  • Masanari Iida’s video of him eating raw venison sashimi racks up 4.6 million views — flood of warnings about the dangers of eating raw game meat

On September 27, TV personality Masanari Iida (a former BreakingDown fighter with over 130,000 followers on X) posted a video to X showing himself enjoying raw venison sashimi and beer in the woods, and it went on to rack up more than 4.6 million views. In response, posts flooded in on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Express+ board warning about the risks of eating raw game meat, including hepatitis E virus and parasites. At the same time, some pushed back on the warnings as “know-it-all” posturing, arguing that eating what you want is a matter of personal responsibility — splitting the thread between concerns over food safety and respect for individual choice.

On September 27, Masanari Iida (410,000 subscribers) posted a video on X of himself eating raw venison sashimi. The post has been viewed more than 4.6 million times, drawing a wave of comments warning about the dangers of eating raw deer meat.

Iida has previously competed in BreakingDown, and in July 2025 he withdrew from “BreakingDown16” citing a falling-out with organizer Yuji Mizoguchi. He has more than 130,000 followers on X.

Beef or horse sashimi is way tastier, several times over
Not something you need to eat in an age with this much food abundance

Background and key points of this topic

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare classifies raw game meat, including venison, as something that “should not be served raw” under the Food Sanitation Act, since risks like hepatitis E virus, Sarcocystis, and other parasites can only be eliminated by cooking. One commenter in the thread (#15) pointed out that freezing can kill parasites but does nothing against the hepatitis virus — a distinction that’s easy to miss and worth keeping in mind. The thread split along a familiar 5ch fault line: those raising food-safety concerns versus those defending individual choice under an “it’s his own responsibility, so leave him alone” stance — a pattern that recurs well beyond just raw-food debates. Iida is a former BreakingDown competitor, and the video’s 4.6-million-view count speaks to how much attention it drew; that said, no one in the thread reported him actually falling ill, so it’s worth remembering the warnings here are general risk statements rather than a confirmed case.

  • “Japan Is Already Finished” Remark Splits Opinion as 5ch Erupts Over the Country’s Future

A quote allegedly posted on social media by a 19-year-old woman — “Japan’s already finished lol, drew a total dud in the country lottery, what a trash nation” — became the talk of a 5ch thread. The one-liner set off a debate that exposed a real generational gap in how people see Japan’s future. Some voices leaned pessimistic (“Annoying as it is, she’s got a point,” “today’s 40-somethings are just barely the last generation that gets to escape unscathed”), while others pushed back (“this isn’t a zero-or-hundred kind of thing,” “we’re in decline, sure, but ‘finished’ is a long way off”). The conversation then sprawled into income comparisons with the US and Thailand, South Korea’s exam-hell culture, and how 1960s entertainment stacks up against today’s — before finally devolving into an argument about the Nintendo Switch 2.

    Background and Talking Points

“Country lottery” (国ガチャ, kuni-gacha) is internet slang for the idea that the life options available to you are largely determined by the country you happen to be born in — likened to a gacha loot-box draw. The term has been increasingly common in recent years against a backdrop of stagnant real wages and Japan’s relative slide in international economic rankings. The thread’s core disagreement was over whether Japan’s present situation counts as “already finished” or “still relatively fortunate depending on what you compare it to” — with one side reaching for comparisons to developing regions like Africa, South America, and India, and the other insisting the fairer comparison is against developed powers like the US and China. The income and entertainment comparisons posted in the thread are all based on individual posters’ personal impressions, not verified statistics. The original trigger — a “19-year-old woman’s post” — likewise cannot be confirmed from the thread itself as to whether it’s real or where it was supposedly made, and shouldn’t be treated as established fact. Generational arguments like this one tend to collapse into oversimplified “kids these days” vs. “back in my day” framing, and this thread is no exception — notice how comparisons to 1960s entertainment or South Korea’s exam culture flatten a lot of individual nuance. Worth keeping in mind while reading.

  • Sakura Wars 30th Anniversary Illustration Leaves Out Only the New Sakura Wars Protagonist — 5ch: ‘Guess They Want to Forget It Ever Happened?’

This week’s Famitsu cover featured a newly drawn commemorative illustration celebrating Sakura Wars’ 30th anniversary, bringing together protagonists from across the series’ history — but the protagonist of “New Sakura Wars,” produced by Toshihiro Nagoshi, was notably missing. On 5ch, reactions ranged from “Maybe even Sega treats the new game as a black mark on its history” to pointed criticism of the production process (“Shouldn’t the character designer of the latest game normally be the one asked to draw it?”). Opinions also diverged over the lineage of character design across the series and how to judge New Sakura Wars’ sweeping overhaul of the game system.

Kind of dark that the protagonist from V — which you could also call a black mark on the series — made the cut, but the New protagonist didn't. Guess Sega really wants to pretend New Sakura Wars never happened.
    4AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:57
I mean, come on, New Sakura's character design is way better than that thing in the top left, no contest.

    6AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:58
If I had to defend it — maybe it's because the character designer is different? Then again, it IS the latest entry, so you'd think the person who drew the latest game would normally be the one to draw this. And if they weren't going to line up every single character, they could've just used a representative Sakura instead. This is the one pattern you really shouldn't do.

Hidenori Matsubara can draw in a style like In This Corner of the World, so he's more versatile than Kosuke Fujishima.

Same with Takashi Yamazaki on Dragon Quest: Your Story — he turned it down because he didn't know Dragon Quest, but Horii and Square Enix pushed him into it anyway. Seems like a lot of these disastrous projects come down to screwups that have nothing to do with the creator's own talent.

Sega moves too fast on everything — guess they jumped on the political-correctness bandwagon too early as well…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sakura Wars is a simulation RPG Sega released in 1996. New Sakura Wars, released in 2019, was produced by Toshihiro Nagoshi and featured a sweeping overhaul of both the battle system and character designs. Across the series’ history, Kosuke Fujishima has handled the original character concepts, while much of the actual artwork has been drawn by veteran animator Hidenori Matsubara — and in this thread, opinions were split over which artist’s style the new illustration more closely resembles. The fact that “only the protagonist is missing” is simply a matter of this particular illustration’s composition; it’s easy to misread this as an official announcement that New Sakura Wars has been discontinued or branded a franchise embarrassment, which it has not been. As commenters pointed out with the example of Shinn Asuka being left out of a Gundam 50th anniversary illustration, such “omissions” in commemorative art can simply come down to production circumstances, so a definitive judgment should be avoided.

Sugiyama Yuna, a member of Hello! The thread filled with surprised comments like “Wait, Yuna-chan played soccer?”, followed by replies pointing out she’d shown off ball-juggling (freestyle “lifting”) skills at her Hello! Background and Discussion Points

The commercial Sugiyama Yuna appeared in was a Kirin soccer ad built around the theme of “connection” between Homare Sawa and children — at the time, she appears to have simply been cast as a general child actor, not as any kind of soccer talent scout pick. What really got the thread going was the question of why Sugiyama, now a member of Hello! Project’s BEYOOOOONDS (“Byo”), chose Hello! Project at all, given she already had such a notable casting credit under her belt before joining. Hello! Project has several paths to membership — advancing from trainee status into a group, as well as a kind of “early/advance recruitment” where outside talent is brought in specifically to boost an existing group’s profile — and several posters referenced that system directly. The way pre-debut history like commercial credits or ball-juggling skills shown off at an audition keeps resurfacing well after the fact is itself something of a recent phenomenon, driven by how easily an idol’s past now gets dug up via social media and online archives.

  • Venezuela Coach Fumes Over Late VAR Reversal After Collapse: ‘They Showed Us No Respect’

In an international friendly on the 28th, Japan’s national team faced Venezuela and won 2-1. Deep into second-half stoppage time, Venezuela looked to have been awarded a penalty, but after VAR rewound and reviewed three separate phases of play, a foul on Takefusa Kubo was confirmed instead, flipping the call to a penalty for Japan. Ayase Ueda converted it to seal a come-from-behind win. Venezuela’s manager Oswaldo Vizcarrondo voiced his displeasure with the call, saying “they lacked respect for us.” On 5ch, discussion centered on whether VAR’s rule of reviewing plays retroactively was justified, along with the players’ reactions.

    ◆International Friendly: Japan 2-1 Venezuela (28th, E-Peace Stadium)

Venezuela manager Oswaldo Vizcarrondo, whose side lost 1-2 to Japan, vented his frustration over the late penalty decision: “I was extremely surprised. I thought the penalty was going to be ours. There’s nothing to be done about the officiating now. We’re not machines, so emotion plays a big part in this. As for the judgment itself, I think it lacked respect for us.”

The match was tied 1-1 deep into second-half stoppage time when Japan defender Junnosuke Suzuki brought down a Venezuelan player inside the box, prompting Australian referee Danaskos to point to the spot. But after a VAR review, the call was overturned in favor of an earlier foul — Kubo had been knocked down inside Venezuela’s penalty area on the previous phase of play — and the penalty was awarded to Japan instead. Ayase Ueda converted it, sealing Japan’s win.

If Venezuela hadn't gotten their penalty, I don't think Kubo's foul would've even been reviewed. When you think about it that way, it's almost like Venezuela getting their own penalty is what backfired and handed Japan one. If they'd just stayed quiet, it would've ended 1-1.
    56AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:12
    Re: #45
They can't review it until play stops, so the ref's call in that moment was reasonable.
    62AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:12
    Re: #45
No, VAR can step in the moment play is dead. The real question is whether the foul on Kubo alone was enough to send it to an on-field review (OFR).
    47AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:11
Play didn't stop right at Kubo's foul, so I get why the ref's catching heat, but the pass leading to Venezuela's penalty was offside anyway, so that penalty wasn't happening either way.
    86AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:15
    Re: #47
At the moment of Kubo's foul, the ref had already called it as a foul. VAR just flags it as a possible foul for the ref to consider. The issue is that VAR can't intervene with the referee unless play has stopped — and on top of that, the rules don't allow an OFR here.
    55AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:12
VAR isn't perfect — it still comes down to the judgment of the VAR official and the referee.

    71AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:13
    Re: #70
Sounds like Venezuela's play was blatantly offside.
    88AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:15
    Re: #70
That's the exact same thing that caused a stir at the World Cup — VAR rewinds all the way back to where the passage of play started. Since it went from that lost ball all the way to the penalty call, every play in between was fair game for VAR.

    Background and Talking Points

Internationally, VAR operates on the principle of reviewing play back to the point where possession last changed hands — and in this case, the review rewound to the moment Venezuela lost the ball, checking three separate phases of play before arriving at Japan’s penalty. On the thread, reactions split between posters surprised by this rewind mechanic (“why bring this up now?”) and others explaining that it’s the same procedure that caused controversy at the World Cup. It’s also worth noting that VAR only advises the referee — the final call always rests with the official on the pitch, a detail that’s easy to overlook when arguing about whether the decision was right. And Coach Vizcarrondo’s remark about “a lack of respect for us” was an emotional protest, not a specific claim that the rules were misapplied.

  • Sergio Echigo Blasts Japan’s Lineup Selection as ‘Stuck in a Rut’ — 5ch Split on the Take

Japan’s national football team beat Venezuela 2-1 in an international friendly at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima on September 28, notching a second straight win following their victory over Uruguay. In a column for Nikkan Sports, commentator Sergio Echigo (81) criticized the approach of fielding a lineup centered on reserves and young players in the first half before bringing on the World Cup regulars in the second, calling it “stuck in a rut” and closing with “it’s unthinkable.” On 5ch, opinion was split between those arguing the nature of a friendly should be taken into account, and those agreeing that this approach does nothing to build up the bench.

Japan (FIFA ranking 17th), led by manager Hajime Moriyasu (58), who will stay on through next year’s Asian Cup, edged out Venezuela (ranked 47th). It was their second straight win, but Nikkan Sports commentator Sergio Echigo (81) pointed out a string of problems, closing with the word “unthinkable.”

Japan’s matches have become remarkably stuck in a rut. In the first half they send out young, inexperienced players who fail to get anything going, then bring on the core World Cup squad in the second half. That was true of the Uruguay match the other day, and it was true of this Venezuela match too.

    Re: #73
    Seriously, exactly
How much longer with Moriyasu? Isn't this a massive waste, since it just shrinks the time the next manager gets to work with?

Background and key points of this discussion

Sergio Echigo is a well-known, no-holds-barred columnist for Nikkan Sports, and this time his target was the lineup pattern manager Moriyasu has repeated friendly after friendly: fielding reserves and young players in the first half, then bringing on the World Cup regulars in the second. Friendlies are supposed to be a chance to test young and fringe players, but with FIFA rankings and next year’s Asian Cup on the line, results matter too, so opinion tends to split over whether development or winning should take priority. On the thread, one camp agreed that “if you don’t actually use young players as regulars, it doesn’t build depth,” while the other pushed back with “they’re forgetting what a friendly is for” and “it’s also a promotional event for sponsors and for growing the sport.” The national team is also set to face Ecuador and either Panama or New Zealand in the Kirin Cup this October, and whether this pattern of squad selection continues will be the thing to watch.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Sokuhou+) thread “[Sergio Echigo] Japan is stuck in a rut, nothing’s changed since the World Cup… They can sub all 11 players, so make it an event.”

  • “Is He Really 33?” Junya Ito Shines Against Venezuela — 5ch: “The Most Underrated Player in the World”

On September 28, 2026, Japan’s national team took on Venezuela at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima. The first half had its sluggish stretches, but 33-year-old Junya Ito stood out, setting up a goal from the flank. On 5ch, his performance sparked a thread that couldn’t settle on one verdict — surprise at a technical “evolution” that now extends even to his free kicks and passing accuracy, worry that no successor is in sight, and a sharper take that “the national team hasn’t actually progressed, it’s just leaning on a veteran.”

    Still evolving

On September 28, 2026, Japan’s national team faced Venezuela at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima. The starting lineup for the day was as follows.

The formation was the familiar 3-4-2-1: Reo Bryan Kokubo in goal; the back three, from right to left, were Ayumu Seko, Go Watanabe, and Junnosuke Suzuki; the double pivot was Daichi Kamada and Koki Kumasaka. Shuto Nakano started at right wing-back and Yuki Soma at left wing-back, with Ryunosuke Sato and Shunsuke Saito as the two shadow strikers, and Keisuke Goto at center forward.

    Background and Talking Points

Junya Ito, a Kashiwa Reysol product, is now 33 and plays for a club in Belgium. In 2023, a scandal involving his manager made headlines and he briefly stepped away from the national team — a story the thread also referenced. What sparked this discussion is that, far from declining since that episode, he’s kept “evolving,” sharpening even his passing and free-kick accuracy — the kind of technical growth speed-reliant players are usually said to struggle to develop. The thread split between voices praising him as “still improving” and harsher takes arguing that “the national team is just leaning on a veteran and hasn’t actually progressed” — a distinction worth reading separately from the praise for Ito himself. Concerns about the lack of a successor also came up repeatedly, making this more of a structural talking point than just a one-off highlight.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Soccer] ‘Is he really 33?’ — The ‘fearsome attacker’ who brought life to a Japan team stuck in neutral in the first half.”

  • Nasukawa Tenshin: “I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks the decision was off”

After the match, Nasukawa Tenshin reportedly spoke about the difficulty of scoring, saying “there’s so much I don’t understand” and “there are plenty of moments where I go, ‘huh?’” The bout, which he lost on points, appears to be his second career loss, and the fact that he scored a knockdown in round 7 yet still lost the decision became a hot topic on 5ch. The thread split between those who called the decision fair given the scoring rules for a round with a knockdown, and those who felt it was unacceptable to score a knockdown and still lose — with the discussion spreading into talk of future opponents and weight classes.

Nasukawa Tenshin feels the difficulty of scoring firsthand: “There’s so much I don’t understand,” “I think there are plenty of moments where I go, ‘huh?’”

    Re: #68
Yesterday Takuma and Tenshin were both clinching to catch a breather too

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Boxing scoring rules generally count a round with a clear knockdown as 10-8. What split the thread was which mattered more: the “fact of the knockdown” or the overall balance of the fight. If the claim in the thread is accurate — that he was already behind 2-1 by the end of round 7 — then his comeback after the knockdown simply wasn’t enough on the cards, which supports the argument that the scoring was procedurally fair. At the same time, the gut-level pushback that “scoring a knockdown and still losing doesn’t add up” remains strong, and that’s a tension that follows scored combat sports in general. Also worth noting: the thread lists the current champions of the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO as potential future opponents for a title run, but that’s just one poster’s own rundown — not an official ranking or designation.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Nasukawa Tenshin: “I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks the decision was strange. I bet a lot of you feel that way too”.”

  • Sotetsu Izumino Line Extension: Plan for Early Opening to Keio SFC Scrapped — 5ch: “Kuramino Station Is an Unstaffed Stop With Under 2,000 Riders a Day”

Kanagawa Prefecture has effectively shelved its plan to build, as a standalone first-phase project, just the roughly 3km stretch of the Sotetsu Izumino Line from Shonandai to the area near Keio University’s Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC), and will instead reconsider the entire roughly 8km line all the way to its terminus at Kuramino. The reversal comes down to the difficulty of securing profitability, effectively sending back to square one a plan that had been laid out in the 2016 Council for Transport Policy report. On the 5ch thread, discussion centered less on the rail plan itself and more on side topics: the push to attract a new Tokaido Shinkansen station to the Kuramino area at the line’s endpoint, and debates over SFC’s reputation and its AO (admissions-office) entrance exam system.

Kanagawa Prefecture has announced it will move forward studying the extension of the Sotetsu Izumino Line across the entire Shonandai–Kuramino section. Until now, the stretch from Shonandai to the area near Keio University’s Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) had been designated the first-phase section, but since profitability could not be secured there, the study area is being expanded to cover the full line through to Kuramino.

The Sotetsu Izumino Line extension plan calls for connecting the current terminus, Shonandai Station, to the Kuramino district of Samukawa Town — home to JR Sagami Line’s Kuramino Station — a distance of roughly 8km. It was also included in the 2016 Council for Transport Policy report.

Kanagawa Prefecture had, until now, been studying the roughly 3km stretch to the area near Keio University’s SFC — where a certain level of ridership could be expected — as the first-phase section, with plans for a Station A near Akihadai Park in Fujisawa City and a Station B near SFC. The remaining roughly 5km on to the Kuramino district had been designated the second-phase section.

The Ministry of Finance's policy is to drastically cut bloated university enrollment quotas given the shrinking, aging population — phasing out "F-rank" (bottom-tier) schools and departments one after another that can't stay solvent without international students.
They're also working to curb the university enrollment rate itself, to weed out students who barely study and narrow down who actually goes to college.

Honestly, that's a surprisingly good policy coming from the Finance Ministry.

    Re: #122
    Of course not.
Kuramino Station is an unstaffed stop with under 2,000 boardings a day.
It's got no name recognition even within Kanagawa.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Sotetsu Izumino Line extension is a plan that was included in the 2016 Council for Transport Policy report. The prefecture had positioned the stretch up to near Keio SFC — where profitability seemed easier to secure — as the first phase, with the remaining section to Kuramino designated the second phase. This policy shift comes because officials judged that the first-phase section alone couldn’t be made to pay for itself on its own; it doesn’t mean the SFC extension has been scrapped outright, but rather that the plan is being reorganized to study the full roughly 8km to Kuramino as one unified project instead of splitting it into phases. This is the point readers most easily get wrong: the accurate framing isn’t “SFC extension canceled” but “first-phase construction called off.” In the thread, discussion centered less on the rail line’s own profitability and more on side topics — the push to attract a new Tokaido Shinkansen station to the Kuramino area at the extension’s endpoint, and debates over SFC’s reputation and its AO admissions system. The concrete figure that Kuramino Station sees under 2,000 boardings a day at an unstaffed station is also a useful reference point for gauging the scale of the extension plan.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “[Kanagawa] Sotetsu Izumino Line effectively scraps early opening to Keio SFC, to be reconsidered as full-line construction to Kuramino.”

  • New Fire Emblem Title “Banshi Senkō” Opens at 127K, Falls Short of Engage’s 144K First Week

Fire Emblem: Banshi Senkō (万紫千紅, lit. “a riot of purples and reds”) opened its first week at 127,000 copies, falling short of both its immediate predecessor Engage’s 144,000 and Three Houses’ 143,000. Thread debate centered on how to weigh the roughly 2.2-million-unit gap in hardware install base between the Switch (at the time of Three Houses) and Switch 2 — one camp argued the game is “holding up well once you factor in the smaller install base,” while another countered that it’s not that the series is “finished,” but that it’s clearly on a downward slide. Many posters also brought up 3DS-era numbers like Awakening (262,000) and Fates (353,000) for comparison, once again highlighting the series’ long-term decline in opening-week sales.

Three Houses had the "katachike" pre-order bonus (some kind of bundled perk — exact details unclear) but Banshi Senkō doesn't

Palworld topping the pop-up store charts, the weekly sales numbers, Wolverine flopping, the Switch 2 version of Trails winning out — there's just too much stuff for that guy to lose his mind over

Background and Key Points of Debate

A metric that comes up often when discussing first-week sales is the comparison against hardware install base, and this time the starting point for discussion was the gap between Three Houses (at a Switch install base of 8.59 million) and the Switch 2 version of Banshi Senkō (an estimated install base of roughly 6 million). Looking at raw unit counts alone, sales dipped only slightly, from Three Houses’ 143,000 to Banshi Senkō’s 127,000, but once you factor in the roughly 2.2-million-unit gap in install base, opinion split between “proportionally, it’s holding up well” and “this is evidence the new hardware’s own growth is sluggish.” Looking at the series as a whole, first-week unit sales have been on a downward trend — from the 3DS era’s Awakening (262,000) and Fates (353,000) down to the Switch generation’s Engage (144,000) and Banshi Senkō (127,000) — but this overlaps with a broader trend of shrinking physical-copy launch sales across the console/handheld market as a whole, so it would be premature to chalk it up purely to FE losing steam on its own. As for the gap in user scores (Banshi Senkō at 8.9 vs. Engage at 7.0), review-site scores can skew depending on sample size and timing, so that should be read separately from the first-week sales comparison.
