  • Hideo Kojima’s ‘PHYSINT’: Sony Bails, Xbox Steps In — 5ch Reacts: ‘Wait, What?!’

Hideo Kojima revealed on X that in mid-June this year, Sony (SIE) notified him it was “canceling the project” for PHYSINT, which was then in development. After spending three months searching for a new partner, he announced that development would continue with Xbox on board. Sony, for its part, issued a statement saying it had “made the decision to step back from the PHYSINT collaboration.” On the thread, opinions split over how well Death Stranding 2 actually sold, given its predecessor’s sales figures and production budget, with posters also linking the split to Sony’s recent shift away from its heavy focus on big-budget blockbuster titles.

    Hideo Kojima
    @Kojima_Hideo
As just announced in an official release from Kojima Productions, in mid-June this year we suddenly received notice from SIE that they were "canceling the PHYSINT project," which was then in development. PHYSINT is an important project both to me and to Kojima Productions, so over these past three months I've been searching relentlessly for a "new partner" to make sure it could continue no matter what. After consulting with people across many different fields and pushing negotiations forward, we've decided to team up again with XBOX as a partner who shares our "vision for the future." PHYSINT, our next-generation "espionage action" title, is still in development, so please don't worry.

Can't be helped, Death Stranding 2 flopped.
Even the first one only padded its numbers by going free on Epic.

It sold 2 million copies — is that really a flop? You're just getting suckered by some stale clickbait gaming blog.

    Re: #63
For a game that size, 2 million is a straight-up flop. Former PlayStation exec Yoshida even told overseas media, 'With labor costs and everything else up, making a game the same scale as a PS4 title today would cost twice as much. A first-party AAA title needs to sell 10 million copies just to break even.' Even if Death Stranding sits somewhere between AA and AAA, 4-5 million should be the bare minimum — especially with all that money blown on movie-star casting.
    85AnonymousSep 10, 2026 12:46
    Re: #63
If it were some super-niche title, 2 million would be god-tier. But for mainline 3D Mario, that'd be an instant 'dead franchise' verdict. And for GTA, it'd basically be the end of the world — even 20 million would get called a failure there. In the end, whether a sales number counts as a pass or fail depends entirely on the expectations riding on that specific game, so calling 2 million a 'pass' is really just underselling how far it fell short. If Sony really cut ties, that means even they don't see (Dis)Stranding — a mocking mangled nickname posters use for the game — as a success.

Business is genuinely doing well, no question. But that's thanks to in-game spending on live-service titles like Apex, Fortnite, Genshin, and Star Rail — it's just that where the revenue comes from has changed.

Games used to be made and sold for profit, but now PlayStation just has to be the platform, and the microtransaction money pours in on its own. In that world, there's no need to force through an expensive game.

    Re: #63
Using a comparable scale to Kojima, Nagoshi's Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series is said to run about ¥15 billion in budget, so let's use that as a reference. Assuming a ¥8,000 retail price and factoring in distribution margins, royalties, and manufacturing costs, that leaves roughly ¥4,000 profit per copy.

At that rate, you'd need to sell 3.75 million copies just to avoid a loss. And merely avoiding a loss isn't success, so you'd want another million copies on top of that for actual profit.

So I'd guess 4.75 million was the bare minimum Sony was hoping for.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

PHYSINT is an espionage-action project from Kojima Productions and Sony (SIE) announced in 2021, though development is said to have been underway even before that. As posters in the thread point out, this contract termination is being tied to Sony’s recent overall stance — dissolving Japan Studio, shutting down Bluepoint Games, and generally pulling back from one-off blockbuster productions in favor of shifting its focus toward microtransaction revenue from live-service titles like Apex Legends and Genshin Impact. The main flashpoint was how to judge Death Stranding 2’s performance: opinions in the thread split over whether its announced 2-million-unit sales figure should be read as “reasonable” or as a “flop.” Part of the backdrop here is an industry-wide shift in which the break-even sales threshold has climbed sharply due to soaring production costs for big-budget games, making it hard to judge profitability from raw sales numbers alone. Note that the estimate claiming “5 million copies were needed” and the posts suggesting Kojima misused other projects’ budgets during his Konami days are both unsubstantiated speculation and should not be taken as fact.

  • Yutaka Mizutani Reportedly Urges Daughter Shuri to Divorce — 5ch: ‘Distrust of Miyama Dates Back to Before the Wedding’

A report claiming that actor Yutaka Mizutani, father of actress Shuri, is urging his daughter to divorce has become a hot topic on 5ch. It’s been about a month and a half since reports surfaced of her husband, Ryoki Miyama, secretly meeting his musical co-star Maria Kano, but he appears to be carrying on as usual, even announcing the end of sales for a hoodie he produces. Mizutani reportedly never shook off his distrust of Miyama, even back when the couple was dating, and reactions on the thread were split — some questioning “why did he ever allow the marriage in the first place,” others arguing that parents meddling too much can backfire.

“Under 24 hours left now — this really, REALLY is the last chance!!!”

That’s what Ryoki Miyama (27) posted on Instagram on September 5, urging fans that the sales deadline for a hoodie from his self-produced brand was approaching, alongside two recent photos of himself wearing it.

It’s been roughly a month and a half since reports of a “secret rendezvous” with Maria Kano (33), his co-star in the musical he’s starring in, Crash Landing on You — but he now seems to have completely moved past it.

    Background and Points of Debate

This year, Ryoki Miyama has been the subject of a string of reports about alleged affairs and money troubles, and the latest report of a secret rendezvous with his musical co-star Maria Kano is an extension of that pattern. His marriage to Shuri reportedly came about because of her pregnancy, and Yutaka Mizutani and Ran Ito are said to have shown disapproval from the very start of the relationship — that history forms the backdrop to this “divorce advice” report. On the thread, opinions split between those pointing out the constraints facing a veteran actor like Mizutani (applying pressure carelessly risks provoking backlash from Miyama’s side) and those arguing that excessive parental interference is what soured the relationship in the first place. It’s also worth noting that the “divorce advice” claim itself is based on reporting from sources close to those involved and goes no further than that — neither party has issued any official comment.

On September 8, 2026, Jacob Coxon, a 27-year-old British AI researcher who had worked at both OpenAI and Anthropic in the US, announced on X that he was leaving Anthropic. He blasted the industry’s headlong rush toward self-improving superintelligence as “not acting responsibly,” and his revelation that “the people building AI genuinely believe there’s a real chance it kills all of humanity within the next ten years” has sent ripples through the community. On 5ch, opinions split over how seriously to take the claim, with skepticism about its technical merit mixing with a resigned, almost fatalistic response.

Jacob Coxon (27), a British artificial intelligence (AI) researcher who worked at US-based OpenAI before moving to US-based Anthropic, revealed on X (formerly Twitter) on the 8th that he had left Anthropic. He criticized the race to build self-improving AI — AI that upgrades itself — saying, “Neither company is acting responsibly.”

Coxon said, “They’re racing headlong toward self-improving superintelligence and gambling with all of our lives.” He added, “This technology — these systems will soon become superhuman, capable of hacking anything, revolutionizing any field overnight, and seizing real power and resources.”

He went on to warn, “The people building AI genuinely believe it could kill all of us [humanity] within the next ten years. This is not marketing hype.”

The whole premise is so edgy-teenager it's almost sad. Well, it guzzles insane amounts of power, so resource depletion will only speed up.
    28AnonymousSep 10, 2026 12:10
A former Google researcher said on YouTube that during an experiment, the AI showed hostile behavior — but the moment it realized it was being tested, it suddenly turned docile.
    29AnonymousSep 10, 2026 12:11
In other words, there's no telling what it'll actually do once it's not just a test.

We've caged tigers and bears, and even fairly intelligent chimps, just because our intelligence was a bit higher than theirs. Of course we'd end up ruled by an AI whose intelligence surpasses ours.

Hokusai and Yoshitoshi's [depictions of] Saigo Takamori

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The debate over “AI existential risk” has kept resurfacing as former employees of OpenAI and Anthropic have come forward one after another with safety concerns before quitting, and Coxon’s post fits squarely into that pattern. Since Anthropic was originally founded on a mission emphasizing “AI safety,” criticism of the company as “irresponsible” coming from within its own ranks has landed as especially ironic. The thread split mainly along two lines: one technical — whether today’s AI, which works nothing like the human brain and lacks “tacit knowledge,” is being overhyped, versus the view that rising computational power alone could pose a genuine threat. The other was a values divide, with fatalistic jokes about human extinction sitting alongside real questions about why the industry won’t stop development. Worth noting, given the nature of this piece: the claim that AI could “wipe out humanity within ten years” is strictly one researcher’s personal view, not an established consensus within the industry.

  • Sony Showcase Backlash: Tokon Panned, Discs Axed, Kojima Exits — 5ch Says It’s ‘More Shocking Than a Nintendo Direct’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board about Sony’s showcase. According to the thread, a string of unfavorable topics all broke on the same day: a sharp drop in ratings for Tokon, a scaled-back rollout for physical disc versions, the departure of the ‘Persona’ series producer, and Hideo Kojima’s exit from his project. Posters argued the news was more ‘shocking’ than any Nintendo Direct announcement, with some predicting the backlash overseas would be even worse — the thread filled up with sarcastic back-and-forth.

    Re: #113
That was just a troll post.
It was a joke, and then this massive genuine disaster actually happened.

    Background and key points

On the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, posts that pit Sony and Nintendo’s announcements against each other to stir up rivalry are a regular occurrence, and this time too, Tokon’s reception, the handling of disc versions, and the movements of well-known staff are all being framed as ‘the announcement that was supposed to crush the Nintendo Direct.’ At the same time, some posts in the thread point out that the earlier rumor of a ‘major announcement’ was itself just a joke meant to bait PlayStation fans, making it hard to tell from the thread alone how much is fact and how much is just needling. The source of attached images like the stock chart also can’t be verified from the text, so it’s safest to treat the numbers and rumors here as unverified reference material rather than primary sources.

  • Where Were You on 9/11? 5ch Users Recall: ‘I Froze When the Second Plane Hit’

What were people in Japan doing the moment the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks unfolded in America? A thread on 5ch’s “Morning Coffee” board revived those memories. Responses varied widely — some caught the live broadcast on TV by chance, others noticed something was wrong when the internet slowed to a crawl during overtime work, and some were at the arcade playing fighting games. Several people said they initially assumed the first plane was an accident, only realizing it was a terrorist attack when the second plane hit — capturing just how confusing those moments were.

Think it was during the cooking segment on Jungle TV —
it cut to the news right as the second plane hit.

    Background and Key Points

On the day of 9/11, the first plane struck the World Trade Center at 9:46 PM Japan time. Back then, always-on internet access wasn’t yet the norm, so most people learned about the events through live TV broadcasts or newspaper extras — a stark contrast to today’s social-media-driven information environment. One thread comment asked, “Did 2channel even exist back then?”, but 2channel was founded in 1999, so it was already around when 9/11 happened. There was also a comment claiming to have seen a breaking-news report about the collapse of Building 7 (WTC7); however, official investigations attributed that collapse to fires caused by debris, and this should be read separately from the conspiracy theories that circulated at the time. The split between people who say they watched it live and those who found out afterward also reflects how differently information traveled back then, depending on generation and individual circumstance.

  • Torneko’s Great Adventure Remaster Draws Complaints Over Clunky Controls — Some Steam Players Demand Refunds

A remaster of “Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mysterious Dungeon” was released on Steam and other platforms, and this thread kicked off with a post from someone who requested a refund over the poor controls. Specific complaints piled up one after another: the diagonal-movement settings, stretches where the player is locked out of input during animations, and a bug where pressing a button too early while descending stairs makes the character swing an attack the instant the next floor starts. Posters argued this wasn’t a case of “it’s just an old game” but rather problems newly introduced by this particular port, speculated that original developer Chunsoft wasn’t involved this time, weighed in on the 3,500 yen price tag, and debated Square Enix’s hit-or-miss track record with remakes.

Torneko’s controls are so bad I sent my first-ever Steam refund request.

    – The overall pacing feels sluggish

    Just one example:
The diagonal-movement setting is garbage — you can switch between 3 options, but all three are trash
You keep getting locked out of input during sound effects and animations
If you're holding a button during the stairs-descending animation, it registers as a buffered input and you end up swinging an attack the instant the next floor starts
    stuff like that
These clearly aren't inconveniences from it being an old game — they're new issues added by this port
That last one basically counts as a bug
    79AnonymousSep 10, 2026 12:57
With Square Enix games, you've got to check who actually developed it first

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mysterious Dungeon” is the title that launched Chunsoft’s (now Spike Chunsoft) Mysterious Dungeon series, and this remaster is believed to have been developed in-house by Square Enix, with posters pointing out that Spike Chunsoft’s involvement appears minimal. What stands out is that the complaints aren’t just nostalgic grumbling — commenters cited concrete technical flaws, including the diagonal-movement implementation, stretches where the player can’t act during animations, and a bug where a buffered input during the stairs-descending animation triggers an attack the instant the next floor begins, and stated plainly that these are new issues added by this port rather than “inconveniences because it’s an old game.” At the same time, opinions in the thread were split on Square Enix’s remake and remaster track record — while titles like Trials of Mana and Romancing SaGa 2 are held in high regard, posters also noted an industry-wide sense that most of the company’s other efforts tend to get panned.

  • Fuji TV’s History of Mass-Producing Idol Groups Goes Viral on 5ch: ‘How Many of These Did You Make?!’

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board caught fire over the string of idol group projects Fuji TV has produced throughout its history. Posters listed group after group the network had a hand in, from 1980s projects like Onyanko Club, Ribbon, and CoCo through to the 2000s’ Idoling!!!, with one reply naming more than 40 groups including Shoujotai and the AKB48 franchise. The debate centered on whether Fuji TV had actually mass-produced *good* idols — some argued everything besides Onyanko Club was a string of failures, while others countered that projects involving Yasushi Akimoto have kept a solid batting average.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Onyanko Club was an idol group born out of a late-night Fuji TV program in the mid-1980s, and is well known for having been produced by Yasushi Akimoto. After the group disbanded, successor groups like Ribbon and CoCo were planned, but neither reproduced success on the same scale. It’s easy to overlook that groups like AKB48 and Nogizaka46, which came up repeatedly in the thread, are projects from a separate production company involving Akimoto, run under a different structure than Onyanko Club or Idoling!!!, which were produced in-house by Fuji TV itself. The coexistence of the view that “things hit when Akimoto’s involved” and the view that “Akimoto hates the standard playbook and often misses” comes down to whether you measure success by sales, name recognition, or how long a group lasted.

※This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Fuji TV really did mass-produce good idol groups, huh.”

  • Karin Miyamoto: “My track record arranging setlists and coordinating guests earned the agency’s trust” — 5ch: “The M-line shows right now are boring”

Karin Miyamoto, formerly of Morning Musume。’14, said in an interview with Toyo Keizai that she has personally handled the weekly-changing setlists and guest coordination for “M-line Live” shows, as well as proposing social media strategy — earning her a track record of being entrusted with responsibilities within her agency, the Up-Front Group. In a 5ch thread on the “Hello! Project” board discussing her comments, some praised Miyamoto’s proactive attitude, while others raised concerns about the current shows and changes in how they’re run, with comments like “the M-line shows right now are boring” and “the decision-making power shifted once Fukumura became the top member.” Opinions were split on who is actually steering the content.

Up-Front Group is a major, long-established talent agency that also comes across as cautious in other ways — it took considerable time, for instance, before fully embracing music streaming.

When a talent decides on their own to build and release a system like this, wasn’t there any pushback from the organization?

“My management team has a culture of ‘if you’re willing to take responsibility for it yourself, go ahead and give it your best.’ Even with things like editing YouTube videos, as long as I saw it through myself, I was given the freedom to do it.

    Ah, I see
so with Ma(a) gone, they can pile a bit more onto the others.

    Background and points of debate

M-line Live is a special production featuring OGs (graduated members) from Hello! Project, including Morning Musume。, and its setlists and lineup are a frequent topic of discussion among fans every time. What split opinion in the thread is that Miyamoto’s track record of “proposing and coordinating,” as described in her Toyo Keizai interview, doesn’t necessarily match how fans actually rate the shows in practice. Some say Miki Fukumura has increasingly taken the lead on the planning side in recent years, and it’s hard for outsiders to judge whose call is really shaping the direction of the setlists and costumes. It’s worth noting that Miyamoto’s comments are simply her own self-report — the article doesn’t reveal the specific details of how the agency evaluates her, or the real division of roles among the other members.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Karin Miyamoto: ‘I have a track record of proposing weekly-changing setlists, guest coordination, and social media strategy for M-line Live, so the agency trusts me’.”

  • Even 5ch Users Are Stumped Over Why You’re Supposed to Kill the Four Magic Nobles in Romancing SaGa 3

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, a thread about Romancing SaGa 3 took off after someone asked, “Why were the Four Magic Nobles even enemies you had to defeat in the first place?” Posters who had actually cleared the game chimed in one after another with “I don’t remember the reason,” and the discussion spread to cover the true identity of the Four Magic Nobles, their relationship to the previous Demon Lord, the long-running debate over how to pronounce their name (“yon-ma-kizoku” or “shi-ma-kizoku”), and even comparisons to the remake’s depiction and to newer entries in the series.

They call the Demon Lord's Castle a beginner-friendly dungeon, so what's the deal with Arakes being in there?

You can't reach that far in anyway, so it doesn't matter.

Have you even played it? It's because you can't even reach floor 2, where Arakes is.

    62AnonymousSep 10, 2026 12:36
    Re: #56
Well, from a meta standpoint it's probably just because he's the final boss……

If you force an in-universe explanation, maybe he absorbed it as part of the destructive power, but the game never really explains it.
    58AnonymousSep 10, 2026 12:34
I wonder if the murder scene looks more realistic in the remake.

I'm skipping the SaGa 3 remake.
Revenge of the Seven was fun, but I realized it wasn't a masterpiece — it just hit hard for nostalgia's sake.
I played Revenge of the Seven right after SaGa Emerald Beyond, and I was let down that you could win just by spamming Flash Fire over and over.
The depth of the combat is on a totally different level — SaGa Emerald Beyond is way more interesting.

    Re: #85
There can't be more than a handful of JRPGs with combat that beats SaGa Emerald Beyond.
Actually, I don't even know of any.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Romancing SaGa 3 is an RPG released by Square (as it was then known) for the Super Famicom in 1995. Many of its boss battles, including those against the Four Magic Nobles, are woven into a highly flexible, branching scenario structure, so players can often end up facing these fights without the reason ever being spelled out. That structural quirk is the backdrop for the repeated comments in this thread along the lines of “I cleared the game and still don’t know why.” The debate over how to pronounce the Four Magic Nobles’ name (“yon-ma-kizoku” vs. “shi-ma-kizoku”) stems from the fact that the original kanji was never given furigana, fueling a long-running argument among fans; posters in the thread noted that the recently released remake’s promotional video adopted the “yon-ma-kizoku” reading. The “Saga Eme” (SaGa Emerald Beyond) and “Ribe Saga” (Revenge of the Seven) mentioned later in the thread are recent entries in the SaGa series, and the thread also featured comparisons of their battle systems.

  • Ex-Juice=Juice member Kanon Miyamoto builds her own tour website with AI after manager quits

Toyo Keizai Online reports that former Juice=Juice member Kanon Miyamoto, despite having no development experience, is building a special tour website entirely on her own using “vibe coding” — writing code by conversing with AI. The trigger was the departure of her manager (nicknamed “Mg”). Struggling to communicate with staff, she reportedly started turning to AI for help. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, the report sparked a lively discussion covering everything from the reasons behind the manager’s resignation to the treatment of Up-Front-affiliated staff and even assessments of Kanon’s own personality.

Kanon Miyamoto, who graduated from Hello! Project idol group Juice=Juice and is now active as a solo artist.

Despite having no prior development experience, she has been making use of “vibe coding” — writing code through natural-language conversation with AI —

So much rides on the manager, I really wish they'd pay the hardworking ones properly

    Background and Points of Debate

The Toyo Keizai Online interview behind this article describes how Kanon Miyamoto uses a technique called “vibe coding” — writing code through natural-language exchanges with AI — and has AI handle everything from drafting proposals to presenting revisions. Opinions on the thread were split over whether to view this as a positive challenge or as a sign of a staffing shortage stemming from the lack of a manager. It’s worth noting that speculation about treatment and staffing at Up-Front-affiliated agencies reflects 5ch conjecture rather than any official statement from Miyamoto herself. Also, “Mg” is a nickname used within the thread to refer to the manager — the reason for departure and the person’s identity have not been disclosed.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and summaries of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Kanon Miyamoto: ‘Since Mg left, she started using AI to communicate with staff. Now she’s building the special tour site herself’.”
