  • Fukuoka Favorite ‘West’ Brings Its Udon Shops to Tokyo’s 23 Wards for the First Time

Fukuoka-based udon chain West will open its first udon location in Tokyo’s 23 wards on November 2, in Jimbocho. With about 40 seats, the shop will serve udon by day, then switch to an izakaya format at night featuring motsunabe (offal hot pot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe) dishes, and shochu from Kyushu. In the Kanto region the chain has mostly run soba shops (Kisoba Azuma) up to now, but it’s stepping up udon openings on the strength of the popularity of Kitakyushu-born chain Sasan Udon. Thread commenters debated Sasan Udon’s flavor, the difference in “koshi” (chewy bite) between Fukuoka-style and Kagawa-style udon, and the broader phenomenon of regional chains clustering in Tokyo.

Local udon chain West (Fukuoka City) will make its first foray into Tokyo’s 23 wards under the udon format this November. The chain has mostly run soba shops in the Kanto region so far, but as Fukuoka’s udon culture takes hold — helped along by the popularity of Kitakyushu-born chain Sasan Udon — it’s ramping up udon shop openings.

Will the interior of the udon shop making its first foray into Tokyo’s 23 wards match the original in Fukuoka? (illustrative image)

The new location opens November 2 in Jimbocho, Tokyo, with roughly 40 seats. It will serve mainly udon during the day, then switch to an izakaya format at night featuring its signature motsunabe and mentaiko dishes, plus shochu from Kyushu.

Sasan Udon's just as mushy — tastes like those old bagged supermarket noodles.

    West's kakiage really is tasty, isn't it~

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Behind this expansion is the fact that Kitakyushu-born chain Sasan Udon already built up name recognition in the Tokyo area first. Sasan Udon has recently come under the umbrella of the Skylark Group, and on the thread some commenters pointed to the phrase “our suppliers haven’t changed, but what we buy has” as evidence of a shift in taste. Fukuoka/Hakata-style udon is characterized by soft noodles and a sweeter broth, a different lineage from the firm, chewy noodles typified by Sanuki udon. That distinction fueled both the “no bite = bad” camp and the “easier to eat for the elderly and small children” defense, making it the thread’s central point of debate. Tokyo also tends to attract chains that originated in the regions, and just how well a udon specialist can really take root in Kanto, where soba culture runs deep, is something that — as with Sasan Udon — will only become clear a few years after opening. As the article notes, West had already made a prior push into Tokyo with its fresh-soba brand Azuma (“East”), and this latest move reads as an extension of that earlier expansion.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (News Express+) thread “[Dining Out] Fukuoka Favorite “West” Brings Its Udon Shops to Tokyo’s 23 Wards for the First Time.”

  • “I’ve Got a Kid, You Know. Can’t You Just Sit Somewhere Else?” — Family Caught Squatting in Stranger’s Reserved Window Seat

A story shared on 5ch’s News Speed+ board describes a passenger who found a parent and child sitting in the reserved window seat they’d booked a month in advance on a limited express train. When the passenger spoke up, the father reportedly shot back, “I’ve got a kid, you know. Couldn’t you sit somewhere else?” But rather than debate the rights and wrongs of the situation, the thread quickly settled into a familiar refrain — “not this kind of story again” — with most of the discussion revolving around whether the tale was real or made up. Some pointed to a note attached to the original article as evidence that it’s actually an edited, reconstructed reader-survey submission rather than a straight account of real events.

I’d booked a reserved window seat on a limited express a month in advance, planning to go visit my mother back home.

I checked my boarding spot on the platform, then wheeled my suitcase onto the train.

Following the seat number down the aisle, I found a boy of about three sitting in my reserved window seat.

When there's a transportation accident, they identify bodies by the seat you booked, right?
So I'd say something like: "I just want my family to be able to claim my body even a little sooner, so I really can't give up this seat" —
and just keep pleading earnestly, on and on. I figure they'd decide I'm too much trouble and back off.

I ride the Shinkansen a lot and this has never once happened to me, never even seen it.
Sitting in the wrong seat by accident and both people realizing when they check tickets — sure, that happens sometimes.
But the price gap between a non-reserved and a reserved ticket is only a few hundred yen, so nobody's pulling a stunt like this.
    148AnonymousSep 21, 2026 12:15
    Re: #136

I'd like to think this couldn't happen these days, but years ago, when everyone was lined up waiting for the first train, a kid of about 5 or 6 toddled up and cut in at the front of the line. When the doors opened he sprinted in and reserved an entire box seat for his parents, who showed up later. This was on the Tokaido Line out of Tokyo Station, so the line was pretty long. I kept quiet since scolding a little kid felt petty, but it still bugs me whenever I remember it.

    Re: #143
I make a point of lining up on the reserved-car side, right at the boundary between the reserved and non-reserved cars.
Naturally, people with reserved seats don't need to rush, so that line is practically empty.
The instant the doors open I board, then immediately dash into the non-reserved car — makes it easy to grab a seat. Recommended.

    Background and points of debate

This type of “reader experience column” — built around trouble on trains or in restaurants — gets published regularly on news sites, and it becomes a talking point on 5ch every single time. This case was no different: a note attached to the original article, quoted in the thread, states that the piece is “based on experiences submitted through a reader survey, with people, situations, and dialogue partially edited and reconstructed out of consideration for privacy.” In other words, the article itself makes clear it isn’t a verbatim account of a real incident but a reader submission reworked into a narrative piece. Readers who miss that caveat tend to get stuck arguing over whether the story is “real,” even though the article already flags itself as a creative reconstruction — a detail that’s easy to overlook. At the same time, some in the thread raised concrete, rail-savvy points, like the price gap between reserved and non-reserved tickets, or how during busy periods only non-reserved tickets may be available, showing a genuine effort to check the story’s details against real-world train travel.

  • Will a Degree Be Worthless in the AI Era? 5channers Split Down the Middle

A thread that kicked off with the post “Isn’t the value of a college degree about to crash in the AI era?” took off on 5ch’s Nanji board (Livejupiter, a general chat/sports board). As AI increasingly handles document creation, meeting minutes, and even medical diagnosis, opinions clashed head-on: some argued that academic credentials no longer mean anything, while others countered that the harder it becomes to see differences in ability, the more employers will lean on a degree as a “trust signal.” The thread also cited a Forbes JAPAN article describing a real case of a young graduate from a top university who sent out over 1,000 résumés amid the AI-era job crunch and still couldn’t land an offer.

    No way that's true.

Employees with low education who'd never even touched PowerPoint before are now, as of a few months ago, churning out slide decks with the look and content quality of something outsourced to a vendor.

And new hires who don't understand a single word of the meeting still produce perfect minutes lol

    Re: #31
It's not that degrees lose their value — it's that the reason they have value changes.
The more AI narrows the gap in output quality, the harder it gets for employers to judge ability up front, so a trust signal like a degree is actually more likely to stick around.
    61AnonymousSep 21, 2026 12:41
    Re: #44
    This, exactly.
If everyone's submitting a polished AI-written personal statement, of course employers will just default to picking whoever has the better degree.
    49AnonymousSep 21, 2026 12:38
    It's the opposite.
It's precisely because AI narrows individual differences in value and cuts down on education costs that it turns into a full-on "degree game."
A degree ends up being basically the only thing left to differentiate yourself with — and sure enough, similarly-positioned certifications have been gaining value for the same reason.
    64AnonymousSep 21, 2026 12:41
    Re: #49
    Agreed.
Once AI can help you prep your entry-sheet answers and interview responses too, the people left standing will be the ones with strong looks and degrees — the two things AI can't fake its way around.

    Re: #32
If anything, the people who benefit most from AI are the ones who are only credentialed, not actually capable.
AI just shrinks the gap between capable and incapable people who both have high degrees — the social divide between high- and low-education people doesn't change.
A degree is basically a caste system at this point.
    58AnonymousSep 21, 2026 12:40
    Re: #51
Assuming that a useless-but-credentialed person can even use AI well — that's just wishful thinking on your part lol
    Good one.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

This debate over academic credentials echoes the structure of what economists call “signaling theory” (the idea that a degree functions as a proxy indicator guaranteeing a person’s ability). The counterargument that, as AI narrows the gap in individual output, employers find it harder to judge ability from interviews or essays alone and so lean more heavily on an easy-to-read indicator like a degree, lines up with this theory. On the other hand, the Forbes JAPAN article cited in the thread was actually about how AI-driven efficiency in document screening reduces the number of touchpoints with applicants in the first place, so even highly educated candidates can’t get to the interview stage — a point that’s easy to misread as “degrees becoming meaningless” when it’s really about “the entry point to the hiring process narrowing.” Some replies in the thread also drew a distinction between formal education and raw academic ability (“jiatama,” or native smarts), and opinions were split on which one actually loses its value.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanji board) thread “Isn’t the value of a degree about to crash in the AI era? 🤔.”

  • Kikuchi Fuma Responds to Endo Erika’s Ice Cream Question with “Papico — Wanna Split One?”, 5ch: “That’s a Smart Answer”

While filming for the info show “Mitorizu,” Juice=Juice’s Endo Erika asked Sexy Zone’s Kikuchi Fuma what ice cream he likes. Kikuchi answered, “Papico. Want to split one?” and Endo deflected with, “I’m more the type who wants to eat a lot on my own.” On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, many praised the reply as a “perfect 100-point idol answer,” while others teased him over a past partner he supposedly shared ice cream with, and traded comments on how each cast member handled themselves — sparking a mix of reactions to the on-air exchange.

Background and Talking Points on This Story

The comeback “Want to split one?” is being read as one of variety TV’s classic exchange patterns — a safely inoffensive answer meant to avoid any hint of romantic implication. Papico is an ice pop molded as two joined sticks designed to be split apart, so the very idea of “splitting one” doubles as a built-in joke specific to that product — likely part of why the thread reacted so favorably. The thread also saw comments claiming Kikuchi has shared ice cream with other female idols in the past, splitting opinion on how he carries himself on variety shows. Note that this article does not cover posts amounting to personal attacks on the show’s cast or unsubstantiated accusations.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Juice=Juice’s Endo Erika: ‘Fuma, what ice cream do you like?’ Kikuchi Fuma: ‘Papico. Want to split one?’ Endo: ‘I’m more the type who wants to eat a lot on my own…’“

  • “Let’s Have a High-Level Discussion,” They Said → 5ch Live-Chat Users Derail into Monster Hunter Talk and Food Porn

On 5ch’s live-commentary board “Nandemo Jikkyou G,” a thread that kicked off with the call “let’s have a high-level discussion” ended up blowing up — just not the way anyone expected. No talk of literature or art ever materialized; instead the topic turned to games like Monster Hunter and Puzzle & Dragons. Things got sillier still when someone twisted a politician’s surname into the pun “Level Takaichi” (playing on “takai,” meaning “high”), which got a laugh out of everyone. From there the thread spiraled further, with posters swapping lunch photos and debating their favorite characters from the anime “Sound! Euphonium.” In the end, the “high-level discussion” everyone originally asked for never actually happened.

    Background and Talking Points

“Nandemo Jikkyou G” is a live-commentary board where casual chatter flows almost like a livestream, and it’s common for a thread’s stated topic to have nothing to do with where the conversation actually ends up. This time, too, the “let’s have a high-level discussion” premise never really took hold — the drift toward game talk and food photos is a familiar pattern on this board. The “Takaichi” pun that runs through the thread repurposes a politician’s surname as wordplay on “takai” (high); it’s worth noting this is just wordplay, not commentary on policy or approval ratings. It should also be noted that the original thread contained replies mocking a real person’s educational background and appearance, plus some sexual comments — those have been left out of this article since they amount to personal attacks on a specific individual. For most live-commentary threads, the appeal isn’t deep engagement with any single topic — it’s the fast, easy back-and-forth between posters.

The thread went on to cover members’ past audition rejections and their ties to non-Hello! Project groups like Dream5.

    Background and Talking Points

Within Hello! Project, candidates who fail Morning Musume auditions are often later scouted into under-label groups like Juice=Juice — and the members named in this thread (Danbara, Matsunaga, Ebata, Ishiyama, Kawashima, and Hayashi Hitomi) all followed that path. That’s why a scene like this, where a Juice=Juice member ends up explaining Morning Musume’s history, isn’t actually unusual. Meanwhile, “Dream5,” which came up in the thread, is a live-in vocal-and-dance group known for its Yo-kai Watch theme song — a separate group from “Dream” — and a few posts in the thread mixed the two up. It’s also worth noting that the thread itself offers no explanation for why Morning Musume wasn’t present for the recording.

I'm grown up, but still a kid at heart, lol

    Background and Discussion Points

“Pekomogu Kitchen” is a TVer-streamed location-shoot cooking show featuring idols making home-style dishes, and Juice=Juice’s Sakura Ishiyama — though she’s from Tokyo — lives on her own, away from her family home. The fact that her grandmother lives alone isn’t especially unusual in itself, given how common single-person elderly households have become. Even so, on the thread, scraps of information — “she moved out despite being from Tokyo,” “we don’t know the full situation with her grandmother or parents” — fueled speculation that went further into her family circumstances. All that was actually revealed on the show was her own comment that she’d been making bento for her grandmother and mother since high school; no details about her family structure or circumstances were disclosed. It’s worth keeping in mind that the thread’s guesses remain just speculation, with nothing to confirm them as fact.

  • The ‘Catch-and-Release’ Dating Trap: Women Who Keep Rejecting Good Prospects — 5ch: “Anyone in STEM Already Knows the Optimal Answer”

A Nikkan Gendai article points out that quite a few women, when matchmaking, reject decent partners one after another, only to later regret it — thinking, “That guy wasn’t so bad, what a waste.” In response, a 5ch thread traded opinions and personal experiences on the “trial dating” system used by matchmaking agencies, the mathematical theory behind timing your choice of partner (the so-called 37% rule), and whether looks or substance should matter more. Notably, participants split over whether it’s even appropriate to frame matchmaking in terms of “gains and losses.”

I'm 53 now, pulling in around 14 million yen a year, nothing special ability-wise, just an average balding middle-aged guy — but I have zero sympathy for the bottom-tier losers in my generation.
In the "Employment Ice Age" threads (Japan's lost generation who job-hunted during the 1990s–2000s recession), the guys whining "it's because of the Ice Age" are just blaming the era and society for their own lack of effort — I can tell, because I'm from the same generation.
It's been 30 years since then. So what exactly have the bottom-tier guys been doing this whole time?

I hear all the time that women dump guys one after another, figuring that since they're paying money, the agency will just introduce someone even better.

    Re: #16
Well, the people being introduced to you also have the same biological instincts you do, so they can only be matched with — and can only choose from — people who are actually interested in their looks and stats. That's the harsh reality.
Anyone who thinks they can get unlimited introductions to great partners who are into them no matter what is just an unpopular person with a wildly inflated view of their own sexual market value.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “37% rule” that came up in the thread applies the mathematical optimal stopping problem (commonly known as the secretary problem) to matchmaking: the theory holds that your odds of success are highest if you automatically pass on a fixed share of candidates (roughly 37%), then pick the first person after that who beats all the ones before. That said, this is purely a statistically optimal strategy — it offers no guarantee on romance-specific factors like chemistry or feelings. Meanwhile, the “trial dating” system at matchmaking agencies lets clients date multiple people at once, and as several posters noted, the more someone pays, the more likely they are to think “there must be someone even better” and keep their options open — a structure that can easily fuel the “catch-and-release matchmaking” the article describes. The thread split between those criticizing the very idea of choosing a partner by checklist, and those who see approaching matchmaking with calculation as only natural; no clear consensus emerged.

  • Tourist numbers keep rising in Shirahama even after the pandas went home to China — 5ch: “Guess we didn’t need the pandas after all”

It’s been over a year since Adventure World in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, sent its four headline giant pandas back to China. A drop in tourism was widely expected, but the prefecture’s “tourist trends survey,” released in late August, shows visitor numbers have actually stayed above the previous year’s levels even after the pandas left. On 5ch, some took the figures at face value, saying “guess we didn’t need the pandas after all,” while others pushed back with data, noting that “Adventure World itself — the town’s main earner — has actually seen fewer visitors” and “some months are down 50,000 to 100,000 people year-on-year.” Opinion split over whether the reported increase reflects the town as a whole or just its flagship attraction.

It’s been over a year since the leisure facility “Adventure World” in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, sent all four of its headline giant pandas back to China at once.

Locally, a sharp drop in tourism was expected, but looking at the prefecture’s “tourist trends survey” for last year, released in late August, the total number of visitors to the town and attractions like Shirahama Onsen actually exceeded the figures from the year before that, and has held at roughly the same level in the months since the pandas’ return.

According to the town’s own survey, visitor numbers have remained strong into this year as well.

    Background and points of debate

The four giant pandas were on loan from China under a “Japan-China joint breeding research” arrangement, and their return was simply a matter of the lease ending. It’s worth noting that the figures making headlines here come from the “tourist trends survey” covering the broader Shirahama town and Shirahama Onsen area as a whole — a separate statistic from visitor numbers at Adventure World, the flagship attraction, specifically. Commenters on the thread picked up on this distinction, pointing out that “nobody’s saying whether Adventure World’s own numbers went up” and that “the main earner is actually down,” suggesting the flagship facility may be struggling even as town-wide figures look good. There’s also a discrepancy between the prefecture’s published statistics and year-on-year data independently compiled by a private site, and opinions split over how much the post-panda decline from July onward offset the pre-return rush in May and June. Figures for the panda rental fee and penalty payments in the event of death were also cited in the replies, but since the source was a social media post rather than an official statement from the municipality or a zoo, this article cannot confirm their accuracy.

Bottom line: VTubers just aren't as popular with normal people as the fanboys ("V-buta") like to claim.

    Re: #40
They're stuck in such a tiny echo chamber that their sense of normal is completely broken. Even on X you see them flexing about subscriber counts and view counts — metrics that leave normal people going '???'. Genuinely pathetic.
    54AnonymousSep 21, 2026 10:47
She's running a business reeling in lolicon 'big kids' (adult fans), and then tries to collab with a legit children's clothing brand — of course people said no. Aren't her streams mostly late-night anyway?

    Re: #54
If the company's the one who asked her, then sure, why wouldn't she do it?
    62AnonymousSep 21, 2026 10:49
What I really don't get is OP making thread after thread to defend some drawn character called Shigure Ui. Normally you wouldn't care this much unless you were getting paid.

    Re: #62
If you didn't care, you wouldn't be replying, would you? 😅
    65AnonymousSep 21, 2026 10:49
Hate for VTuber fanboys ("V-buta") just keeps piling up. Next time something happens at a bigger event, the whole industry's going up in flames.

    Re: #65
You won't know that until it actually happens.
    66AnonymousSep 21, 2026 10:50
So this is basically a clash between kids'-clothing shoppers and VTuber fans, right? Brand-conscious moms vs. lolicon uncles. Wonder who wins.
    75AnonymousSep 21, 2026 10:54
    Re: #66
She should've stayed happy with that, but no, she had to step out on her own — and of all things, blows up big over a girls' clothing collab.
    70AnonymousSep 21, 2026 10:52
It's not just 'kids' clothing' — the fact that it's specifically Mezzo Piano is what makes this so perfectly awkward.

    Re: #70
True. The kind of slightly image-conscious moms who want to turn their daughters into little princesses seem like exactly the type who'd hate creepy otaku the most.

So it's young people going wild over this? That's surprising.

LOL, but honestly that's probably not an inaccurate description. That one song alone has weirdly outperformed everything else of hers.

    Re: #90
Why'd she even put on a 9-year-old avatar for that? What was the point?

    Re: #90
Isn't it supposed to be a song about purging lolicons?

Background and Key Points of the Controversy

“Shukusei!! Loli-God Requiem☆” is a signature song Shigure Ui has performed for a while, known for its premise of a 9-year-old avatar taunting pedophiles. The song itself didn’t spark new controversy this time — rather, the backlash was set off by the way its imagery collided with a project tied to real children: a collaboration with a kids’ clothing brand. Opinion in the thread split over whether blame should fall on Shigure Ui herself or on the company that made the offer. Defenders argued it’s unfair to expect her to turn down work and called it a misjudgment by the company, while critics countered that the moment you get tangled up with that crowd you’re done, and held her personally responsible. One caveat: the quoted “AI Overview” claiming her audience is mostly teens to 30-somethings cites no clear source or methodology, and isn’t official data confirming who her fanbase actually is.
