  • Loch Ness Monster Sightings Already Hit 13 in 2026 — 5ch: “It’s a Vital Tourism Resource”

Tourists at Scotland’s Loch Ness have reported a wave of Nessie sightings, with the tally for 2026 already reaching 13 reports. The thread buzzed with debate over whether the sightings are genuine, accounts of how other cryptids like Bigfoot and Tsuchinoko (a legendary snake-like creature from Japanese folklore) were later exposed as hoaxes, and a rundown of “-ssie”-named lake monsters found around the world.

Tourists at Scotland’s Loch Ness have reported a series of sightings of the mysterious creature known as Nessie. New accounts include a report of a “head and tail” seen in the water and testimony describing a “mysterious shadow.”

[Photo] Is activity surging this year? Sightings keep piling up at Loch Ness

As of July, the 2026 sighting count had already reached 7, but further reports added to the “Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register” have pushed this year’s total to 13 so far. The latest entry, logged on July 27, comes from John Wallace and Jamie Wallace, visitors from Renfrewshire, Scotland, who reported a possible encounter with Nessie.

    Scoop

    Background and Key Points

The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register is run by the Loch Ness Centre in Drumnadrochit and has logged reported encounters since 1996, building on a legend that dates to 1933, when newspaper reports of a “monster” first drew crowds to the loch. The most famous image, the 1934 “Surgeon’s Photograph,” was revealed in 1994 to be a toy submarine staged by associates of a man with a grudge against the Daily Mail. Nessie tourism is now worth tens of millions of pounds a year to the Scottish Highlands, which is the “cash cow” posters keep referencing. For Japanese readers, the thread’s comparison points are folkloric: Tsuchinoko is a legendary short, thick snake-like creature reported across rural Japan for centuries, and the various “-ssie” lake monsters (Issie, Kusshie, Mossie, and so on) are homegrown Nessie parodies attached to Japanese lakes, reflecting how thoroughly the Loch Ness template was absorbed into Japanese pop culture.

The thread didn’t really split over whether Nessie is real — nobody defended that — but over how cynical to be about the sightings being a deliberately sustained tourism ritual versus a genuine, if credulous, folk tradition people still enjoy participating in.

One correction worth noting: the poster who says “the guy admitted it before he died” is conflating the Surgeon’s Photograph confession with the actual first Nessie sighting, Hugh Gray’s photo from 1933, which was never debunked in the same way. The thread also never mentions that plesiosaurs, Nessie’s supposed template, are marine reptiles unrelated to dinosaurs at all — birds are dinosaurs’ true living descendants, a point one poster raises but the group never fully unpacks.

  • Mitsubishi UFJ Makes Amex Platinum Free for ¥30 Million Balances — New ‘Emmet’ Brand Targets the Wealthy

Mitsubishi UFJ Bank has announced “Emmet Excellent Club,” a membership program for wealthy clients built around a ¥30 million deposit balance, which will let qualifying members get an Amex Platinum card for free starting in March 2027. On the forum, comments ranged from “¥30 million is a low bar for a ‘wealthy’ program” and “isn’t this just a rehash of the service Mizuho scrapped five years ago?” to a split debate over whether Amex Platinum itself is even worth having.

Mitsubishi UFJ Bank has announced “Emmet Excellent Club,” a membership program for wealthy clients centered on customers’ deposit balances, launching in March 2027. The bank also announced a digital inheritance platform, “Emmet Souzoku” (“Emmet Inheritance”), set to launch in the second half of fiscal 2026, expanding the reach of “Emmet,” which is billed as covering customers for their entire lives.

“Emmet” launched in June 2025 as a new financial services brand representing a major overhaul of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group’s (MUFG) retail services. Its defining feature is that services are planned and developed across group companies’ domains — cards, trusts, securities, and more.

Since Emmet launched, activity across areas like bank account openings, card issuance, and brokerage account openings has grown significantly year-over-year, with Tadashi Yamamoto, MUFG Executive Managing Officer and Head of the Retail & Digital Business Group / Group CDTO, describing it as “a strong foundation for the next stage of evolution.”

Amex has been pushing the Platinum card really hard lately.
A free one like the one in this article is fine, but with the regular annual fee being so high, it feels like the only people who'd actually get their money's worth are business people constantly flying overseas.
    40AnonymousAug 27, 2026 11:05
    Re: #39
People who pay the full annual fee for Platinum probably aren't thinking about "getting their money's worth" in the first place.

    Background and Key Points

Mitsubishi UFJ’s “Emmet” push follows a broader pattern among Japan’s megabanks: after nearly three decades of near-zero interest rates, deposits were a cost center, and the perks-for-balance model that once existed (Mizuho ran an Amex Platinum-for-deposit scheme until scrapping it five years ago, as poster 8 notes) fell out of favor. The Bank of Japan’s move away from negative rates and toward gradual tightening since 2024 has made large deposit balances profitable again, giving banks reason to court big depositors with free premium cards, and rivals like Sumitomo Mitsui’s “Olive” are doing similar things. For readers unfamiliar with the card itself, Amex Platinum in Japan normally carries an annual fee upward of ¥165,000 and is positioned as a lifestyle/travel card (lounge access, hotel credits) rather than a cash-back product, which is why its value depends heavily on whether a holder actually travels or dines at the high end.

The thread’s real disagreement isn’t about MUFG’s strategy so much as whether ¥30 million even qualifies someone as “wealthy” in 2026 Japan, and separately whether Platinum’s benefits (airport lounge snacks, hotel credits) justify carrying the card at all — two distinct arguments that got tangled together.

What’s likely to be missed by outside readers is that “wealthy client” programs at Japanese banks have historically been built around deposit balances rather than income or net worth, unlike Western private-banking tiers that scrutinize investable assets broadly; a large chunk of a Japanese household’s wealth can sit outside the banking system entirely (real estate, life insurance, postal savings), so a ¥30 million bank balance threshold says less about actual wealth than it appears to.

    104AnonymousAug 27, 2026 11:00
    Re: #99
I don't mind letting it slide, but
I've got no intention of paying money to watch an AV starring a tattooed actress.

    Background and Key Points

Tattoo taboo in Japan runs deeper than fashion preference — it traces back to the Edo period, when irezumi (permanent ink) was used to brand convicted criminals, and to the 20th-century association between full-body “wabori” work and yakuza membership. That history is why many public baths, gyms, and pools in Japan still post blanket no-tattoo signs today, regardless of size or style, and why even a small design can carry social weight far beyond what it would in the US or Europe. In the AV industry specifically, an actress’s tattoos are a permanent, unremovable trait that follows her across her entire catalog, unlike a hairstyle or outfit she can change between releases — which is part of why buyers treat it as a purchase-blocking dealbreaker rather than a minor aesthetic quibble.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t “tattoos: yes or no” — nearly everyone agrees full traditional wabori, skulls, or spider motifs read as “yakuza’s woman” and kill the mood. The split is over scale: several posters (>>99, >>26, >>19) carve out an exception for a single small accent tattoo, especially citing it as unremarkable overseas, while others (>>11, >>104) reject any ink at all, however small, as a dealbreaker for a purchase decision.

What the thread never addresses is the commercial mechanics behind the complaint: an AV title’s sales are shaped heavily by rental/streaming platform curation and thumbnail-driven browsing, so a visible tattoo can suppress a title’s numbers before playback even starts, independent of the performance itself — a distribution effect the posters mistake entirely for a verdict on the actress’s personal appeal.

  • Becky Names the Celebrity She’s ‘Conscious Of’ — A Former Rival

During the popular “Nani wo Kiku Nen” segment on MBS’s variety show Tsukai! Akashiya Denshidai, Becky reportedly revealed the name of the celebrity she’s “conscious of.” On 5ch, names like Mari Yaguchi, Chinatsu Wakatsuki, and Mariko Shinoda came up, sparking discussion about their standing in the entertainment industry at the time and the truth behind their rivalries.

Becky Names the Celebrity She’s “Conscious Of” — A Former Rival

TV personality Becky appears on MBS TV’s Tsukai! Akashiya Denshidai (airing Saturdays at 3:00 PM, Kansai local broadcast) on the 29th, chatting with host Sanma Akashiya.

In the show’s signature segment “Nani wo Kiku Nen,” where 50 members of the studio audience get to question the guest, each audience member writes down the name of a celebrity they think they resemble on a spinning “name board.” Sanma picks out a celebrity name that catches his interest, the audience member who wrote it shares their own story, and then poses a question directly to the guest.

They're not like the Sakamichi/AKB48-type groups where the group is strong but individuals are weak on their own
    113AnonymousAug 27, 2026 11:11
    Re: #106
Becky wasn't actually at those debrief sessions though

    Background and Key Points

Becky is a bicultural (Japanese-British) TV personality who returned to steady work after a 2016 scandal in which her affair with the married musician ENON (of the band Gesu no Kiwami Otome) tanked her career; she rebuilt through years of humble reappearances and now anchors variety shows. Sanma Akashiya’s “Nani wo Kiku Nen” segment on Tsukai! Akashiya Denshidai is built around audience members writing down which celebrity they resemble, giving Sanma an opening to steer the conversation toward gossip-adjacent topics like this one. The “rival” Becky reportedly named isn’t confirmed by name in the excerpt itself, but posters converged on candidates with parallel scandal-and-comeback arcs: Mari Yaguchi (former Morning Musume idol whose own affair scandal ended her group career), Chinatsu Wakatsuki (gravure-idol-turned-actress whose comeback after an affair and leaked LINE messages is treated as unusually successful), and Mariko Shinoda (former AKB48 senior member now typecast in scandal/villain drama roles).

Where the thread actually splits is on Chinatsu Wakatsuki: several posters praise her talk-show sharpness and “likability monster” comeback as untouchable, while others push back that she was reportedly difficult during her comeback (demanding billing with a “company president” title, public blowups over how agencies listed her) — complicating the idea that her rehabilitation was purely a talent story.

What outside readers will likely miss is the genre logic here: Japanese TV has a long-running convention of “rehabilitating” scandal-hit talents by putting them on shows like Sanma’s, and posters explicitly frame this segment as continuing that pattern rather than as neutral entertainment news — the “rival” framing is itself a device for reopening old scandal narratives, not a spontaneous personal revelation.

That's the tricky part about Japanese —
with kanji, katakana, hiragana, and the Roman alphabet all mixed together,
you can write without spacing words apart, which backfires sometimes.

Unless you clearly write it as 'いい加減に中華ゲー〜' ("Seriously, Chinese games…"),
it can end up reading as one single garbled word.
    43AnonymousAug 27, 2026 08:59
The only reason people buy dedicated hardware to play games — objects that serve zero practical purpose — comes down to one thing: 'because it's fun.' There's no reason beyond that.

What I don't get is this mindset of 'they probably secretly want to play it but are stubbornly holding back.' If someone won't play a game they could just play on their phone, the only explanation is 'they're not interested' — there's nothing more to it.

For reference, Genshin's character polygon counts run about 20,000 for early characters, and only recently hit around 40,000 for newer ones.

Monster Hunter Rise's characters run 20,000-30,000 polygons, so quality-wise Genshin could run just fine on Switch — assuming you actually had proper optimization behind it, of course.

    106AnonymousAug 27, 2026 10:29
    Re: #103
Same old wordplay, right on schedule.

    Background and Key Points

Genshin Impact is HoYoverse’s free-to-play, gacha-monetized open-world RPG, released globally in 2020 on PS4/PS5, PC, mobile, and later PS5, but never on Switch — the game’s scale (the thread cites seven in-game “nations” and over 100 playable characters) is generally judged too demanding for Nintendo’s underpowered hardware without heavy compromise. The “Geha” board is 5ch’s hardware/console board, long known for anti-Nintendo sentiment, and “Nishi-kun” is board slang mocking Nintendo loyalists (from “任天堂,” Nintendo’s Japanese name). That framing explains why a thread urging Switch players to defect reads as trolling as much as genuine advocacy.

The disagreement wasn’t really “Nintendo vs. China” — most posters accepted Chinese-made games are now unavoidable on PlayStation’s charts. The real split was over Genshin specifically: whether it’s still worth recommending at all versus newer HoYoverse-adjacent titles, whether a short clip can convey what makes a heavily narrative, years-deep gacha game appealing to newcomers, and whether Genshin’s assets (20,000–40,000 polygons per character, per one poster) could realistically be ported to Switch even with optimization.

What outside readers will likely misread is the PlayStation Store chart claim. Free-to-play, gacha-funded titles topping PSN’s rankings reflects download counts, not necessarily revenue or sustained engagement — a distinction posters themselves raised (#71, #73) but never resolved. Similarly, the “kiddie game” jab backfires once you note the thread’s own claim that Genshin’s core audience skews 20s-30s while Nintendo’s skews toward players in their 40s and 50s — the opposite of what the age-based insult assumes.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “Hey Nishi-kun, why not ditch the kiddie games and accept Chinese games already? Genshin’s fun, you know?“

Now that streaming's unlocked and Spotify numbers are visible to everyone, there's something charming about the Song of the Year still being decided by a small group of otaku brute-forcing it with bloc voting — like real "public opinion."
    44AnonymousAug 27, 2026 10:30
But Spotify's only like 40% of the total anyway.
    46AnonymousAug 27, 2026 10:31
It used to be Morning Musume。's bloc vote against everyone else, but starting this year Juice=Juice's bloc vote joins in too.
    51AnonymousAug 27, 2026 10:33
More like a changing of the guard than "joining," really —
Morning Musume。's been weak for a while now.

    Background and Key Points

Hello! Project is the idol umbrella agency behind Morning Musume。, Juice=Juice, Tsubaki Factory, BEYOOOOONDS and several other girl groups, and its fan-run “Song of the Year” (ハロプロ楽曲大賞) has been held since 2002 — the first edition famously went to an album track by spinoff unit Tanpopo rather than a hit single, a detail one poster raised to show the award has never simply tracked sales. The winner isn’t chosen by critics or the music industry; it’s decided by devoted fan voting, and posters note the process has long been shaped by “bloc voting” (組織票), where a group’s fanbase organizes to push turnout — historically Morning Musume。’s base dominated, but commenters say Juice=Juice’s fans are now mobilizing at the same scale, effectively a changing of the guard.

The thread doesn’t converge on a single favorite. Kurakura☆Climax (Juice=Juice) and Wacha are treated as the closest head-to-head, with Tsubaki Factory’s new “Ai=Un+En+On” and Morning Musume。’s “Dantotsu” cited as dark horses; no clear consensus emerges, and several posters call the front-runners merely adequate rather than genuinely strong songs.

Readers should be careful not to mistake this for an official industry prize like the Japan Record Award — it’s an internal fan-community vote, which is exactly why YouTube view counts and bloc-voting tactics matter so much to the debate. Also worth flagging: one poster notes Spotify streaming data, despite now being publicly visible, only factors into roughly 40% of the outcome, meaning the rest of the vote remains opaque and driven by fan mobilization rather than raw listening numbers.

  • “Turn Your Crush Into a Porn Star”: Free AI Service Generates Fake Adult Videos From a Single Photo — Lawyer Says “No Law Can Stop It”

A free service that can swap faces onto adult video (AV) footage using just one photo of someone else is spreading online, boasting “over 300,000 cumulative users.” A lawyer points out that “currently there’s no law to crack down on this,” but on the forum thread, people debated legal interpretations like “wouldn’t this count as distribution of obscene material?” alongside others hunting for loopholes such as “it’s safe as long as you don’t publish it.”

There are even fears that AV videos could be generated without permission from old graduation album photos… (photo is an illustration) [Photo: PhotoAC]

A service that applies AI technology to generate AV videos from other people’s photos without permission is causing ripples online. Using AI face-swapping, the service lets users replace the face of an AV performer with that of any third party, and even offers a free plan. Its official site advertises “over 300,000 cumulative users” and emphasizes that it is a “reassuring, law-compliant service” offering “content that complies with regulations.” So how does this hold up legally? We asked for the view of attorney Kazuma Higuchi of Higuchi International Law Office, who is qualified to practice in both Japan and New York State.

With mature women, it's faster to just seduce them directly and sleep with them.

    Background and Key Points

“Turn Your Crush Into a Porn Star” isn’t the first face-swap deepfake tool to hit Japan, but the “300,000 users” figure and the explicit framing around AV (adult video, Japan’s mainstream commercial porn industry) mark a shift from novelty apps to purpose-built abuse tools. Japan currently has no dedicated deepfake law. The relevant statutes are scattered: the Act on Punishment of Activities Relating to Child Pornography doesn’t apply to adult subjects, obscenity is covered by Article 175 of the Penal Code (distribution of obscene material), and defamation or right-of-publicity claims require the victim to sue civilly, often after the fact. Attorney Higuchi’s comment that “no law can stop it” reflects this gap: creation for private use isn’t criminalized at all, and even distribution is legally ambiguous when the images are AI-generated composites rather than real footage of the victim.

The thread doesn’t split on whether this is bad — almost no one defends the service outright. It splits on where the line sits between “personal use” and “distribution.” Posters floated the idea that commissioning a custom video from someone else, even without publishing it, might already cross into circulating obscene material because the request itself involves an unspecified third party handling the images (post 57). Others insisted privately-generated, unshared content is untouchable (post 54), effectively betting on enforcement gaps rather than legality.

What the thread never addresses is scale: the “300,000 users” number is a marketing claim from the service itself, unverified by any outside source, and the article doesn’t say whether the site operates from Japan or abroad — which matters enormously, since Japanese police have no jurisdiction to compel takedowns from an overseas host, regardless of what Article 175 says.

Word was that at the time, the woman named in post Re: #1 was there with him

    Background and Key Points

Yokoyama Yasushi was one half of Yasushi-Kiyoshi, the manzai duo that anchored Yoshimoto Kogyo’s variety-show dominance from the 1970s through the 90s; Yoshimoto is Japan’s oldest and largest comedy agency, tracing back to 1912, and Yasushi’s “don’t get me started” catchphrase and boorish, tough-guy stage persona made him a defining figure of the era’s rough-and-tumble comedy style. He died in 1996 at 52, a detail that resonates in Japan because two other mid-century entertainment giants, actor Yujiro Ishihara and singer Hibari Misora, also died at exactly 52, both with drinking tied to their decline — a coincidence Japanese audiences of a certain age reflexively recall. Kimura Kazuya, his eldest son from his first marriage, had a minor career of his own as a child of a famous comedian, appearing in commercials and films, but never approached his father’s stardom.

The thread’s actual disagreement wasn’t really about the divorce itself — almost nothing concrete about the wife or the split’s specifics surfaces — but about lineage and inheritance: commenters debated whether Kimura even looks like his father, whether his volatile, drink-fueled behavior is a genetically “inherited” trait or simply the result of being raised undisciplined by a famous, indulgent parent whose real off-stage personality (quiet, hobbyist, compliant toward his own mentor) reportedly differed sharply from his public image.

What outside readers likely miss is that this speculation about biological paternity is a stock rhetorical device in Japanese online reactions to celebrity-offspring scandals, not evidence of any actual paternity dispute — Kimura’s parentage is not seriously contested, just mocked.

On August 25, KDDI and povo2.0 began offering 5G SA (Standalone) for the “Voice + Data” plan. The monthly fee is said to be free for now, but wording hinting at a future paid conversion, a SIM card reissue fee, and confusion over unclear naming when migrating to eSIM all drew attention on the thread.

On August 25, KDDI, Okinawa Cellular, and KDDI Digital Life began offering 5G SA for the “Voice + Data” plan under the online-only brand “povo2.0.” A compatible smartphone is required to use the service.

5G SA is a communication method that builds core equipment and base stations exclusively for 5G, without relying on 4G LTE infrastructure. Because it isn’t affected by congestion on the 4G LTE side, it makes high-speed, high-capacity communication easier to use. KDDI is rolling out 5G SA across its entire Sub6-compatible area, putting coverage at over 90%.

Existing povo2.0 users can also sign up, but reissuing a physical SIM card costs a 3,850 yen fee. The eSIM reissue fee is free for the time being. The monthly fee for 5G SA itself is currently free, but it may become an optional paid service in the future.

    Free? Well, obviously.
    5AnonymousAug 25, 2026 19:37
Ah, I guess all that penny-pinching really paid off.
    10AnonymousAug 25, 2026 21:52
Wait, it wasn't even 5G SA compatible until now?
    11AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:16
Are there any downsides to signing up for 5G SA?
Voice calls will still run over 4G, right?
    13AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:22
    Re: #11
Probably just the fee if it eventually becomes paid.
Basically, connecting via 5G SA just means faster speeds — I don't think there's any real downside.

    Re: #11
    > Are there any downsides to signing up for 5G SA?

One thing that's certain: this isn't just an "optional setting (subscription)" — you need an actual physical SIM swap.
Switching a physical SIM (pSIM) to 5G NSA requires a processing fee.

    > Voice calls will still run over 4G, right?

There's no sign of VoNR (Voice over New Radio) anywhere yet.

Same kind of confusion as with the KDDI SIMs that already offer 5G SA… compatibility issues, maybe? We'll have to wait for more reports.
    12AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:21
    Total runaway win.
Makes me want to go back to povo.
    14AnonymousAug 25, 2026 23:24
So it only works if you're on the plan that includes voice calls?
Well, I've got no complaints with what I have now, so it's fine either way.
    15AnonymousAug 25, 2026 23:52
5G drains the battery insanely fast, wish they'd cut it out.
    16AnonymousAug 26, 2026 00:48
As a die-hard 4G user, it'd honestly help if everyone else switched to 5G SA lol (less congestion for the rest of us)
    17AnonymousAug 26, 2026 01:53
Staying up all night until 9:30.
Can't wait for 5G SA, huff huff.
    19AnonymousAug 26, 2026 03:49
More importantly, add more payment methods already, damn it.
It's a top-up purchase system, so au PAY or something similar should work fine too.
    20AnonymousAug 26, 2026 05:58
    Re: #19
Don't you have a credit card?
    21AnonymousAug 26, 2026 05:59
KDDI finished clearing out its stock of 5G SA-incompatible devices, and since Rakuten Mobile doesn't support it, they announced this rollout.
An all-5G standalone network is something Rakuten Mobile should've been the one to pull off first — getting beaten to it must sting a lot.
    22AnonymousAug 26, 2026 08:27
I keep 5G turned off to save battery.
    23AnonymousAug 26, 2026 10:32
Turns out my neighborhood isn't even in the 5G Sub6 coverage area. Damn it.
    24AnonymousAug 26, 2026 12:10
5G SA is supposed to be what real standalone 5G service looks like,
yet they're clearly planning to charge extra for it as an option. Greedy.
    26AnonymousAug 26, 2026 15:17
Docomo also said at first it was a trial period so there'd be no 5G fee,
but once 5G actually spread, talk of charging for it just quietly disappeared.
    27AnonymousAug 26, 2026 18:39
Apparently X (Twitter) is currently in an uproar over this.
    28AnonymousAug 26, 2026 20:46
    Migrated from regular povo2.0 today.
It was eSIM to eSIM, and I figured the eSIM would just get overwritten, but instead it got installed into an empty slot labeled "Travel" — took me an hour of confusion to figure out what happened.
If you're about to do this, watch out.
If that empty eSIM slot already has a name on it, you won't notice, and you'll have a really rough time.
    35AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:12
    Re: #28
Assuming it would get overwritten is a bit odd, but
yeah, I see how that kind of trouble could happen.
    39AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:02
    Re: #28

That's just how iPhone works, isn't it?
The iOS on that device just assigns the new SIM a label from its existing list of candidate names, picking one that isn't already in use.

Also, weren't you asked something partway through that you just missed?
    29AnonymousAug 26, 2026 21:17
Sounds like you need to delete the old povo2.0 eSIM before activating the new 5G SA eSIM, or things get messy.
    30AnonymousAug 26, 2026 21:27
    Re: #29
    Exactly that.
It's not written in the instructions anywhere.
You can delete it afterward too, but then it shows up under the new eSIM.
If you'd renamed anything in your eSIM folder, it'll be totally confusing.
    31AnonymousAug 26, 2026 21:46
I use my povo SIM for calls,
but I've got 5G data turned off, so this is wasted on me, right?
    32AnonymousAug 26, 2026 21:50
I only ever use povo when I'm in a bind.
Also, I give my povo number out to people I'm not actually close with.
    33AnonymousAug 26, 2026 22:07
Doesn't really matter to someone like me who just buys a top-up once every six months to keep the line active.
    34AnonymousAug 26, 2026 22:14
Let's switch over while it's still free.
    36AnonymousAug 27, 2026 07:53
Checking the base station map, there isn't a single 5G SA-compatible base station anywhere near me.
And the only compatible devices are ridiculously expensive high-end smartphones.
Even if I wanted to use it, I don't have the environment for it.
    37AnonymousAug 27, 2026 08:00
KDDI only has about 40,000 SA-compatible 5G base stations nationwide right now.
    38AnonymousAug 27, 2026 08:19
My backup phone where I just buy a few-hundred-yen top-up every six months.
    40AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:13
It's weird that the Google Pixel 10a specifically doesn't support 5G SA.
UQ supports it, so it shouldn't be a hardware issue.

    Background and Key Points

povo2.0 is KDDI’s online-only, no-storefront SIM brand: there’s no monthly base fee, and users instead buy short-term data “topi-ups” to keep the line active, which is why several posters describe it as a backup number they top up every few months for a few hundred yen. KDDI is Japan’s #2 mobile carrier (au), and 5G SA (Standalone) means the network runs entirely on 5G core equipment and base stations rather than anchoring to existing 4G LTE, which is the current mainstream “5G NSA” setup used by most phones today. Rakuten Mobile, Japan’s newest carrier, built its network around all-IP/virtualized architecture and has long positioned itself as the SA pioneer, which is why poster >>21 frames KDDI’s move as an embarrassment for Rakuten.

The thread’s real disagreement isn’t over 5G SA’s usefulness but over whether “free for now” can be trusted: several posters point to the pSIM reissue fee and the vague “may become paid” wording as evidence this is a bait-and-switch, and >>26 explicitly recalls NTT Docomo doing the same “trial, no fee” framing for regular 5G before quietly walking away from the free promise once adoption grew.

What the thread never states plainly is that upgrading isn’t a toggle — it requires an actual SIM swap (paid for physical SIM, free for eSIM), and that voice calls still ride on 4G VoLTE since no VoNR support has been announced, so nothing about call quality changes. Readers may also overestimate coverage: KDDI cites “90% of Sub6 area” covered, but that’s only about 40,000 SA base stations nationwide, and Sub6 signals don’t propagate as far as the low-band spectrum used for standard 4G/5G NSA coverage.

  • Ano-chan Fractures Face in Two Places, Back on Set the Next Day — Face Swollen Like a Balloon, But ‘I’ve Got Guts!’

Artist Ano has revealed that despite fracturing two bones in her face, she showed up the very next day to film Nippon TV’s “Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru” (Ueda and the Howling Women). On 5ch, while many praised her for “having guts,” others speculated about her puffy, swollen face and the oversized glasses she never normally wears, questioning the details of the motorcycle accident and whether plastic surgery was involved.

Ano fractures face in two places → back on set the next day, face swollen like a balloon: “I’ve got guts!”

Artist and TV personality Ano appeared as a guest on the Nippon TV variety show “Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru” (airing the 26th, 9:00 PM).

Under the theme “Ditching work-life balance!? Career-obsessed women vs. rest-obsessed women,” she shared a jaw-dropping tale of professional grit that wouldn’t even let an injury slow her down.

Despite attacks from Sarina's die-hard fans, she's still on TV as much as ever.
    32AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:21
Well, let's just go with "it was an accident."
    35AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:21
Won't say who, but she's got way more goodwill than someone who cancels work at the last second and takes time off.
    36AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:22
She's still appearing on TV, sure, but I think her likability has dropped a lot.
Outside her fanbase, her antis have only grown.
    Same goes for Sarina.

Just like Jiro Sato or Ai Hashimoto — getting talked about at all just breeds more antis.

    39AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:23
In a few months she'll probably have had her jaw shaved down and end up with a nice clean face line. (implying jaw-reduction surgery)
    40AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:23
She's been really quiet since that whole incident.
She's turned into a talent with no distinguishing features at all.

The fact that she got into a motorcycle accident in the first place says it all.

Not that I have any way of actually knowing anything about her.

    71AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:33
    Re: #59
You really know your stuff! Old man.

    Background and Key Points

Ano is a musician who has become a fixture of Japanese TV variety shows in recent years, and “Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru” is a Nippon TV talk program where guests trade stories about work and personal life on air. Fracturing two facial bones is a serious injury by any standard, and returning to a live TV shoot the very next day — visibly swollen and in unfamiliar oversized glasses — is the kind of detail Japanese entertainment reporting tends to frame as a display of professionalism (“konjo,” or grit), a virtue prized in Japan’s showbiz culture where taking sick leave can be read as letting colleagues and fans down.

The thread didn’t split over whether the injury happened — most posters accepted a motorcycle accident occurred — but over whether the story as told adds up: several pointed out that a fracture severe enough to need recovery time typically comes with visible road rash, abrasions, or other trauma, and Ano’s face reportedly showed neither, just swelling and glasses she doesn’t normally wear. That gap is what fueled speculation she was covering for something else (a possible cosmetic procedure, or even an assault), rather than doubt about the “guts” narrative itself, which most commenters actually praised sincerely.

What outside readers may not catch is that this kind of skepticism is a recurring pattern in Japanese online reaction to celebrity injury stories — commenters frequently treat sudden facial swelling plus new eyewear as a stock signal for undisclosed surgery, not because of specific evidence here but because it’s a familiar trope applied to any young female talent whose appearance shifts. The thread also never mentions any actual medical detail (which bones, what the accident report says), leaving the entire “cover story” theory as pure inference from photos alone.
