  • Kochi Sends Passing Notices to 221 Teacher Candidates — More Than Double the Open Slots — 5ch Asks: “Why Apply If You’re Just Going to Turn It Down?”

On September 11, the Kochi Prefectural Board of Education announced the results of its public school teacher hiring exam for 2027 appointments. Elementary school teaching posts have seen a string of resignations among successful candidates in recent years — seven in ten declined the year before last, and six in ten declined last year — so this time the board notified 221 people that they had passed, more than double the number of positions actually available. The prefecture has also moved up the timing of its supplementary exam by a month compared with last year. On the 5ch thread, comments poured in from all angles — from puzzlement over why people decline offers after passing, to debates over temp hiring, the now-scrapped teaching license renewal system, and the realities of teacher pay and retirement benefits.

Elementary Teachers Keep Declining Even After Passing: Kochi Notifies 221 Candidates — More Than Double the Planned Hires — as 70% Declined the Year Before Last and 60% Last Year

    Yomiuri Shimbun

The Kochi Prefectural Board of Education announced on the 11th the results of its selection process for the public school teacher hiring exam for 2027 appointments. Of the 1,128 people who sat the exam, a total of 382 passed across elementary, junior high, high school, and other prefectural schools. For elementary schools, where successful candidates have frequently turned down offers in recent years, the board notified 221 people that they had passed — more than double the planned number of hires. A supplementary hiring exam, anticipating further declines, will also be held on November 15, a month earlier than last year.

I took the elementary teacher hiring exam over and over and kept failing — I'm from the Employment Ice Age generation (Japan's brutal 1990s–2000s job market). I'd probably pass if I took it now, but I hate the idea of more workload, so I've just kept doing temp contracts.
Meanwhile the ones who went permanent burned out and dropped away…

I had a classmate from elementary school, probably the same Ice Age generation as you, who passed straight through and got hired straight into a permanent elementary post. It was brutal — nonstop overwork on top of student guidance and club duties — and a few years in she had a mental breakdown and quit three years later.
Her husband tells her not to push herself, but she doesn't even have the energy to start a new job, so it looks like she's just going to end up a stay-at-home wife.

All that complaining is exactly what led to fewer people wanting to become teachers, and here we are.
Elementary teachers these days are mostly grads from schools you've never heard of (bottom-tier "F-rank" universities), and now even they've stopped coming.

Homeroom teachers aren't announced until the first day of the new term anyway.
With the labor shortage these days, it's completely normal for a first-year homeroom teacher to just be someone covering for a teacher on maternity leave.
And it's hit or miss — sometimes you get a genuinely great veteran — so you really can't say either way.
For the kids it's a homeroom-teacher lottery ("tannin gacha"), and for the teacher it's just as risky — a kid lottery and a parent lottery right back.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The number of people who “pass” a teacher hiring exam doesn’t necessarily match the number who actually get hired. With elementary schools facing a growing shortage of people willing to become teachers, 70% of successful candidates declined before starting the year before last, and 60% declined last year. This time, Kochi Prefecture is trying to fill the gap by notifying 221 candidates that they passed — more than double the number of positions actually planned. Behind this lies the fact that even though the teaching license renewal system was abolished in 2022, the burden of long working hours and club-activity supervision hasn’t changed, and cases of teachers leaving within just a few years of being hired permanently remain common. The thread showed a split between those criticizing the system design that produced this situation and those framing it as a rational choice by teachers who deliberately stay non-permanent. It’s also easy to overlook that a rise in the number of passing candidates doesn’t necessarily mean the teacher shortage is actually being resolved.

  • SIE-owned studios keep shutting down — 5ch: “Hardware’s next on the chopping block”

Under SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment), reports of studio restructuring and canceled projects keep piling up: following the 2024 closures of London Studio and Firewalk Studios, we’ve now seen the shutdowns of Bluepoint Games and Dark Outlaw Games, a scaled-back rollout of physical discs, and the cancellation of a project led by Hideo Kojima. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, posts mocking the sheer number of these “cuts” piled up, while opinions split between those questioning why the company would shrink its operations amid reportedly strong earnings, and others pushing back with data showing the division’s overall headcount has actually grown even after the reductions.

SIE is shifting toward actively backing Chinese and Korean games

Background and key points of this discussion

Since shutting down its Japan Studio in 2021, SIE has repeatedly restructured its portfolio of studios, including acquired ones, and the recent string of closures and canceled projects discussed here is an extension of that pattern. Opinion in the thread split over how earnings can look strong even as the business appears to be shrinking at the same time — some argued the cost-cutting is what’s boosting profit margins, while others saw it as simply reining in investment in new IP development. One reply also pointed to overall group headcount figures, which had actually trended upward rather than down, a detail that shows studio closures don’t necessarily line up one-to-one with the group’s total staffing moves. Worth keeping in mind while reading: it would be premature to conclude, based on the sheer number of closures alone, that the organization’s overall headcount or investment is shrinking.

Some self-proclaimed music connoisseurs lose their minds if you say Japanese lyrics matter lol
But of course Japanese people care about the Japanese language — that's just natural, isn't it lol

Background and key points of this discussion

Yutaka Ozaki was one of the defining rock singers of the 1980s, known for songs like “Graduation,” “15 no Yoru” (“Night of the Fifteen-Year-Old”), and “I LOVE YOU” that captured the rebellious feelings of Japanese youth. The launch of his official YouTube and TikTok accounts is being framed as a video-archive rollout timed to his 60th birth anniversary, with music videos and live footage set to be released over time. Thread reactions ranged from surprise that he would have turned 60 had he lived, to speculation over whether he could have kept performing his old rebellious material into his sixties, to remarks that lyrics like “riding off on a stolen bike” would read as far more extreme by today’s standards. At the same time, the circumstances of his sudden death and his personal relationships have long been the subject of speculation online, much of which remains unconfirmed — readers should be cautious about treating rumors circulating on the internet as established fact.

  • Romancing SaGa 3 Remake Moves Protagonist Selection to After the ‘Roanne Uprising’

Square Enix has revealed — during an official livestream celebrating the announcement of Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United — that it’s scrapping the original game’s feature of choosing your protagonist right at the outset. In the original, players picked one of eight candidates before setting off on their journey, but in the remake, everyone will first play through the “Roanne Uprising” chapter, where all the protagonists join forces, and only choose their protagonist afterward. The thread was split between people welcoming a shared opening chapter and those worried about pacing on repeat playthroughs and how characters like Katarina and Mikhail — who had their own unique opening scenarios — will be handled.

In Square Enix’s Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, players won’t choose their protagonist at the start of the game as they did in the original. Instead, the structure is being revised so that players first go through the entirety of the Roanne Uprising, getting to know each character, and only then pick whichever protagonist they like.

This was revealed by producer Shin’ichi Tazuke during an official livestream celebrating the game’s announcement. In the original Romancing SaGa 3, players began their adventure by picking one protagonist from eight candidates right at the start, but in the remake, players will first play through the Roanne Uprising in full before choosing a protagonist.

Kind of like Octopath Traveler. But Romancing SaGa 3 genuinely had everyone experience the same opening event from different perspectives at first, so this actually seems fine.

    7AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:47
That sounds like a tedious structure. I always picked Katarina or Mikhail specifically because their openings wrapped up fast.
    8AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:47
They'll probably let you skip the opening on a second playthrough. Though on the flip side, that also means you won't be able to strip Mikhail of his gear and steal it anymore lol

Well, it's basically the equivalent of Gerard's era from RS2, isn't it.
    11AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:50

Romancing SaGa's story and objectives are never quite clear anyway, so I think adding a shared opening at the start is a good idea. Still, I wish something could be done about the art having zero personality. Japanese anime-style art has gotten rough lately — everyone has the same pretty face, just different hair and clothes. It looks like AI art.

Anyway, please stop making every single character good-looking, it's creepy.

Sounds like it's going to be a bloated game that forces you to sit through a long opening event first. The whole point people praised Romancing SaGa for was building your character and then diving straight into the game — but with Kawazu and co. shoving their self-indulgence on us again, it looks like it's going to lose its way once more.

Re: #88 Aren't you confusing it with a movie? Have you actually played the original?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The original Romancing SaGa 3 (1994) is known for letting players pick one protagonist from eight candidates right at the start, with branching story elements where unchosen protagonists could later appear as enemies. The newly announced remake changes this so that players first experience the “Roanne Uprising,” where all the protagonists join forces, before choosing their protagonist. On the thread, some welcomed making the Uprising chapter a shared experience, while others raised concerns about how characters like Katarina and Mikhail — who had unique opening scenarios in the original — will be handled, and whether the comfort of repeat playthroughs will suffer. There was also some confusion in the thread over whether the Uprising chapter is a movie/cutscene or a playable section, exposing a gap in shared assumptions between those who had and hadn’t played the original. It’s also worth noting that details not explicitly stated in the livestream, such as how the character-renaming feature will be handled, remain speculative for now.

  • Hello! Project idol Yonemura Kirara puts soy sauce in the lid of her packaged sushi — 5ch: “This isn’t a seafood rice bowl”

A thread noting that Hello! Project idol Yonemura Kirara pours soy sauce into the lid of her packaged sushi container while eating drew attention and became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. It’s a common enough sight when there’s no small dish available while out and about, but the thread split between people calling it “bad manners” and those saying “using the lid as a soy sauce dish is totally normal,” spiraling into a full-blown debate over sushi-eating etiquette. Background and Key Points of This Topic

Whether to use the lid of packaged sushi as a stand-in soy sauce dish is a perennial debate that resurfaces on 5ch from time to time, and this round was sparked by a Hello! Project idol’s behavior. Behind it lies a practical reality — “at home you can bring out a small dish, but on the job or out and about, the lid is your only option” — and defenders of the practice were actually in the majority in the thread. What split opinion instead was the etiquette of eating sushi itself: whether to dissolve wasabi into the soy sauce or dab it straight onto the fish. The claim that “dissolving wasabi is bad form” is a popular notion that spread from the manga Oishinbo, not an officially established rule of etiquette. What readers can easily get wrong is that, while this kind of thread looks like it’s buzzing with criticism over “bad manners,” most of the replies are actually casual chatter and “oh, I do that too” anecdotes about eating habits rather than pointed accusations of an actual etiquette violation.

The thread also floated theories that the move was a “course correction” after weak sales for the autumn concerts, along with complaints about the group’s stage direction — reactions that spread well beyond the graduation announcement itself.

    Background and Talking Points

In Hello! Project, it’s standard for several months to half a year to pass between a graduation announcement and the actual graduation date, with a solo graduation concert or tour held in between — and no concrete graduation date was confirmed alongside this announcement either. The “next spring” and “around June next year” timeframes floated in the thread are purely speculation from posters, not official statements, and should be read as such. Likewise, the claim that she would also “retire from the entertainment industry” drew calls from other posters in the thread for a source, and remains unverified. Hashisako was born in 2005 and is often discussed alongside other group members from the same age bracket, but since joining dates and career milestones differ from group to group, such direct comparisons are hard to draw meaningfully.

  • Concerns over food poisoning from Ebata Hisaki’s homemade bread — 5ch: “No one in human history has ever gotten food poisoning from bread”

After Hello! Project idol group Juice=Juice member Ebata Hisaki brought in homemade bread as a treat for the group, a thread titled “If someone gets food poisoning, will Juice=Juice be suspended from performing?” popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. No actual illness was reported — it’s purely hypothetical — but posters debated the wisdom of homemade food gifts and the food-safety risks involved. Some offered concrete points like “it’s fine if you eat it the same day” and “there’s no preservatives, so it won’t keep long,” while others just joked around, making for a thread that mixed genuine concern with plenty of teasing.

    48AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:45
The bread itself is baked, so that part's fine — but if she handled it with bare hands afterward, that's where it goes wrong.

    Re: #67
    Wait, was that even bread?
    84AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:54
It's fine as long as you eat it the day it's baked. No preservatives, so day two could get risky!! Store-bought bread lasts a month without spoiling thanks to preservatives.

    Background and talking points

It’s worth clearing up that the question “will they be suspended if someone gets food poisoning?” is purely hypothetical — no actual case of food poisoning at Juice=Juice has occurred. Whether a talent agency or idol group actually halts activities depends case by case on health department guidance and the severity of any harm — there’s no blanket rule. Some replies in the thread reflect real food-safety know-how, like “bread baked that same day is fine” and “without preservatives it spoils faster from the next day on,” offering genuinely useful pointers for handling homemade food gifts, not just jokes. That said, a handful of posts crossed into crude jokes about the idol’s body and bodily functions, and those were excluded from this writeup. The overall vibe of the thread sits somewhere between fans’ genuine concern and edgy joking around.

  • ‘We Need a Festival Precisely Because People Are Leaving TV’ — Nippon TV Revives Ultra Quiz After 30 Years

On September 10, Nippon Television held a briefing on its October programming lineup at Shiodome, Tokyo, announcing that to mark the show’s 50th anniversary, it will revive “Ultra Quiz: Across America” as a New Year’s special for the first time in about 30 years. Shuichi Oi, head of the network’s General Programming Center, reportedly explained that it’s precisely because viewers are drifting away from TV that a big “festival”-style production is needed. On the 5ch Entertainment/Sports News+ thread reacting to the announcement, posters traded opinions on whether America — once a dream destination — still holds the same appeal for today’s youth, who might host the show, and whether the budget will match the show’s heyday.

Nippon Television held its October programming briefing on the 10th at its Shiodome offices in Tokyo. Regarding “Ultra Quiz: Across America” (slated to air over the New Year holidays), which returns after roughly 30 years to mark the show’s 50th anniversary, General Programming Center department head Shuichi Oi explained why now — amid the ongoing drift away from television — is the moment to bring it back.

    ■ “The weak yen makes it tough, doesn’t it” — yet here’s why they’re reviving it anyway

    Re: #96
I used to think that by the 21st century we'd have quiz shows going to space, but I guess we haven't progressed that far after all.

Background and Key Points of Debate

“Ultra Quiz: Across America” was a beloved NTV special that drew huge popularity from the 1970s through the 1990s, and this marks its revival after roughly 30 years to coincide with the show’s 50th anniversary. Nippon TV’s stated reasoning — that now, amid the ongoing drift away from television, is exactly the right time — reflects a backdrop in which the spread of streaming services keeps eroding real-time viewership among younger audiences; the network appears to be betting that a large-scale location shoot can generate buzz by recreating that old “festival” atmosphere. Thread opinion split mainly along two lines. The first concerns the pull of “America” itself as a destination: several posters noted that between the weak yen and the wider range of overseas travel options now available, it no longer holds the same aspirational status it once did. The second is the choice of host: names like Isao Fukutome and Akira Fukuzawa, who hosted in the show’s heyday, came up nostalgically, but no actual casting has been confirmed, and it’s worth noting that most of these comments are speculation predating any official announcement. Some posters also worried about a shrunken budget or fewer filming locations, though the briefing didn’t reveal any specifics on production details.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “‘We Need a Festival Precisely Now, With TV Losing Viewers’ — NTV’s Thoughts Behind Reviving ‘Ultra Quiz: Across America’ With a Massive Production Budget.”

  • Grew Up in a National University’s Feeder School, Still Ended Up a Jobless College-Grad NEET — 5ch: ‘Guess I Can Blame My Genes, Right?’

The original poster was enrolled by their high-school-educated parents in an elementary and junior high school affiliated with a national university, but now, after graduating from college, they say they’re unemployed — a NEET (“Not in Education, Employment, or Training”). Most of their classmates went on from elite universities straight into top-tier corporations, and when the poster asked 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board (a general chat/live-discussion board) whether it was fair to chalk the gap up to “genetics,” it sparked a lively debate. Most replies pushed back with “it’s environment, not genes” and “it’s effort, not environment,” and a string of posters shared their own stories of getting into elite universities despite having only high-school-educated parents. The original poster, however, refused to budge to the end, insisting “my parents putting me in a national school is the root cause,” and kept blaming environmental factors for striking out completely in job hunting. Even when others suggested research work or grad school, they brushed the ideas off as uninteresting, and the debate stayed at a standstill.

So I'm a NEET after graduating college.

I'm only interested in landing a top-tier company job.
So there's no point going to grad school.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Elementary and junior high schools affiliated with national universities were originally set up as training sites for student teachers, and admission is usually decided by lottery or aptitude test — they aren’t necessarily “elite feeder schools” directly tied to the university itself. Even so, as commenters pointed out, it’s a well-established idea in the sociology of education that one’s surrounding family environment and level of educational drive strongly shapes one’s path. What divided the thread was the classic debate over whether “genetics” (innate intelligence) or “environment” (parents’ educational investment and one’s own effort) determines outcomes — with voices favoring the latter winning out, while the original poster stood apart by sticking to “it’s my parents’ fault” right to the end. The “rich and poor babies switched at birth” story mentioned in reply #54 appears to reference an actual newborn mix-up case in Japan, in which the child raised in the wealthier family went on to graduate college while the one raised in the poorer family only finished high school — a case that later went to trial and is fairly well known. While a statistical correlation between education level and income does exist, it’s a common misconception that an individual’s job-hunting results can be explained by environment alone.

  • Gas stations vanishing faster in rural Japan — 5ch: “Might have to drive dozens of kilometers just to find one”

According to a survey by Teikoku Databank, bankruptcies and voluntary closures among gas station operators have risen for five straight years running, with more than 1,700 companies disappearing over the past decade. In rural areas, filling stations have grown scarce — in the mountains of Hakone, there’s reportedly a large sign warning “Only two gas stations ahead.” On the thread, users debated whether this signals a full-scale shift to EVs, or whether gasoline demand still holds strong for things like portable fuel cans and farm equipment, drawing on the realities of rural life.

Last week I went to Hakone, and right around where Route 1 enters Hakone-machi, there was a huge sign that said:
"Caution! Only two gas stations ahead in the Hakone mountains!"

In rural areas people keep portable fuel cans in the car
since they use gasoline for brush cutters and farm equipment too.

Hybrids, maybe, but you barely see EVs out in the countryside. Aren't you mixing something up?
    70AnonymousSep 12, 2026 13:19
There used to be a ton of stations open pretty much round the clock,
but nowadays if you're driving through the countryside at night, you'd better check ahead of time or you're in for a rough time.

If portable fuel cans were that prone to exploding, motorcycles would be blowing up all over the place, no? Their tanks are basically the same thing.

    Re: #121
In the end that's the only way.
Build EV charging gear at roadside stations and shopping malls like AEON, and push home charging the rest of the way.
For travel, ryokan and hotels will just have to install chargers.

    Re: #121
At current charging rates it doesn't even pay for itself.

That car called the "Rakko" ("sea otter" — a cheap compact EV) actually seems like it'd quietly sell well in rural areas.
No current Japanese automaker could pull off those specs.
    126AnonymousSep 12, 2026 13:57
    Re: #123
Probably won't sell — if it breaks down there's nowhere nearby to fix it out in the countryside.

    Re: #123
Heard that exact same line when the Sakura launched too.

For old folks in rural areas who don't want anything to change, installing home charging along with an EV is a high hurdle.
They'd probably forget to charge it every day anyway.
    134AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:00
There's not much to fix on an EV, right?
Just stuff like brake pads and tire changes.
    137AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:01
    Re: #134
What about brake fluid? Even if you barely drive, it absorbs moisture and degrades over time.
    143AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:03
    Re: #134
    Brake fluid
    Wiper rubber/blades
    AC filter
    Coolant (for the motor/battery)
12V battery (most EVs still have one)

    Re: #133
That incident happened because a fuel can placed right next to a generator's exhaust vent got abnormally hot,
and since it was filled almost to the cap, the gasoline that sprayed out when the cap was opened caught fire.
    That's not an explosion.
    Re: #134
The suspension is the same as on an engine car, so tie-rod end boots need replacing every few tens of thousands of kilometers
    — sooner if you're doing a lot of tight turns on mountain roads.
    182AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:26
Are EVs (probably meant "EV," typo'd as "ED") on the rise? Wouldn't opening a charging station be profitable then?
    192AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:32
    Re: #182
Even now, with low upfront investment and subsidies covering almost the whole installation cost, charging stations still aren't profitable.
Demand is small because there just aren't many EVs out there, and home charging is convenient.
Tesla owners mostly charge at home or at Superchargers, so they're not going to bother with CHAdeMO except in an emergency.
    185AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:28
It's not just gas stations — decent repair shops have really thinned out too.
Some shady shops deliberately damage worn parts and then act like "it was already like that," others take payment upfront and just keep pushing the delivery date back with no explanation.

For older cars, parts supply is drying up too, so maybe the only option left is to give up on cars as a hobby and just treat cheap Chinese EVs as disposable.

Around here they've actually been increasing lately.
Is it just the dying rural hamlets where they're disappearing?
    201AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:35
    Re: #187
    What's disappearing is the old-fashioned full-service stations.
    Self-service stations keep slowly increasing.
For now it's really just customers consolidating around wherever they can still get gas.

On remote islands there are so few stations that EVs seem to have become the mainstream choice.

    Re: #197
"Mainstream"? You should probably separate "remote islands have a higher EV ratio than the national average" from "mainstream."

According to data as of July 2025 (compiled by Miyakojima City's Eco Island Promotion Division), the number of EVs registered in the city is 423, putting the EV share of all vehicles on the road there at about 0.75%.
    For comparison, other areas:
    ・Okinawa Prefecture overall: about 0.29% ・Ishigaki City: about 0.17% (84 vehicles) ・National average: about 0.3%
    218AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:43
Given typical replacement cycles, even by 2030 Japan's EV adoption rate will likely still only be in the 10% range on its own,
but from around 2035 it'll climb into the 30% range,
and by 2040 it'll pass the halfway mark.
After 2040, engine vehicles will only be sold for niche special-use cases, so it'll effectively become forced EV adoption.

    Re: #218
    Sounds like Honda's blueprint.
    223AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:46
    Re: #218
If "adoption rate" means share of new car sales, then EVs would need a 30% share of new car sales for 10 straight years just to bring gasoline cars down by 30%.

Background and key points of debate

The decline in gas stations isn’t simply down to EV adoption. It traces back to the 1998 deregulation of station openings, which drove a shift from full-service to self-service stations; under that thin-margin, high-volume model, smaller operators without the financial cushion to compete have been dropping out ever since. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry treats municipalities with three or fewer stations as “gas station deserts,” a designation that also matters for securing fuel during disasters. Where the thread split was over whether rural fuel demand will keep centering on gasoline going forward, or genuinely shift over to EVs and charging networks. On the question of storing portable fuel cans, one claim that they “explode” got corrected — the real festival incident involved gasoline igniting after spraying out under high heat, not a straightforward spontaneous explosion. It’s also easy to miss from the article alone that the “over 1,700 companies gone” figure includes not just bankruptcies but plenty of voluntary closures due to a lack of successors.
