  • Saudi Oil Pipeline Halted After Attacks — 5ch: “The US Has Zero Intention of Defending Us”

Saudi Arabia’s crude oil pipeline was hit by multiple attacks on September 10, leaving casualties and prompting a precautionary shutdown. The pipeline had been growing in importance as an alternate route bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively blockaded by Iran — but the other detour, the area around the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, is controlled by the pro-Iran Houthi militia, and reports say President Trump turned down a Saudi request to strike the Houthis. On 5ch, users traded doubts about whether the US really intends to defend its ally Saudi Arabia, along with theories on why Saudi Arabia hasn’t simply retaliated.

[Cairo, Kyodo] Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy announced on the 11th that the crude oil pipeline running east-west across the country had been hit by multiple attacks and was being shut down as a “precautionary measure.” The attack occurred on the morning of the 10th and left several people injured. The pipeline had been gaining importance as an alternate route to the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively blockaded by Iran.

Meanwhile, the US news site Axios reported on the 11th that President Trump had, on the 10th, turned down a Saudi request to strike Yemen’s pro-Iran Houthi militia, which controls the area around the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait oil transport route. The US reportedly has no intention of intervening directly, wanting to keep its focus on the Iran situation, though American officials indicated they would offer intelligence on the Houthis and help with target selection.

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait has become an alternate oil export route to the Strait of Hormuz. According to Middle Eastern media, the Houthis control strategic islands in the strait as well as port cities along the Red Sea coast, and fighting with forces of Yemen’s transitional government is believed to be ongoing.

Saudi Arabia's got money but they're weak in actual combat.
They've been at war with the Houthis for over 10 years now and still can't win.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic chokepoint linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, is considered a lifeline for oil transport on par with the Strait of Hormuz. In recent years, Yemen’s pro-Iran Houthi militia has seized control of coastal areas and nearby islands and repeatedly attacked passing ships, and this pipeline attack is believed to be an extension of that pattern. As custodian of Islam’s holy sites of Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia has little choice but to act cautiously in its foreign military actions, and despite pouring enormous sums into defense spending, it has failed to secure a decisive victory over the Houthis in more than a decade of fighting. While the thread debated whether the US should get involved and the design flaw of relying on a single pipeline, it’s worth noting that posts about Japan’s auto industry or Chinese EVs were unrelated tangents with no factual bearing on this news.

  • Over 200 Bullet Train Passengers Left Stranded After Nagaoka Fireworks — JR Had Flagged the Risk Back in February

After the Nagaoka Festival’s Grand Fireworks Display held on August 2 in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, more than 200 passengers were unable to board the last Joetsu Shinkansen non-reserved-seat train bound for Tokyo. Reporting by the Niigata Nippo has revealed that JR East had already voiced concerns back in February about the proposed changes to the festival’s program, warning there was “a risk some people won’t be able to board.” JR East reportedly asked the Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation to reconsider, but the request went unheeded. On 5ch, opinions were split over whether the Foundation had given adequate advance notice, and over the rule preventing Shinkansen trains from running after midnight.

Regarding the issue in which large numbers of visitors were unable to board the last Tokyo-bound Joetsu Shinkansen non-reserved-seat train after the Nagaoka Festival’s Grand Fireworks Display held in Nagaoka City on August 2, it has been learned — through reporting by the Niigata Nippo, as of the 12th — that JR East had already expressed reluctance in late February, when shown the proposed program changes, warning that “there is a concern people will be unable to board the last train.” JR East reportedly asked the organizing Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation to reconsider, but says its request was not accepted.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Nagaoka Festival’s Grand Fireworks Display originated as a memorial for the victims of the Nagaoka air raid near the end of the Pacific War — it isn’t simply a tourist event, and that history is baked into how it’s run. At the same time, Shinkansen trains can’t operate past midnight due to maintenance work, so even when the fireworks wrap up sometime in the 8 p.m. hour, it’s structurally common for visitors to miss the last train to Tokyo. What came to light this time is that JR East had already flagged concerns about the proposed schedule change back in February, yet the Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation didn’t reconsider. On the thread, opinion was split: some credited the Foundation for publicizing in advance that staying to the end would mean missing the last Shinkansen, while others criticized the response as inadequate, arguing that real countermeasures — like extra trains or addressing the hotel shortage — were still lacking. Some called for making every seat reserved, but others pointed out that even reserved-seat cars end up with standing passengers in the aisles during peak season, so that alone wouldn’t be a complete fix.

  • US IGN blasts: ‘PlayStation’s future has never looked bleaker’ — 5ch: ‘Let’s be real, they’re done for’

A US IGN opinion piece points to the Metacritic score of Insomniac Games’ new release, ‘Marvel’s Wolverine,’ dropping below 80 as evidence that “PlayStation’s future has never looked bleaker.” The piece is written by a longtime admirer of Sony’s story-focused, single-player-driven approach, and comes against a backdrop of headwinds for the PlayStation camp — including the early shutdown of the competitive shooter ‘Concord,’ studio restructuring, and the end of Sony’s partnership with Hideo Kojima. On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, reactions split between those agreeing with the assessment and those pushing back by pointing to Sony’s strong financial results.

PlayStation’s Future Has Never Looked Bleaker (PlayStation’s future has never looked more clouded over.)

It’s hard to imagine how PlayStation leadership felt watching so many critics shrug with indifference and walk away from Insomniac’s ‘Wolverine.’

A Metacritic score under 80 is, as anyone in the AAA space knows, considered a “disaster.” It surely isn’t fun for Sony either, but for a company its size, it would be easy enough to write off as “an uncharacteristic one-off mistake.”

Sorry, but Sony's games had something special back in the PS1 era, but by the PS2 era they already had one foot in mediocrity.
Game media never bothered learning any game philosophy and just kept heaping praise purely because the graphics kept improving, so Sony has been living under that delusion
    for 20 years straight.

Even now, the top criterion for GOTY is basically 'big-budget with good graphics,' right?
That's exactly why I'm calling you all shallow.

And yet their earnings and stock price numbers look great — it's a genuinely strange company.
What's even stranger is that even though their own earnings look great, you never hear anything good coming out of their affiliated companies, and more and more of them keep pulling away from PlayStation.
Where are those numbers even really coming from?

That's because PlayStation basically equals Japanese third-party publishers —
foreign developers and foreign studios are just a bonus on the side.

Xbox fanboys aren't Japanese, so they desperately trash Sony's Western-style games,
but honestly nobody here cares, and domestically Onimusha would outsell them anyway lol.
They rag on whatever random Sony title, or get smug over Kojima acting all Western-wannabe lol.

PS users only care about Japanese third-party titles — that's the only thing the earnings actually reflect.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This piece is an opinion column by IGN writer Matt Purslow, sparked directly by Insomniac Games’ new release ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ dropping below 80 on Metacritic — a score range widely considered a “disaster” for a AAA title by the industry’s own standards. The backdrop includes several years of news around Sony’s first-party studios: the early end of the competitive shooter ‘Concord,’ the dissolution of development studio PSYSINT, and the end of Sony’s partnership with Hideo Kojima. Where the thread splits is over whether this “bleak future” narrative squares with Sony’s own financial results, which look strong on paper. Some posters suggested that “domestic third-party software is what’s propping up the earnings,” but it’s worth flagging for readers that this is speculation within the thread, not a figure backed by the article or any official filings.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry / Geha) thread “[Bad News] IGN itself: “PlayStation’s future has never looked bleaker”.”

  • Pokaos Calls Out Keiji Channel by Name — 5ch: “Trash vs. Trash, Let Them Destroy Each Other”

On September 12, 2026, gaming YouTuber Pokaos called out Keiji Channel by name on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing him for “taking sponsored deals from Sony and gushing over PlayStation first-party titles as ‘masterpieces,’ only to turn around and start bashing them once the Kojima controversy hit and Sony’s fortunes soured” and for “inadequate PR/ad disclosure that amounts to stealth marketing.” The remarks became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board. Beyond debating whether the criticism itself was fair, posters were split on whether it’s legitimate for the anonymous Pokaos to attack the face-revealing Keiji, and on the broader issue of gaming YouTubers running “position-talk” (biased takes dressed up as neutral commentary) as a business model.

    Today's Pokaos:

"Keiji Channel is seriously trash. He took sponsored deals from Sony and went overboard calling PS first-party titles and third-party exclusives 'masterpieces' over and over — but the second the Kojima controversy hit or Sony started struggling, he jumped right in to bash them. And his PR/ad disclosures are so inadequate it's basically stealth marketing. This guy doesn't love PlayStation — he just loves the money and sponsorships PlayStation gives him."

"With Keiji Channel, whenever he criticizes (gives an opinion on) a game, he immediately praises like twice as many other things about it and goes full defense mode, lol. If that's how it's gonna go, I always think, just don't say the criticism in the first place.
    Keiji Channel… lol"

Background and Key Points of This Debate

As background, suspicion has often been raised within the gaming YouTuber scene about corporate sponsorship deals, inadequate PR/ad disclosure, and “position-talk” — creators who pose as neutral while effectively championing one particular platform. It’s in that context that Pokaos called out Keiji Channel by name, accusing him of stealth marketing and flip-flopping. What split the thread wasn’t so much the substance of the criticism itself, but whether someone who criticizes anonymously without showing their face has any credibility — pushback against using anonymity as a shield clashed with the counterargument that the content of the criticism should be judged on its own merits. Some posts claim both have clashed with other streamers before, but that’s just hearsay from 5ch, so its accuracy can’t be confirmed.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “Pokaos Goes All Out Bashing Keiji Channel.”

  • Child: “The Moment You Have Me, You’re Carrying a ¥20 Million Unrealized Loss” — Do You Really Need Kids, Minus the Sentiment?

On 5ch’s “Nanademo Jikkyo G” (roughly, “Whatever’s Live” board), a post comparing having a child to an investment — claiming “the moment you have a kid, you’re sitting on a ¥20 million unrealized loss” — sparked a heated debate. Opinions split between posters who calculated that investing that same amount would grow into tens of millions of yen by retirement, and those who countered that once you factor in child allowances and education subsidies, the real burden is much smaller. Then, in the second half of the thread, personal stories of parents who showered their kids with love sat alongside accounts of neglect and verbal abuse, and the conversation shifted from cost-benefit math into a clash of deeply personal views on whether to have children at all.

    1AnonymousSep 12, 2026 19:01

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Framing child-rearing costs around the “¥20 million” mark isn’t new in itself — it’s a figure often cited as a rough estimate of what it costs to raise and educate a child through university. What split opinion in this thread was the underlying premise: whether to treat that amount as an “opportunity cost” lost to investing, or to discount the real burden by factoring in support programs like the child allowance and education subsidies. Since investment-return estimates swing wildly depending on the assumed yield and time frame, the figures cited in different posts varied too, and no single number stands as the one correct answer. In the second half of the discussion, the conversation drifted away from economic rationality and into posters’ own memories of how they were raised. That shows factors which can’t be captured by cost-benefit math do shape real-life decisions, and the thread as a whole never settled into a single verdict, economic or emotional.

  • Sony’s PlayStation Monitor Sparks Controversy Over Bezel Shape Mismatch Between Ads and Real Product

Sony’s official monitor for PlayStation has come under fire from overseas users, who say the bezel (frame) shape looks different between the promotional images and the actual retail unit. On 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board, a thread debating this discrepancy has drawn mixed reactions. Some argue that “promo CG looking different from the real thing happens with every manufacturer,” while others are harsher, saying “even the corner curves looking like a totally different shape is just too much” and “this could actually turn into a lawsuit.” Some posters even shared actual product photos for comparison.

    Re: #95
Apparently every monitor maker does this,
    and it's not illegal.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Controversies over advertising for game console peripherals aren’t unusual — in the past, exaggerated spec claims around products like the VAIO and the PSP launch have drawn similar criticism. This time the trigger is that the bezel’s shape (corner roundness and thickness) looks different between the official promotional images for Sony’s PlayStation-branded monitor and the actual retail unit. Opinion in the thread split between defenders — “some difference between promotional CG and the real product is normal for any manufacturer” — and critics who said “having even the corner roundness look like a totally different shape goes too far,” with some posters later sharing actual photos for comparison. There were also comments noting that “every monitor maker does this and it’s not illegal,” so whether this actually rises to legal “false advertising” was never resolved within the thread — it’s worth noting this remains just opinion on 5ch, not a settled conclusion.

  • Giants’ Comeback Pennant “Confirmed”? 5ch Fires Back: “Tigers Still Have 4 More Games Left”

A thread titled “Giants’ Comeback Pennant Confirmed” popped up on 5ch’s live-commentary board — but at this point, the Tigers’ magic number for the pennant was still lit and hadn’t gone out. With the Tigers holding four more regular-season games remaining than the Giants, the thread split over how to properly calculate the real standings gap and how the head-to-head matchups would play out. Talk also heated up over MVP candidates, centered on Triple-Crown-paced Sato Teruaki and the continued strong pitching of Raidel Martinez.

I mean, if we're going there, the Giants are 7-2 in September while the Tigers are 2-5, you know?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

In Japanese pro baseball, a team’s “magic number” is the count of wins still needed against any opponent — even assuming a complete sweep of losses in the remaining head-to-head games against the chasing team — to clinch the pennant; winning a head-to-head game changes how fast that number falls. That’s why opinions split over whether it’s valid to simply divide the four-game gap in games remaining by two to convert it into a standings gap. Sato Teruaki currently leads the league in batting average, RBIs, and home runs, putting a Triple Crown within reach, but with the team not running away with the pennant despite those numbers, some posters pointed fingers at the manager’s handling of the club. There’s also the backdrop that former manager Abe’s contract runs only through this season with no successor named yet, which feeds into the ongoing debate over the acting-manager setup.

  • Chrono Trigger’s Time-Leap Storytelling Praised for Its Polish — 5ch: “The Craftsmanship Is Incredible”

A thread on the Nandemo Jikkyo G (Live Game Commentary) board about the 1995 RPG *Chrono Trigger* asked, “Isn’t it amazing how well-crafted this time-leap story was for that era?” The discussion quickly expanded into comparisons with Doraemon’s time-paradox episode, *The Girl Who Leapt Through Time*, and *Back to the Future*, before spiraling into a full-blown debate over the “true originator” of time-travel fiction — going all the way back to H.G. Wells’ *The Time Machine* and even Dickens’ *A Christmas Carol*. At the same time, some pushed back, arguing that *Final Fantasy V* and *Romancing SaGa 2* are more playable and enjoyable today, showing that opinions on Chrono Trigger itself were far from unanimous.

Background and key points of this discussion

Chrono Trigger was released in 1995 for the Super Famicom, and the thread’s praise centers on the fact that it paired a headline creative team — Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Hironobu Sakaguchi — with mechanics like multiple endings and New Game+ that were rare for the time, and the thread cites this as the reason for its reputation. Meanwhile, the hunt for the “true originator” of time-travel fiction never really settled: commenters brought up Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843), predating H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine (1895) by half a century, and opinions crossed back and forth. Opinions on the game itself were also split — some argued Final Fantasy V and Romancing SaGa 2 hold up better and are more fun today, while others defended Chrono Trigger for how far ahead of its time its craftsmanship was. One thing easy to misread here: the thread’s real point wasn’t that Chrono Trigger was the first time-travel work ever — it was surprise that a game from that era was built with that much care. The debate over who “started it all” was just a tangent that branched off from there.

    Re: #29
Even for landfill, you have to incinerate it first to shrink the volume.

There's hardly any land left in Osaka to build new waste facilities, and it's just not cost-effective.

    > I've heard that even Mayor Yokoyama was only informed at the last minute

There's no way that report didn't reach Mayor Yokoyama, who is also the administrator of the joint public body.
The Osaka Metropolitan Area Environmental Facilities Association was established in 2015 as a partial affairs association.
Osaka City, Yao City, Matsubara City, and Moriguchi City — all four have Ishin (Osaka Restoration Association) mayors.
Seven of the eight incineration plants are in Osaka City, the remaining one in Yao.
Way too unbalanced, and on top of that Moriguchi City has closed its own plant.
Ever since Mayor Hashimoto, all you can say is the planning has been way too naive.
    128AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:47
    Re: #112
They probably pushed things a bit too hard to cut administrative costs, as a talking-point achievement for Ishin.
On top of that, several unexpected setbacks piled up, and now things are genuinely stretched to the breaking point.
Guess it just shows that infrastructure needs some redundancy — costs that look wasteful at first glance but actually matter.
    116AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:44
At the very least, people should crush their PET bottles and aluminum cans flat to cut down on volume.
    125AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:46

Those don't go to the incinerator anyway, do they?
    141AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:50

    155AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:54
    Re: #141
According to the article, the amount of garbage hasn't actually increased.
Apparently it's the result of maintenance work and equipment breakdowns piling up together.

More urgently than that, Japan really needs to sort out the collection of swollen, damaged batteries nationwide before something goes seriously wrong.

Where I live, they collect it with a flatbed truck, so now you can put it out on glass-bottle collection day — that way, even if it explodes, the damage is minimized.

    196AnonymousSep 12, 2026 19:08
    Re: #178
It's not the administration's fault, it's a misjudgment by the citizens of Osaka Prefecture.
They pushed too hard for efficiency without allowing the administration any margin for slack.
They don't get that an administration with zero waste can't cope with even the slightest change.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The Osaka Metropolitan Area Environmental Facilities Association, which handles waste processing for Osaka City, was established in 2015 as a partial affairs association made up of Osaka City, Yao City, Matsubara City, and Moriguchi City. Of its eight incineration plants, seven are currently located within Osaka City, while Moriguchi City has already closed its own facility. In 2012, under then-Mayor Toru Hashimoto, the incineration plants were consolidated from nine down to six as part of administrative reforms, and many commenters pointed to this consolidation as an underlying cause of the current crunch. At the same time, data showing that “Osaka residents produce about 344g of household garbage per day, below the national average of 466g” also came up, lending weight to the view that the real problem isn’t a rise in garbage volume but a lack of spare capacity (redundancy) in the facilities. The pattern of prioritizing efficiency only to lose the ability to respond to unexpected situations is a theme that comes up across administrative cost-cutting in general.

TOSPO reports that with the Spanish GP race just two days away on the 13th, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso erupted in anger at Honda’s power unit (PU) during free practice on the 11th. After his radio message — “I can’t keep up with the other teams with this engine” — made the rounds, 5channel’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board lit up with comments like “Feels like a thread from ten years ago” and “Here we go again with the ‘GP2 engine’ line,” reviving memories of the McLaren-Honda era back in 2015. Others pointed out that the clutch trouble was actually down to Aston’s own transmission and not Honda’s fault, while some argued that in F1 the car matters more than the driver — opinions were split.

A lot of Honda engineers moved over to Red Bull (or more accurately, they just stayed put when Honda pulled its program).
Audi probably poached talented engineers from Mercedes, Honda, and even Renault — pretty impressive that they're running mid-pack right out of the gate.

Honda doesn't really treat F1 as a place to win — more like a training ground for junior engineers.
The lead engineers who were there until last year are probably long gone by now, so of course they can't compete. No wonder [Adrian] Newey is losing it too.

    It's actually the opposite —
Aston Martin is the one looking to switch to another manufacturer's engine next season, and it's Alonso who's smoothing things over by saying he'd rather stick with Honda.

Background and key points of this discussion

Honda ended its power unit supply to Red Bull after the 2021 season, then returned to F1 in 2026 as Aston Martin’s sole works partner. This isn’t the first time Alonso and Honda have clashed — during the McLaren-Honda era of 2015-2017, his radio complaint that it was a “GP2 engine” became infamous, and much of the thread’s reaction plays off that memory. Regarding this latest outburst, some posters pointed out that the clutch-related trouble stemmed from an issue with Aston Martin’s own transmission rather than Honda’s power unit itself, while others speculated that Honda is skipping major upgrades this season to focus its development resources on the new 2027 regulations — though it’s worth noting these are all thread speculation rather than official statements. Rumors are also circulating that Aston Martin will switch to a Mercedes power unit next season, but that remains unconfirmed.
