  • Medical Institution Bankruptcies Hit Record 59 in First Nine Months of 2026 — 5ch: ‘Dentists Earn ¥15 Million a Year, Yet Still Caught in the Bankruptcy Rush’

A survey by Tokyo Shoko Research found that 59 “medical institutions” went bankrupt in Japan between January and September 2026, a record high since comparable data collection began in 2008. The decline is said to be especially visible among everyday clinics and dental practices. On 5ch, posters pointed to a growing number of doctors turning to non-insurance (out-of-pocket) treatments because insurance-covered care alone isn’t profitable, and criticized the twisted system in which medical supplies are subject to consumption tax but that cost isn’t reflected in reimbursement rates. Others fired back with harsher takes like “it’s fine if there are fewer medical institutions” and “elderly healthcare spending should be cut,” making for a divided thread.

Even if the clinic goes under, it's not like your medical license gets revoked.
With that in hand, you can make a living no matter what.

    Dentistry's rough, isn't it?
Clinic-type doctors can always fall back on becoming a salaried physician at a big hospital, but dentists don't really have that option.

Wasn't the prediction that in 10 years we'd need about twice as many healthcare workers as we do now?

They're needed, but a lot of places barely turn a profit on insurance-covered care, where you can't set your own prices.
There's definitely been a shift toward dentistry and cosmetic surgery, fields where doctors can set their own fees through out-of-pocket treatment and earn comparatively more.
    20AnonymousOct 18, 2026 11:16
A situation with lots of profitable hospitals just means the health insurance system's finances are under that much more strain.
    That's actually good news.

The government's squeeze has been brutal — 30% of hospitals and clinics have now fallen into the red.
Medical supplies get hit with consumption tax, but reimbursement fees are barred from passing that tax on.
Inflation drives up supply costs, yet reimbursement fees see small-to-large cuts.
Inflation pushes up labor costs too (etc.)
They mandate compliance with the My Number national ID system, but the cost of implementing and maintaining it
    isn't reflected in reimbursement fees.

If you keep on living, you're guaranteed to become elderly eventually, so cutting elderly healthcare spending now is the same as cutting your own future healthcare spending.

Depends on how you run it. Setting aside location, rent, and all that —

if you do it properly and seriously, opening your own practice probably nets you around ¥8 million take-home? That's a pretty rough estimate.
Build it around a bigger staff and run it staff-first, and it's ¥20 million.
Exploit every loophole in the insurance system to the max, and it's ¥50 million-plus.

Tuition is flat or dropping, but it costs about twice as much to open a practice as it did 20 years ago.

Still, I don't think it's changed that dentistry is a job you can get into even starting from mediocre grades, and still earn a stable, respectable income.
I used to grind it out doing out-of-pocket treatment, but lately I'm tired and prioritizing my personal life, so I hired a salaried associate and now run mostly insurance care for about ¥8 million.

The countryside might actually pay better relative to the effort.

Running a clinic sounds like boring-as-hell work anyway.
And ending up at a backwater hospital as a salaried doctor is just the result of your own ability and choices.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s medical reimbursement fees are government-set prices that medical institutions cannot choose to raise, while at the same time, purchasing medical supplies is subject to consumption tax — creating an asymmetric structure where rising supply and labor costs from inflation are hard to pass through into prices. Smaller clinics and dental practices tend to feel the profit squeeze more acutely, and businesses centered on insurance-covered care are said to be especially hard-pressed. At the same time, many thread posters pointed out just how high dentists’ incomes can run, showing the industry isn’t uniformly struggling — the gap, driven by factors like out-of-pocket treatment and running multiple practices, can be wide, something hard to see from the main article alone. The rise in bankruptcies is also thought to be linked to hospital bed reductions and doctors concentrating in urban areas and non-insurance treatment, though the thread didn’t dig much into the impact on regional healthcare access.

  • Is Switching Favorites Within the Same Idol Group Taboo? 5ch Weighs In

On a 5ch thread about Hello! Project idols, fans debated whether switching your favorite member (“oshi”) to someone else within the same group — known as “in-group oshi-hen” — counts as a taboo move. The thread starter opened with, “Switching out of pity just drags things out and makes everything messier,” sparking a clash between those who say you should only switch favorites after your current one graduates and those who argue that who you support is entirely a matter of personal choice. Switching because a member was extra nice to you one-on-one got dismissed by some as “creepy,” while opinions were also split on keeping a backup favorite in anticipation of your main pick’s eventual graduation — highlighting just how differently fans read the same situation.

Switching your favorite within the group out of pity just drags things out and makes everything messier.
If you've switched with real conviction, fine, but switching out of pity feels disrespectful to the idol herself, I've come to think.
Apparently, from the idol's side, an in-group oshi-hen feels like "my boyfriend broke up with me and started dating my little sister" — genuinely gross and unbearable, or so I hear.

In-group favorite switching should wait until after graduation.

What do you mean by that?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The clash of values around “oshi-hen” (switching your favorite idol) is a theme long debated in idol fan circles, and this thread is just the latest chapter. Underlying it is a shared psychology on both sides — fans and idols alike — that switching favorites within the very same group tends to feel like “cheating” or “betrayal.” The thread split mainly on two points: where to draw the line (acceptable after graduation versus not), and how to judge the reasons and frequency behind a switch (if a little one-on-one kindness is enough to make you move on, your commitment was shallow to begin with). That said, a fair number of commenters argued that “who you support is entirely a matter of personal freedom” — worth noting that the stricter norms voiced here reflect the values of one segment of 5ch fans, not a consensus among all fans. The idol-side comments and anecdotes mentioned by name are also just secondhand accounts from fans, not confirmed statements that accurately reflect the idols’ own intentions.

  • UTokyo Admits: Tokyo Alone Makes Up 40%, Kanto’s Six Prefectures Over 60% — 5ch: “Nobody Dreams of Tokyo Anymore”

A tally by the location of admitted students’ high schools, published by the University of Tokyo, shows that out of 2,990 successful applicants in the 2026 general admissions round, Tokyo alone accounted for 1,102 (37%), while the six prefectures of the Kanto region including Tokyo accounted for a combined 1,851 (about 62%). Tohoku, Hokkaido, and Shikoku together don’t even reach 5%. Opinions on the thread were split between those who see this as a natural outcome given the Tokyo metro area’s population and commuting convenience, and those who point to the concentration of exam-prep infrastructure — integrated middle-high schools and cram schools like Tetsuryokukai — as widening the gap with the regions. Also drawing attention was the fact that the share of Kanto-born students is rising even at regional former Imperial universities.

The University of Tokyo published, in its 2027 school guide, the breakdown by prefecture of high school location for the 2,990 successful applicants in the 2026 general admissions round. Tokyo and the greater Kanto region accounted for roughly 60%, demonstrating a clear regional advantage.

Tokyo alone, despite being a single prefecture, produced 1,102 admits (37%) — nearly 40% of the total — showing an overwhelming presence. Next came the six Kanto prefectures excluding Tokyo, with 749. Combined with Tokyo, that reached 1,851, or about 62% of all successful applicants.

The test is tuned so that scoring a bit over half is enough to pass, so if you're good at math it becomes a strength beyond its point allocation. The same goes for other subjects — if you're way ahead in just one, passing gets easy.

And since they've all walked the same track, homogeneity is high too. No way they can compete with today's famous universities abroad, where diversity, stimulation, and the chemical reactions between different cultures feed real strength.

    Re: #199
Nishiyamato actually sends twice as many students to UTokyo as Koyo does, you know.

    Background and Talking Points

The “School Guide” that the University of Tokyo publishes every year tallies admitted students by the location of their high school — not by where the student is actually from. Many students at Tokyo’s integrated middle-high schools (Kaisei, Azabu, Ouin, Tsukukoma, etc.) actually come from other regions, so a tally by school location doesn’t simply equate to the share of “local-born” admits. The thread split between those who see this skew as reasonable given population ratios and commuting conditions, and those who argue that the concentration of Tokyo’s exam-prep industry — from SAPIX through to Tetsuryokukai — is what’s widening the opportunity gap. Also drawing attention was the point that at Tohoku University and Hokkaido University too, the share of Kanto-born students has risen to the point of outnumbering local-born students, suggesting this isn’t a phenomenon unique to UTokyo but a structural shift spreading across the former Imperial universities as a whole — an easily overlooked point.

  • Kazuki Kameda’s World Title Fight Canceled on Fight Day — Figueroa, Already Stripped of Belt, Pulls Out Citing Illness

The WBA featherweight world title match scheduled for the 17th (18th Japan time) in Las Vegas was called off on the very morning of the fight. Opponent Brandon Figueroa had already been stripped of the title after failing to make the featherweight limit at the previous day’s weigh-in, and then pulled out on fight day itself citing poor health. On 5ch, sympathy for Kazuki Kameda — who had properly prepared his body for the bout — mixed with questions about how lenient the punishment for missing weight was, while talk also turned to what happens to the vacant title and the chances of a future bout with Naoya Inoue.

Pro boxing’s TMK Gym revealed in the early hours of the 18th (Japan time) that the WBA featherweight world title match Kazuki Kameda (35, TMK) had been set to fight in Las Vegas on the 17th (18th Japan time),

was called off on the morning of the fight itself, after the promoter notified them that opponent Brandon Figueroa (USA) had pulled out due to poor health.

Figueroa had failed to make the featherweight limit (57.1kg or under) twice at the previous day’s weigh-in held on the 16th local time (17th Japan time), and had already been stripped of the title for coming in over weight.

Best-case route for Kazuki from here:
Win an eliminator against Nakano or Mirco
Defend as champion against Naoya Inoue, fresh off beating Bam
Put up a good fight but lose by wide decision
    Retire

    That's probably the best-case scenario
Though since Inoue has other options like Leo or Carrington, he might just avoid the Kameda family altogether since he's said to dislike them

Knowing the WBA, they'll probably stick Kameda with some meaningless "Interim" or "Gold" belt nobody understands, and force the real title fight to be Inoue vs. Figueroa instead
    79AnonymousOct 18, 2026 10:59
It's the WBA, so they're definitely going to steer this toward an Inoue eliminator
    105AnonymousOct 18, 2026 11:11
    Re: #79
Setting aside that the opponent is Kameda, this is actually a pretty great path for Inoue too
Going straight for a featherweight title would be risky without a tune-up fight, but financially he can't just fight some unknown contender
An eliminator against Kameda — who's power-less and otherwise just contender-level — fits that gap perfectly

Though the backlash over it being specifically Kameda is probably too loud for this to ever actually happen

Guess the penalties are pretty lax after all

    Re: #100
If it meant losing the whole purse, he probably would've cut weight like his life depended on it

Background and Key Points of This Story

In boxing, missing weight at the previous day’s weigh-in automatically strips a fighter of their title, but in many cases the fight itself still goes ahead once the weight overage is acknowledged. This time, on top of losing the title, the fighter also pulled out on the day of the bout itself — an unusual turn of events — and the thread saw surprise at how lenient the punishment was, since only a portion of the purse goes to the opponent’s side rather than a full forfeiture. Whether Kameda will simply be awarded the vacant title, or whether the WBA will instead arrange an eliminator aimed at setting up a fight with Naoya Inoue, is not confirmed in the article. It’s also worth noting that the “Inoue vs. Kameda” matchup floated in the thread is purely speculation from posters, not an announced fact.

  • “Just Buy Any Bread, I Don’t Care Which” — New Hire Got Yelled At Anyway, Story Strikes a Nerve

A company CEO looked back on his rookie days in an X (formerly Twitter)-style post: “As a new hire, an executive told me, ‘Just buy any bread, I don’t care which,’ so I bought exactly what was asked — and got yelled at anyway. I get it now.” The story drew reactions from 5ch users. The thread buzzed with theories about which bread he actually bought and what made it the “wrong” choice, with some sympathizing (“getting mad after saying ‘anything’s fine’ is unreasonable”) and others taking a harsher line (“a new hire should at least ask about preferences”). In the end, not even the poster revealed what the “correct” bread would have been — and that unresolved mystery became the biggest point of debate.

The person making the request should just say so themselves — subordinates aren't slaves

    Background and Key Talking Points

The scenario of being told “just buy whatever, I don’t care” — then getting scolded anyway for picking something totally reasonable — is a recurring workplace-friction story on 5ch, and this is just the latest version. The thread buzzed with competing theories — Team Savory Bread, Team Sandwich, Team Domestic-Wheat Bread — but neither the original poster nor anyone else in the thread ever confirmed what the “correct” choice actually was. That’s really the point: this isn’t a puzzle with a hidden answer, it’s about how “anything’s fine” quietly demands that the other person read their preferences and the situation correctly, while giving a new hire no real clues to go on. Plenty of commenters argued the person making the request should just state their actual conditions — though others pushed back with “reading the room is part of the job,” too. Which side feels right probably depends on your own experience of office life.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Company president: “As a new hire, an executive told me to just buy any bread, I don’t care which — I bought this bread and got yelled at. I get it now.”“

    Re: #54
They probably did learn — that's exactly why they canceled and refunded instead of forcing it through this time

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Hello! Project shows are often recorded well before they air, so comments made at taping can end up colliding with later real-world events. In this case, Okamura Minami’s remark — wondering whether they’d actually make it to opening night — ended up overlapping with the play’s real cancellation. The thread split mainly over the understudy issue: some questioned whether the production was under-prepared, pointing to the possibility of trainee stand-ins or the team-based system used in past trainee productions, while others defended the decision, arguing there simply wasn’t the budget to arrange understudies or double-casting. There was also a gap in perspective around the refunds — while ticket money was returned, that didn’t cover out-of-pocket costs like travel expenses or the hassle of rearranging schedules for fans who’d planned trips, creating friction with the view that “it’s fine since they already refunded it.”

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread: “[Sad News] Okamura Minami: “At the time of recording we’re still rehearsing, but the day before this airs is opening night, and I’m nervous about whether we’ll actually get there safely!”“

  • Mr. Marick’s ‘Hand Power’ Trick Exposed by Hidden Camera

Hidden camera footage has once again confirmed that Mr. Marick’s signature “Hand Power” was in fact a sleight-of-hand trick, sparking discussion on 5ch. Marick shot to massive fame after a 1988 TV appearance, but around 1991 the tide turned and he faced fierce backlash as a “fake psychic.” The thread mixed surprise at the trick’s mechanics with lengthy posts recounting the media backlash of that era, touching on both his skill and how people view the old controversy.

    14AnonymousOct 18, 2026 07:38
    Background on the backlash

    • The boom takes off: He debuted in 1988 on shows like Nippon TV's '11PM,' sending all of Japan into a frenzy with catchphrases like "It's coming!" and "Hand Power," paired with mysterious magic he called "super magic."

    • The media turns on him: The same press that once praised him flipped around 1991, branding him a "fake psychic" and airing special segments like "Condemned! Mr. Marick," until public opinion was uniformly hostile.

    • Toll on body and mind: Extreme stress and pressure triggered facial paralysis caused by a nerve deep in his ear, and he reportedly went through a period close to vanishing or fleeing in the night.

    • A misunderstood stance: Marick himself later explained he was always performing as entertainment (magic/"super magic") and was never claiming to have real psychic powers.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Mr. Marick rose to massive popularity in 1988 through appearances on shows like ’11PM,’ captivating audiences with the catchphrases “It’s coming!” and “Hand Power.” But around 1991, media coverage flipped entirely, with special programs airing to condemn him as a “fake psychic” — a backlash so intense it reportedly took a toll on his body and mind, including facial paralysis brought on by extreme stress. He later explained that he had always been performing magic and “super magic,” never claiming to have genuine psychic powers, and this thread repeatedly made that same point. Opinions in the thread were split between praise — “if you can’t spot it on first viewing, the magician wins” — and skepticism toward just how overheated the backlash was at the time, with both views coexisting rather than one side winning out.

  • Hololive’s Laplus Warns Fans — Her ‘Male’ Nickname Sparks Debate

Hololive VTuber Laplus Darkness has stirred up discussion on 5channel after issuing a warning directed at users of the “Nanjer” (何でも実況G, a 5ch sports/variety discussion board) community. She reportedly referred to her male fans as “males” (オス, a term normally used for male animals) in the process, splitting opinion over whether the term itself counts as discriminatory. At the same time, many commenters said they understood the underlying message — asking fans to cut out sexually harassing comments during her streams — so the debate ended up tangled between the appropriateness of the wording and the legitimacy of the request itself.

lol the harassment guy getting all worked up

Background and Key Points of the Debate

What stands out about this thread is the split between those who take issue with the term “male” itself and those who support the substance of the warning — a request to stop sexually harassing comments during streams. Warnings and controversies over sexual remarks and the appropriate distance between VTubers and fans come up again and again in this scene, and this incident is an extension of that pattern. That said, it’s worth noting that the full original statement is never quoted in the thread, so the context in which the word “male” was actually used can only be pieced together from fragmentary quotes. Whether the term itself was appropriate and whether the content of the warning was justified are, in principle, separate questions, but in the thread the two kept getting discussed as one.

  • Zion Suzuki’s Fingertip Super-Save Denies Clear-Cut Chance! Aston Villa Beat Newcastle 1-0 Away!

Aston Villa’s Zion Suzuki stopped a clear-cut chance early in the away match against Newcastle with a fingertip save, and the team went on to win 1-0. In Premier League Matchday 7, Suzuki has now started six consecutive matches. The thread was split between praise for his growing defensive stability and skepticism, since the team itself has lost 3 of its last 4 matches and hasn’t found its rhythm this season. The discussion also touched on his battle with Nishikawa for the starting spot back at Urawa Reds, and how his development at Sint-Truiden fed into the growth he’s shown now.

    First win in two matches

In Premier League Matchday 7, played on October 17 local time, Aston Villa, with Zion Suzuki, faced Newcastle away from home.

Villa, whose Japan national team goalkeeper has now started six straight matches, faced a clear-cut chance in the 9th minute. Jackson broke free on a pass from Alisson, got past his marker to go one-on-one with the keeper, and finished with the outside of his right foot — but couldn’t convert.

    Honestly, no sign of growth.

Still only 24 and already a starting Premier League keeper, that's insane.
Truly grateful to Sint-Truiden for developing him.
Sint-Truiden's contribution to Japanese football has been massive.

But back in his "Urawa Republic" days (fans' half-joking nickname for Urawa Reds' fiercely loyal fanbase)… mighty Man United were already trying to snap him up early (lit. "rice-paddy poaching" — signing a prospect before they're fully grown), so doesn't that just prove how great Urawa's development is?

This guy's really good at making himself look good.
Stuff a normal keeper would just catch head-on, he turns into a "super save,"

At the Asian Cup he was just made the scapegoat for Itakura and Morita's sloppy defending.
Zion's shot-stopping was fine — he only conceded off a rebound.

And conceding off a rebound means the opposing player was wide open in front of goal, which means whoever was marking him slacked off.

Monster-level players are more often mixed-race Black than purely Black.

    Yamal, Mbappé, Olise, Bellingham, Zion
    Mbaye
Plus Brazil's Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos are also mixed Black.
Even Cristiano Ronaldo's great-grandmother was Black.

In mulatto cultural regions, being mixed-race is just the culture, so there's no concept of "half" like in Japan.
People are mixed in all kinds of ways, and it's different from America's one-drop rule.
There are even categories like cabra, pardo, and mulatto based on degree of mixing.

Watching the full match, his footwork stands out even more than his saves.
Was Zion always good with his feet?
I recall he lost his starting spot to Nishikawa at one point, right?
    102AnonymousOct 18, 2026 08:42
    Re: #90
He's said himself that seeing Nishikawa's kicking shocked him into training on it.
Apparently he hasn't skipped kicking practice a single day since.

The reason he couldn't take the starting job back from Nishikawa is that Urawa brought in a foreign GK coach specifically for Zion's sake,
but it ended up being Nishikawa who improved more under that coach.
Maybe Nishikawa just meshed better with him.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Zion Suzuki is still only 24, and starting six straight Premier League matches as a goalkeeper at that age is an unusually high level of trust. The thread recounted the story of him competing with Nishikawa for the starting spot back in his Urawa Reds days — reportedly stunned by Nishikawa’s kicking technique, he threw himself into extra practice as a result, which came up as part of the backstory to his technical growth. At the same time, Aston Villa itself has lost 3 of its last 4 matches, and the gap between praise for his individual performances and skepticism toward the team’s results was the biggest source of disagreement in the thread. Worth noting: evaluating Suzuki personally and evaluating the team’s standing and form are two separate axes, and which one you weigh more heavily tends to shape your overall impression.

  • Windows 11 “24H2” Support Ends — 5ch: “I’ll Keep Using 10 Till I Die”

On October 13, 2026, support ended for Windows 11’s “24H2” version (Home and Pro editions). While Windows 10 was given a one-year Extended Security Updates (ESU) program even for individual users, Windows 11’s 24H2 simply expired on its normal upgrade-cycle schedule. The end of support doesn’t mean your PC stops working right away, but from now on, no fixes will be issued even if vulnerabilities are discovered. Reactions on the 5ch thread were split — some debated the move to drop older CPU generations from Windows 11 support, while others clashed over whether to keep using Windows 10 or push forward with updates.

I switched to Windows 11 and thought I’d be set for a good while… but.

Actually, on October 13, support ended for a Windows 11 version called “24H2.” This applies to the consumer Home and Pro editions.

Don’t worry — your PC won’t suddenly stop working just because support has ended. However, going forward, even if security issues are found, no update will arrive to fix them.

Even on Windows 11, if you're on 21H2 or earlier, you can't set up the trendy passkey feature.
Though there doesn't seem to be any hardware limit stopping you from upgrading all the way to 26H2, so that's fine.

But my very first self-built desktop, from late 2018, has too weak a CPU — Windows 11 won't even install, which is rough.

Dropping support for 7th-gen CPUs is brutal 😭💔
    59AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:52
    Re: #30
I've personally handled close to 300 used PCs so far, and for some reason 7th-gen-and-earlier machines always seem to have been used roughly — cracked plastic, broken buttons, bad USB ports, way more often than newer ones.
Before the cutoff was announced, you almost never saw 8th-gen-and-later machines on the used market.
That's because even beat-up old machines could still run Windows, so people kept forcing themselves to use them — nobody bothered buying the latest generation.
If they hadn't cut off the old ones, this kind of junk would just keep flooding the market, and in the end it'd hurt Microsoft's reputation and sales too.
In a good way, by clearly saying "anything before such-and-such generation isn't supported on 11," there's less junk around, and it actually helps keep the market healthy.
The cutoff was announced years in advance, and they even gave a two-year extension on top of that — so complaining about it now seems kind of unreasonable.

Even if you feel safe now, the next replacement (or extra-purchase) cycle will be here before you know it.

Background and key points of this topic

Windows 11 gets major updates (24H2, 25H2, and so on) roughly every six months to a year, and each version has its own individual support end date. The end of 24H2 affects Home/Pro users who haven’t kept up with subsequent major updates. Windows 10, meanwhile, after its regular support ended in October 2025, was given a one-year conditional Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for individual users — which is what the thread title’s “extended by a year” refers to. Opinions in the thread were split between posts praising the move to drop older CPU generations like 7th-gen-and-earlier from Windows 11 support as “a policy that helps keep the market healthy” (post 59), and complaints about insufficient notice and the hassle of migrating (posts 40, 55). Note that the hardware exclusion is actually a separate mechanism based on requirements like TPM 2.0, and it’s easy to confuse it with this 24H2 support end date.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[OS] Windows 10’s support got extended by a year, but part of Windows 11 has reached end of support.”
