible within months of their respective graduations. Posters pointed to her heavy media exposure on shows like Lovit and to the fact she was already known more as a baseball fan than as an idol, while opinions split over the circumstances of her graduation.

    1AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:05
You could spot "Chayu withdrawal" (Sayumi Michishige's nickname) and "Ma-chan withdrawal" (Masaki Sato's nickname) popping up about 3 months after they graduated,
but I've never once heard of "Marian withdrawal"! Not a peep!
    2AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:07
Probably because she didn't actually retire.
If she'd retired for real, it'd be a totally different story.

    Wait, did Sato retire?
    4AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:07
Because you can still catch her all the time on shows like Lovit.
    5AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:09
She was always more "the baseball girl" than a group member to begin with.

    Re: #5
    Exactly!
She's not "Morning Musume's resident baseball fan" —
she's "a die-hard baseball otaku who just happened to end up in Hello! Project."
    12AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:16
Once it became nothing but baseball, baseball, baseball,
    everyone had already checked out.
    24AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:22
Because she's on TV practically every week.

And yet zero buzz about it lol
    25AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:22
Hello! Project fans had already forgotten her by the 2-month mark,
so there's no way they'd suddenly remember her at 3 months.
    27AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:24
Probably because you can find her literally anywhere.
    31AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:25
Wasn't it the "my microwave broke" story that drove fans away? (an anecdote of hers fans found off-putting)

No, fans drifted off over the Hikaru Genji thing. (a boy band she's a fan of)
    32AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:26
She's more in the public eye now than she ever was as a Musume member.

Are the stadium stands really "the public eye," though?

Appearing on Lovit — aka "Oha Suta for NEETs" — is basically her reason for living. (Oha Suta is a kids' morning show; the joke is Lovit fills the same slot for unemployed adults)
    34AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:27
You don't get to call her "despised"
unless you're talking about someone who has 1.9 million fewer followers than their former groupmate
    on both Instagram and YouTube.

    Simple answer:
    because she's always on TV.

Being graduated just 2 months after the announcement was clearly a rushed firing.

She's been working nonstop without a single gap, so there's no room to even feel the loss.
    52AnonymousAug 24, 2026 13:01
    Re: #50
So you're saying her work as an idol never mattered anyway?
    55AnonymousAug 24, 2026 13:15
Same as how there was never any "Ikuta withdrawal" either. (Erina Ikuta, another former member)

Even the antis can't stop talking about her — sounds like they're going through withdrawal too lol
    66AnonymousAug 24, 2026 14:05
    Re: #59
    Right, lol
The antis are the ones saying "Makino, Makino" nonstop more than anyone lol

    Background and Key Points

Maria Makino graduated from Morning Musume — the flagship group of Hello! Project, Japan’s dominant idol-management institution built on decades-old franchises like Morning Musume, ANGERME, and Juice=Juice — roughly six months before this thread appeared. Within Hello! Project fandom, “withdrawal” (ロス, “loss”) is a recognized post-graduation phenomenon: fans openly missing a departed member is treated as a rough gauge of her impact, and past graduates like Sayumi Michishige and Masaki Sato reportedly triggered visible “loss” chatter within about three months. Makino’s case stands out because that reaction never materialized, which is what prompted the thread.

The posts don’t converge on a single explanation so much as offer competing ones without resolving them. Some frame it structurally — she never really left the public eye, appearing regularly on shows like Lovit, so there’s no absence to mourn. Others frame it as an identity issue — she was already known primarily as a baseball fan (nicknamed for drumming at games) rather than as a idol performer, so her graduation didn’t remove a “member” so much as relocate a baseball personality. A third strand disputes the premise itself, with posters debating whether she was pushed out or left voluntarily, and whether antagonism from critics (who apparently still post about her daily) actually counts as a form of not-forgetting.

What’s likely to trip up readers unfamiliar with H!P fan culture is that “loss” isn’t simple sentimentality — it’s a fandom-internal metric fans use to rank how much a member mattered, and its absence here is being read as a quiet verdict on her standing, not just a comment on her TV schedule. The thread never addresses whether Makino’s post-graduation media appearances are under Hello! Project’s management or a new arrangement, which would materially change the “she never really left” argument.

  • Fujicco’s Official X Hand-Makes Totoro’s Satsuki Bento, Sparks Buzz: “Spot-On Recreation”, “Looks Plain But Tasty”

On August 21, food maker Fujicco’s official X account posted a handmade bento recreating the lunch Satsuki packed in the movie My Neighbor Totoro. Since the “Simmered Sardines” and “Uguisu Beans” used were actual products from the company’s own lineup, reactions poured in on 5channel over the true identity of the pink sakura denbu topping and people’s taste preferences.

    2026-08-24 13:30

On the 21st, Fujicco’s official X account (@fujicco_jp) posted a handmade bento with the caption, “Take a look at the effort put in by someone on our team!” Responses poured in, including “That’s Satsuki’s bento from Totoro!” and “The recreation is perfect.”

The post showed a bento of white rice topped with simmered sardines, pickled plum, sakura denbu (sweet pink fish flakes), and uguisu beans. Notably, the “Simmered Sardines” and “Uguisu Beans” are both real products Fujicco actually sells, giving the dish a familiar, “I’ve seen this before” touch by featuring the company’s own products.

    How to make sakura denbu:
    1. First, color a notebook page solid pink with a highlighter.
    2. Once the colored page dries, erase it so the eraser shavings turn pink.
    3. Mince the pink shavings finely with a ruler.
    4. Done! 🤗

    >White rice with simmered sardines ('umani')…

Would you really call sardines 'umani'?
There's ginger-simmered, plum-simmered, sansho-pepper-simmered, but either way this is just nitsuke (a fish simmer).
'Umani' feels like a term for simmering plain, mild ingredients in dashi (plus soy sauce, sake, mirin, sugar, etc).
You wouldn't use dashi to simmer sardines, would you?

    Re: #94
Are we talking wartime here, senpai?

    Background and Key Points

Fujicco is a century-old Kobe-based food maker best known in Japan for kombu tsukudani (simmered kelp) and bottled natto, the kind of small-format side-dish products that sit in nearly every supermarket’s specialty aisle rather than being a nationally flashy brand. That low profile is why several posters mixed the company up with the broadcaster Fuji TV — a mistake that says more about the maker’s modest name recognition than about the stunt itself. The bento itself is a direct reference to My Neighbor Totoro (1988), where Satsuki packs her father’s and sister’s lunches with rice topped by umeboshi, simmered sardines, sakura denbu and uguisu mame — a humble, slightly old-fashioned Showa-era home lunch that Ghibli rendered in loving detail and that many Japanese viewers recognize instantly.

The thread’s actual fault line wasn’t whether the recreation was accurate — that was accepted almost immediately — but whether sakura denbu itself is appealing at all. It’s seasoned, sweetened flaked whitefish (often cod) dyed pink, and reactions split sharply between people who find its sugar-forward taste an essential nostalgic counterpoint to plain rice and others who find sweet toppings on rice actively unpleasant.

What the thread never explains, and outsiders likely won’t infer, is why several posters used the term “umani” so precisely: it’s a specific Japanese cooking method (simmering in dashi, soy sauce, mirin and sugar) usually reserved for vegetables or mild proteins, so applying it to oily sardines struck some commenters as a slight misnomer even though it’s Fujicco’s own product name.

  • Kazlaser to Father Who Left His 7-Year-Old Alone on Mt. Fuji: ‘Weren’t You Scared?’

Appearing on Nippon TV’s “DayDay.”, comedian Kazlaser commented on the case of a 7-year-old boy who was left behind by his father on a Mt. Fuji hiking trail and rescued by police about two hours later, saying: “Leaving a child outside alone for eight hours… doesn’t that scare you?”

On the 5ch Entertainment & Sports News+ board, opinion split between users who, noting the boy was left near a mountain hut, showed some understanding (“that’s a call you can only make because Fuji is basically a theme park”) and those who criticized the father, arguing “there’s no way a 7-year-old would just wait quietly” and “he only left him because he wasn’t scared.”

Kazlaser on the Father Who Left a 7-Year-Old Boy Alone on Mt. Fuji: “Leaving a Child Outside Alone for Eight Hours… Doesn’t That Scare You?”

Kazlaser (41), of the comedy duo Maple Chogokin, appeared on Nippon TV’s “DayDay.” (weekdays at 9:00 a.m.) on the 24th, where he commented on the rescue by police of a 7-year-old elementary school boy who had been left behind by his father on Mt. Fuji.

At around 7:40 a.m. on the 20th, staff at a mountain hut at the sixth station of the Fujinomiya Trail on the Shizuoka Prefecture side of Mt. Fuji reported to the Fujinomiya Police Station that “a child has been left alone.” Officers rescued the 7-year-old elementary school boy roughly two hours later.

If a 7-year-old is throwing a fit, there's not much you can do about it.
Fine if he were 3 or 4, but at 7 he should just be following his dad.

What if the kid couldn't wait, wandered off, and had an accident?
What if he got hypothermia, or was taken by some weirdo?
Can you really raise kids with someone who can't even picture that?

    102AnonymousAug 24, 2026 15:58
    Re: #101
You can just climb back up one station from the 5th station, right?

    Background and Key Points

Kazlaser’s remark referred to a real incident on the Fujinomiya Trail, one of Mt. Fuji’s four official climbing routes, running up the Shizuoka Prefecture side to the summit. The 7-year-old was one of three family members — father, this boy, and an older brother in his first year of middle school — climbing together when the boy apparently stopped moving partway up. Staff at a mountain hut near the sixth station, a rest stop with lodging that sits at roughly 2,500m, well below the 3,776m summit, called police after finding him alone; officers recovered him about two hours later, though reports framed the total time alone as around eight hours. For non-Japanese readers, it helps to know Mt. Fuji’s lower stations are heavily trafficked and commercially developed, with staffed huts, toilets, and food service, which is why several posters treated it as comparatively low-risk compared to abandoning a child in true wilderness.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t whether leaving a child alone is defensible in the abstract, but whether the sixth-station hut environment changes the calculus enough to excuse it — one camp argued Fuji’s infrastructure makes this different from wilderness abandonment, while critics countered that no realistic 7-year-old would sit quietly for hours and that the father’s own admitted lack of fear, not the location, was the actual problem.

What outside readers likely miss is that Japan has no dedicated child-neglect statute comparable to Western “child endangerment” laws with mandatory reporting triggers; police intervention here was situational, hinging on a hut employee’s judgment call rather than an automatic legal threshold, which is why commenters debated whether this “should” have been prosecuted rather than assuming it already had been.

  • Splatoon Ichiban Kuji Prizes Under Fire as Prints Peel Off in Droves

Reports have piled up on 5ch that the printed designs on prizes from Bandai Spirits’ “Ichiban Kuji Splatoon” lottery — including glass cups — easily peel off when hand-washed or run through a dishwasher.

The thread filled up with photos showing the peeling in action, and opinions split over whether the blame lies with Bandai Namco, who manufactured the goods, or Nintendo, the IP holder.

    Re: #95
It's confirmed Bandai Namco is at fault
As for Nintendo, if they were kept in the dark about it, there's no way for them to have known

    Background and Key Points

Splatoon’s Ichiban Kuji (“Number One Lottery”) is Bandai Spirits’ long-running lottery-merchandise format, sold in convenience stores and hobby shops across Japan: fans pay per draw for a chance at exclusive prizes, with premium items like glass cups typically reserved for higher tiers. Bandai Namco (the manufacturing arm) produces the goods under license from Nintendo, which owns the Splatoon IP. This division of labor — Nintendo licenses, Bandai Namco/Spirits manufactures and sells — is the crux of the dispute, since it means quality-control failures don’t automatically implicate the IP holder.

The thread’s actual fault line wasn’t whether the peeling glass cups were defective (everyone agreed they were) but who should be held responsible for it. Some posters pinned it squarely on Bandai Namco as the manufacturer, pointing to similar recent complaints about their Kamen Rider merchandise as evidence of a broader quality slide. Others argued responsibility traces back to Nintendo regardless, either because Nintendo sets the production budget Bandai Namco has to work within, or because Nintendo should have caught the flaw when approving pre-production samples.

What the thread doesn’t address is that sample-approval and mass-production runs are separate stages with separate quality risks — a poster raised this once (a passed sample doesn’t guarantee defect-free mass output) but the point didn’t shape the discussion further. Readers unfamiliar with Ichiban Kuji’s licensing structure may also assume Nintendo directly manufactures these prizes, when in practice IP holders in these lottery deals usually have limited visibility into the contracted factory’s actual production process.

  • GTA6 Leak Scandal Escalates Into Official Take-Two Lawsuit — Leaked Footage’s Graphics Leave Fans Disappointed

Take-Two has filed suit in New York federal court against “CyberLeek,” the alleged leaker of an unreleased GTA6 build, and has issued subpoenas to Microsoft and Discord in an effort to identify them. On the thread, it emerged that the leaked footage was from the PC version rather than the PS5 version, sparking a wave of disappointment (“if this is the PC version, doesn’t that mean the main game’s graphics are worse than RDR2?”) and spinning off into debate over how many copies the game would need to sell to recoup its development costs.

🚨 The manhunt over Take-Two’s cyber leak is escalating 🚨

The full court filing has leaked, and this has moved from a simple takedown notice into all-out legal warfare.

Take-Two has officially filed suit in New York federal court and slapped subpoenas on Microsoft and Discord in an effort to unmask CyberLeek’s true identity. ⚖

🚨 CYBERLEEK sends ROCKSTAR another message 🚨

CyberLeek is reportedly claiming the following:

    • They have an active GTA 6 build in their possession
    • Copies of that build have already been distributed worldwide
    • The public release has to be manually "canceled" every single day
This means that if anything happens to CyberLeek, the build in question could go public automatically. 😱

🚨🔥 Tense standoff: the GTA 6 leaker throws down their most dangerous challenge yet — claiming to have a complete build of the game, and to be holding a "dead man's switch" that publishes it if anything happens to them.

Cyberleek asserts they've already distributed copies of the build to servers and drives worldwide, and that they manually cancel its release every single day.

If they're arrested or otherwise stop doing this, they claim the cancellation lifts automatically and the entire game could leak in full within days. This is an unverified claim on their part, but it comes from someone who has already proven access to a playable build.

If the trailer doesn't show gameplay footage, that's the cue to steer clear of what might be a dud
Doubt the overseas crowd will manage that kind of restraint though

    Background and Key Points

Some background is essential here. Rockstar’s parent Take-Two has never confirmed a GTA6 budget, but reporting has pegged development and marketing costs in the $1–2 billion range, making it one of the most expensive entertainment products ever made — for comparison, GTA5 reportedly cost around $265 million and went on to sell over 200 million copies across more than a decade. Rockstar has also historically staggered platforms: GTA5’s PC version arrived roughly 18 months after the console launch, and Rockstar has openly said it’s repeating that pattern with GTA6, optimizing the lead PS5 build first before a later, enhanced PC port (what the thread called the “Witcher method,” after CD Projekt’s own console-first workflow). Filing a “Doe” lawsuit and issuing subpoenas to platforms like Microsoft and Discord is also a standard, unremarkable US legal tool for identifying anonymous defendants — it isn’t itself proof of guilt, just the mechanism plaintiffs use before a name can even go on the complaint.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t whether the leak was genuine — posters accepted that quickly — but whether the footage came from an actual PC build or simply a PS5 build being run on PC development hardware, which would explain rough visuals without implying the finished game looks that way.

What’s likely being missed is that early, leaked, or datamined footage from any AAA title is almost always running debug settings, disabled effects, and unfinished assets — a poor benchmark for the shipped product — and that the recoup-cost math posters floated (20 million units) was speculative, since Take-Two has never disclosed a break-even figure.

  • Cancer Survivor Chiaki Hara Blasts Health Ministry Tie-In With Kawaguchi Haruna Film as ‘Lacking Consideration’

Actress Chiaki Hara took to X to point out that the title of the film “Mama ga Mou Kono Sekai ni Inakutemo” (“Even If Mom Is No Longer in This World”), which was running a tie-in campaign with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, may lack consideration for AYA-generation cancer patients. The Ministry has reportedly already pulled the tie-in announcement and is asking hospitals to take down posters that had already been put up.

Opinion on the forum thread was split, with pushback like “if it doesn’t evoke death, people won’t bother getting cancer screenings” and “isn’t this just nitpicking?” mixed in with supportive takes like “they should stop displaying it in hospitals.”

    Mon, Aug 24, 2:23 PM

Actress Chiaki Hara updated her X (formerly Twitter) account on the 24th, sharing her personal views on the tie-in between the film “Mama ga Mou Kono Sekai ni Inakutemo,” starring actress Haruna Kawaguchi, and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

On the 19th of this month, the Ministry announced the tie-in with the film “Mama ga Mou Kono Sekai ni Inakutemo” on its official X account. The goal was to raise awareness of support available to young cancer patients and their families, and the post read: “#MamaGaMouKonoSekaiNiInakutemo x Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare — To spread awareness of the support and services available to AYA-generation (ages 15-39) cancer patients and their families, we’re partnering with the film #Mamaseka (@mamaseka_movie). Re: #132
The problem is the government ordering hospitals to put up the poster

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) routinely partners with popular films, dramas, and celebrities to push public-health messaging, since straightforward pamphlets rarely reach a mass audience. The “AYA generation” designation – Adolescent and Young Adult, roughly ages 15 to 39 – is the ministry’s own bureaucratic label for cancer patients who fall between pediatric and adult oncology care, a group Japan’s health system has historically underserved with tailored support, counseling, and financial-aid information. That gap is what the tie-in with “Mama ga Mou Kono Sekai ni Inakutemo” was meant to address: the posters, distributed to hospitals, pointed patients and families toward consultation services rather than promoting the film itself.

The thread’s disagreement was not really about whether the movie should exist or whether Chiaki Hara had the right to complain – almost no one defended the title as inoffensive in the abstract. The split was over whether a death-referencing title is acceptable specifically on material a ministry places inside hospital wards, where the audience skews toward people currently undergoing cancer treatment rather than the general public being nudged toward a screening. Posters citing “if it doesn’t evoke death, people won’t get screened” were defending the marketing logic of cancer-awareness campaigns broadly, not this particular hospital placement.

What outside readers are likely to miss is that the film itself was never pulled or altered – only the ministry’s tie-in announcement and the hospital posters were withdrawn, at the ministry’s own admission of poor judgment. It’s a narrower administrative walk-back, not a censorship story or a verdict on the movie’s content.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Actress Chiaki Hara, in her 30s and a cancer survivor, asks ‘Isn’t this lacking consideration?’ — points out that the Kawaguchi Haruna film x Health Ministry tie-in title evokes death.”

  • Voice Actors’ “Real Popularity Ranking” Sparks Heated Debate — Venue Capacity Also a Hot Topic

In a 5ch thread ranking voice actors’ popularity, fans clashed over how popular various Liella! members really are. Venue capacities, event lottery results, and rumors surrounding an Okinawa concert were all thrown into the mix, fueling a heated debate. Specific venue sizes were cited for Nako Misaki’s solo tour — 1,146 seats in Nagoya, 1,417 in Osaka, and 2,021 in Hachioji.

    Re: #69
Look who's talking — someone who barely even goes to events

    Background and Key Points

Voice actors in Japan’s “seiyuu-idol” scene, especially those tied to franchises like Love Live!, don’t just voice characters — they hold real concert tours, meet-and-greets, and radio shows under their own names, performing as an extension of the characters they play. Liella! is the voice-actor unit behind the Love Live! Superstar!! anime, and its members build individual fan followings that rival the characters themselves. Because agencies rarely publish ticket sales or fan-club membership numbers, fans on 5ch use proxies — venue capacity, how full a hall looked, and lottery win rates for fan-club events — to informally rank who is “really” popular, which is exactly what this thread is doing with Nako Misaki’s 2026 solo tour stops (1,146 seats in Nagoya, 1,417 in Osaka, 2,021 in Hachioji).

The actual disagreement isn’t over the raw numbers but over what they mean: one camp reads a shrunken fan-club bar-event capacity and a wave of lottery losses as proof that an unspecified “Okinawa incident” cost a top actor real fans, while another insists the smaller venue was simply a booking availability issue (their usual hall, Nissho Hall, wasn’t free) and that demand is unchanged or even growing.

What outside readers are likely to miss is that none of this is verified — no agency statement, sales report, or attendance count backs either side; it’s fans eyeballing photos and half-empty upper floors. The “Okinawa incident” itself is never explained in the thread, so its severity is pure speculation, and terms like “died” (a fan quitting) or “kareba” (an exposed dating rumor) are insider shorthand, not documented events.

  • CDs Are Cool Again Among British Youth — Searches Up 96%, 5ch: “Wired Headphones Are a Style Statement”

The UK’s Guardian newspaper reports that young people are making CDs cool again. According to department store chain John Lewis, searches for CD players have jumped 96% since July, partly driven by students buying them for their dorm rooms ahead of starting university.

On 5ch, the story sparked a wave of nostalgia, with posters swapping stories about lending cassette tapes, DAT Walkmans, and Discmans. The thread also lit up with a wired-vs-wireless earphone debate and a finer point of generational nitpicking: whether CDs count as “Showa retro” or “Heisei retro.”

CDs are apparently making a comeback among young people in the UK. The British newspaper The Guardian ran a feature titled “How young people are making CDs cool again,” digging into the reasons why.

According to a report from British department store chain John Lewis, searches for CD players in the UK have risen 96% since July. One likely factor is that students headed to university are buying CD players for their dorm rooms.

    Re: #118
    It's sticking out!
That's gonna get scratched to hell

    Background and Key Points

The Guardian’s story sits inside a broader “physical media revival” that started with vinyl roughly a decade ago and has since pulled cassettes and now CDs back into fashion among UK teens and university students; John Lewis’s 96% search jump since July lines up with the back-to-school period, when dorm-room shopping lists get made. For Japanese readers, CDs carry a different weight: the format didn’t fully displace vinyl domestically until the very end of Showa (which ended in January 1989) and only became the default through the Heisei era, and Sony’s own D-88 Discman, referenced in the thread, dates to 1988. Japan is also unusual in that CDs never really went away commercially the way they did in the UK and US — physical sales have stayed a much larger share of the Japanese music market for years, propped up by idol and J-pop handshake-ticket bundling — a fact the thread never brings up even though it’s the most relevant point of comparison to the UK’s “rediscovery.”

Where the thread actually splits is generational labeling, not the CD trend itself: posters agree the format is having a moment, but argue over whether it should be filed as “Showa retro” or “Heisei retro,” since CDs were still a minority format when Showa ended and only won out afterward. A secondary, more casual split is wired versus wireless earphones — one side treats charging as a trivial nightly habit, the other treats a dead battery as a dealbreaker.

What’s easy to miss reading this in English is that the nostalgia here is doubly layered: Japanese posters aren’t just reacting to a British youth trend, they’re using it as a prompt to relitigate their own domestic media history.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “CDs Are Back Among British Youth: ‘Wearing a Portable CD Player with Wired Headphones Is a Way to Show Off Your Sense of Style’”.

  • Kazlaser Questions Shinto Ritual That Spins Babies Three Times: “Why Make Them Cry?”

On his radio show, Maple Chogokin’s Kazlaser raised questions about “Kamikorogashi,” a ritual held at Yaizu Shrine in Shizuoka. The custom involves spinning infants aged 0 to 2 three times, with the belief that the louder they cry, the sturdier they’ll grow up to be. On 5ch, reactions ranged from speculation that it was once a way to check a baby’s health, to pushback against criticizing tradition.

Kazlaser of the comedy duo Maple Chogokin appeared on the radio program “Weekly! Shaberaser” (SBS Radio) on the 21st, where he questioned the “Kamikorogashi” ritual held at Yaizu Shrine in Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Kamikorogashi is performed to pray for children’s healthy growth. Two shrine representatives work in pairs, spinning infants aged 0 to 2 three times while chanting “An-etton.”

It’s said that the louder the baby cries, the sturdier they’ll grow up to be.

The more they cry, the more stamina and lung capacity they build. Even adults wear themselves out from a good hard cry.

    16AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:58
Stuff that seems pointless now — maybe it was done for babies who were slow to roll over?
    18AnonymousAug 24, 2026 12:59
Same with the "issho-mochi" thing where they strap a rice cake on the baby's back — the kids all cry during that one too. (issho-mochi: a first-birthday tradition where the baby carries a roughly 2kg rice cake)

Rituals like "please let the child grow up safely," born from an era of high infant mortality, probably make no sense by today's standards. Shichi-Go-San might be the exception — "you made it this far, well done" is easy enough to understand.

He's really turned into someone who only makes cheap negative comments. Behind that easy criticism he tosses out to fill airtime, there are people who make their living from this and people trying to keep the tradition alive.
    96AnonymousAug 24, 2026 13:56
    Re: #94
The Japanese people making a living off it would be the Shinto priests, so Kazlaser better be ready for what's coming.

    Background and Key Points

Kamikorogashi is a hyper-local rite, not a nationwide rule: it belongs to Yaizu Shrine in Shizuoka and sits inside a much larger family of Japanese child-blessing customs — hatsumiyamairi (a newborn’s first shrine visit), Shichi-Go-San (blessings at ages 3, 5, and 7), and mochi-carrying rituals like issho-mochi — that trace back to eras of high infant mortality, when simply surviving to childhood was not guaranteed. Many of these customs pair prayer with a deliberately induced fright or hardship (Namahage’s costumed scolders, the shishimai lion “biting” children’s heads), on the folk logic that a strong reaction — crying, fear — was itself evidence of vitality, or in some tellings a rough way of screening for developmental problems before modern pediatrics existed.

The thread’s actual disagreement isn’t over whether the ritual is real or harmless — nobody defends it as medically sound — it’s over whether a comedian is entitled to publicly question it. One side reads Kazlaser’s “does it earn a yen” framing as symptomatic of reducing culture to economic output, noting he’s leveled the same complaint at Shichi-Go-San and Tanabata; the other treats the health-screening theory as plausible ancestral wisdom and argues detached critics haven’t stood in the parents’ shoes.

What outsiders likely miss is the economic subtext: small shrines like this one are often financially precarious, and rituals such as Kamikorogashi are literally how local Shinto priests earn income, which is why several posters treat “questioning tradition” as also questioning someone’s livelihood — a dimension the thread raises but never fully explores.

*This article was compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Kazlaser questions the Japanese Shinto ritual of spinning infants three times, “Kamikorogashi”: “Why make them cry? I wouldn’t do that to my own kid.”“

  • Man Who FIRE’d with ¥150 Million Gets Called Out in Daughter’s Picture Diary: ‘Dad Just Lounges Around All Day’

Daisuke Nomura (pseudonym, 46), who worked as a systems engineer at a foreign-owned IT company and reached an annual salary of ¥14 million, achieved FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) at 45 with ¥150 million in assets. However, his fourth-grade daughter’s summer vacation picture diary reportedly read, “Dad just lounges around in the living room all day looking at his phone.” On 5ch, opinions flew back and forth — “What’s the point of FIRE-ing with no goal?” and “If you’ve got a wife and kids, at least do the housework if you’re going to FIRE” — while plenty of others pointed out the sheer formula of how these asset-flex puff pieces keep getting churned out.

“Dad just lounges around in the living room on his phone all day. He only goes for a walk once in a while.”

Daisuke Nomura (46, pseudonym), who lives in a condominium in Tokyo, was left speechless after peeking at the picture diary of his only daughter, 10-year-old Misaki (pseudonym), a fourth-grader. The page, submitted as summer homework, contained an honest, merciless dose of “contempt” for her father.

Daisuke worked grueling hours as a systems engineer at a foreign-owned IT firm, with his annual salary peaking at ¥14 million. Starting in his early 30s, he built up his savings through relentless frugality and investing. At 45, once his managed assets hit ¥150 million, he retired and finally achieved his long-cherished goal of FIRE.

    Background and Key Points

The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement took off in Japan roughly parallel to its US counterpart in the mid-2010s, but the numbers work differently here. ¥150 million is roughly $1 million at recent exchange rates, and a ¥14 million salary (~$95,000) already put Nomura in a rare bracket for a Japanese salaryman, since IT engineers at foreign firms are among the few groups who can out-earn the seniority-based pay ladders at domestic companies. Japanese financial-media outlets — sites like Gold Online and Diamond Online, referenced obliquely in the thread as “Financial World” — run a recognizable genre of these profiles, always built on a middle-aged pseudonymous man, a suspiciously round asset figure just above ¥100 million, and a domestic complication that undercuts the triumph.

The thread’s actual disagreement wasn’t over whether FIRE is a good idea; it was over whether this story is real at all. A large share of posters treated it as a template — comment 18 recalls an almost identical ¥120 million version, and several flagged the repeated use of “pseudonym” and the formulaic structure as signs of AI-assisted or fabricated content. The minority who did engage with it as genuine split over the wife’s role, since her presumed ¥6 million income was seen as obligating him to housework.

What the piece never mentions is the wife’s own view — the entire moral weight rests on a fourth-grader’s diary and neighborhood judgment, with no input from the person most affected by his day-to-day choices. Readers unfamiliar with this genre may also not realize how disposable these narratives are; the “FIRE burnout, returns to work” follow-up story is itself a stock sequel format in Japanese financial media.
