  • Ibusuki Marathon Poster: Organizers Admit Using AI, Apologize — 5ch: “The Number of Umbrellas Is Off”

A poster for the “Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon,” scheduled for January 2027 in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, sparked speculation on X that it had been made with generative AI. The event’s organizing committee had previously stated on its official site that an illustrator created the artwork, but on September 8 it reversed course, admitting AI had been used in the production process, apologizing, and correcting the credit to “graphic designer.” On 5ch, users pointed out not only the unnatural shape of the rapeseed flowers but also a mismatch between the number of bathers and the number of umbrellas in the sand-bath scene, and opinions were split over whether using AI was even a problem in the first place.

    Sep 9 (Wed), 1:50 PM

A poster for a full marathon held in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, has drawn a string of claims on X that it was made using generative AI. The official website had described the artwork as the work of “an illustrator who has created numerous event posters and other pieces within Kagoshima Prefecture,” but on September 8 the event’s organizing committee revealed that generative AI had been used in the production process and corrected the site’s description, clarifying that the work was actually done by a “graphic designer.”

The poster in question is the promotional artwork for the “44th Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon,” scheduled for January 10, 2027. The design itself had been public since July 24, but on September 7 a post on X claiming it “shows the telltale signs of generative AI art” went viral. Users raised doubts about both the visuals and the official explanation, with comments like “the shape of the rapeseed flowers—the whole point of the image—is completely wrong” and “it’s obviously AI-made, so why credit an illustrator?”

LMAO, the composition alone is off

They could've just said it was AI-generated from the start—why lie about it?

Why does everyone attack you for using AI? Why

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The debate split into two issues: whether using AI itself was acceptable, and whether the organizers had lied about having used it. The committee had originally stated on its site that a real illustrator created the piece, so the main source of criticism was less the AI use itself than the fact that this credited background turned out to be false. On the thread, users pointed to specific AI-typical glitches—like the mismatched number of bathers and umbrellas in the sand-bath scene—while others pushed back against quality complaints by dismissing critics as “AI police,” leaving the discussion at a standstill. Disclosing the use of generative AI in promotional material has become increasingly common in the advertising and commercial industry in recent years, and this correction appears to follow that broader trend. That said, the details of how the work was commissioned and how the budget was allocated haven’t been made public, so the suspicions of profit-skimming raised on 5ch remain speculation for now.

  • “Shut Down Mercari” Backlash Draws Pushback — 5ch: “To Him, That’s His Salt”

After some otaku on X (formerly Twitter) argued that “Mercari should be shut down” and called it “a breeding ground for scalpers,” users on 5ch’s livestream discussion board pushed back one after another. Some pointed out that without resale marketplaces, out-of-print retro games and collectible goods would lose their only distribution channel, while others argued the real target of criticism should be companies that fail to crack down on scalping. The discussion also expanded into calls for mandatory ID verification and debate over whether the true root cause is the blind-box/lottery sales model itself.

    1AnonymousSep 9, 2026 15:53
If you're an otaku, you've definitely relied on Mercari — buying a used game, beating it, then flipping it right away.
A used game store won't even give you half of what Mercari does.
Also, Mercari's where clueless amateurs list out-of-print books and retro games without knowing their value, so you can snag them cheap. If it weren't easy to sell retro games on Mercari, a ton of them would've just been thrown away.

I don't know much about gadgets, but without Mercari, the only surviving units would be the lucky few that happen to get brought into Hard Off (a used electronics chain).
Buying/selling just the box or just the manual would disappear too.

Broken parts get valued at basically nothing if you bring them to a used shop, but you can score cheap hidden gems, so the more rural you are, the more screwed you are without flea market apps.
Plus the junk-item gacha hits sometimes too.
    23AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:03
    Re: #11
I'm from the countryside so I get it, but there are also guys scavenging Hard Off just to resell on Mercari, so I can't say it's all good.
Actually, retro game console prices apparently got driven up by resellers.
    24AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:04
    Re: #23
Sure, resellers driving up prices is an issue, but if items just get thrown away and surviving numbers drop, prices would go up anyway.
Even without resellers, the specialty otaku shops would jack up prices themselves.
    26AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:05
    Re: #23
I think it's just a matter of whether stuff flows to Yahoo Auctions or Mercari.
Even if neither existed, eBay would've just taken over anyway.

Yahoo Auction users have pretty questionable manners too,
but Mercari users are even worse.

If a site handles things dishonestly, of course it's going to get criticized.
But even if you kill Mercari, as long as Japan doesn't pass a law regulating resale — or individual buying and selling in general — another flea market site will just pop up.
It's exactly like saying 'even if you kill X, a new SNS site will just take its place.'
    74AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:32
    Re: #73
That sounds like it'd run into freedom of economic activity issues, so it'd be tough, right?
There's also the resale price maintenance system and antitrust law to consider.
    79AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:34
    Re: #74
Exactly, that's why completely preventing resale is hard.
The best countermeasure would be 'nobody buys that stuff,' but in the end people (fellow otaku, no less) end up buying it anyway — so aren't they the real enemy?

But look at trading cards or brand goods — they deliberately restrict supply to pump up market value.

Right, and take the Kura Sushi case — the operating company that approved the collab bears responsibility too.
It was undeniably the operator's side that agreed to a system where figures were mixed into the 'Bikkura Pon' capsule prize game and your odds went up based on how many plates you ate — yet only Kura Sushi kept getting slammed unreasonably hard.
Sure, the middleman cut is a problem too, but that's not the whole story.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Peer-to-peer marketplaces like Mercari operate on a system that doesn’t require sellers to hold a used-goods dealer license, leaving anti-resale measures and handling of stolen goods up to each company’s own voluntary rules. The criticism stems partly from frustration with this slow response, but the same system has also supported the circulation of products manufacturers no longer produce, like retro games and out-of-print merchandise — and the pushback in the thread points to exactly this double-sided nature. There’s also the view that soaring resale prices for limited-edition goods and cards are partly caused by the blind-box sales and made-to-order structures that deliberately restrict supply to keep market value high, meaning regulating flea-market apps alone wouldn’t solve the root problem — a point likely to keep resurfacing. Strengthening identity verification, such as linking accounts to My Number, is an area where discussion is already progressing in practice, and the thread’s proposal is an extension of that trend.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Otaku on X: ‘Shut down Mercari! Scalpers!’ — Aren’t these guys just newbies?“.

  • Tomomi Itano Changing-Room Filming Row: Hotel Adds “It Happened Outside Bathing Hours” Explanation

On September 3, a video posted by Tomomi Itano to her own YouTube channel raised questions about whether she had permission to film in the changing room of the large communal bath at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture. The hotel had initially been confirming the facts, but in an additional response it revealed that “the filming in question took place outside the large bath’s operating hours.” With operating hours set from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., the main points of contention on the thread became whether this time frame lines up with when Itano’s child would have been bathing, and the discrepancy with social media posts claiming to have “seen Itano filming.”

    2026/9/8

The “changing-room filming controversy” involving Tomomi Itano took a major turn after The Ritz-Carlton Nikko flatly denied ever giving filming permission. It all began with a single video she uploaded to her YouTube channel on September 3.

    Re: #162
So probably Itano and her daughter were already bathing, and the changing-room filming started right at 11 p.m.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Behind this controversy is the common rule at lodging facilities banning filming and social media posts in large communal baths and changing rooms. This hotel, too, had officially stated the same prohibition, and suspicion initially fell on Itano’s side for not checking the rules. The focus has now shifted to the credibility of the hotel’s later explanation that “the filming took place outside operating hours.” Since operating hours run from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., this would mean she bathed and filmed her child sometime between late night and early morning — some see the behavior as unnatural, while others argue a hotel backed by a publicly listed parent company would be unlikely to risk a false statement, leaving opinion divided. Meanwhile, the social media posts claiming to have “seen Itano filming” have not been verified by Itano herself, so the truth remains unclear.

  • Short sleeper Daisuke Hori’s 7-day livestream rules draw skepticism — 5ch: “So many restrictions, like he’s about to do something special”

Daisuke Hori, a self-proclaimed “short sleeper” who says he only sleeps 30 minutes a day, has announced a continuous 24-hour livestream running for 7 days starting September 10. However, the rules he published were lined with exceptions: the stream ends immediately if a clip surfaces, he won’t wear a sleep-detecting “smart ring,” and there will be several hours of stream downtime during “training sessions.” On 5ch’s “Nanimo Jikkyo G” board, opinions split over whether all these exceptions actually undermine the point of proving he doesn’t sleep, and the thread spiraled into alternative proposals covering everything from how he should bathe to how he should be monitored.

    1AnonymousSep 9, 2026 15:32
・The stream ends immediately if a clip surfaces
・I won't wear a smart ring — wearing one wouldn't reflect my normal daily life, since I don't normally wear one
・There are daily training sessions with clients, and since I can't reveal the methods behind the sleep-improvement program, there will be a few hours of stream downtime

lol, every single rule here is just cover for whenever he actually falls asleep.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Short sleepers — people who function on unusually little sleep — are medically confirmed in only a very small number of cases, and self-proclaimed short sleepers who turn the claim into a livestream stunt have repeatedly drawn criticism as “controversy marketing.” This time, the discussion centered on the fact that the rules Daisuke Hori published for his 7-day, 24-hour livestream included several exceptions that weaken any actual verification. On the thread, many pointed out that his reason for not wearing the heart-rate- and sleep-tracking “smart ring” — that he doesn’t normally wear one — doesn’t really prove anything. The rule ending the stream the moment a clip surfaces, along with stream downtime during “training sessions,” was also seen as a convenient way to pause the broadcast whenever needed. That said, extreme no-sleep endurance streams aren’t unprecedented — one past example ran over 230 hours (see post 38). Rather than focusing on whether Hori truly sleeps only 30 minutes a day, the thread’s real debate was over whether these rules could prove anything at all.

  • Self-Proclaimed “Expert”: “Bashing Criminals Is Where Life’s Failures End Up” — Reactions Split

A thread started on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board by an anonymous poster billing themselves as a self-styled “expert” has stirred up debate. The poster’s claim — that people whose only edge over anyone else is “having obeyed the law” end up bashing criminals and badly-behaved celebrities as a way of compensating for their own inferiority complex — struck a chord with some (“that hit me hard”), while others dismissed it as “just a delusional prose-poem thread” or “pure labeling.” The discussion gradually broadened into whether criminal-bashing can be justified as a form of maintaining public order or social punishment, and into a comparison of which is worse: bashing driven by righteous indignation, or bashing done purely for profit.

Isn't bashing criminals a good thing since it contributes to public order?

Why do you think it's allowed to plaster a criminal's face and personal info all over the news without their consent?
    That's what's called social punishment.
The public beats criminals down and tanks their social standing.
That's effectively baked into the punishment itself, and the justice system tolerates it.

In other words, the justice system believes "order is maintained by the public bashing criminals."

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The opening phrase “a certain expert” isn’t an actual professional’s view — it’s a stock phrase commonly seen on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board, used by anonymous posters to lend an air of authority to their own pet theories. This shouldn’t be mistaken for a factual claim. The thread split mainly along two lines of debate. The first concerns motive: is bashing criminals a legitimate act of social punishment effectively baked into the justice system, or is it merely an inferiority complex turned outward? The second is a comparative debate over which is worse — bashing driven by righteous indignation, or bashing done for profit (e.g., to farm clicks) — with some citing the harsher sentencing for occupational embezzlement to argue that profit-driven bashing is the more sinful of the two. The thread also drew distinctions between criticizing criminals versus etiquette violators, and between critiquing work versus attacking individuals personally, showing that this doesn’t reduce to a simple “is bashing good or bad” question.

  • Osaka Metro to Scrap Magnetic Tickets by FY2031 — 5ch: ‘Osaka’s always pulling some baffling stunt’

According to Yomiuri Shimbun Online, Osaka Metro has settled on a policy to abolish magnetic tickets by fiscal year 2031, switching to tickets printed with QR codes instead. The move is driven by the fact that magnetic tickets frequently jam ticket gates, requiring costly manpower and maintenance. Osaka Metro has already installed QR-code-reading gates at every station and plans to make them compatible with paper tickets as well. Reactions on the 5ch thread were mixed — some posters expressed understanding of the cost-cutting rationale, while others reminisced about the history of magnetic tickets, worried about QR codes being duplicated or misused, or raised concerns about an increase in paper waste.

Published 9/9 (Wed) 7:49 AM — Yomiuri Shimbun Online

Osaka Metro has settled on a policy to abolish magnetic tickets by fiscal year 2031. Because magnetic tickets tend to jam ticket gates and require costly manpower to manage the equipment, gates that accept magnetic tickets will be replaced with QR-code-compatible machines.

The abolition policy will be included as a “next-generation ticketing service” in a new mid-term management plan to be compiled soon. In place of magnetic tickets, the company is considering issuing tickets printed with QR codes at stations. Osaka Metro has already installed gates at every station that let passengers pass through by holding up a QR code displayed on a smartphone, and these gates will also support the new tickets.

Those huge ticket gates are packed full of magnetic reading equipment inside. A QR reader just needs a camera. Get rid of magnetic reading and the gates could get slimmer, letting them install more of them.

    Re: #8
They'd trained station staff to handle some maintenance themselves to cut costs, but that just shifted the burden onto the staff — so scrapping magnetic tickets entirely is the real fix.
    144AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:50
    Re: #8
Any machine breaks down at its moving parts first. The mechanism in current automatic ticket gates that feeds the ticket through takes a huge amount of effort and cost to maintain. Just having people hold up a QR code eliminates all that. Reader cameras are dirt cheap generic parts used in tons of stores and devices already.

Magnetic tickets have been around since the late 1970s (Showa 50s)… well, it's just the times changing. I live in Osaka — back then JNR staff were still clipping tickets by hand at the gates, but the private railways brought in automatic gates early on. Except the Katamachi Line.

So bring back the magnetic barcode ticket. Automatic gates that can even handle hard cardboard tickets — train otaku would be thrilled.

The current magnetic tickets date back to 1971 (Showa 46). Before that it was the barcode-style ticket from Re: #85, which only automated entry.

The hassle of recycling used magnetic tickets is also pushing things away from magnetic media — they really need to move on from it. If anything, a QR hard-card ticket seems more feasible; once it's QR, the thickness of the ticket stops mattering at all.

Background and key points of this discussion

Magnetic tickets have been in use since their introduction in 1971, with Kansai private railways adopting automatic ticket gates early on as a way to cut labor costs. This latest move isn’t about eliminating paper tickets altogether, but about resolving the maintenance burden caused by wear and breakdowns in the moving parts that feed tickets through the gate. Since QR-code reading only requires a generic camera, some in the thread pointed out that it’s far cheaper than updating an IC card system. JR East has already led the shift to QR tickets, making Osaka Metro a relative latecomer here. The thread also showed some misunderstanding, with comments like “what if your phone breaks?” — but as the article states, IC cards like Suica will continue to work exactly as before, and it’s easy to overlook that only the paper magnetic tickets are being changed. As for concerns about QR codes being duplicated, the system handles that by invalidating the code the moment you enter the gate.

  • Headwinds Hit the Pachinko Industry — 5ch: ‘Half the Shops Near Me Have Closed’

A thread titled “The Pachinko Industry Is Facing Its Real, No-Joke End…” went up on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” (なんでも実況G) board, sparking a wide-ranging debate about the industry’s future. Some posters explained that the prize-exchange system (the so-called “three-shop method”) is perfectly legal, while others reported that half the parlors in their neighborhood have shut down — and still others said none near them have closed at all, revealing a huge gap in people’s day-to-day experience. There were also comments pointing out that shrinking player numbers mean less tax revenue from the industry, plus plenty of grumbling that the increasingly complicated effects after a “right-strike” bonus have made it impossible to just zone out and play.

They're just impatient brats (lit. 'total pachinko kids')

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Cashing out prizes at pachinko parlors relies on a long-standing business custom called the “three-shop method,” which splits the parlor, the prize-exchange counter, and the wholesale buyer into separate companies so the whole setup doesn’t count as gambling. That’s the system posters in the thread are referring to when they say “the three-point method is legal.” The industry is widely described as facing an ongoing decline in the number of players, and some posts pointed to the resulting drop in tax revenue the industry generates. Meanwhile, opinions on how many local shops have closed were split — some said “half of them are gone,” others said “not a single one near me has closed” — showing just how much the experience varies by area. That’s likely because how quickly parlors get weeded out differs a lot depending on location. Complaints like “it’s become too complicated with the focus on right-strike play” and “you can’t just zone out and play anymore” also seem to trace back to spec changes driven by regulatory revisions to the machines, though the thread doesn’t get into the details of those regulations. Readers unfamiliar with how the prize-exchange system actually works, or with the history of these rule changes, may come away thinking the industry’s outlook is uniformly bleak — but in reality, the picture varies sharply from shop to shop.

    Background and points of debate

Hello! Project ran multiple groups simultaneously through the 2000s, building up a history where tabloid scoops and 2channel culture itself got passed down as “incidents.” The morningcoffee board has long covered Hello! Project as a whole rather than any single group, which gives fans of different generations common ground to bond over shared references. Where the thread split was over the standard for “who cares” itself — anecdotes that caused no real damage to anyone’s career were placed side by side with events that ended up having serious consequences, like Ai Murakami’s retirement or Eri Kamei’s firing controversy. It’s also worth noting for readers that many of the stories raised aren’t officially confirmed facts so much as rumors and personal recollections passed down among fans at the time, so some mix of unverified claims should be expected.

  • Rice Bought on Mercari Turns Discolored — Users Warn “Never Buy Food on Flea-Market Apps”

A post went up on 5channel’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” (Live/Sports Chat) board claiming that rice ordered through Mercari arrived discolored. Rice prices have kept climbing in recent years, pushing more people to hunt for cheaper deals on flea-market apps — but many sellers on these platforms are private individuals with no food-safety permits, meaning buyers have no way of knowing how the rice was stored or when it was milled. The thread filled up with comments like “buying food on Mercari is scary” and “just buy it at the supermarket,” while others drew a line, saying “canned goods or instant noodles are fine.” Opinions split over just how much food-buying on flea-market apps people are willing to tolerate.

    14AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:10
This is "don't leave a receipt rating, just report the seller" territory. (Mercari requires buyers to confirm receipt to release payment to the seller.)
    17AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:10
Why not just buy it at a supermarket or a proper rice shop?
    23AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:12
There are clueless people out there who think every e-commerce site works just like Amazon. You even get ultra-morons who buy Chinese products on Amazon and then go, "I thought it was taking forever — turns out it shipped straight from China! Can't trust this seller!😠"
    25AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:13
There's gotta be an Aeon or a drugstore within walking distance. (Aeon is a major Japanese supermarket chain.)
    26AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:13
Rice is finally dropping below 2,500 yen [per 5kg] — there's no upside to buying it on Mercari anymore.
    29AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:15
I've never seen rice this far gone.
    30AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:16
Guess as long as it gets attention, that's all that matters, huh?
    31AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:16
Sounds like she bought from some reseller who isn't even a real rice wholesaler.
    32AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:17
Mercari's for buying Chiikawa merch, not this. (Chiikawa: a wildly popular cute-character franchise.)
    34AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:18
The real problem is Mercari running ads that make it look like "a shopping site where you can buy anything."
    35AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:20
No way I could buy food on Mercari, that's too scary lol
    36AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:21
Buying food on Mercari is straight-up madness.
    38AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:21
It's like buying food off the black market, no way.
    45AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:24
Does rice even turn this color? How many years old was it?
    50AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:29
Seller, probably: "Well, the listing did say no complaints, no returns…"
    83AnonymousSep 9, 2026 15:02
A kid who won the "birth-country gacha" but totally bombed the "parent gacha."
Guess it's time to keep re-rolling? ("Gacha" = random-draw loot mechanic, used as slang for the luck of being born into your circumstances.)
    103AnonymousSep 9, 2026 15:14
    Re: #83
Honestly, that's close to a bad pull on the country gacha too.

    Background and Points of Debate

Flea-market apps like Mercari run on person-to-person (C2C) transactions, which is a key difference from online retailers or physical stores: sellers aren’t required to hold a food sanitation permit or verify their identity. Rising rice prices in recent years have pushed more people to hunt for deals on flea-market apps, but the risk of buying rice with an unknown milling date or storage history has long been flagged as a concern. The thread split between those who see buying food through person-to-person deals as inherently risky, and those who argued that sealed, brand-name items like canned goods or dry foods are fine — showing that where people draw the line varies from person to person. The phrase “no complaints, no returns,” commonly used in listings, tends to be cited by sellers as grounds for refusing return requests, but it doesn’t actually guarantee the food is safe. What’s easy to overlook when buying food on a flea-market app is that there’s no quality assurance from the platform itself — it’s strictly a deal between individuals.

  • Juice=Juice to Launch Regular Show ‘Juicy Talk’ on Nippon Broadcasting System This October

It’s been announced that idol group Juice=Juice will launch a regular program, ‘Juice=Juice Juicy Talk,’ on Nippon Broadcasting System (Nippon Hoso) starting October 4, 2026, airing every Sunday from 9:00 to 9:30 PM. All members will serve as on-air personalities, and a listener email address has also been made public. Reactions poured in immediately on 5ch’s Hello! Project board — some worried the slot would get bumped by Sunday night baseball broadcasts, while jokes mixing up ‘Radio Nippon’ and ‘Nippon Broadcasting System’ (two separate, similarly-named stations) flew back and forth. At the same time, many posts celebrated the group finally landing a long-awaited regular radio slot, and others fondly recalled the group’s earlier flagship show ‘We are Juice=Juice.’

Yeah, but who'd have guessed the group radio comeback would happen like this
    27AnonymousSep 9, 2026 15:14

There's no such thing as Nippon Broadcasting System
All that exists is Radio Nippon

    Can't remember which one now

Same timeslot as the Burando show, huh
Figured Arisawa would step in once Akiyama graduates, but doesn't look like it

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The news here: Juice=Juice will hold a regular program on Nippon Broadcasting System in the Sunday 9 PM slot starting October 4, 2026. Individual members of Hello! Project groups have previously hosted shows on regional and sub-key stations like Radio Nippon, bayfm, nack5, and Gifu Chan, but according to the latest rundown of regular slots shared in the thread, landing a show ‘as a group’ on Nippon Broadcasting System — a Tokyo key station — is seen as a cut above what other Hello! Project acts have managed. Discussion in the thread split mainly into two points: (1) concern that, despite the prime Sunday 9 PM slot, the show could get bumped by baseball broadcasts, and (2) a running gag repeatedly mixing up ‘Radio Nippon’ and ‘Nippon Broadcasting System.’ The two are actually separate companies, with the latter being one of the key radio stations based in Tokyo. There were also many references to the group’s earlier flagship show ‘We are Juice=Juice,’ with fans admitting they still can’t bring themselves to remove it from their Radiko favorites — suggesting that the revival of a group radio show had long been a wish among fans.
