  • Keisuke Honda: ‘Aiming for the World Cup Quarterfinals Is Too Low a Bar’ — Also Questions Coaching License System

Comments made by Keisuke Honda, who provided on-site commentary for the North/Central America World Cup during the September 1 broadcast of ‘news zero,’ became a hot topic on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board. Japan’s national team went undefeated through the group stage (1 win, 2 draws) but was eliminated in the Round of 32 after losing 1-2 to Brazil in the first knockout round. Responding to fans who suggested the next goal should be ‘reaching the quarterfinals,’ Honda dismissed the idea, saying, ‘That’s setting the bar too low.’ He also questioned calls for him to obtain a coaching license, asking, ‘Since when did being a coach become such a heavy burden?’ Thread reactions were split between critics who said he should get certified before speaking out, and defenders who argued his track record speaks for itself.

Keisuke Honda Responds to Calls to Lower the World Cup Goal from ‘Champions’ to ‘Quarterfinals’: ‘That’s Too Low a Bar’ — On Coaching Licenses: ‘Since When Did Being a Soccer Coach Become Such a Heavy Responsibility?’

Keisuke Honda appeared on news zero, which aired Tuesday, September 1. He provided commentary on Japan’s matches at this year’s North/Central America World Cup in soccer, watching on-site as the younger players competed in the tournament he himself once played in.

Japan advanced from the group stage with a historic first-ever unbeaten record (1 win, 2 draws), but lost 1-2 to Brazil in the first knockout round, exiting at the Round of 32. Having watched it all in person, Honda shared his candid impressions.

Guess I'll crack open a beer while watching Peace-kun, the world's most famous capybara from Omiya Zoo, on YouTube.
    4AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:04
No, but seriously, the goal should first be winning the first knockout-round match.
    5AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:05
Quit whining and just get the license if you want to be a coach, lol.
    7AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:07
If he's not a properly trained coach, he'll probably end up abusing players (power harassment).
    8AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:07
The license requirement isn't from Japan, it's from FIFA, right? Just get it already—Honda could pass it in no time.
    10AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:09
Japan has faced beatable opponents in the knockout stage plenty of times before and still couldn't win. I think it's a mental issue.
    11AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:10
Even if he had a license, no thanks to Honda as coach.

    13AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:11
I want the players and coaches themselves to keep saying 'our goal is to win it all,' no matter how much people mock them or nitpick. If they themselves started saying 'quarterfinals,' I'd be like, 'what do you think our tax money is funding this for?'

(・д・) Sailed through qualifying. Managed a draw thanks to the Dutch coach's blunders and Japan's effort. Tunisia—a team so falling apart they changed coaches mid-tournament. Sweden—played an even match against a team that barely scraped through the European playoff.
    15AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:13
If he's got time to whine like this, he should just go get the license first.
    17AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:15
Of course it's a heavy responsibility—a pro coach carries the fate of an entire professional club on his shoulders.

Don't try to jump straight into managing the senior national team with zero coaching experience. Work your way up properly. It sets a bad example for kids too—skipping all the steps just because you only want the glamorous job of national team coach.

    25AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:21
It's just entertainment, but they still require a license—how dumb is that, lol.
    26AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:21
Well, the players only get this one shot right now, so of course they'll go in with the mindset of aiming to win it all. But don't go broadcasting that to the media/public—it'll mislead people. Viewers just want to watch with realistic expectations in mind. Throw around a vague 'we're aiming to win' and it just makes the audience anxious watching. Set clear, grounded benchmarks so people can actually enjoy watching.
    29AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:23
Under the 'Zico system' (the loophole once used to install Zico as Japan coach without a license), he could do it anytime—it just means nobody's actually going to let you be coach. He couldn't even get results in Cambodia or wherever.
    30AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:24
A great player doesn't automatically become a great coach. Is Honda even cut out for coaching in the first place?
    31AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:24
A Honda-led Japan would probably pull good ratings, but it seems likely we'd end up with a team that can't reach the knockout stage again. Still, it'd be entertaining, so part of me wants to see him try.
    32AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:25
This is the same Honda that Takeshi Okada told, 'That's just wrong.'
    33AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:26
He'd probably just show up in a fancy suit trying to look cool while coaching.
    34AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:27
If you want to change the rule, I think you should get certified first and then make your proposal… What he's saying basically amounts to 'I don't have a license but I wanna be a coach!' He's not a toddler.
    35AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:27
Didn't he just run away after the disastrous showing at the Brazil World Cup, where the goal was also 'win it all'?
    36AnonymousSep 8, 2026 17:27
Japan's at the Round of 32, remember. Round of 16, then quarterfinals—even reaching the quarterfinals would be huge.

I used to think Makino seemed shady, but turns out he's surprisingly solid.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The coaching license system isn’t a JFA-specific rule so much as a framework of coaching qualifications set by the AFC and FIFA, positioned as the minimum requirement for taking charge of a national team or a J1 club (as mentioned in comment #8). Honda has a history of managing Cambodia’s national team without holding the required license, and has long publicly argued that ‘if you have a track record, you don’t need a license.’ In this news zero appearance, he pushed back on both the post-World Cup argument that ‘the goal should be lowered to the quarterfinals’ and the calls for him to obtain a coaching license. What split the thread was how to weigh the gap between how loudly someone speaks and what they’ve actually accomplished. Those calling for him to get certified argued that, since he’d be responsible for a pro club or a national team, a license serves as a baseline guarantee of competence. Those defending him argued that the opinion of someone with a proven track record is worth hearing regardless of whether he holds a license. One point readers might easily miss: the license requirement isn’t just a promotional formality—it’s a system grounded in international standards.

In the early hours of September 9, 2026, a thread titled “Talk to a sleepless, bottom-tier inkya” popped up on 5channel’s Newsspeed VIP board. The original poster vowed to reply to nearly every single post, and the conversation rambled on with no particular direction — coffee, udon noodles, what lies beyond the Milky Way, and stories of losing weight from being sick — continuing almost until dawn. Along the way, posters swapped stories like hallucinating in the hospital after a sleep-medication adjustment, and even debated what “inkya” actually means, turning a simple insomnia gripe session into a sprawling, freewheeling thread.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“All-reply” style VIP threads pop up frequently around the time the date changes, and their defining trait is that they aren’t necessarily tied to any specific newsworthy event — they’re simply self-contained chit-chat among whoever happens to be in the thread. This one was no exception, with folk wisdom of dubious scientific backing flying around, like “drinking coffee makes it even harder to sleep” or “a light snack causes a blood sugar spike that makes you drowsy” — none of which is guaranteed to actually work. As for the definition of “inkya,” the “active inkya / passive inkya” split proposed in post 169 is strictly one poster’s personal opinion, not an established definition shared across 5ch or the VIP board as a whole. The thread also touched on one poster’s experience adjusting sleep medication during a hospital stay, but specifics about medication and dosage vary enormously by individual and shouldn’t be generalized into medical advice.

  • Onsen Lifts Tattoo Ban, Reverses Course After Just One Month — 5ch: ‘Just Ban the Ones Who Actually Misbehave’

A hot spring facility that had lifted its tattoo ban — charging tattooed customers an extra 100 yen to bathe — reportedly reversed the policy just one month after starting it, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Newssoku VIP board. Trouble reportedly included damaged facilities and customers smoking without permission, and the thread split sharply between those who argued “just ban the individual customers who caused trouble” and those sympathetic to the facility, arguing “there’s no way 100 yen covers the cost of hiring someone to monitor them.” Opinions also diverged over whether the 100-yen surcharge was set at a reasonable level, and whether it’s fair to lump yakuza in with people who just have fashion tattoos.

The truly badly-behaved ones probably ignore both the fee and the sign-up sheet anyway.
A membership system is the only way to actually screen them out.

    Background and points of debate

Japan’s widespread “no tattoos” rule at public bathhouses is generally traced back to the 2000s, when anti-organized-crime ordinances spread and treating tattoos as a marker of gang affiliation became standard practice. In recent years, partly driven by a rise in foreign tourists, some facilities have started easing the rule — allowing cover-up stickers or restricting tattooed guests to private baths — and this hot spring appears to have been one of those testing a wider opening, in this case via a surcharge. The thread split between the view that facilities should simply eject individual troublemakers, and the view that, given limited staff, handling things case-by-case isn’t cost-effective — with the adequacy of the 100-yen surcharge itself also up for debate. It’s worth noting, though, that how many tattooed customers actually visited and what exactly happened remains secondhand information circulating within the thread; no official explanation from the facility has been presented.

  • Shohei Ohtani Goes 64 Plate Appearances Without a Homer — 5ch: ‘He’s Basically Turned Into Hideki Matsui’

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has gone cold at the plate — now 64 plate appearances without a home run — and the drought became a hot topic on the Nanademo Jikkyo board (5ch’s sports discussion forum). Posters noted his OPS has slipped to .902 and could soon dip below .900, drawing comparisons to Munetaka Murakami (OPS .812) and Kazuma Okamoto (OPS .746), who are having similarly rough stretches. Others pushed back by pointing to his contributions on the basepaths, like stolen bases, while the long-running debate over whether regular-season or postseason stats matter more resurfaced — eventually widening into comparisons with Hideki Matsui.

    Re: #53
He means that normally if you hit 30 bombs, your OPS should be way higher than that.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) reflects a batter’s overall offensive production, and a prolonged home-run drought tends to drag the whole number down through a falling slugging percentage. The two players brought up for comparison in the thread, Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto, have also seen their OPS stagnate relative to their home run totals, so this isn’t unique to Ohtani. The thread also repeatedly referenced the 2024 case in which Ohtani’s then-personal interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was fired by the team over his involvement in illegal gambling — but it was Mizuhara alone who faced criminal charges, and Ohtani himself was never charged with any crime. The point that split the thread was how much weight to give regular-season numbers versus past postseason performance — a recurring argument that comes up whenever a player’s form is being judged, not just in Ohtani’s case.

  • What Really Makes a Final Fantasy Game ‘Final Fantasy’? 5ch Can’t Agree

A thread titled “So what actually makes something feel like Final Fantasy?” went up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, sparking debate over what really ties the series together. Some pointed to realistic graphics and tall character proportions, Hironobu Sakaguchi’s scenarios paired with Nobuo Uematsu’s music, and the series’ tradition of overhauling its systems with every entry — while opinions split over how to place divisive titles like FF8, FF9, and FF13 within that identity. The discussion widened further with comparisons to the Tales series, mentions of Kingdom Hearts’ distinctive world-building, and eventually criticism of the franchise’s “host-club-style” character designs.

    138AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:58
    Re: #136
That's literally what they've always done

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Final Fantasy series has been running for nearly 40 years since the original debuted in 1987, and both Hironobu Sakaguchi (the series’ creator) and Nobuo Uematsu (its early composer) have since left Square Enix. The thread’s disagreement broke down into two main points: first, a divide between those who prioritize “realistic graphics and proportions” and those who prioritize “the challenge of overhauling the system with every entry,” and second, differing views on whether to treat divisive entries like FF8 and FF9 as part of the series’ mainstream identity. Worth noting, though not mentioned in the original thread, is that the claim that FF Tactics and FF12 share the same world isn’t mere speculation — it’s an officially confirmed setting known as the “Ivalice Alliance.” Also easy to misread: the comparisons to the Tales series are being used to gauge FF’s position within the broader JRPG genre, not to declare one series definitively better than the other.

Shukan Bunshun teased a scoop article titled “Samurai Japan Player’s Intimate Photos With Beer Vendor Girl,” set to go live on September 9, 2026 at 12:00 PM, sparking a wave of reactions on 5ch’s “Geinou/Sports Breaking News+” board. The player’s real name has not been revealed yet, and the thread was full of speculation tossing around names like Genda and Kiyota. Carrying that heavy beer keg up and down the stairs is rough work.
And you have to do it smiling the whole time, without ever looking like it hurts.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “Bunshun Cannon” often follows a pattern: the day before publication, it teases the target and content in vague terms on social media, then reveals the name when the full issue drops the next day. This time too, the player’s name remains withheld — the names Genda and Kiyota that circulated in the thread were nothing more than speculation, not confirmed information. Opinion split between those defending the pair with “it’s fine if both are single” and those offering conditional acceptance with “unless it involves infidelity or underage drinking, that’s a different story” — and reactions ran noticeably hotter or cooler depending on whether the player in question was married or single. Some replies also referenced an actual 2023 news report (with a link to a Yahoo News article) about former Lotte player Ikuhiro Kiyota being reported as dating a beer vendor girl — worth noting that this is a separate incident from the current teaser. The beer vendor girl seen in the photo is a private individual whose name has not been disclosed, and within the thread, “just leave them alone” was a notably common sentiment regarding whether the story should even be published.

  • Comedian Cunning Takeyama Warns Ungirls’ Tanaka: ‘Comedy Is Done the Moment It Touches Politics’

Comedian Cunning Takeyama has aired his personal theory that comedians who speak out on politics are “second- or third-rate,” adding that it’s “something done by people whose work has dried up” — remarks reported as a piece of advice aimed at Ungirls’ Takkyu Tanaka. On the 5channel Geisupo Sokuho+ (entertainment/sports news) board, the thread drew a wide range of reactions: some debated the topic by naming comedians who’d previously drawn attention for political remarks, others pointed out that Takeyama himself has made political comments in the past, and plenty of the discussion just drifted off into idle chat.

Cunning Takeyama (55) appeared on the TV Asahi program “Cream Nantara” (Mondays, 11:45 p.m.), aired on the 7th. He performed a bit from 20 years ago, revealing his commitment to the “kire-gei” (angry-outburst comedy style) he was known for back then.

The segment’s concept was “Time Slip 20 Years Back!? Encountering Nostalgic Shows & Scandal-Prone Idols.” Tetsuhei Arita announced, “A time machine has been developed.” Stepping into the time machine built by an assistant director, the cast found a “recreation” of TV Asahi’s headquarters from 20 years earlier. The bit recreated the recording sets of old shows like “Warai no Kin Medal” (Comedy Gold Medal) and “Ikinari! Ougon Densetsu” (Sudden Golden Legend), running quizzes tied to each recreated scene.

In the recreated scene from “Warai no Kin Medal,” Takeyama busted out his old-school kire-gei routine.

    Background and Talking Points

Whether comedians should speak out on politics is a topic that keeps resurfacing in Japan’s entertainment world, with figures like La Salle Ishii and Suidobashi Hakase — comedians who leaned harder into political commentary as their TV work dried up — often cited as examples. At the same time, some in the thread noted that Western comedians have a tradition of skewering politics for laughs, suggesting Takeyama’s remarks may reflect a broader gap between Japanese and Western views of what comedians are for. That said, the source article cited here is actually about a TV Asahi segment recreating a bit from 20 years ago, and the article text doesn’t confirm which program or context produced the thread-title remark warning Ungirls’ Tanaka. It’s also worth noting that the thread’s discussion drifted more toward pointing out boomerangs from Takeyama’s own past remarks and general chit-chat than toward the actual merits of the debate.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5channel (Geisupo Sokuho+) thread “Cunning Takeyama: ‘Comedy Is Done the Moment It Touches Politics’ — ‘Second- or Third-Raters Do That. People Whose Work Dried Up Do That.’ Warning to Ungirls’ Tanaka.”

  • Hiroyuki Questions the ‘Don’t Roll It Out Until It’s Perfect’ Argument on Self-Driving Cars — 5ch: ‘It Would Save More Lives’

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura raised a question on X (formerly Twitter) about the argument that “self-driving cars shouldn’t be introduced until they’re perfect.” He explained that autonomous vehicles could act like an unpaid chauffeur working 24 hours a day — helping elderly people get around in rural areas without public transportation, or getting people home from wherever they are. On 5ch, his comment sparked a flurry of responses raising concerns about who would be responsible in the event of an accident, worries that self-driving cars could cause traffic jams, and criticism that legislation hasn’t caught up — while others pushed back, arguing that “self-driving would actually save more lives,” leaving opinion divided.

Hiroyuki Questions People Who Insist “Don’t Introduce Self-Driving Until It’s Perfect”: “What’s the Logic There?”

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura (49) updated his official X (formerly Twitter) account by the 8th, laying out his views on the debate over self-driving cars.

Hiroyuki opened with: “Self-driving isn’t just at the level of ‘convenient because you don’t have to drive yourself.’ It’s like having a chauffeur working for free, 24 hours a day. You can drive to an izakaya and drive home. In rural areas without public transit, elderly people can go wherever they want, whenever they want, to see whoever they want. For domestic trips, you don’t even have to think about train transfers — you just tell it where you’re going and you arrive.”

I live in snow country, so I want them to build a feature where the computer safely drives forward through blizzards for me.

I think self-driving is actually harder in cities.
Since manufacturers have to comply with traffic laws, and it can't improvise like a human, you'll get gridlock everywhere.
I couldn't stand being driven around by something that never goes a hair over the speed limit, or stops dead every single time at a yellow light at a busy intersection.

    Re: #55
Just program it with the traffic laws and let it drive.
Elsewhere in the world, the speed limit is treated as an actual limit you don't exceed — Japan's the only place that encourages 'going with the flow' of traffic instead.

Self-driving cars could end up causing traffic jams.

The speed at which cars and other vehicles move is essentially the speed of the economy —
in PC terms, it's like the core's processing speed.

And Japan is working hard to slow that down (lol)

    144AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:34
    Re: #138
There's data on human-driven accidents, at least.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

In Japan, amendments to the Road Traffic Act made Level 3 (conditional automated driving) legally possible on expressways and similar roads in 2020, and Level 4 driverless operation under specific conditions possible in 2023. However, practical deployment remains limited to a small number of designated areas, such as Eiheiji Town in Fukui Prefecture, and has yet to see full rollout on ordinary public roads. The thread was most divided over two points: the legal question of who bears responsibility in the event of an accident, and whether there’s actual data backing up the claim that self-driving would save more lives. In the U.S., driverless taxis are operating in several states and releasing data, but large-scale statistics establishing a clear safety advantage over human drivers have not yet been firmly established. While Hiroyuki’s post emphasized the convenience self-driving offers for getting around, most of the replies focused on practical issues like traffic congestion and the state of legislation, resulting in something of a mismatch in the discussion.

On the night of September 8, 2026, Nintendo’s “Zelda Direct” and Sony’s “State of Play” aired in almost the same time slot. Zelda Direct was a tight 30-minute broadcast built around a single new title, while State of Play ran two hours and covered dozens of titles — yet Zelda-related terms dominated the top of X (formerly Twitter) trends almost completely. Reports even surfaced claiming State of Play “didn’t even crack the top 30 trends.” In 5ch livestream threads, users expressed shock that broadcast scale and buzz didn’t line up at all. You're saying that on purpose, right lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“State of Play” is a broadcast Sony holds on an irregular basis, and this installment ran two hours covering a large number of titles, while Zelda Direct was a focused 30-minute broadcast built around a single new title. Going by broadcast length and number of titles alone, State of Play should have had the edge — yet Zelda-related terms dominated the top of X’s trends, and the thread has been buzzing with surprise at this reversal. That said, it’s worth noting that trending lists shift based on a mix of factors — regional differences, the momentum of live commentary, bot activity, and more — so this alone isn’t a clean, apples-to-apples popularity comparison between the two. There’s also the view that the series broke through to casual audiences after “Breath of the Wild,” a claim that lines up with actual sales growth and isn’t purely fans talking up their favorite.

Differences emerged among posters over things like whether they had an official diagnosis document or how severe their symptoms were, making for a thread that mixed humor with an undercurrent of just how tough daily life can be.

Tomorrow, for sure, I'm going to my job at noon and picking up my paycheck…
    3AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:16
How many yen ago was this paycheck? Hasn't the statute of limitations run out already? Want me to hook you up with a good lawyer?
    5AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:17
    Re: #3
What's that supposed to mean? The average monthly pay here is about 130,000 yen. When I'm in a manic phase I make way more than that.

    Wait, so you're a woman?

Mental illness in women is basically no different from being healthy, right? I'm a guy with bipolar disorder, so obviously I don't have a partner.

    Re: #16
My parents tell every boyfriend I bring home, 'Dating this kid is gonna be rough, you know~' I'm also borderline developmental disorder (an undiagnosed "gray zone" case). But hey, even guys with mental illness can land a girlfriend — I guarantee it, since a few of my exes were exactly that.
    21AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:36
    Re: #16
    I'll be your boyfriend.
    18AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:34
    Re: #15
    And it's not even about landing a full-time job — I can't even get hired for a part-time one.
    24AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:38
    Re: #18
Oh really? Yeah, I've been rejected from a few part-time jobs myself. Even the job I have now felt like I only got in because the interview vibe happened to click.
    32AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:43
How does anyone even get rejected from a part-time job in this labor shortage era?
    34AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:44
    Re: #32
Every single part-time job near me turned me down.
    36AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:45
    Re: #32
It happens. Add it all up and I've been rejected about 10 times.
    38AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:46
    Re: #32
Funny enough, a friend said that to me back in college — 'Wow, people actually get rejected from Sushiro?' So I ended up working at Hama-zushi instead. (Sushiro and Hama-zushi are rival conveyor-belt sushi chains.)
    50AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:55
I work at a pharmacy and as a dental assistant.
    52AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:59
    Re: #50
If you can land a job as a dental assistant you must be gorgeous. Get outta here.
    54AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:00
    Re: #52
I'm not gorgeous. It feels more like they hired me because they're short-staffed — even now they're hiring literally everyone who shows up for an interview. I actually applied to a dentist's office known for hiring on looks, and got flat-out rejected.
    57AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:03
    Re: #54
But you've had several exes though. A real "busu" (plain/unattractive girl) is someone like me.

    Re: #54
Get lost. This thread's mine now.
    Re: #55
Applying to a convenience store at 27 is probably the problem. Unless it's a night shift, that's a job for high schoolers and college students.

    Re: #57
For what it's worth, I'm apparently a killer with inexperienced guys.

    Re: #59
So can you handle a guy like me too? I've got hair growing all over my body.
    65AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:05
    Re: #63
Can't right now since I've got a boyfriend, but if I were single I bet I could handle it.
    66AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:06
    Re: #63
For a guy, having hair all over your body is basically par for the course, right?
    62AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:04
    Re: #58
This is my thread. Trying to hijack other people's threads like that is probably exactly why you can't get back into society or land a girlfriend. Maybe cushion your heart a little and actually look at people.

I'm the one who can't get back into society or land a girlfriend. At least check the poster IDs properly.

I've been applying to supermarkets too, you know.
    76AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:09
I'm losing track of who's who at this point.
Which one's the 27-year-old with no work experience?
    79AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:10
    Re: #76
    That's me.
    Re: #72
Supermarkets are part-time jobs too. If anything, supermarkets are tougher given their operating hours.

    Re: #79
So it was you who tried to hijack the thread.
Though you do seem like you've got some baggage.

    Re: #79
Wait, you're also 27 and inexperienced? This is way too confusing.
    97AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:18
    I'm also bipolar, a 47-year-old part-timer.
I get a pension too, but it's not enough income.
I can't work any more than this — honestly, I'm done for.

Just holding it together like that is impressive.

    I don't have one.
It's unclear if I was even formally diagnosed — I never even got a diagnosis document.

    You're not even taking meds?

    I am taking them!

But if you don't even have a diagnosis document, don't go using a title like that….
Turns out we're not really in the same boat after all.

    Re: #106
I've even got a disability certificate, and here you are basically healthy….
    126AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:45
Actually, I grew up going to an all-girls school and used to do violin and ballet.
    128AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:47
    Re: #126
I grew up at a regular public school, self-described as bottom-tier. Did piano for 3 years, sax for 2, French horn for 10, and rhythmic gymnastics for 9 years. If anything, we were a poor family.
    129AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:47
    Re: #128
Nine years of rhythmic gymnastics is a big point in your favor.
    131AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:48

There's no way you were actually poor.

I only did it because I wanted to do the ribbon routine — kept it up from preschool all the way through 6th grade.

If all those lessons only cost 20,000 yen, that's incredibly cheap.

I wish you'd kept it up longer and stayed in a leotard the whole time.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness marked by alternating manic episodes, where mood swings upward, and depressive episodes, where it crashes down, and because the symptom swings can be so extreme, it’s said to make holding down steady work difficult. In the thread, discussion turned to how the support and pension benefits available can differ depending on whether someone holds a disability certificate or a formal diagnosis document, and it became clear that even among posters sharing the same mental illness, there was a wide range in symptom severity and how far along they were in getting back into working life. Several posters also described being rejected from part-time jobs over and over despite the constant talk of a “labor shortage,” suggesting employers may be cautious about hiring due to concerns over shift stability and the risk of absences. Bipolar disorder tends to get lumped in with the image of plain “depression,” but it’s worth noting that it also involves manic episodes, which sets it apart from — and makes it easy to confuse with — straightforward depression.
