  • Mano Ohtsubo’s Christmas Outfit Goes Viral for the First Time — Fans Sympathize Over ‘Costume Gap’

A photo of Hello! Project idol Mano Ohtsubo in her Christmas costume spread across social media, earning her her first-ever “manbazu” (a post that racks up over 10,000 likes/retweets). What drove the spread wasn’t so much the quality of the outfit itself, but sympathy over how plain it looked next to other members’ costumes, plus talk of a “gap” in how much effort or budget goes into each member’s outfit. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, reactions ranged from words of encouragement for her and complaints aimed at the agency, to worries about her going viral for a negative reason, and even mockery of the sympathy narrative itself.

That just makes it sadder, honestly

    59AnonymousSep 14, 2026 19:50
Since she was kind of getting buried among the new members, there was a stretch where the BEYOOOOONDS senpai were being considerate and writing about Mano a ton on their blogs

Plain at a glance, but look closely and it's actually pretty striking

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In Hello! Project, fans have long pointed out that when trainees get promoted to full members, they tend to get fewer costume and exposure opportunities compared to more senior members in the group — and the word “gap” gets used in that context. This particular manbazu spread less because of the photo’s quality and more because of the sympathetic take that “maybe different members just get different amounts of budget spent on their costumes.” Where the thread split was over whether to simply welcome this wave of sympathy, or to see it as “going viral for a negative reason doesn’t actually help her” — what the agency’s actual intentions were remains pure speculation within the thread, never confirmed either way. It’s also easy to misread the term “manbazu” itself: it’s just slang for when retweets or likes top 10,000 on social media, and doesn’t necessarily mean the reaction was a positive one.

  • Kickboxing Returns to Japanese Terrestrial TV After 16 Years — 5ch: “Watched the Famous ‘Vacuum Flying Knee’ Again After All This Time, Turns Out It Never Actually Landed”

TV Tokyo announced on September 14 that it will broadcast the third “GOAT” kickboxing festival event live nationwide from Tennozu Studio in Tokyo on October 25. The card includes three bouts, among them a title match between ISKA World Super Featherweight Champion Ryusei and Rodrigo Bogado, marking Japan’s first terrestrial kickboxing broadcast in roughly 16 years, since 2010. On 5ch, ironic jabs about TV Tokyo’s abrupt cancellation of its pro baseball night-game broadcast in late August mixed with nostalgic reminiscing about the old kickboxing boom epitomized by Tadashi Sawamura’s “vacuum flying knee,” and the discussion spread into a debate over the ratings battle with baseball and soccer.

Three bouts announced, including Ryusei vs. Rodrigo Bogado

The kickboxing festival “GOAT” held a press conference in Tokyo on the 14th, announcing that its third event will take place on October 25 at TV Tokyo’s Tennozu Studio. Three bouts were confirmed, including a title match between ISKA K-1 Rules World Super Featherweight Champion Ryusei (25, BRAID/TEAM SUERTE) and Rodrigo Bogado (26, Argentina). A live broadcast across the TV Tokyo network was also announced — the first live terrestrial kickboxing broadcast in Japan in about 16 years, since 2010.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japanese kickboxing was once a massively popular Showa-era phenomenon, with TBS’s “Kickboxing Broadcast” pulling in huge ratings, but terrestrial broadcasts had been absent since 2010. The thread’s talk of Tadashi Sawamura’s “vacuum flying knee” touches on a long-standing claim — that the knee never actually made contact and the move was essentially staged — an anecdote that has repeatedly resurfaced as a point of skepticism about the overheated media coverage of that era, and it came up again in this thread. Meanwhile, TV Tokyo abruptly canceled its professional baseball night-game broadcast in August 2026, and posters connected that cancellation to the new kickboxing broadcast, with many comments mocking what looked like terrestrial TV turning its back on baseball in favor of a minor sport. That said, this isn’t simply a ratings-driven programming swap — TV Tokyo has its own long track record of investing in combat-sports broadcasts, so the simple “dropped baseball for kickboxing” narrative deserves some caution. The thread’s questions also reflect the reality that Japan’s kickboxing scene today has a proliferation of competing promotions, meaning well-known fighters don’t necessarily all end up on the same card.

  • “Jiga-chan” Posts on VIP Board Seeking X Followers — Original Songs and Art Spark a Reaction

On 5ch’s “Nnews VIP” board, a poster who calls themselves “Jiga-chan” revealed their X (Twitter) account and started a thread calling out, “Anyone want to connect?” The poster shared original music within the thread and also pointed to a separate account where they post artwork, trading messages with other posters about their age and creative process. They say they usually draw digitally, but plan to try an analog collage piece for a December exhibition. Some commenters, however, questioned whether the account was really genuine and whether it was okay to follow without asking, sparking a side discussion about how to treat a self-introduction that originates on an anonymous message board.

    Background and Talking Points

Threads like this pop up regularly on the VIP board — a genre where someone identifies themselves and asks for social media followers — and there’s no way to verify authenticity beyond the poster’s own word. Details like age, occupation, and working style are all based purely on the poster’s own statements, with no third-party confirmation available. Some commenters in the thread voiced doubts, asking “Is this really them?” and “Is it okay to just follow without asking?”, making the question of how much distance to keep from a self-introduction that started on an anonymous board a loose but recurring theme. Aside from that, the actual back-and-forth — reactions to the original songs, talk about art style, plans for the December exhibition — stayed friendly small talk throughout, with no sign of backlash or conflict. Readers should keep in mind that posts like this are ultimately just self-reported claims on an anonymous board, and neither the linked account’s authenticity nor its connection to the thread’s original poster has been officially confirmed.

  • Survey: Teens’ Hometown Pride Ranking — Hokkaido Tops List at 98.1%; 5ch Reacts: ‘I Don’t Want to Fit Into Such a Small Box’

A nationwide survey of 2,533 teens aged 13 to 19, conducted by Japan Information Co., has revealed how many young people say they “love” their hometown. The overall average came out to 80.3%, with Hokkaido topping the prefectural rankings at 98.1%, followed by Aichi and Osaka tied for second at 94.3%. On 5ch, the results sparked a lively discussion about why Kanto-area prefectures like Saitama and Ibaraki tend to score lower, and whether strong hometown pride goes hand in hand with being exclusionary — with posters chiming in with their own regional experiences and self-deprecating jokes about their home prefectures.

Japan Information Co. conducted a “Prefecture-by-Prefecture Teen Ranking Survey,” polling 2,533 people aged 13 to 19 nationwide on their attachment to their hometown, their social media habits, and their purchasing behavior.

◼ Hokkaido tops “love my hometown” at 98.1%, followed by Aichi and Osaka

First, 80.3% of respondents overall said they “really love” or “somewhat love” their hometown. By prefecture, Hokkaido came out highest at 98.1%, with Aichi and Osaka tied for second at 94.3%.

By that logic Saga and Fukui should rank the same way. Aomori and Fukushima aren't low just because of the nuclear plants — it's because they're deeply rural and people there have a strong urge to escape to Tokyo.

That's because it covers the basics — food, clothing, shelter — just fine. Even with only a high school diploma you can work at a major company for decent pay all the way to retirement. You can get married, have two kids, own a house, and have two cars. As for entertainment and culture in Aichi, though — top domestic bands playing live houses, major events every week, overseas orchestra concerts every week — that's… kind of a stretch.

    Background and Key Points

This survey was conducted by Japan Information Co. among 2,533 teens aged 13 to 19. The figures confirmed in the source article are an overall average of 80.3% for “love my hometown,” with Hokkaido at 98.1%, Aichi and Osaka at 94.3%, Kanagawa at 92.6%, and Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hyogo at 90.7% — the article’s text doesn’t specify which prefecture ranked last. One thread post claimed Aomori came in last, but that’s just a poster’s guess and isn’t backed up by the source image or link, so it shouldn’t be taken as fact.

Where the thread’s opinions diverged was over what explains the strength of hometown pride. Some argued that Hokkaido, Aichi, and Osaka are economically self-sufficient, which breeds stronger attachment, while others pointed out that Saitama and Ibaraki tend to score relatively lower simply because major metropolises sit nearby. A claim also surfaced that “the stronger the hometown pride, the more exclusionary the place” — but this too is just an unverified impression and shouldn’t be taken at face value.

  • Job-Hunting NEET Thread Spirals Into a Gender War — 5ch: ‘Bottom of the Barrel, But Still a Woman’

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, started by a 27-year-old NEET with bipolar disorder who wrote that he’d be heading to the unemployment office (Hello Work) the day after tomorrow. Early replies focused on practical advice — job training programs, job-hunting tips — but the conversation gradually morphed into a heated debate over the gender gap, with claims like “women don’t struggle to find jobs or relationships even with an employment gap.” Late in the thread, a regular poster going by the handle “Kasanobon,” who claimed to earn 15 million yen a year, barged in — and when pressed for proof of income, the screenshot he posted only deepened doubts about whether he was telling the truth.

Speaking as someone with a Level 2 bookkeeping certification (boki, a common Japanese accounting qualification), what's shown in Re: #163 is "revenue" — annual sales — not actual income.

Profit margins vary by industry, but with 10 million yen in annual revenue, what you actually take home could be about the same as a regular company employee, or even less.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “job training gets you 100,000 yen a month” system mentioned in the thread refers to Japan’s Vocational Training Benefit. It comes with eligibility requirements tied to household income and assets, so simply living alone doesn’t automatically qualify you for the payment. Separately, when a poster claimed a 15-million-yen annual income late in the thread, another user holding a Level 2 bookkeeping certification pointed out that the figure shown was “revenue” rather than actual income, and that take-home pay in some industries can be little different from that of an ordinary company employee — a useful lens for judging the truth of this kind of “income bragging.” Another notable feature of the thread was that opinions on whether men and women face different levels of difficulty in job hunting and dating never quite reconciled, with the debate running to the end without reaching any real conclusion.

  • Setagaya Ward considers expanding minpaku operating days to 180 — easing rules for compliant hosts who live on-site

Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward has drawn up a proposed ordinance amendment aimed at easing regulations on minpaku (private home-stay lodging). Under the plan, “compliant operators” who meet certain conditions — such as having the host live on-site — would see their annual cap on operating days raised from 120 to 180. While wards like Shinjuku have been moving to tighten regulations in response to minpaku-related trouble around Tokyo, Setagaya is steering in the opposite direction. On 5channel threads, comments included “Why are wards taking such different approaches?” and “Could this also be about tackling the vacant-house problem?”, with opinions split over the ward’s reportedly high number of vacant homes and the potential impact on land prices.

Amid a string of minpaku-related troubles and a move toward tighter regulation across Tokyo, Setagaya Ward has drawn up a proposed ordinance amendment that would ease restrictions under certain conditions.

"I don't want to pay the taxes" — that one line would've covered it, but they dragged it out into a whole article.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Under Japan’s Private Lodging Business Act, minpaku operators face a statutory cap of 180 operating days per year, and Setagaya Ward’s proposed amendment would raise the limit up to that legal ceiling — meaning the easing stays within the bounds of existing law. By contrast, Osaka’s “special zone minpaku” operate under a separate legal framework with no such day-count limit at all, and the comparisons drawn in the thread between the Shinjuku and Osaka cases got tangled and are worth untangling. Setagaya has been reported to have a notably high vacancy rate, and some see the deregulation as partly aimed at putting empty homes to use, though this is not something the ward has officially confirmed. The thread also included posts speculating about the mayor’s political leanings and about residents of particular nationalities; these are unsubstantiated guesses and shouldn’t be taken at face value.

  • Box Office Rankings: ‘Chiikawa’ Holds No. 1 for Second Straight Week — Even Without Bonus Freebies

In the national box office rankings for September 11–13, “Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island” held on to the No. 1 spot for a second straight week. Many were surprised it kept the top spot even in a week with no admission bonus items being handed out, while the newly opened “Look Back” didn’t climb as high as expected, prompting comparisons with the original manga and its earlier anime film. The other new release, “The Odyssey,” topped Chiikawa in average ticket price and has been taking the No. 1 spot in country after country overseas — including the U.S. and U.K. — yet still couldn’t beat Chiikawa in Japan, which also became a talking point.

    September 14, 2026

The Top 10 national box office rankings for September 11–13 were released by Kogyo Tsushinsha, with “Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island” topping the chart for a second consecutive week.

It'll have to make its money on opening Friday
If the content turns out bad, that'll be the end of it

    Background and Key Points

The box office rankings are compiled by Kogyo Tsushinsha over a three-day Friday-to-Sunday window, and attendance (number of ticket-buyers) and box office revenue (yen amount) are two separate metrics. That distinction is what caught the thread’s attention: even in a week with no bonus items, “Chiikawa the Movie” held on to the No. 1 spot in attendance, while “The Odyssey,” which has a higher average ticket price, occasionally came out ahead in revenue despite trailing in attendance. The Japanese title for that film appears to stay faithful to the original title while avoiding confusion with “Odyssey,” the 2015 film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon that was also released in Japan under that name. Also notable: while “The Odyssey” topped the charts in many countries overseas, including the U.S. and U.K., “Chiikawa the Movie” was the only one to beat it in Japan — taken by some as a sign of just how strong homegrown character-content popularity is domestically. Meanwhile, the newly opened “Look Back” didn’t climb as high in the rankings as expected beforehand, sparking mixed opinions in comparisons with the original manga and its earlier anime film adaptation.

  • Matsuko Says She’s Team Single-Ply Toilet Paper, and Her Reason Is Crystal Clear: “Double-Ply Just Doesn’t Feel Like You’ve Wiped”

During a live appearance on “5-ji ni Muchuu!”, Matsuko Deluxe declared herself firmly “Team Single-Ply” when it comes to toilet paper, explaining, “I don’t buy the expensive stuff — I buy the cheapest one there is.” The remark sparked a 5channel thread where opinions split over which is more economical and easier to wipe with, single-ply or double-ply. Some argued that if you fold it up, there’s no real difference either way; others insisted single-ply makes it easier to control how much you use and cuts down on waste, while still others countered that without double-ply, it just doesn’t feel like you’ve properly wiped. The discussion even branched into claims of a regional divide, with single-ply reportedly selling better in western Japan and double-ply in eastern Japan.

    9/14 (Mon) 18:04

Matsuko Deluxe appeared live on TOKYO MX’s “5-ji ni Muchuu!” (weekdays at 5pm) on the 14th as the Monday commentator, and revealed that she’s on Team Single-Ply for toilet paper.

The show got lively over the topic of toilet paper. Matsuko insisted, “Me, I’m single-ply. Definitely single-ply,” before adding, “I don’t buy the expensive stuff either — I buy the cheapest one.”

No way I could go without a bidet

    Background and Talking Points

The single-ply vs. double-ply preference isn’t just a matter of individual taste — it’s often discussed as a divide shaped by region and generation. In the thread, too, opinions clashed between those who prioritize the “feeling of having actually wiped” and those who value the economy of using less paper, and no clear consensus emerged on which is “correct.” Some pointed out that, depending on how you fold it, usage ends up about the same either way, suggesting the issue can’t really be reduced to a simple either/or. Worth noting: the actual thread also contained plenty of posts poking fun at Matsuko’s body type and bathroom habits, but since that’s separate from the practical discussion of choosing toilet paper that sparked the topic, it’s been left out of this article.

It was announced on the 14th that “Chiikawa the Movie: The Mermaid Island Secret,” currently a smash hit, will hand out a 52-page “Secret Book” as its 5th admission bonus starting on the 19th, the first day of Silver Week. The booklet reportedly includes story illustrations that original creator Nagano drew while conceiving the “Siren arc,” letting readers see early concept details that had previously only been described in a long-form interview on the official website. On 5ch, reactions were largely upbeat — “I absolutely need this,” “how lavish” — but the thread also buzzed with gripes about the repeated bonus-item marketing, the film’s box-office numbers, and sold-out theater merchandise, so the excitement wasn’t limited to the bonus content alone.

The “Secret Book” bonus is a hefty limited-edition booklet running a full 52 pages. It includes the “story illustrations” that original creator and illustrator Nagano drew back when conceiving the “Siren arc,” offering a rare look at early concept art — material previously only described in a long-form interview on the official website, which revealed details such as “a character called ‘that girl’ was placed where the siren would have been” and “Hitoha and Futaba originally had faces and lines.”

Isn't it more like a metaphor for people going to see it just because the trend's being controlled, with no will of their own?

    Background and Talking Points

Handing out admission bonuses in staggered waves is a box-office strategy that’s become standard for recent hit anime films like Demon Slayer, meant to encourage repeat viewings and boost box-office revenue. Worth noting: the “14.6 billion yen” figure that came up in the thread was an unconfirmed estimate circulating on 5ch, not an officially released number. Opinions in the thread split into two camps — those welcoming this kind of bonus-item marketing as fan service, and those wary of a business model that seems to bank on scalping and repeat viewings. Some pointed out that since this “Secret Book” comes in only one version with no lottery element, there’s little upside for scalpers. Meanwhile, the complaints about sold-out theater merchandise are really about the timing of bonus distribution and how individual stores manage inventory — a different issue from criticism of the source material or the bonus campaign itself, a nuance that’s easy to miss from the article alone.

  • Former TBS Announcer Reveals Her ICL Eye Surgery Experience: ‘Done in 10 Minutes,’ ‘Cost About ¥700,000’

Former TBS announcer Risa Uchi revealed on X that she underwent ICL (implantable contact lens) surgery to correct her nearsightedness. She shared specific figures: her vision improved from 1.2–1.5 with contacts to about 2.0 after surgery, the procedure took 10 minutes, and it cost roughly ¥700,000.

On 5ch, commenters discussed how close the procedure is to cataract surgery, how it differs from LASIK, the classic jab that “ophthalmologists never get it done themselves and just wear glasses,” and whether it can still be adjusted once presbyopia sets in.

    Nikkan Sports [September 14, 2026, 8:55 AM]

Former TBS announcer Risa Uchi (34) updated her X account by the 14th, revealing that she had undergone ICL surgery to have a lens implanted in her eye.

On the 12th, she posted a recent photo with the caption, “Had my ICL surgery exactly a week ago, and I’m back at work today… recovery’s going smoothly… and the world looks so clear.” In a follow-up post she added, “Since a lot of people seem interested in ICL, here’s a quick rundown: Vision went from 1.2–1.5 with contacts to about 2.0 after surgery. I’m extremely nearsighted, so ICL was basically my only option. It doesn’t hurt (though you do feel a pressing sensation on your eye). The surgery itself was over in 10 minutes. Cost was about ¥700,000. Can’t wash my face for 3 days, plus I have to use three kinds of eye drops every 2 hours while I’m awake. From day 4 on, baths and makeup are fine (except eye makeup). Eye makeup’s okay after a week. I got rid of my glasses and contacts. For choosing a hospital, I went mainly off recommendations from people I know — the doctor holds an Expert Instructor certification, something only about a dozen doctors in all of Japan have.”

    Every ophthalmologist just wears glasses
They won't get LASIK or a lens implant done
    themselves

But they do get cataract surgery, right? That's also a procedure where they remove the lens and swap in a new one.

I had both nearsightedness and astigmatism, but it started improving around age 30, and by 35 I only needed a nearsighted-only lens.

ICL can be taken back out,
    since nothing gets shaved away.
    12AnonymousSep 14, 2026 18:16
If you're going to get ICL, the younger the better — once you're older you'll get presbyopia anyway.
    14AnonymousSep 14, 2026 18:17
Cataract surgery shaves away the clouded lens and puts a new one in its place.
ICL just adds a lens without removing anything.
So ICL is probably the easier procedure surgically.
Cataract surgery basically never fails, so there's plenty of track record behind it.

I genuinely don't get how just having that printed on there makes it "lame" lol
    33AnonymousSep 14, 2026 18:20
It's basically the same as cataract → intraocular lens surgery, so there's no real risk, but
even with multifocal lenses, after a few years your near vision
can start to go again and you might end up needing reading glasses — worth keeping in mind.

    101AnonymousSep 14, 2026 18:38
    Re: #97
There are multifocal intraocular lenses too though.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Unlike LASIK, which shaves down the cornea, ICL surgery works by inserting an extra lens inside the eye — and as commenters noted, one key difference is that it can be removed later if needed. The procedure has gained ground in recent years as an option for people with severe nearsightedness who don’t qualify for LASIK, and the roughly ¥700,000 price mentioned in the thread lines up with typical market rates. While the classic jab that “ophthalmologists never get refractive surgery done themselves and just wear glasses” made another appearance, others pushed back by pointing to its technical similarity to cataract surgery (removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a new one), arguing its track record speaks for itself. One easily overlooked point: even after surgery brings vision up to 2.0, the eye’s focusing ability itself doesn’t improve, so close-up vision can still worsen with age, and how well the procedure holds up against presbyopia remains a question. The specific numbers on success rates and blindness cases floating around the thread are unsourced anecdotes at best, so they shouldn’t be taken at face value.
