  • Yakushimaru Hiroko & Matsuda Yusaku’s ‘The Detective Story’ Streaming Free on YouTube Starting October 2

Kadokawa Pictures’ The Detective Story (1983) has been confirmed for free streaming on the YouTube channel “Kadokawa Cinema Collection” from 20:00 on October 2 through 19:59 on October 16. Starring Yakushimaru Hiroko as a college student and Matsuda Yusaku as a down-and-out detective, it’s a bittersweet romantic suspense story based on the novel by Akagawa Jiro. On the 5ch Geinou/Sports News+ thread, nostalgic posts poured in comparing the film to other Kadokawa releases from the same era — Sailor Suit and Machine Gun, The Tragedy of W, and The Targeted School — along with trivia about the cars and motorcycles of the time, and talk of how well Matsuda Yusaku is still remembered since his death.

The hit film The Detective Story, starring Yakushimaru Hiroko and Matsuda Yusaku, has been confirmed for free streaming on YouTube. It will be available on the YouTube channel “Kadokawa Cinema Collection” for a limited two weeks, from 20:00 on Friday, October 2 through 19:59 on Friday, October 16. A slightly bittersweet romantic suspense story about a college student and an unimpressive detective who get tangled up together by chance. Based on the novel by Akagawa Jiro.

    [Story]

Arai Naomi is a college student summoned by her father, set to leave for America in a week. Now that the time has come, she’s starting to have second thoughts. Noticing her unease, Hasenuma, her father’s former secretary, hires a detective named Tsujiyama to act as her bodyguard. To Naomi, this man in his thirties is the picture of a hopeless old fogey. Even as his persistent tailing wears her down, she starts to notice a clumsy, very human warmth in him. Then a major incident erupts around Tsujiyama: his ex-wife Sachiko, suspected of killing the heir to a yakuza family, comes running to his apartment for shelter. With yakuza enforcers closing in, the three of them manage to escape thanks to Naomi’s quick thinking. Once they finally make it back to her house and hear Sachiko out, Naomi believes in her innocence — and, driven by her sense of justice and a bit of a taste for adventure, decides to hide her at home while she and Tsujiyama go looking for the real culprit together. Before long, Naomi realizes she’s strangely drawn to Tsujiyama. “No way, that old fogey. He’s way too old for me, and we don’t even match in height… but still…”

Matsuda Yusaku managed to hang on to some relevance through the Heisei era, but once Reiwa rolled around he became a completely forgotten figure of the past.
Though it's not just him — Ishihara Yujiro and Misora Hibari became relics of the past too.

    Background and talking points

This film was released in 1983, based on a novel by Akagawa Jiro, and produced by Kadokawa Haruki Office as one of its “Kadokawa Pictures” — a series built around pairing Yakushimaru Hiroko with Matsuda Yusaku. The same title, The Detective Story, was also used for a TV drama starring Matsuda Yusaku that aired in 1979, but the two share neither story nor source material, so they’re easy to mix up. On the thread, the movie version was the main topic, drawing plenty of posts comparing it to other Kadokawa films from the same period, like Sailor Suit and Machine Gun, The Tragedy of W, and The Targeted School. Kadokawa films of that era were built on a strategy of pairing a leading actress’s idol appeal with the name recognition of the original novel, and Yakushimaru Hiroko, Harada Tomoyo, and Watanabe Noriko were at the center of that approach. Opinions in the thread split between nostalgic affection for the film and the view that it was actually pretty thin on substance — not a simple like-it-or-hate-it divide. Some comments noted that Matsuda Yusaku’s name recognition has faded since his death, though this came up more as a remark on generational turnover than a judgment of the actor himself.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Yakushimaru Hiroko & Matsuda Yusaku co-star — Free YouTube streaming of the film ‘The Detective Story’ confirmed, starting October 2 at 20:00.”

  • Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi Claps Back at ‘Too Old-Man’ Radio Talk Criticism — 5ch: ‘Sea-Monkeys Are Still a Thing’

Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi pushed back on Nippon Broadcasting’s “All Night Nippon” against a listener email claiming the conversation was “too old-man, nothing’s getting across.” On the show, Yamaguchi had been reminiscing about nostalgic items from his youth like Korokoro Comic, Comic BomBom, and Sea-Monkeys, when another listener chimed in with “that’s what you’d call a generation gap.” On the 5ch Entertainment/Sports News Flash+ board, users debated the article covering this exchange, split over whether the facts even held up — since shrink-plastic crafts and Sea-Monkeys are apparently still sold today — and over whether there’s really a generational divide in enjoying an older guy’s nostalgic stories.

On the September 1 broadcast of “Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi All Night Nippon” (Nippon Broadcasting), Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi pushed back against an email calling the conversation “too old-man.”

Earlier in the show, prompted by an email from a junior-high-age listener, Yamaguchi had rattled off one nostalgic topic after another from his own childhood — things like Korokoro Comic, Comic BomBom, and Sea-Monkeys.

Then another listener wrote in: “The conversation is way too old-man. Nothing’s getting through. Sorry, but this is what they call a generation gap.”

They went on: "The second a middle-aged guy takes interest in what young people are into, the trend dies on the spot! Once an old guy gets close, the boom is over! Maybe we should just get into everything you kids are into and kill it for you!" — that was a pretty funny take.

    Background and Points of Contention

Sea-Monkeys and shrink-plastic crafts (plastic sheets shaped and shrunk in a microwave) were popular items in the 1980s and ’90s, and the criticism in the article centers on a generational divide — the so-called “jenegya” (generation gap). But several replies pointed out that both Sea-Monkeys and shrink-plastic sheets are still ordinary products sold today, suggesting the topic may not be as dated as the critical listener assumed. Opinion in the thread split between those who see it as natural to build up generational knowledge by listening to older people reminisce, and those who argue the streaming generation has come to expect content tailored to them — a divide that could reflect the gap between one-way radio and the two-way, on-demand online broadcasts younger listeners grew up with. For the details of exactly how Yamaguchi responded on air, see the original article.

  • Ramen Jiro’s New Rule: Large Portions Only for Customers Who Can Finish in 15 Minutes

Ramen Jiro’s Kyoto location announced on its official X (formerly Twitter) account that it had received a report of someone believed to be one of its customers vomiting nearby. After reviewing security camera footage, the shop identified the customer as a student who had come in with three friends the day before, ordered a large portion, and taken over 40 minutes to finish it. The shop said that going forward, it will only serve large portions to customers who can finish them within 15 minutes. On 5ch, opinions split: some argued the time limit would only push people to eat too fast and make them sicker, while others said the real problem was customers ordering more food than they could handle in the first place.

    Good morning.
We received a report this morning that one of our customers was vomiting nearby. After checking our security cameras, we found it was a group of four who appeared to be students — they came in yesterday, ordered the large portion, and took over 40 minutes to eat it.

There are people who can't tell the difference between being yelled at, being cautioned, and being given an explanation

    Background and Points of Debate

Jiro-style ramen is known for a culture built around long lines and finishing every bite, and for years there’s been an unspoken rule that once you choose the large portion, you’re not supposed to leave any behind. In this Kyoto shop’s actual post, the text clearly states “if it’s too much, please feel free to leave some” (see comment #19) — a detail that’s easy to miss, since this isn’t simply a forced time limit. The thread split between those who argued a 15-minute limit would only encourage fast eating and make people sicker, and those who felt the real issue was customers who chose to order more than they could handle. Jiro-style ramen tends to get talked about more for its sheer portion size than its flavor, and it’s long been noted that customers unfamiliar with the style often misjudge how much to order the first time.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Harupuro board) thread “Ramen Jiro: “We received a report that a customer of ours was vomiting nearby. Going forward, the ‘large portion’ will only be for those who can finish it within 15 minutes”.”

  • Tunnels’ Kinashi Noritake Roof-Sitting Controversy: Rapper ACE Laments ‘I Miss the BIG3 Era’

On the April 25 broadcast of ABEMA’s show “Kinashi Record,” Tunnels’ Kinashi Noritake climbed onto the roof of guest rapper SHO’s gold Mercedes-Benz, laughingly banging on the bodywork and saying, “Oh, this dents, doesn’t it?” On September 3, fellow rapper ACE weighed in on X, saying “both hip-hop and comedy have gotten so small-minded” and “this has become an era where I miss the BIG3,” sparking a wave of discussion. On 5ch, some pointed out that in the actual footage SHO himself had invited Kinashi over, saying “It’d look cool if you sat here” — leading to a split between those defending the incident (citing that repair costs and an appearance fee were covered) and those criticizing it as “Showa-era sensibilities that don’t fly anymore.”

    9/3 (Thu) 4:27 PM

Rapper ACE posted on X on the 3rd, commenting on the controversy surrounding Tunnels’ Kinashi Noritake (64), who climbed onto the roof of fellow rapper SHO’s car during a joint TV appearance.

The scene in question is from an episode of ABEMA’s “Kinashi Record,” streamed on April 25. Kinashi climbed onto the roof of the gorgeous gold Mercedes-Benz belonging to guest SHO, laughing as he thumped the bodywork with a dull thudding sound and said, “Ah, this dents, doesn’t it?” SHO, meanwhile, looked visibly tense, saying, “That might be a little dangerous…”

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“BIG3” is a nickname for the trio that has topped Japan’s comedy world since the late Showa era, and there’s a cultural backdrop in which rough, body-on-the-line horseplay was tolerated as a form of affectionate teasing (“kawaigari”). ACE’s comment reflects nostalgia for that era’s atmosphere, but as some in the thread pointed out, it’s easy to overlook that Takeshi and Sanma themselves have recently dismissed car-wrecking gags as outdated — meaning the “BIG3” image ACE idealizes doesn’t quite match how the people involved see things today. It’s also hard to tell from the article alone that, while the show aired in April, ACE’s comment and the resulting online debate only took off in September — nearly half a year later. Taken in isolation, the roof-climbing scene looks high-handed, but the fact that SHO himself encouraged Kinashi to get on the car is an important piece of context driving the split in opinion.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geisokuho+) thread “Rapper ACE on Kinashi Noritake’s ‘Roof-Sitting’ Controversy: ‘Both hip-hop and comedy have gotten so small-minded,’ ‘I miss the BIG3 era’”.

  • Ex-NHK Announcer Anna Nakagawa Reports Groping on Train — Some Ask “Why Not Call the Police?”

Anna Nakagawa (32), a former NHK announcer now working as a freelancer, updated her X (formerly Twitter) account on September 4th, revealing an unpleasant incident of physical contact she experienced on a train. She said a man sitting next to her pretended to be dozing off while letting his arm hang down and positioning his hand near the gap between her thighs, recalling how “it sent a chill down my spine” at the time. The post drew a wave of sympathy on a 5ch thread, but reactions were split — some argued she “should have reported it to the police before posting on social media,” while others suggested the close quarters of a packed train may have led to a misunderstanding.

Former NHK announcer, now freelance, Anna Nakagawa (32) updated her X (formerly Twitter) account on the 4th, writing about receiving inappropriate contact from a male passenger on a train and revealing that “it sent a chill down my spine.”

Nakagawa explained the situation at the time: “The man sitting next to me on the train was asleep and kept nearly leaning against me a few times, but that part didn’t really bother me.” However, she said there was then “suspicious behavior” — “he suddenly let his arm go limp and positioned it so his hand ended up between his and my thighs.”

    Background and Points of Debate

Public figures disclosing groping incidents on social media is nothing new these days, and the thread itself brought up Rena Yamazaki’s remarks as an example of similar experiences being shared elsewhere. Part of the backdrop here is that groping cases are notoriously hard to prosecute unless the offender is caught in the act, and reporting to police after the fact often fails to lead to identifying the culprit. Some in this case asked “why not go to the police,” but the original article never actually states whether she filed a report or not — so assuming she just suffered in silence simply because she spoke up on social media would be premature. At the same time, inferring intent from something as subjective as “the movement of his eyes” involves elements that are hard to treat as hard evidence, and that gap between the lived experience and how convincing it reads to outsiders is part of why posts like this tend to split opinion.

In their case it's less about Japanese devotees and more that they got discovered worldwide
language-independent comedy bits are strong like that

Background and key points of this discussion

Big Small’n originally worked as a two-man comedy duo, but an enthusiastic fan became their apprentice and officially joined in 2019, turning the group into a trio. Guri, whose marriage was reported this time, is the member who joined later. On the forum, the dominant reactions were things like “I thought they were a duo” and “when did they become three?” — with more surprise directed at the group’s changing lineup than at the marriage itself. It was also noted that their YouTube channel has over 2.5 million subscribers and more than 2.9 billion total views, prompting further surprise that they’ve maintained such high name recognition despite a relatively low TV profile in recent years. Rather than commenting on Katrina’s marriage itself, the thread’s focus was largely on the group’s origins and career trajectory. It’s also known — from her own remarks on a TV program — that she started doing impressions after an experience she had working at a diner following her junior high graduation.

  • Student Stops Attending School After Being Called ‘Gross’ and ‘Ugh’ During Cooking Class — 5ch: ‘Adults’ Vocabulary Is Just as Dead’

A thread on 5ch’s News Speed+ board is buzzing over an article claiming a student stopped attending school after being hit with words like “gross,” “ugh,” and “it’s totally over” during a junior high cooking class. The original piece, distributed by news.livedoor.com, argues that children’s poor vocabulary is fueling emotional outbursts and interpersonal trouble. Commenters were split: some agreed that “kids don’t read, so their vocabulary is a disaster,” while others pushed back with “adults’ vocabulary is just as dead” and “this isn’t really about smartphones — it’s a class issue that predates them.” Several posters also chimed in with trivia noting that the word “yabai” (roughly “yikes”/”crazy”) itself dates all the way back to the Edo period.

If children can’t put their feelings into words, the stress either explodes into an emotional outburst, or they give up, thinking “nobody understands me” or “there’s nothing I can do.” As a result, they can’t work through the problem in front of them and move forward.

Kids today tend to describe everything with extreme words like “yabai” (yikes), “uzai” (annoying), “kimoi” (gross), and “egui” (brutal). But when trouble arises, just repeating “yikes, yikes” changes nothing. It doesn’t help them think through solutions, communicate their feelings, or understand others.

“A breakdown in children’s language directly reflects a breakdown in their lives. Kids can’t understand each other, can’t express their own feelings, can’t consider others’ feelings, and can’t cooperate as a group. All of this stems from a breakdown in language.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The original article, distributed by news.livedoor.com, argues that children’s poor vocabulary undermines their ability to express emotions and resolve conflicts — but it gives no specifics on which school this happened at or what exactly occurred, and no survey data backing up a causal link to school refusal. On the thread, laments over declining vocabulary among young people ran alongside pushback like “adults are just as bad” and “this is about family environment and class, not smartphones,” splitting opinion between those who blame generational or technological shifts and those who point to the educational environment. There was also plenty of trivia about the origins of the word “yabai” (including the Edo-period “yaba” archery galleries), with some noting that expressing emotion in strong language isn’t necessarily a uniquely modern phenomenon. At the same time, skepticism toward the original article’s lack of specifics — “don’t take sob-story articles at face value” — also surfaced, offering a counterpoint to taking the article’s claims at face value.

  • Hana to Yume Accidentally Reprints Manga That Already Ran, Publisher Hakusensha Apologizes — 5ch: “How Do You Not Notice Until It’s Printed?”

On September 4, publisher Hakusensha announced that the latest issue (No. 19) of the shojo manga magazine Hana to Yume had accidentally reprinted “Nekomata from America” by Konohana Takami with the exact same content as a previous issue, and apologized to readers and the author. The company cited an editorial mishap as the cause. On 5ch, threads filled with questions about how such an error could make it all the way to print, with reactions split between comparisons to past similar mistakes and debate over whether the editor in charge had actually checked the manuscript.

    Fri, Sep 4, 12:59 PM

Hakusensha announced on its official website on the 4th that an error had occurred in issue No. 19 of the shojo manga magazine Hana to Yume, released that same day, in which a previously published work was mistakenly run again.

The work in question is “Nekomata from America” by Konohana Takami. The editorial department explained that due to an editing mishap, the piece — already published once before — was printed a second time.

For Hana to Yume, about all I remember is Patalliro! and Glass Mask
Oh, and more recently there's Please Save My Earth too — that's Hana to Yume, right?

    Background and Key Points

Between submission and publication, magazines normally go through multiple checkpoints — color proofs and final proofs reviewed by the editor in charge and by copy editors. This error suggests that somewhere along that process, data from a past issue was reused or overlooked, though Hakusensha’s announcement doesn’t specify the exact cause. The “back-to-back reprinting” of Fullmetal Alchemist’s finale that came up in the thread was actually a deliberate rerun by the editorial staff after the issue sold out — a different situation in nature from today’s plain mistake, and one that’s easy to conflate with it. Meanwhile, the side chat about how to read “既出” (kishutsu, “already posted”) is an unrelated tangent that should be read separately from the article’s real subject: the problems with the magazine’s editorial checks. It’s also worth noting that a comment claiming Hana to Yume has a circulation of around 40,000 copies is just a reader’s guess, not an official figure.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisports Sokuho+) thread “Latest issue of Hana to Yume reprints manga that already ran — Hakusensha editorial apologizes to readers and author, vows to prevent recurrence.”

Following a fire at a shopping street in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, discussion has broken out on 5ch’s Hello! Background and Key Points of This Topic

Symphonia Technology Hibiki Hall’s official website appears to show all reservations and usage information suspended until September 14, and ticket sales for another event scheduled at the venue around the same time are also listed as postponed or under adjustment. Meanwhile, as of September 4, no announcement of cancellation or postponement has been confirmed from the organizers regarding Angerme’s autumn tour stop in Ise — thread opinion was split between those who suspected it might just be an auto-scheduled post and those who took the continued ticket sales as confirmation the show would go on. Accounts of the fire damage also conflict, with some claiming it was limited to the exterior wall and others saying it reached the dressing room and rehearsal room; no official statement on the extent of the damage had been confirmed at the time of writing. This remains a case where an official announcement is still needed.

  • Which Actresses-Turned-Singers Scored Multiple Hits in Both Fields? 5ch Says ‘Miho Nakayama Might Be Unbeatable’

A thread on 5ch asking “which female celebrities have had multiple hits both as singers and as actresses” took off. Alongside names like Hiroko Yakushimaru, Momoe Yamaguchi, Tomoyo Harada, Yuki Saito, and Kyoko Koizumi, posters brought up a wide range of generations, including Akina Nakamori, Momoko Kikuchi, Haruka Fukuhara, Yuki Uchida, Arisa Mizuki, Kou Shibasaki, Ryoko Shinohara, Yumiko Takahashi, and Noriko Sakai. Miho Nakayama, who boasts a track record of dramas averaging over 20% ratings and multiple million-selling singles, drew particular praise as “the strongest if you mean genuine success in both fields.” Meanwhile, opinions split over whether Arisa Mizuki’s and Yumiko Takahashi’s songs could really be called “hits,” making where to draw the line on what counts as a hit a central point of debate.

That one actress with the "natural airhead" image (tennen) who had a hit duet song

Peer pressure is the worst! No wonder people become anti-fans lol
I've supported all kinds of group idols before, but I've never experienced that kind of thing among fellow fans — quite the rare experience lol

My gut feeling is that people like that tend to show up a lot on 'Minasan no Okagedeshita' — that type meshes well with Tonneruzu

    Dramas averaging over 20% ratings
    Multiple million-selling singles

If it's just one hit, there are plenty of candidates

Ryoko Shinohara had like 3 hit songs
It's just that the one written by Shigesato Itoi sold way too well and overshadowed the rest

Wait, you don't know Yumiko Takahashi?
Those were all massive hits lol

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Hiroko Yakushimaru and Tomoyo Harada belong to a generation that was at the heart of the 1980s Kadokawa Films business model, in which a film’s leading actress would also sing its theme song — releasing the movie and the record as hits simultaneously was the standard star-making playbook of the era. Add in the common practice of casting actresses to sing TV drama theme songs, and it wasn’t unusual back then for an actress to also top the charts as a singer. Today, idol, actress, and singer careers have become far more specialized — the thread even saw comments about Nogizaka46 members sticking out awkwardly in acting roles — suggesting it’s grown harder to succeed at “double duty.” The debate split over where to draw the line on what counts as a “hit”: whether to weight hard numbers like viewership ratings and million-selling singles, or the broader name recognition of a signature song.
