  • JMA: ‘M9.9 Alert Wasn’t a Cyberattack’ — 5ch: ‘That’s Even Worse, LOL’

On October 16, 2026, an earthquake early warning from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reporting a magnitude 9.9 quake set off alerts on smartphones nationwide, sparking an uproar on 5ch. The figure would have been the largest ever recorded, and the fact that Yahoo! Search was briefly unreachable around the same time fueled suspicions of a cyberattack. After the alert went out, the JMA explained that it had not suffered a cyberattack. On 5ch, discussion continued over the cause and fallout, including speculation that the system had mistakenly merged a minor tremor near Hokkaido with an earthquake near the Kamchatka Peninsula into a single event, reports that the Yamanote Line had stopped, and accounts of the alert sounding differently on iPhone versus Android.

JMA says it has not suffered a cyberattack

Generating the energy of an M9.9 quake would require a fault tens of thousands of kilometers long — about the length of the Earth's circumference — to rupture all at once.

Did they misread 6.9 as 9.9?
That would mean a human was eyeballing the number before issuing the alert.
What era are we living in?
This is supposed to be judged automatically by the system.
It wouldn't be surprising if the JMA got hit by a cyberattack, so they should just come clean about it.

    126AnonymousOct 16, 2026 14:36
At the same time, there was an intensity-1 tremor near Hakodate,
and the system judged it to be the same event as an M6.9 earthquake at 150km depth near the Kamchatka Peninsula,
which produced an M9.9 reading centered on Etorofu Island.

There was a similar case before, where separate earthquakes off Wakayama and near Toba were misjudged as one event, and the epicenter came out as Nara.
This kind of thing happens because the system prioritizes speed over accuracy, so false alarms are bound to occur.

An M9.x quake happens somewhere in the world often enough that it actually makes me go dead serious.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s Earthquake Early Warning system works by having sensors automatically detect shaking, with the system judging it in real time and prioritizing speed of notification over accuracy. Because of this, there have been past cases where multiple separate earthquakes were mistakenly merged into a single massive one. Many on the thread believed that this time, an intensity-1 tremor near Hakodate was combined with a nearly simultaneous earthquake near the Kamchatka Peninsula, producing a calculated magnitude of 9.9 — surpassing the Great Chilean Earthquake (M9.5), the largest ever recorded. The JMA’s statement that it “did not suffer a cyberattack” only denies unauthorized outside access; it does not rule out a misjudgment by the system itself. Conflating the two can easily lead to the mistaken idea that “if it wasn’t an attack, then everything’s fine.” Opinion on the thread was split between those pointing out how sloppy the detection logic is and those arguing that a false alarm causes less real-world harm than an actual cyberattack would.

  • Pan-kun from ‘Genius! Shimura’s Zoo’ Turns 25 — 5ch: ‘When His Face Turns Black, That’s the Sign He’s About to Go Feral’

Pan-kun, the chimpanzee who won nationwide popularity on the TV show ‘Genius! Shimura’s Zoo,’ appeared alongside his longtime trainer Atsushi Miyazawa in ABEMA’s documentary series ‘NO MAKE,’ and the revelation that he’s now 25 years old became a hot topic. In August 2012, right after a stage show, Pan-kun bit a 20-something female trainee, leaving her with injuries that took months to heal, and he retired from performing on the spot. Online, talk has spread that he’s ‘gone feral’ or ‘turned violent,’ but on 5ch opinion split over whether this is simply a natural change due to age or a failure of management on the zoo’s part.

    2026-10-15 07:05

Pan-kun, the chimpanzee who became a national sensation on shows like ‘Genius! Shimura’s Zoo,’ and his longtime trainer, animal trainer Atsushi Miyazawa, appeared together in ABEMA’s original up-close documentary series ‘NO MAKE.’

Born in October 2001, Pan-kun was hand-raised from shortly after birth. Animal trainer Miyazawa became his adoptive caretaker when Pan-kun was two, and from 2004 he appeared on ‘Genius! Shimura’s Zoo,’ where his perfectly-timed back-and-forth with comedian Ken Shimura, plus segments running errands alongside the bulldog James, made him a beloved national celebrity.

You guys are even less intelligent than a chimpanzee 🥺

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The reason Pan-kun is being called ‘violent’ traces back to a real incident at Aso Farm Land’s Cuddly Dominion in August 2012. Right after a performance, he bit a 20-something female trainee and left her with injuries that took months to heal, after which he retired from the stage entirely. What split opinion on the thread was whether to view this as ‘a natural change that comes with age’ or as ‘a failure of management on the zoo’s part’ — some posters even defended him, suggesting he was simply recognizing Miyazawa as his alpha and disciplining him accordingly. One easy point of confusion is that phrases like ‘gone feral’ or ‘turned violent’ tend to take on a life of their own and fuel a worse image, even though it’s a well-documented biological fact that male chimpanzees grow stronger and more territorial as they reach sexual maturity. Rather than seeing this as some unique change specific to Pan-kun, it’s easier to understand as a case where traits inherent to the species simply surfaced within the context of being hand-raised by humans.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou-Sports Express+) thread ‘[Genius! Shimura’s Zoo] ‘Genius chimp’ Pan-kun’s trainer left puzzled by online claims he’s ‘gone feral’ or ‘turned violent’ — now 25 years old [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].’

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Koda Kumi previously sparked controversy by discussing the risks of giving birth at an older age on the radio and elsewhere, using the term “amniotic fluid.” Her giving birth at 43 this time has drawn comparisons to those past remarks, splitting opinion in the thread between those who see it as “her past comments coming back to bite her” and those defending her by noting “this is her second child, so the situation is different.” While the risks of giving birth at an older age are medically real, there’s no fixed consensus on what age counts as “advanced maternal age,” nor can individual risk levels be generalized — so treating one celebrity’s remark as a universal truth can easily be misleading. Note that this article excludes posts that directly disparage her age or appearance, or that mock medical risks such as chromosomal abnormalities.

  • Theater Girls’ Troupe Cancels Show at the Last Minute — 5ch: ‘Not Even COVID Did This’

The theater troupe Engeki Joshibu has announced that performances of its stage play “TIME REPEAT” will be cancelled from Friday, October 16 through Monday, October 19. According to its official X account, the cause appears to be an illness, with reports suggesting several cast members who had been rehearsing together may have fallen sick. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, posters reacted with shock, noting that “not even during the COVID pandemic was there a cancellation this massive,” while others expressed concern for fans who had already traveled to the venue. Worry also spread about the impact on the remaining schedule, and the thread buzzed with speculation over the scale and cause of the cancellation.

There's also a chance she picked it up at school

    Background and Key Points

Cancellations of Hello! Project stage performances are rare, and as noted in the thread, even at the height of the COVID pandemic there was never a cancellation on this scale. This time, an illness appears to have broken out among cast members who had been rehearsing together, raising concerns that it could spread easily given their close communal environment. The thread is split between those who think “multiple people may be infected” and those who think “this was cancelled over just one person being sick,” and the actual scale isn’t made clear by the official announcement. Some posters also recalled past cases where an absent performer’s role was covered by a livestream instead, though whether that applies here is unknown. At this point there is no definitive information on the cause or scale, so this remains firmly in the realm of speculation.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Engeki Joshibu “TIME REPEAT” — Notice of Performance Cancellation, Friday October 16 through Monday October 19.”

  • 5ch live-thread viewers react to earthquake alert: “Glad it was a false alarm”

On 5ch’s “Everything Live Thread G” board, an earthquake warning alert prompted the creation of a live-commentary thread. Riffing on the thread starter’s rallying cry — “No shaking here, come on in🏡” — the regulars dove into conspiracy-flavored banter like “sounds like an artificial earthquake,” traded memories of what they were doing the moment the 3.11 earthquake (the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake) hit, and shared Halloween costume photos. Eventually a post linking to another thread announced “So glad it was a false alarm!!!”, revealing that the warning itself had been a false report, and the thread settled into relieved, relaxed chatter.

    Background and Key Points

5ch’s “Everything Live Thread G” board is known for spinning up live-commentary threads whenever breaking news hits — earthquakes, accidents, and the like — with information and casual chatter unfolding side by side. In this thread too, talk of “artificial earthquakes” — the idea that quakes can be triggered deliberately through tectonic plate manipulation or nuclear tests — made the rounds, but this is a conspiracy theory with no scientific basis; seismology has no technology capable of triggering crustal movement on demand. That’s reflected in the thread itself, where someone immediately shot back, “There’s no such thing as an artificial earthquake.” Posts also surfaced asking people to recall 3.11 (the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake), prompting a wave of replies about what everyone was doing at the time — a familiar pattern for these live threads, though readers may easily conflate it with this particular warning, which wasn’t tied to any actual disaster. In the end, a link to another thread revealed that the alert had been a false report, capturing the mix of tension and relief typical of these real-time threads.

  • Overseas take: ‘You’ll drop $500 on gacha but complain about a $35 DLC?’ — reactions split

A post from overseas pointing out that “people who pour $500 into a free-to-play gacha game turn around and complain about a $35 DLC that adds 100 hours of content” went viral on X (formerly Twitter), and it also became a hot topic on a thread on 5ch’s Console Wars board. In the thread, some argued that gacha games mainly target big spenders with loose wallets, so a high price is accepted without complaint, while others countered that, unlike gacha — where all your paid-for assets drop to zero the moment the service shuts down — a one-time-purchase DLC stays with you for good. The discussion spread beyond a simple “which one’s pricier” into a more nuanced debate.

It's just pointing out that it's dumb for someone already doing something dumb on PlayStation (pulling gacha and flushing $500 down the drain) to nitpick a measly $35, right?

    6AnonymousOct 16, 2026 10:35
You often see people get bashed for a $70 offline game being 'too expensive!'
But if you complain that spending hundreds of thousands of yen a month on a mobile game to fully max out a character ('kanton,' getting every duplicate) is 'too expensive!', you get laughed at as a broke loser — even here in Japan.
    Makes no sense.

Stuff like this ultimately just comes down to gacha games being really good at sales tactics.
Getting people to pay up and feel satisfied even at a high price is what wins as a business.

    Re: #12
Once the service ends, everything you'd built up suddenly drops to zero — as both an IP and a system.
So with gacha and mobile games, it all comes down to 'how much monetization could they squeeze out' as the real metric.

    Re: #12
When your main customers are people with absurdly loose wallets, calling it 'good sales tactics' is a stretch.

I feel a little uneasy about it too, but when people call it 'selling content piecemeal,' that's not really what's happening — there's just too much volume to pin down with any of the usual '[x] business model' labels.

In consumer business you need that 'sense' of being justified in your purchase.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

At first glance, gacha games and one-time-purchase DLC both look like “paying for extra content,” but their structures differ. With gacha, if the operator shuts the servers down, the paid assets (characters, items) you’ve built up simply vanish, whereas a purchased DLC stays on your device for good. The thread’s point that “your assets suddenly hit zero once the service ends” gets at exactly this difference. Meanwhile, the view that “gacha games are just good at sales because their main customers have unusually loose wallets” and the critique that “releasing a Complete Edition from the start would feel more justified than rushing out DLC” both show that even with the same kind of add-on monetization, how worthwhile it feels to consumers depends heavily on the sales approach. The discussion branched out into personal spending habits and generational gripes, but no clear consensus emerged on which deal is actually better — if anything, it just highlighted how differently people see it.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from a thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Console Wars”) board: “Overseas: ‘You’ll drop $500 on a gacha game but complain about a $35 DLC that adds 100 hours of content?’“

  • Fuji TV Employee Quits Over ‘Power Harassment From a Subordinate’ — 5ch: ‘Look Up What Power Harassment Actually Means Before You Write This’

Yahoo! News reported that a veteran Fuji TV employee had quit after being relentlessly badmouthed by a subordinate in a group chat. The network, once the reigning ‘Triple Crown’ ratings champion, has reportedly been struggling with core viewer ratings in recent years. On 5ch’s Geisou Sokuho+ board (Entertainment & Sports News), the thread turned into a definitional debate over whether ‘power harassment from a subordinate toward a superior’ can even exist, with the conversation spreading to real cases of reverse power harassment and the network’s reputation for hiring through personal connections. Plenty of replies, meanwhile, took issue with the headline’s wording itself.

“A Boss Who’s Useless” — Fuji TV Veteran Employee Quit Over ‘Power Harassment From a Subordinate’… Relentlessly Badmouthed in a Group Chat

Fuji TV once ruled unchallenged as the king of television, holding the ‘Triple Crown’ of ratings all to itself.

But in recent years, the network has continued to struggle in the ‘core viewer ratings’ that every network now treats as the top priority, trailing behind Nippon TV, TV Asahi, and TBS — it’s no longer rare for it to sink to fourth place among the commercial key stations.

    Re: #73
Does the term 'power harassment' even exist in other countries?
You can tell right away that these '-hara' abbreviations are something only Japanese idiots came up with

Background and key points of this discussion

“Power harassment” was originally defined by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare as conduct by someone in a superior position — like a boss — abusing that advantage. In recent years, however, cases of collective harassment from subordinates who hold no authority over personnel decisions or supervision — so-called “reverse power harassment” — have also started being treated as labor issues. The thread was split over whether this reversed scenario can really count as harassment at all, and many posters took issue with the wording of the headline itself. The fact that the conversation drifted into Fuji TV’s history of connection-based hiring and past scandals is itself a sign of distrust toward the reporting. It’s also worth noting that by foregrounding the phrase “power harassment from a subordinate,” the headline turned the very definition of the term into the central point of debate.

  • Chunichi’s New Manager Kudoh Gives Reporters the Cold Shoulder at Debut Press Conference

A video of Kimiyasu Kudoh’s press conference after being named the new manager of the Chunichi Dragons has become a hot topic on 5ch. When a reporter asked, “Which players did you look up to as a kid?” he curtly replied, “I hated baseball,” and when asked, “What are you looking forward to about living in Nagoya?” he simply said, “Nothing.” Thread opinion split between those who saw this as a sign of his contempt for the media and those who thought the questions themselves were just low-effort. The thread also covered evaluations of his track record as SoftBank manager and anecdotes about his strict personality.

Actually, apparently the Dragons had basically already settled on Kuwata at first, and I heard the "Yama-Yama" coaching duo was lined up for him too — but when they reached out to Kudoh just in case, he said yes right away, so they switched to him
Kuwata had reportedly already started lining up coaches and preparing
And online, there's talk that some Dragons execs were saying things like "no way we're letting the enemy from 10.8 become our manager"… (referring to the legendary 1994 "10.8 Decisive Battle," when Kuwata's Giants beat the Dragons for the pennant)

    Background and Talking Points

During his tenure as SoftBank manager (2015–2021), Kimiyasu Kudoh’s teams won the regular-season pennant only twice, yet claimed the Japan Series title four times once the Climax Series is factored in. Two competing takes coexist: that he was a master of short-series, win-or-go-home management, and that the Climax Series format itself is simply too favorable to lower-ranked teams — and the thread’s split opinions stem from this difference in evaluation criteria. It’s also worth noting that the anecdotes about Kudoh’s personality at home come from things he and his son said on TV programs, not from verified official sources. As for his curt press conference answers, the questions themselves may well have been standard boilerplate meant to give a lighthearted glimpse of a player’s personality, and opinions in the thread were divided on whether this really amounts to “hatred of the media.”

Me too — HIROSUEEEE!! (that's her real name, apparently!!) (likely a joking mix-up with fellow actress Ryoko Hirosue, who shares the same first name)
    34AnonymousOct 16, 2026 08:51
I wonder if she ever broke up with her junkie boyfriend.
    37AnonymousOct 16, 2026 08:53
    She sure was hyper.
But I bet half of that's just exaggerated reactions for the cameras.
    40AnonymousOct 16, 2026 08:55
Manami Higa's face is already really small, but is Ryoko Yonekura's even smaller?

    Ex-boyfriend history:
    small-time gangster, drug addict

And her: got plastic surgery while laying low?

Is it really okay to put someone like this on TV?
    43AnonymousOct 16, 2026 08:56
I saw Yonekura in person back in her 20s — she was gorgeous.

Actresses in this crowd having weirdly manic energy isn't exactly rare, huh.

I bet TV Asahi is bowing their heads right about now, begging for a Doctor-X revival.
    53AnonymousOct 16, 2026 09:05
Won't hold a press conference, but sure doesn't mind showing up on TV.

That drama deserves way more credit than it gets.
    73AnonymousOct 16, 2026 09:43
How did she manage such a smooth comeback, anyway?
    She's even back doing commercials.
Even if she's totally clean, you'd think having a boyfriend that sketchy and getting that much press over it would tank her image.

    Re: #73
Makes you wonder if she's got some big shot backing her behind the scenes.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Around 2024, a foreign national Ryoko Yonekura was dating at the time was reportedly involved in a drug case. Although no charges were ever filed against Yonekura herself, she scaled back her entertainment activities for a while. The “gray zone” label used throughout the thread refers to this history — it’s easy to miss that there was never any report of drugs being detected from her personally. At the same time, some commenters point to a double standard compared to other celebrities who similarly stepped back over a partner’s troubles, raising questions about where exactly the entertainment industry draws the line between “guilty” and “gray.” As for her youthful appearance, whether or not she’s had cosmetic surgery remains pure speculation.

  • Tsubaki Factory’s Otsuki Nishimura Skips Blog Again — Even on Her Birthday, Second Time This Month Sparks Debate

On October 16, her 16th birthday, Hello! Project idol Otsuki Nishimura of Tsubaki Factory once again did not post a blog update — and it became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. It marked the second missed update this month, and since many of her fellow members were busy exchanging birthday wishes on Instagram and their blogs, fans began questioning why she hadn’t. Some defended her, citing the pressure and preparation involved in the group’s upcoming first-ever Budokan show, while others argued busyness was no excuse. The thread split between posters who see blog updates as essential to idol culture and those who feel X and Instagram are more than enough.

They've probably already concluded the first Budokan show won't sell out, so she must've realized there's no point putting in effort for Tsubaki anymore
    10AnonymousOct 16, 2026 08:00
She updates way less than the other members from her generation
Should we start bracing ourselves for what that means?

King's working hard enough as it is
You've all got jobs or school, plus the pressure and prep that comes with a first Budokan show — could you really manage to post a blog without fail every night or during your lunch break?
I sure couldn't. I'd rather she prepare properly and give us a great show.

    Matsukare's only interested in Ebata

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In Hello! Project, each member’s Ameba blog has long served as a primary point of contact with fans, which is why update frequency and whether a comments section is open draw so much scrutiny. The explanation floated in the thread — that she’s busy preparing for her group’s first Budokan show — is pure speculation; she herself has said nothing on the matter. At the same time, she did respond to birthday wishes posted on X that same day, so skipping the blog doesn’t mean she’s gone quiet on social media altogether. The real divide in the thread comes down to differing values: those who hold blog culture central to idol fandom versus those who think X and Instagram are plenty. A few posters also speculated her blog entries might be ghostwritten by staff, though no evidence backed that claim.
