  • Nintendo Direct sparks “worst one ever?” claims, 5ch split on verdict

Nintendo streamed a Nintendo Direct on the night of the 9th. The broadcast covered an open-world-style expansion for the new Kirby title, a trilogy of Zelda remakes, the revival of Yo-kai Watch, and new info on Layton, but with few major surprises, some on 5ch called it “possibly the worst Direct ever.” Others pushed back, pointing to the Switch 2 port of Monster Hunter Wilds and the high concurrent viewer count as proof the content itself wasn’t bad — opinions in the thread were split.

    This is done for, seriously

As a PC-building guy who's only interested in photorealistic stuff like the upcoming RTX 6090, DLSS5, Witcher 4, GTA6, and TES6, this Direct was too painful to sit through — I closed it right away.
What kind of audience is even watching this lol, 1.5 million people.
A Nintendo Direct is just too much for someone on as high a level as me.

    Nintendo Direct

Background and key points of this discussion

Nintendo Direct is a program Nintendo streams periodically to announce new titles and information, and this installment aired late on the night of September 9, 2026 (Japan time). The thread’s main point of contention was “whether there was any real surprise”: some argued that the Switch 2 port of Monster Hunter Wilds had already been announced beforehand and so lacked shock value, while others countered that the sheer number of announcements — including new Kirby content and further details on the Zelda remake — was still substantial. There was also a claim that Japan’s concurrent viewer count was roughly double the US broadcast’s, though it was noted this was likely influenced by broadcast timing — early morning in the US and early afternoon in Europe, versus nighttime in Japan — making it hasty to read this purely as a popularity gap. Note that figures cited in the thread, such as Kirby’s sales numbers, are individual posters’ claims and have not been confirmed against official figures.

  • Full Remake of ‘Romancing SaGa 3’ Announced — 5ch Reacts: ‘Thomas Has Glasses Now’

A full remake of Romancing SaGa 3 has been announced, and reactions on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board quickly centered on comparisons with the previous title, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. Believed to be made by the same team, the thread buzzed with both anticipation and worry over the character redesigns, upgraded graphics, and how well the story gaps might get filled in this time. Posters also raised concerns about how the series’ signature fan-service elements will be handled, and whether an Xbox version will actually ship alongside the rest this time.

On the flip side, Romancing SaGa 3 runs the risk of tanking in reception if the story supplementation doesn't satisfy fans
The previous game was basically just the remaster turned 3D, so there's some anxiety about that

    Re: #119
Remake 2 filled in a ton of the Seven Heroes' backstory, so it should be fine
Because they fleshed that out, the link between the emperor's succession and the protagonist's fight against the Seven Heroes was emphasized really well
In the pre-remake version of 2, that was barely touched on until near the end

    Background and Talking Points

Romancing SaGa 3 originally launched on the Super Famicom in 1995, and a 2D remaster for smartphones, PC, and Switch was already released in 2019. What’s been announced this time is a full graphical overhaul — a “full remake” — believed to be a follow-up project to the previous title, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. In the thread, opinions on that earlier game’s difficulty were split between “it’s easy once you chain combos” and “it’s brutally hard on a first playthrough,” a divide that’s typical for this series, where the experience shifts drastically with player skill. Reactions to the character redesigns were similarly split, with some fans confused, saying “that’s not how I pictured them,” and others defending the changes as “faithful to the source material” — a familiar pattern of praise and criticism that tends to follow any remake. It should be noted that official details on how faithfully past elements will be reproduced, or the specific content included, have not been announced, so comments in the thread remain speculation based on prior entries.

  • Japan Tops Every Category in OECD Learning Assessment—But Reading Comprehension Sees a ‘Significant Decline’

The OECD has released the results of its 2025 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), and Japan ranked first among the 38 OECD member countries in all three categories: reading comprehension, mathematical literacy, and scientific literacy. This is the first time Japan has topped every category at once since the survey began in 2000. However, compared with the previous 2022 survey, average scores in math and science fell slightly but were statistically flat, while reading comprehension dropped to 503 points, which was judged a “significant decline.” On 5ch, commenters questioned why Japan’s economy remains stagnant despite topping the world academically, pointed out the gap between exam-prep skills and real-world application, and the discussion spread into debates over fiscal policy and the effects of the falling birthrate and aging population.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) announced on the 8th the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), conducted in 2025 (Reiwa 7). Japan ranked first among the 38 OECD member countries in average scores across all three categories: reading comprehension, mathematical literacy, and scientific literacy. This is the first time Japan has placed first in every category since the survey began in 2000. The survey covered 91 countries and regions, including non-OECD members, and among all participants Japan placed 4th, 5th, and 5th respectively in the three categories.

The survey is conducted roughly every three years (every four years starting in 2025) and measures the academic ability of 15-year-old students who have completed compulsory education. This round was administered by computer from June to August 2025, with 760,000 students from 91 countries and regions worldwide taking part. In Japan, 6,500 first-year high school students sat the test, selected according to OECD guidelines to represent a cross-section of society.

Comparing average scores across the three categories with the previous 2022 survey, mathematical literacy fell 11 points to 525, and scientific literacy fell 9 points to 538. Scores dropped, but the changes were considered statistically flat. Reading comprehension, however, fell 13 points to 503, which was judged not to be due to chance but a “significant decline.”

Background and Key Points of This Topic

PISA is an OECD-administered international comparative survey targeting 15-year-olds who have completed compulsory education; this round included 760,000 participants from 91 countries and regions, with 6,500 first-year Japanese high schoolers taking part. The “first place in every category” claim refers to Japan’s ranking among the 38 OECD member countries—the original article notes, though it’s easy to overlook, that among all 91 countries and regions (including non-members), Japan placed only 4th in reading and 5th in both math and science. Nor does this result simply mean academic ability improved: average scores in math and science fell from the previous survey but were judged statistically flat, while reading comprehension dropped 13 points and was treated as a “significant decline.” In the thread, opinions split over how to explain the gap between high academic achievement and economic stagnation, highlighting differing views on contributing factors such as the falling birthrate and aging population, fiscal policy, and the mismatch between the exam system and real-world application.

  • Masahiro Matsuoka: “The Sutra Was on Tape” — Funeral Story Blows Up on 5ch (“Wait, was that lip-synced?”)

Masahiro Matsuoka, formerly of TOKIO, shared a funeral story on his YouTube channel that’s gotten people talking. He said that even though a senior, highly respected monk had come to perform the reading, “the sutra was on tape” — he guessed it might have been due to the monk’s poor health, but it apparently caught the staff off guard. On 5ch, the story sparked all kinds of reactions: complaints about how expensive funeral donations (o-fuse) are, trivia about what sutras are actually supposed to mean, and pragmatic takes saying a tape is fine either way. Plenty of jabs also tied it back to Matsuoka’s own history of “miming” instrument performances in TOKIO, making for a livelier discussion than just a simple surprising anecdote.

Masahiro Matsuoka recounts a shocking funeral moment — a senior monk attended, yet… “The sutra was on tape”

Masahiro Matsuoka (49), formerly of TOKIO, updated his YouTube channel on the 9th, where he shared a startling funeral experience.

When the topic turned to funerals, Matsuoka said, “There was a monk whose sutra was on tape — probably because his health wasn’t great, though I don’t really know the details,” surprising the staff.

Went to a relative's funeral and there were 3 monks chanting in unison — it was wild.
With three of them, they'd each take little breathers here and there, but then all three happened to pause at the exact same moment and it went dead silent… I lost it.

But you got an inheritance out of it, right? lol

    Background and talking points

The custom of monks receiving a fee (o-fuse) for chanting sutras at funerals remains deeply entrenched, but the going rate — and even whether a fee is charged at all — varies widely by temple and region, with no official standard. Anecdotes in the thread cite figures of “200,000 to 500,000 yen (roughly $1,300–$3,300) per session,” and it’s that very lack of transparency around cost that makes the topic so easy to pile onto. Commenters also cited an explanation (originating from NHK’s “Chiko-chan Will Scold You!”) noting that sutras aren’t actually meant to mourn the dead but rather to convey the Buddha’s teachings — suggesting many people misunderstand their true meaning. The use of taped sutra recordings is reportedly a real practice in some cases, driven by aging monks’ declining health and a shortage of clergy — meaning this may reflect a genuine shortage of people to perform funeral rites rather than just being a punchline, a point the thread itself never raised. It’s also worth noting that many of the jabs in the thread specifically drew a parallel to Matsuoka’s own history of miming instrument performances during his TOKIO days — a callback unique to this particular story.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Masahiro Matsuoka recounts a shocking funeral moment — a senior monk attended, yet… “The sutra was on tape” / “So it’s lip-syncing, huh?”.”

  • Six Months After Maria Makino’s Graduation, Only Two Active Members Still ‘Like’ Her Posts — 5ch: ‘Aren’t They Just Angels?’

It’s been six months since Maria Makino graduated from Morning Musume. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a thread caught fire over the observation that only two active members — Juice=Juice’s Runo Yofu and Tsubaki Factory’s Mifuu Kawashima — still ‘like’ Maria’s Instagram posts. There are also reports that Maria herself no longer likes everyone’s posts the way she did as an active idol, now reserving her likes for a handful of select OGs (graduated members), such as Yuko Nakazawa, Maki Goto, and Riho Sayashi. Opinions in the thread were split: some praised the two members’ loyalty as ‘too angelic,’ while others read Maria’s distance from the active roster as a sign of friction with her agency.

    1AnonymousSep 9, 2026 22:49
I dunno, but honestly, aren't these two just too angelic?
Maria used to talk about Yofu a lot on her radio show, calling her 'Yofu-chan' right up until the very end.

    Background and Talking Points

Within Hello! Project, multiple groups — Morning Musume, Juice=Juice, Tsubaki Factory, and others — belong to the same talent agency, so it’s not unusual to see OGs (graduates) and active members interacting on Instagram. That said, it’s hard to judge the state of a relationship from likes alone: there are reported customs of active members holding back from liking graduates’ posts, as well as cases of graduates curating their likes as a reaction to how they behaved while still active. In this thread too, opinions were split between reading the fact that only Runo Yofu and Mifuu Kawashima keep liking Maria’s posts as ‘proof of a trusting relationship,’ and dismissing it as ‘they’re just tapping like at random.’ No conclusion was reached. As for the circumstances behind Maria’s graduation, nothing in the thread offers solid grounds for concluding it reflects friction with her agency.

  • Rice farmer closures and bankruptcies hit record pace — 5ch: ‘This industry is only 0.1% under-50s’

A survey by Teikoku Databank has found that closures and bankruptcies among rice farming operations are running at a record pace. Just from January to August 2026, there were already 32 cases, with some citing an aging workforce and recent declines in rice prices as reasons the business “no longer adds up.” However, the count mainly covers agricultural corporations tracked by the firm, and doesn’t include individual farmers who quietly leave the industry. On 5ch, users debated whether the figure seemed too low given Japan’s roughly 1.7 million rice-farming households, pointed out that the tally may be limited to corporations, and discussed the land-consolidation issues holding back large-scale farming.

    59AnonymousSep 9, 2026 21:10
32 cases — if that covers something like 6,400 hectares of farmland, that'd be a big deal.
    84AnonymousSep 9, 2026 21:17
    Re: #59
Even if it really were 6,400 hectares total, that's under 4,000 tons of output — basically a rounding error against Japan's 7-million-ton total production. And these are probably small operations anyway, so it might not even add up to 64 hectares.
    68AnonymousSep 9, 2026 21:12

Then again, a lot of it is heavily reworked terraced paddies or some old guy's quarter-acre plot — plenty of places where there's no way to consolidate.

When farms consolidate it's just the way of the world that the worse plots get abandoned.
If rice stays cheap, no new farmers will move onto that vacated land, and growing vegetables takes manpower, so you'll need everyone's favorite Nguyễn to lend a hand (a common nickname for Vietnamese migrant farm workers).

Probably the big farms absorbing the small ones.
TDB mainly tracks corporations and companies.
Some of them paid off debts during last year's price spike and dissolved the company.
Maybe [farm minister] Shinjiro's massive stockpile release was the final push.
Feels like corporate farm dissolutions are going to keep climbing over the next couple of years.

If it ever got that bad, they'd only sell to the rich anyway —
just look at last year's rice panic to see how that goes.

Background and key points of this discussion

The bankruptcy/closure statistics Teikoku Databank compiles for “agricultural corporations” only cover businesses organized as corporations, and in principle exclude closures among Japan’s roughly 1.7 million individually-run rice farming households. Many in the thread found the figure of 32 cases suspiciously low, but this is largely explained by that difference in scope. Rice prices stayed largely flat for a long stretch before the recent sharp rise, and a structure that makes it hard to pass rising costs on to consumers has squeezed rice farmers’ income. Large-scale consolidation of farmland is also held back by the large amount of land left in unfavorable conditions, such as terraced paddies and scattered, non-contiguous plots — as posters pointed out, this isn’t something simple mergers can fix. How to sustain Japan’s rice production base is directly tied to the long-term challenge posed by a structure centered on family farming and an aging pool of successors.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “[Rice] Rice farmer closures/bankruptcies at record pace — 32 cases in the first 8 months of this year, with some citing “the business doesn’t add up” amid aging and falling rice prices.”

  • Even the Finale Feels Undercooked — 5ch: “Too Few Episodes Diluted It Like Watered-Down Calpis” (Calpis is a Japanese drink concentrate meant to be diluted — slang here for something weakened)

Episode 13 of the original anime “Goodbye Lara” aired, and on 5ch’s live-watch and reaction threads, viewers voiced frustration over how few episodes remain, alongside debate over the show’s overall direction. Quoted from an interview in which the director said he “didn’t want to fit into a clichéd genre,” many argued that this ambition ended up feeling undercooked given the short runtime. Meanwhile, some pointed out that the episode viewers rated most highly was Episode 7 — which stepped away from the main yuri storyline — highlighting a gap between the creators’ intentions and audience expectations. AI-generated images were also posted in the thread, sparking further back-and-forth over how to handle them.

To begin with, visual media is supposed to avoid explaining things through dialogue or narration

    Yeah, fair point, honestly.
Anything the visuals can already convey doesn't need spelling out.
Though if you push that too far it just gets incomprehensible.

"Didn't want to make a clichéd yuri story."
"Didn't want it to have no genre at all."
"Didn't want people watching it through a genre-shaped lens."

This is from the director's interviews and Twitter Spaces talks —
"I don't want it to be genre-less, but I don't want it boxed into a genre either."
That seems to be roughly where the director's head is at.

But even granting all that, it still comes off like they diluted it into watered-down Calpis with too few episodes

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Goodbye Lara” is an original anime with a limited episode count — per post #45, only two episodes remain, with a spin-off novel also announced for October. In an interview, the director stated an intent to avoid “fitting into a clichéd genre” (post #94), and the thread split between viewers criticizing this approach for leaving the show feeling undercooked within such a short runtime, and those praising the attempt itself. Notably, the observation that the episode viewers rated most highly was Episode 7 — which leaned into romance outside the main storyline (post #101) — is cited as evidence of a gap between the creators’ intentions and audience expectations. The thread also saw AI-generated images posted routinely, sparking debate over their use, though this is a separate issue tied to fan-made content in general rather than to “Goodbye Lara” itself.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Anime) thread “Goodbye Lara #13.”

  • Mom Slams Son’s “Otaku Life” — 5ch Reacts: “But He Pays Rent!”

A post on the anonymous VIP board recounted how the poster’s mother had asked, “How much longer are you going to keep collecting that stuff?” about his hobby of collecting merchandise. The poster shot back that since he pays living expenses into the household every month, she has no right to comment. The thread split between those defending him — arguing that as long as you’re paying your way, even while living with your parents, no one has room to complain — and those expressing discomfort at an adult still this obsessed with merch. The discussion also veered into comparisons with women who are obsessed with K-pop or idols, sparking a debate over the difference between devotion to real people versus 2D or virtual characters.

    Background and Points of Debate

A recurring question in threads like this is where to draw the line on “if you’re paying living expenses, is your hobby off-limits to criticism?” Here too, opinion split between those arguing that paying money into the household means no one has the right to complain, and those arguing that as long as you’re living under your parents’ roof you should be mindful of your family’s feelings — the disagreement really comes down to whether financial contribution and emotional independence can be treated as the same thing. The thread also debated why otaku hobbies draw so much distaste, with some comparing it to women’s devotion to K-pop or idols, but that was met with pushback emphasizing the difference between devotion to a real person versus a 2D character, and no consensus was reached. Note that the thread never reveals the poster’s age or income, nor any specifics about the mother’s side of the story — this remains strictly one side of the story as told on an anonymous message board.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsspeed VIP) thread “[Image] Awful mom: “How much longer are you going to keep collecting that stuff?”.”

  • Planning to buy a sports car as soon as next year — 5ch: “I was thinking around ¥5.5 million”

A poster believed to be living in Hokkaido started a thread on 5ch saying they want to buy a sports car as early as March next year. Since they didn’t reveal a specific model at first, some commenters warned that staying quiet would “just invite bump trolls” (posters who flood a thread with junk just to keep it alive). Eventually the poster revealed that a Lexus RC F was their top pick, with a budget of around ¥5.5 million, and said they were hunting for a used 2016-or-earlier model with under 40,000 km on the odometer. Some asked about the reputation of the Toyota GR86, and one commenter passed along secondhand feedback from a relative who owns one: “Since it’s a manual, driving around town is rough.” The thread also touched on driving in snowy regions and choosing the right car for the job.

    I've got a relative with a GR86 who says it's pretty good.
Though they bought the manual version, so apparently driving around town is hell

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Lexus RC F is one of the few remaining Japanese sports coupes still powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8, and as tightening emissions regulations shrink the pool of new cars offering large-displacement NA engines, the model has held onto solid popularity on the used market. In the thread, some commenters noted that the original poster’s initial silence about which model they wanted would “just invite bump trolls,” but once the RC F was revealed, opinions split over the relative merits of the RC F versus the GR86. One remark that “a turbo kei car would beat it off the line” is easy to misread: it’s not about the RC F being slow overall, but about the difference in initial acceleration caused by the weight gap between the cars — a distinction that’s easy to conflate. Note that numerous posts consisting of meaningless repeated words from a single ID were excluded from this article. Since the poster lives in Hokkaido, the thread also touched on winter driving and the need for all-wheel drive, giving the exchange a distinctly regional flavor.

  • Who’s Japan’s Strongest Warlord? 5ch: ‘A Loser Who Couldn’t Even Unify the Country Can’t Be That Strong’

Over on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board, a thread kicked off with the question “Who’s Japan’s strongest warlord — Kusunoki Masashige or Maeda Keiji?” and quickly exploded into a full-blown debate ranking historical warlords by strength. The discussion spread fast, with some backing Tokugawa Ieyasu for unifying the country and building a regime that lasted over 260 years, while others championed figures famous for personal battle prowess, like Minamoto no Tametomo, Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, and Tsukahara Bokuden. The sticking point was how to measure “strength” in the first place — those who judged by achievements and leadership never quite saw eye to eye with those who judged by individual combat ability, and the argument never really got resolved.

    Are these guys SS-rank?
    3AnonymousSep 9, 2026 21:06
Going by actual accomplishments, it's Tokugawa Ieyasu — the man who unified the country and whose line lasted 400 years after
There's no way some loser who couldn't even unify Japan counts as "strong"

Minamoto no Tametomo (old script: 源爲朝) was a warrior of the late Heian period. The eighth son of Minamoto no Tameyoshi. His mother was a courtesan from Eguchi in Settsu Province (present-day Eguchi, Higashiyodogawa Ward, Osaka). He was the uncle of the brothers Minamoto no Yoritomo and Yoshitsune.

Being the uncle of Yoritomo and Yoshitsune, I guess he does sound pretty strong

Wasn't Hideyoshi way out in front on number of battles fought?
    8AnonymousSep 9, 2026 21:08
Maeda Keiji didn't really do anything all that impressive, did he
He's basically the front-line equivalent of Shigeru Mizuki (the manga artist famous for his own semi-legendary war stories)
    14AnonymousSep 9, 2026 21:10
Maeda Keiji, just like Shingen, Kenshin, and Masamune, was just making noise out in the boonies — he's beneath even the Miyoshi clan

Yorimitsu actually has basically no real track record as a warrior

Overall I'd say it's Maeda Toshiie — he appears in the manga Hana no Keiji (the story centered on his nephew Keiji)
He also handled command of large armies without a hitch under the Toyotomi regime

I'll go ahead and say much obliged to that

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In threads like this, the argument is baked in from the start because there’s no agreed definition of a “strong warlord.” Figures like Kusunoki Masashige and Maeda Keiji, who are discussed in terms of personal valor and anecdotes, are being measured on a completely different scale from someone like Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose case rests on unifying the country and building a regime that lasted over 260 years. Part of why Kamiizumi Nobutsuna and Tsukahara Bokuden get hyped up in these threads owes a lot to Koei’s historical simulation games, which have long given them absurdly high stats — that’s more a product of later pop-culture image-building than the historical record. The same goes for Maeda Keiji: his portrayal in fiction like the manga Hana no Keiji looms large, and it’s fair to point out that his actual documented military achievements are fairly limited. Meanwhile, figures like Minamoto no Tametomo and Minamoto no Yorimitsu (famed for slaying the demon Shuten-doji) straddle the line between history and legend. Ultimately, this is the kind of argument that can’t be settled until everyone agrees on what “strength” even means — individual combat prowess or a commander’s leadership.
