  • Something’s Off With Shohei Ohtani: After Left Knee, Now Neck Discomfort Too — Two-Way Return in Doubt

With Shohei Ohtani mired in a slump — no home runs in 12 games since September began — he was left out of the starting lineup on the 3rd against the Cardinals for the first time in about a month. On top of the previously reported inflammation in his left knee, it has now emerged that he’s also dealing with neck discomfort, leaving his prospects for a late-season return to two-way duty up in the air. On 5ch, some worried about him pushing through and playing hurt, while others argued he should adjust his pitching schedule to rest up for the postseason — and plenty simply wondered how you even hurt your neck playing baseball.

“Something’s Off” With 32-Year-Old Ohtani… After Left Knee Inflammation, Now Neck Discomfort Too — This Season’s Two-Way Return in Doubt

As September brings the MLB regular season into its final stretch, something is wrong with Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani (32).

Still mired in a slump with no home runs in 12 straight games, he was pulled from the starting lineup on the 3rd against the Cardinals — his first time out of the lineup in about a month.

Fine to keep doing the two-way thing, but he should pitch on 8 days' rest or something.
And honestly, there are other pitchers on the roster — he didn't need to push himself like this.
He's the only guy who can do 50-50.

Maybe he's panicking because Yamamoto's about to steal his Cy Young?
    5AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:11
Best part of all this: no more "Ohtani harassment" (the endless flood of Ohtani-focused news coverage drowning out everything else).

    Now it's the neck-hurts-neck-hurts scam?

Watch him say all this and then go on a home run tear once the postseason starts.
    15AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:14
Guess the backlash from turning his whole body into a cyborg has finally caught up with him.

Murakami barely hits compared to Ohtani, but he's more fun to watch — drawing walks and still finding ways to factor into runs 😉
    22AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:16
Antis wanted to say the lineup flows better without Ohtani, but that run only scored because of the other team's error — kind of sad for them.
    25AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:17
Send him down to the minors already!!
I could hit better than that right now.
    27AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:17

The knee's bad, but the neck is way worse.
    There's a good chance it's nerve-related.
    53AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:25
For the sake of his future, wouldn't it be better if he properly rested up?
    54AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:25
The neck? How do you even hurt that playing baseball lol
    55AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:26
Itoi's pattern was left ankle leading to right knee.
Ohtani's is right ankle leading to left knee.
    56AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:26
His body's out of balance. Neck issues can really drag on if they go bad, so it'd be smart to hit the injured list and take even just two weeks to heal up properly. Counting backward from the World Series, there's still a long road ahead.

These days training machines and theory are advanced enough that you don't need anything like that.

    Background and Talking Points

Ohtani has remained in the rotation as a two-way player again this season, and the heavy toll of also handling baserunning and fielding on top of that has repeatedly come up for discussion. As for this new neck discomfort, some in the thread speculate that compensating for the knee threw off his posture and contributed to it — but it’s worth noting the team and Ohtani himself haven’t given any specific explanation, so this remains pure speculation from 5ch users. The thread split between critics arguing ‘he should report pain earlier’ and defenders countering that ‘some pain is just part of being a pro,’ with disagreement over whether he should prioritize rest now with the postseason in mind. Note also that a few posts speculated this is tied to next year’s WBC — that angle isn’t mentioned in the original article and remains unconfirmed conjecture.

  • Fukushima University Mockery Sparks YouTuber Firestorm — Hiroyuki: ‘Whoever Does It Wins’

On September 2, entrepreneur Hiroyuki gave his take during a YouTube livestream on the backlash facing the education-themed YouTube channel “wakatte.TV.” In an August 28 video, the group interviewed students at Fukushima University, and a cast member reportedly mocked a student who was presenting research on radioactivity, sparking criticism and a wave of protest calls to the university. Hiroyuki criticized the outrage-marketing approach, saying “it’s become a case of whoever does it first wins,” and reports noted he had voiced similar concerns two years earlier. On 5channel, reactions to his comment ranged widely — some pointed out the contradiction with Hiroyuki’s own style of commentary, others discussed Fukushima University’s actual admission difficulty, and still others raised concerns about the discriminatory undertones of the backlash.

    Re: #59
    >凸電 (totsu-den)
    What's that?

Background and key points of this topic

“wakatte.TV” is a YouTube channel known for a format in which its cast provoke guests by bringing up educational background, and what caused trouble this time was that a cast member mocked a Fukushima University student’s presentation on radioactivity research. In the past, the manga “Oishinbo” sparked controversy over its depiction of harmful rumors about Fukushima, and the thread noted concern that this incident could go beyond simple mockery over education and feed into prejudice against Fukushima. Meanwhile, Hiroyuki himself is known for having dropped out of university, and when a clip circulated of him shooting back “But you’re just a high school graduate, right?” at a debate opponent, the thread took it as ironic given how central educational background is to this whole affair. The debate over whether it’s acceptable to monetize controversy through outrage has long accompanied discussions of “nuisance YouTubers,” and Hiroyuki’s comments here are an extension of that ongoing debate.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geisokuho+) thread “Hiroyuki: “It’s become a case of whoever does it first wins” — his take on the education-themed YouTuber embroiled in controversy over mocking Fukushima University… a warning he’d already sounded two years ago.”

  • Edion’s PS5 Stock Narrows to Just the “Japanese DE Double Pack” — 5ch Asks “Is This a De Facto Withdrawal?”

Users on 5ch noticed that electronics retailer Edion’s online store now lists only one PS5 model in stock: the “Japanese-language-only DualSense Wireless Controller Double Pack” (CFIJ10032). Adding to the intrigue, the standalone listing for the PS5 Disc Drive has switched to reading “The selected item does not exist” — a display some posters say differs from Edion’s normal out-of-stock behavior. The thread connected this to the lack of any new PS5 hardware news at the previous day’s State of Play showcase and to Japan’s sluggish weekly sales figures, with opinions split between “this is effectively an exit from the Japanese market” and “it’s just routine inventory shuffling.” (Note: on 5ch, “名無しさん必死だな” — rendered here as “Anonymous” — is a running joke default username roughly meaning “Anonymous is desperate,” used automatically in this particular board’s threads.)

    41Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:42:29.36
Isn't this effectively a withdrawal from the domestic market?
They're only moving something like 6,000 units a week, and 'we just have a pile of unsold stock' is an awkward excuse to make.
It's basically sold out nationwide and they're not shipping more — Japan is being deprioritized.
Framing it as 'effectively withdrawing from the domestic market' gives them a cleaner excuse and lets everyone save face.
Better to just go with that story.
Either way, face is preserved as long as you don't think of it as an embarrassing flop everyone's laughing at.

    Re: #108
In that case the listed quantity doesn't drop.

    Background and Key Points

The PS5 Digital Edition (DE) is the disc-drive-less model, and it’s generally considered a harder sell in the Japanese market than the standard version. The Double Pack (CFIJ10032) mentioned in the thread is a spring-2026 variant bundled with two DualSense controllers, and it’s possible this model simply had limited distribution to begin with. As for the Disc Drive listing switching to “the selected item does not exist” — posts #108 and #109 point out that this differs from how the page normally behaves during a routine stockout, though the article’s available information isn’t enough to say definitively whether this is a simple shortage or a discontinuation. Figures like “roughly 6,000 units sold per week” and claims that Sony has scaled back new game development and marketing in Japan are speculation from the thread, not official statements, and should be read with that caveat. The absence of any new hardware or accessory announcements at the previous day’s State of Play was cited in the thread as further fuel for the speculation.

  • Overseas Amazon Bestseller Charts Split by Country: PS5 vs. Switch 2 — 5ch: “Losing even right after the price hike?”

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, a thread about overseas Amazon best-seller rankings for game consoles took off. In Canada, the PS5 ranked 3rd and the Switch 2 ranked 7th, and replies quickly piled on with rankings from the US and UK too, revealing a split between winners and losers depending on the country. The thread also broke into arguments over the reliability of sales-estimate site VGChartz, with posters divided on which data source to trust.

Background and key points of this debate

“Amaran” (Amazon’s bestseller ranking) is shaped by stock levels and temporary sales as much as by actual unit sales, so it’s premature to crown a winner by country based on ranking position alone. VGChartz, the sales-estimate site cited in the thread, is commonly referenced overseas, but questions about its accuracy have come up repeatedly. On pricing, while Japan is abuzz over the Switch 2 price hike, several posters note that in the US and Europe, Switch 2 remains cheaper than PS5 even now — so the regional price picture doesn’t necessarily line up the same way everywhere. Few countries publish actual unit-sales figures, and most of the comparisons here rely on the indirect proxy of rankings, which is worth keeping in mind while reading this thread.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry “Geha”) thread “[Sad News] Switch 2, after its price hike, starts losing to PS5 in overseas Amazon rankings“.

  • Kazunori Yamauchi’s Claim That ‘Lots of Families Enjoy GT7 Together’ Draws Skepticism on 5ch

Kazunori Yamauchi, the father of the Gran Turismo series at Polyphony Digital, sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha) after saying, ‘I think a lot of people enjoy Gran Turismo 7 together as a family.’ The thread quickly filled with responses like ‘no one does that’ and ‘most PS users are single middle-aged men,’ with some posters mockingly comparing it to his previously memed comment about ‘enjoying The Evil Within with his grandkids.’ Others brought up Astro’s Playroom winning a family-friendly award and compared the situation to Forza Horizon, leaving the thread divided over just how much of a family game GT7 really is.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Gran Turismo 7 is a racing simulator released in 2022 for PS5/PS4, and Kazunori Yamauchi has led the series for many years as its developer. The thread doesn’t specify where or when the comment was made, so the context is unclear. What divided opinion in the thread was the actual makeup of the PlayStation user base: while the self-deprecating notion that PS is ‘for single middle-aged men’ has become a running joke among users, most posters felt Yamauchi’s comment was out of touch with that reality. That said, it’s worth noting that PlayStation does have family-oriented titles, as shown by Astro’s Playroom winning a family-focused award. It’s also worth flagging that his earlier remark about ‘enjoying The Evil Within with his grandkids’ has been repeatedly cited as a running joke, even though its authenticity has never actually been confirmed.

The calendar is expected to be A2 size and priced at nearly 5,000 yen, prompting surprised reactions over the price hike, with posters recalling “these used to cost around 2,000 yen.” While bookstore perks include the calendar being handed to fans personally by Asakura and cheki (instant photo) sessions, the official site doesn’t specify whether there will be a handshake event or spell out other details, leaving fans to speculate. The calendar is also drawing attention as part of Asakura’s comeback activities after she left the entertainment industry to work as a pet groomer.

    Background and Key Points

Kigi Asakura is a former Morning Musume. member who once left the entertainment industry to work as a pet groomer before making a comeback. In the thread, a post asking “why did she quit being a groomer?” was answered with “because she wanted to get back into showbiz” — context worth spelling out for readers unfamiliar with her history. On the topic of the calendar’s price, many commenters compared it to Karin Miyamoto’s 2027 calendar (A2 size, 9 pages, ¥4,565 tax included), with plenty of surprise expressed over how prices have climbed from what they recall as roughly 2,000 yen in the past. It’s worth noting that the bookstore perks (cheki photo sessions, autograph events, etc.) are based solely on what’s currently listed on the official site, and details like whether there will be a handshake event remain unconfirmed, fueling ongoing speculation. Comments ranking Asakura’s standing as an agency “favorite” are unsubstantiated personal opinion and shouldn’t be read as fact.

  • US Company to Launch Probe Toward Alpha Centauri — 5ch Reacts: ‘See You in 80,000 Years’

Starcloud, a company building AI data centers in space, is developing humanity’s first interstellar probe through a nonprofit effort by its co-founders called “Fermi Explorer.” If all goes to plan, it will launch in 2029 and head for Alpha Centauri, the star system nearest our own — though it won’t arrive for roughly 80,000 years. The thread lit up with a wide range of reactions: disbelief at the almost incomprehensible travel time, half-joking doubts about whether humanity will even still exist by then, and genuine scientific questions about whether the expansion of the universe might affect the probe’s arrival.

Joe Hindy (CNET News) Translation/editing: Editorial staff, September 3, 2026, 6:44 AM

US-based Starcloud is a company that builds AI-focused data centers in space. Its co-founders — Philip Johnston, Adi Oltean, and Ezra Feilden — have launched a nonprofit mission called “Fermi Explorer.”

They’re developing humanity’s first interstellar probe, which, if all goes according to plan, will launch in 2029 and head toward Alpha Centauri, the star system closest to our own. However, it won’t arrive for roughly 80,000 years.

    3AnonymousSep 3, 2026 21:57
They're calling it an "interstellar spacecraft"…
but really the main point is just escaping the solar system. Doesn't look like it has any way to actually home in on Alpha Centauri, or any comms gear for once it's outside the solar system.

Will it really get there in 80,000 years?
    26AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:29
    Re: #11
Cosmic expansion only really starts to matter at much bigger scales — 10 million light-years or more.
Alpha Centauri is about a ten-millionth of that distance (and it still takes 80,000 years).
As long as you're inside the Milky Way's gravity well, expansion basically doesn't touch you.
    12AnonymousSep 3, 2026 22:32

Maybe it'll pick up space junk along the way, grow into something huge, get flung faster and faster through a string of accidental gravity assists, and then slam into a planet at Centauri as a giant meteor, wiping out any intelligent life there.

Figured it'd be a few hundred or a few thousand years, but 80,000? That's really slow lol
Feels like the probe would just break down along the way, though maybe there's less cosmic radiation since it's a neighboring star system.
Also, since it can't do reverse thrust at the end, if it ends up slamming into a planet, would it just burn up on arrival if there's an atmosphere?
    43AnonymousSep 4, 2026 12:31
A probe that's already doomed to be overtaken, and you can tell that even at the planning stage lol

How's a probe that small supposed to reach escape velocity in the first place?

    Background and Talking Points

Starcloud is a company originally known for its business building AI data centers in orbit; the interstellar probe project was launched separately by its co-founders as a nonprofit venture. The fact that this is a private, nonprofit effort rather than a national space agency effort ties into the question raised in comment #40 — “why isn’t a national government doing this?” It’s also worth knowing, as comment #7 points out, that earlier interstellar probe concepts like Breakthrough Starshot never actually made it to launch. As for the cosmic-expansion question raised in comment #11, comment #26 answers it: expansion only becomes a meaningful factor at distances on the order of 10 million light-years, and Alpha Centauri, at 4.37 light-years away, remains well within the Milky Way’s gravitational domain and is essentially unaffected — an easy point to get wrong. The probe also appears to lack any deceleration system, so even when it “arrives” in 80,000 years, it likely won’t be able to make a soft landing or enter orbit.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Sanseido Bookstore Ikebukuro Main Store was a large-format shop that had operated for years in the prime location directly connected to Ikebukuro Station, inside the Seibu Ikebukuro main store, and was distinctive for having its sales floor split between the book hall building and the department store’s annex. Opinions in the thread diverged over where to place the blame for the closure. Some pointed to structural factors like price hikes and the spread of e-books, while others got into a back-and-forth of specific numbers—wholesale rates, gross margins—debating whether the cost of shoplifting losses was squeezing the store’s finances, with no clear consensus reached. It was also notable that this closure was discussed against the backdrop of a string of shutdowns among long-established Tokyo bookstores, such as Shosen Book Mart in Jimbocho and the Sanseido Bookstore branch in Shimokitazawa. Note that what’s closing here is specifically the Ikebukuro Main Store location — the Sanseido Bookstore chain itself is not disappearing. Since the article’s text doesn’t spell this distinction out clearly, readers should be careful not to conflate the two.

    Not bad, right?

    Background and Discussion Points

Mikie Hara was active in gravure work and film/video projects like “Cutie Honey: The Live” during the 2010s, but there was a subsequent stretch with little media presence. In the thread, posts speculating about the reasons for her time away — theories like “she was blacklisted,” “she went abroad,” or “she’s a mistress” — stood out, but none of these are based on any official statement from her or her agency and remain baseless speculation. Also, an early reply claimed “She’s 40?”, which was later corrected in the thread to “Isn’t she 39?” — so there was some confusion over her exact age at the time of the birth. The only facts she has actually confirmed are two: the birth of her first child, and last year’s surprise marriage announcement. Everything else about her career discussed in the thread should be treated as unconfirmed speculation.

  • Auto Mechanic Job Openings Hit 5.46x Ratio — Severe Labor Shortage Persists Even With ¥3.47M Salary Offers

The effective job-openings-to-applicants ratio for auto mechanics has hit 5.46, and the severe labor shortage shows no sign of easing. Against an offered annual salary of ¥3.47 million, job seekers are asking for ¥5 million — a gap of ¥1.53 million. In a twist, veteran mechanics already earning over ¥5 million a year can actually end up with a pay cut if they switch jobs. Amid the contradiction of EVs demanding more specialized skills while pay fails to keep pace, commenters on 5ch debated several angles: customers who complain about labor charges but never about parts costs, the growing number of foreign mechanics, and whether EVs spell the end of the trade or make mechanics more essential than ever.

The auto mechanic industry faces a severe labor shortage, with an effective job-openings ratio of 5.46. Yet the offered annual salary of ¥3.47 million falls ¥1.53 million short of the ¥5 million applicants want, and there’s even a reversal effect where veterans earning over ¥5 million take a pay cut by switching jobs. Why does advancing technology demand more specialized skills while experienced expertise goes unrewarded? We dig into the structural issues in this licensed trade’s job market.

What happened to everyone who said wages go up when there's a labor shortage?
    76AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:30
    Re: #2
That whole "there's a labor shortage so they should just pay more" argument is completely wrong.

Raise wages and there's no profit left; raise labor rates and you lose customers — that's why the price is what it is.
    3AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:55

Mechanics get few days off a year, and work can suddenly pile up leading to brutal overtime.
There's no proper air conditioning so it's hell in summer and winter, plus you get unreasonable demands from trucking companies and the like.
My older brother, a former auto mechanic, said it was way too 💩 (crappy) and switched over to maintaining railway trains instead.

As a certification, that one's cost-performance is genuinely great.
Once you become a proper veteran, temp workers and independent contractors routinely clear ¥10 million a year.

Auto repair is a world where shops can basically claim whatever needs fixing and pile on repairs left and right, so why are wages still this low?

Heard that on Suzuki's new EV, the battery pack with all the auxiliary equipment attached weighs about 500kg when you take it out, so you need a special lift just to remove it.

    Re: #97
What I'm saying is: too many shops, so it's saturated → prices can't go up → wages stay low → nobody applies → the job-openings ratio goes up. That's the chain, right?
    102AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:52
    Re: #100
I don't get how that "so" follows.
    That's completely wrong.
    103AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:54
    Re: #100
Even if I grant you the "nobody applies" part, doesn't it seem insane that these shops keep posting job openings even though the industry's oversaturated and there's no work to go around?

Background and Key Points of Discussion

The effective job-openings-to-applicants ratio is a figure calculated by dividing the number of job openings by the number of job seekers; the further it exceeds 1, the more severe the labor shortage is considered to be. In the case of auto mechanics, it’s a licensed profession requiring years of hands-on experience to qualify, yet price competition on labor charges makes it structurally hard for profit margins to rise. Opinions in the thread split over the claim that “if there’s a labor shortage, a high job-openings ratio must mean the number of shops is oversaturated” versus pushback against that logic — the discussion never fully untangled how a simple supply-demand shortage and deeper industry-structure problems are intertwined. On EVs, views were split right down the middle between “this is a job that’s losing its need for specialized knowledge” and “it’s precisely because of complex electronic controls that mechanics are essential” — but both sides were really just speculating based on a handful of specific models, and readers should keep in mind that neither view represents a confirmed picture of where the industry as a whole is headed.
